Dear Colleague: Welcome to the Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) 115th Annual Spring Scientific Convention held May 14-17, 2014 at COBO Center in Detroit. As your host, the MOA hopes you find this year’s Spring Scientific Convention an educational, informative and enjoyable experience.

Upon arrival, please pick up your pre-registration materials located on the third level in the Atrium. You may also register onsite if not pre-registered. Your name badge will have a unique identifying bar code, please wear your name badge each day and scan name badge twice daily during designated times (you do not have to scan out). Computers are available in room 311-A for completing online evaluations, MOA staff available to assist you at your convenience.

This year’s Spring Scientific Convention offers 29 hours AOA Category 1-A credits plus two (2) additional credits may be earned for completion of a post convention Outcomes Survey. A total of 31 AOA Category 1-A credits anticipated. The Outcomes Survey will be emailed to all registered attendees in June. If you do not have an email address and want to participate, please contact the MOA CME Department.

This year’s Spring Scientific Convention includes four days of osteopathic medical education lectures and exhibits. CME will be offered on a wide range of clinical topics including OMM, geriatrics, cardiology, emergency room trauma, narcotics epidemic, ophthalmology, surgical topics, pediatrics, patient/physician protection Issues, and more. Again this year, MOA is offering eight (8) hours of Saturday CME sessions that also qualifies for Florida re-licensure requirements. Approved specialty credits to date are AOBEM (26), AOBPMR (3), AOBOG (7), AOBIM (12), AOBNMM (1) and AOBFP (29).

Please join us in welcoming keynote luncheon speakers Martin S. Levine, D.O., MPH, FACOFP dist., AOA Past President from New Jersey and Meredith Perry, D.O., urology resident at Detroit Medical Center who will both share their unique medical experiences.

Over 30 exhibitors will set up displays on levels 3 and 4, located outside sessions and in the Atrium. Hours are Wednesday 2:30 p.m.-Friday 6 p.m. Please visit with exhibitors to learn valuable information regarding products and services offered that may benefit you or your practice while getting updated on industry trends pertinent to the field of medicine.

Scientific research exhibits will be on display in room 410-B Thursday and Friday. The competition provides osteopathic medical students, residents, fellows and attending level physicians an opportunity to present their medical and scientific research to the osteopathic profession. The competition demonstrates the very best of what osteopathic medicine is and reaffirms the profession’s commitment to the advancement of science in osteopathic medicine. Awards announced during the Friday luncheon.

MICHAEL D. WEISS, D.O., President

EDWARD J. CANFIELD, D.O., Immediate Past President

Dr. Weiss is in private practice in obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYN) and serves as the director of the Women’s Wellness Institute in Rochester Hills. He serves as the primary physician for Metro Vein Centers of Rochester Hills in that location. Dr. Weiss is an assistant professor of OB-GYN at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he graduated and has served as the alumni association president. Dr. Weiss is an Oakland County Osteopathic Medical Association trustee and an American Osteopathic Board of OB-GYN distinguished fellow

A family physician, Dr. Canfield has practiced medicine in the Thumb of Michigan for the past 20 years.

He is currently working in Caro, Michigan. Dr. Canfield is a graduate of Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine (MSUCOM), and is a clinical assistant professor with MSUCOM. He is an assistant professor of family practice for Des Moines University, College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Canfield is a member and past president of the Eastern Michigan Osteopathic Association and a former board member of the Michigan Association of Osteopathic Family Physicians. Dr. Canfield is also the Michigan Osteopathic Association’s representative as trustee to the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan Board. Dr. Canfield’s wife, Dr. Cheryl Canfield, is also an osteopathic family physician who works in their home town of Sebewaing, Michigan. Together, they have four children.

MYRAL R. ROBBINS, D.O., FAAFP, FACOFP, President-elect Myral R. Robbins, D.O., FAAFP, FACOFP is a graduate of Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She is board certified in Family Medicine and was awarded fellowship status by both the AAFP and the ACOFP. She is a graduate of the AOA-OUCOM Heritage Foundation National Health Policy Fellowship and the MSUCOM Faculty Development Fellowship.

Dr. Robbins has served as president of the MSUCOM Alumni Board and also is a past- president of the Michigan Association of Osteopathic Family Physicians. Dr. Robbins was the founding Osteopathic Program Director of the Family Medicine Residency at MSU-KCMS, now WMed, in Kalamazoo, MI. She has been active in the osteopathic profession at the state and national level including serving on AOA councils and bureaus related to medical education, health policy and medical quality. She has been a Trustee of the MOA since 2007 and currently serves as President-elect.

ROBERT G.G. PICCININI, D.O., dFACN, Secretary/Treasurer Dr. Piccinini is in private practice with Associates in Psychiatry in Sterling Heights. Sub-specializing in Forensic and Geriatric psychiatry. Dr. Piccinini earned his credentials from Michigan State University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine. He completed his residency and Fellowship at Henry Ford Hospital and Medical College of Wisconsin, respectively. He is certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Neurology and Psychiatry. He serves on that board as Vice-President. He is the youngest member of the American College of Neurology and Psychiatry to be bestowed the honor of Distinguished Fellow in 2007 and serves as their President-elect and Program Chair. He is past president of Macomb Osteopathic Medical Association. He has served in different roles in the past with Ford Motor Company and Henry Ford Hospital.

KURT C. ANDERSON, D.O., Past President Dr. Anderson works for MidMichigan Physicians Group through MidMichigan Health System, and is the medical director for sports medicine at Central Michigan University. He also teaches in the athletic training program at CMU. He earned his credentials from A.T. Still University Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. He is a member of the American Osteopathic Association and is a Michigan delegate to the AOA House of Delegates.

Anderson is a two-time past president of Michigan Association of Osteopathic Family Physicians and member of American Osteopathic Association, American Academy of Sports Medicine and the Michigan Association of Medical Examiners.

LAWRENCE J. ABRAMSON, D.O., MPH, Trustee Dr. Abramson currently serves as the Chair of the Michigan Hospital Association Patient Safety Organization. He served for many years the Quality Director for McLaren Oakland (formerly Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital) in Pontiac. He earned his credentials from Des Moines College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery and University of Michigan. Board certified by the American Osteopathic Board of Family Practice and a Fellow of the American College of Medical Quality, he is a Michigan Osteopathic Association and a Michigan Association of Osteopathic Family Practitioners trustee and has a history of leadership roles with numerous medical organizations.

CHAUN GANDOLFO, Student Doctor Trustee

LAWRENCE L. PROKOP, D.O., Trustee

Mr. Gandolfo is a graduate of Michigan State University, where he graduated at the top his class with a Bachelor of Science in physiology and human Biology, achieving a 4.0 GPA overall. He is currently in his second year as a medical student at the Michigan State College of Osteopathic Medicine. Chaun serves as Treasurer of the MSUCOM class of 2016 Executive Board, and as Vice President of the MSUCOM Peer Mentor Organization. He is also a member of the Student Osteopathic Medical Association and Sigma Sigma Phi, an honors fraternity for osteopathic medical students. Chaun currently works as an anatomy lab teaching assistant and as a private tutor in physiology and biochemistry. He volunteers with various medical organizations in addition to volunteering regularly at Ele’s Place in Lansing.

Dr. Prokop is an associate professor with Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine’s (MSUCOM) Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and a clinical associate professor for the International College of Osteopathic Medicine in Milan, Italy. An MSUCOM graduate, Prokop holds numerous fellowships and is a member of several professional medical associations. He is on the governor’s Advisory Committee on Pain and Symptom Management and is an Ingham Osteopathic Association past president.

CRAIG GLINES, D.O., MSBA, FACOOG, Trustee

JOHN W. SEALEY, D.O., Trustee Dr. Sealey is a private practice thoracic and vascular surgeon in Metro Detroit. He maintains hospital affiliations with Harper University, Sinai-Grace, Detroit Receiving, St. John Macomb and St. John Oakland hospitals. He is also associate program director for the general surgery osteopathic residency program at Sinai Grace Hospital. An American College of Osteopathic Surgeons fellow, Sealey earned his credentials from Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine and North Carolina Central University.

Dr. Glines currently serves as Director of Medical Education, Associate Medical Director of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program at Oakwood Southshore Medical Center in Trenton. Additionally, Dr. Glines is the Women’s Health Expert for Medicaid Modernization, a multistate collaboration project. He serves as Expert Medical Reviewer of Medical Malpractice Claims for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, and on Clinical Practices and Processes for New Technologies and Interventions for the Federal Agency for Health Research and Quality. Dr. Glines received his Doctorate from Michigan State University, College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he is also elected to the Governing Board of the Statewide Campus System. He was board certified and granted Fellowship in the ACOOG. He has served as Clinical Professor of OB/GYN at both MSU and Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. At LECOM, he additionally served as Co-Director of the Reproductive Systems Course and was the Chief to the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Glines has thrice been honored as Outstanding Clinician of the Year at LECOM.

Dr. Wolf is Chief of Interventional Radiology at Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital in Commerce and the program director of the radiology residency program there. He is a clinical assistant professor of diagnostic radiology with Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He earned his credentials from Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine and Eastern Michigan University.

Dr. Wolf is board certified in Diagnostic Radiology with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Vascular and Interventional Radiology by the American Osteopathic Board of Radiology. In addition to MOA, he is active with the American Osteopathic College of Radiology (AOCR) and is a fellow of the AOCR.

JEFFREY POSTLEWAITE, D.O., Trustee

JASPER YUNG, D.O., Intern-Resident Trustee

Dr. Postlewaite is the OB/GYN Program Director for Metro Health Hospital in Wyoming. He is a graduate of the Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine, completing his residency in OB/GYN at the Chicago Osteopathic Hospital. Dr. Postlewaite has served as President of and was honored in 2007 as Distinguished Fellow to the ACOOG; he additionally serves the ACOOG as Board Member of the Medical Education Foundation, and was Secretary/Treasure from 2005 to 2009. He is currently an AOBOG member and Board examiner, and is the Vice Chair to the Graduate Medical Education Committee. At Metro Health Hospital, he serves the Credentials Committee and has been the OB/GYN Program Director since 2011. Dr. Postlewaite was named Outstanding Physician of the Year in 2003 by Delnor Hospital, where he also served as President to the Delnor Medical Staff, Board of Directors and Trustees member, and was Chairman of the Credentialing Committee.

BRUCE A. WOLF, D.O., Trustee

Dr. Yung is the EM/IM Chief Resident at St. John Macomb-Oakland Hospital, Osteopathic Division. He is a graduate of Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine, Florida, completing his internship at St. John Hospital.

He currently serves as the Chair of the MOA Council of Interns/Residents, with past service as Vice-Chair and as the Resident Delegate Representative for MOA Oakland County. Dr. Yung has additionally served as Alternate Delegate Representative for the AOA House of Delegates and was Resident Representative for the MSU-SCS Educational Standards Committee. He volunteers at St. Joseph’s Mercy Hospital and at the Rasak Family Clinic. He is a member of UAAO, MSUCOM, ACOEP, ACOI, and AMA.

This session is a 4-hour live training. The second half of the course is a 4-hour online self-study & exam. The combined face-to-face training and online self-study/exam will provide the required 8 hours needed to obtain the waiver to prescribe buprenorphine in office-based treatment of opioid dependence. Participants will receive instructions on how to access the online study via email after the first session is completed. Mandatory sign-in/out is required for documentation of attendance.

he Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) has developed a simplified and convenient method to obtain CME credit for the 115th Annual Spring Scientific Convention through the webbased CME Scanning System, Evaluation and Certificate of Attestation process.

Computer kiosks are located in room 311-A for your convenience, MOA staff available to assist.

Scanners will be located outside of lecture rooms and at MOA registration.

Thursday Luncheon Boston Marathon Bombing: Medical Preparation and Teamwork Martin S. Levine, D.O., MPH, FACOFP dist

Dr. Sam Fillingane is dedicated to cardiovascular risk reduction. His passion for CV risk reduction led him to develop a treatment protocol for cardiovascular disease that has had great success in reducing cardiovascular events in a high-risk patient population. As the host of the national television program "Straight to the Heart," Fillingane sought to help viewers beat cardiovascular disease by sharing his expertise and knowledge. Dr. Fillingane is a graduate of Kansas City College of Osteopathic Medicine and Biosciences. Dr. Fillingane also did his rotating internship in Kansas City at Lakeside Hospital, which included cardiology training at St. Luke’s Hospital. Dr. Fillingane is the founder and CEO of Fillingane Medical Clinic in Jackson, Mississippi and a medical director for Jackson Sleep Laboratory. He was selected as the AOA Mentor of the Year in 2009 and is a Fellow in the American Society of Laser Medicine and Surgery.

As sports medicine physician for the Boston marathon, Dr. Levine brings a unique perspective to the Boston Marathon bombing tragedy. A distinguished fellow of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians, Dr. Levine has a family practice in Bayonne, N.J., and Jersey City, N.J. He serves as associate dean for educational development, professor of family medicine and osteopathic manipulative medicine at the Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City. Dr. Levine also serves as discipline chief of family medicine and associate professor of clinical family medicine at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine's New Jersey Clinical Campus based at Seton Hall University School of Health and Medical Sciences. He was the founding director and DME of the Family Medicine Residency at Christ Hospital in Jersey City. Dr. Levine has served on the American Osteopathic Association’s Board of Trustees since 2000; becoming its 115th President from July 2011July 2012.

Daniel Maxwell, D.O.

Meredith L. Perry, D.O.

Dr. Daniel Maxwell is the director of Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine of Northeast Michigan in Alpena, Michigan and Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Michigan State University. Dr. Maxwell is on the leading edge of Alpha-1 treatment, identifying 18 patients with the genetic disorder in 1 year alone.

He is board certified in sleep medicine, critical care medicine, pulmonary diseases and internal medicine.

Dr. Maxwell serves on the medical staff of Alpena Regional Medical Center and is the former program director for the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship program at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital Medical Center/McLaren Oakland. He was a partner at Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Consultants and Director of Clarkston Sleep Center in Clarkston, Michigan. Dr. Maxwell is a decorated veteran and former Commander in the Medical Corps of the United States Naval Reserve. He has served as consultant for Critical Care Medicine and chair of Critical Care Medicine Test Construction Committee for the American Osteopathic Board of Internal Medicine.

Dr. Perry was a senior flight surgeon in the U.S. Navy, deployed to Afghanistan, where her squadron was involved in a mid-air collision in 2009. Four of her patients and friends died. A 2006 graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Perry is now a resident in urology at Detroit Medical Center. Dr. Perry joined Fatigues to Fabulous, an organization that helps female veterans find employment and transition to the civilian world. Through this organization, Dr. Perry speaks about her recovery from PTSD from that 2009 event, inspiring other veterans to manage their own PTSD. She is a 2008 graduate of the Naval Aviation Medicine Institute.

Dr. Perry completed her general surgery residency at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital. In active U.S. Navy duty from 2007 to 2011, Dr. Perry served as Officer in Charge of the Occupational Health Clinic at Naval Surface Warfare Center in Indiana and as Officer in Charge of Marine Air Group 40 Flight Line Air Station at Camp Bastion in Afghanistan.

Scientific Research Exhibits

he MOA hosts Scientific Research Exhibit Competitions during the spring and autumn conventions. These competitions provide osteopathic medical students, residents, fellows and attending level physicians an opportunity to present their medical and scientific research to our profession. The SRE event demonstrates the very best of what osteopathic medicine is and reaffirms the profession’s commitment to the advancement of science in osteopathic medicine.

General Information Complete the exhibit application (http://mi-osteopathic.org/SRE) and submit to the Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) by May 1, 2014. This deadline will be strictly enforced.

If you submit after the May 1, 2014 deadline, the SRE Committee will contact you if they wish to accept your submission.

All contributing authors will be notified via email that their electronic applications have been successfully received by the MOA, including the entirety of the abstract.

Applications are processed by the MOA on a first-come, first-served basis for review by the Scientific Research Exhibit (SRE) Committee. Submissions will be accepted for presentations by the SRE Committee only if they meet currently acceptable academic and scientific standards, including proper abstract format that includes a summary of data. The SRE Committee reserves the right to reject applications and limit the number of entries.

The SRE Committee will inform applicants no later than May 8, 2014 whether their applications have been accepted for presentation at the 2014 MOA Spring Scientific Research Exhibit, along with a reminder of exhibit information details.

COBO Center Parking *Parking at COBO Center is $10/day and is NOT included in registration.

COBO Rooftop Parking

From front of COBO Center, go north to Congress Street. Turn left, stay right lane to circular ramp between Second and Third Streets.

From the Lodge US-10 south, take the Howard Street exit to Fort Street. Left on Fort one block and turn right on Third Street. Proceed to circular ramp to roof parking.

COBO Center is located in the heart of downtown Detroit. Currently, COBO Center has 2,000 parking spaces available on a first come first serve basis at the Cobo Roof Deck, Washington Blvd., and in the COBO Center Congress Street Garage.

Both garages have elevator access to the MOA Convention on levels 3 and 4.

Daily parking rate is $10. COBO parking garages do not offer in and out parking rate, you will be charged $10 each time you enter the parking garage.

Crowne Plaza Detroit Parking Facts: Valet parking for MOA overnight guests is $15 per day. In and out parking is allowed at no additional cost.

Detroit People Mover Facts: A Detroit People Mover station is located inside COBO Center on the fourth floor near Congress Street.

The Detroit People Mover is a fully automated light rail system. The 2.9 mile system provides connections between government buildings, sports arenas, exhibition centers, major hotels, as well as commercial, banking and retail districts. Round trip on the system is approximately 15 minutes. People Mover fare is 75 cents. There are 13 stops including Greektown and the Renaissance Center. Pick up a free map outside the People Mover station on level 4 of the COBO Center.
