Social experiment, sport and crime dominate the new age of factual to today’s box-set documentaries that the SVODs have driven of late, for example 2015’s Making A Murderer. These box-sets which exhaustively cover tough subjects from multiple perspectives, have raised the value of this genre,” Lin said. “A number of these shows have also been praised for their extraordinary levels of access, cutting between multiple parallel narratives, shifting audiences from senior female viewers to a wider demographic.” And existing true-crime content is “being curated into new VOD libraries”, one example being A&E’s Crime Central, which launched in February of this year and featuring a library of more than 900 shows at launch, drawing from A&E,
Michelle Lin, manager, Asia Pacific, at UK-based research company K7 Media, presented Factual Trends, a virtual session on day-two of MIPTV Online+ LOADED with video clips, K7 Media’s Factual Trends session focused on how trends in factual TV have developed over the past decade. One observation was how many social-experiment series and specials are finding their way on to our screens. “We have seen quite a few examples in the late 2010s — shows focusing on experiments with vegetarian and vegan diets, stand-out examples including Travel With A Goat (Insight TV), Meat The Family (C4) and Veganville (BBC3).” She added: “Another successful format from 2019 was Red Arrow’s The Restaurant That Makes Mistakes, which sets out to see if running a restaurant could help people suffering from dementia to improve their memories and their living conditions.” There is a wealth of topics to explore in the social-experiment genre, she said, for example “politics, race, gender, nationalism, migration, technology, ethics and climate change. And even though social experiment TV isn’t a new style of programming, the surge has been comparatively recent and is continuing into the 2020s.” An example of current programming in this genre was the NPO series, The Opposites, which observes two groups of 20 taking part in a series of experiments to find out how different they really are. Each group represents an opposing stereotype, such as young and old or meat-eaters and vegans. “In the coming years we are going to see more social-experiment TV featuring climate change. And they won’t be passive, one-way preaching documentaries; instead they will be fun, shows featuring
interactive experiments,” Lin said Live sports are taking a hit Because of the current COVID-19 outbreak, leaving sports fans frustrated while stuck at home. “However, the good news is that there are some upcoming docu-series unveiling the stories and secrets of hot-blooded sports teams and inspiring athletes,” she said. “Documentaries on sports have never dropped in popularity. And while live sports coverage has been the linear broadcasters’ battleground, digital platforms have been presenting excellent documentaries with inspiring stories that can be found in all sorts of sports.” Following the success of 2018’s All Or Nothing: Manchester City from Amazon, the All Or Nothing brand has expanded with two new behind-the-scenes exclusive sports stories from the streamer. “Fans get to follow the stories of the Brazilian national soccer team and their rise to become the top team in South America after a heroic performance at 2019’s Copa America,” Lin said. “The second upcoming series, All Or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur, will look inside the team’s brand new 62,000-seater stadium in North London, as well as the results on the pitch, which have not been great with rumours of in-team unrest and the exit of manager Mauricio Pochettino.” The crime genre has shifted from the magazine-style crime information shows of the past, “which targeted the middle-aged Michelle Lin, manager, female audience, Asia Pacific, at K7 Media

History and Lifetime series and specials.” And the new players are getting in on the act with premium shortform platform Quibi unveiling a number of more unusual, original quick-bite crime formats among its newly-announced raft of shows. And skewing the genre, Quibi will also mash home renovation with true crime in Murder House Flip, where renovation experts, spiritual healers and forensic specialists will visit some of the most infamous houses in the US to help reveal the history behind the homes, cleanse them of their past and transform them into more attractive places to live. Blue Ant reacts fast to global crisis DISTRIBUTOR Blue Ant International has unveiled a new slate that includes over 60 hours of new premium content across its tent-pole categories, including high-impact documentary series, factual entertainment and specialist factual. The titles feature in its Spring Release catalogue that was compiled following the cancellation of MIPTV and the shutting down of transport around the world. “We’ve been able to be very nimble and react quickly to the global situation. In particular, we’ve now been in more constant contact with our buyers in lieu of MIPTV and face-to-face meetings,” senior vice-president, co-productions and sales, international, Blue Ant Media, Ludo Dufour said. “The on-going dialogues with our buyers has been critical in responding
to requests and finding solutions to fill programming gaps on an immediate basis that are a result of delayed production deliveries. We’re keeping our finger on the pulse of our clients’ specific programming gaps and finding bespoke solutions to the very timely issues they might be facing.” Dufour said that the company is focusing on family-oriented content in the current climate. “Our Natural History category continues to be quite popular because of its appeal for audiences of all ages around the world,” he said. In that genre new releases include Malawi Wildlife Rescue and Amazing Animal Friends. “We’ve significantly beefed up our offering of high-impact documentaries and factual series, which have had an increase in demand, by adding
titles such as two new unique seasons of the award-winning series Prison and Old School For Lazy Kids.” He added: “In helping buyers fill gaps in their programming schedules, in light of the global COVID-19 crisis, we are pointing to programming in our catalogue that is heartwarming, educational and great for co-viewing such as Dogs With Extraordinary Jobs and the long-running series Best Cakes Wins.” Dufour said that before the crisis, he was seeing more demand for premium content “that is relatable and authentic with a high level of compelling storytelling”. He added: “We were also seeing an increased interest in having talent and credentials attached to series and documentaries. Titles in our catalogue that reflect these are Prison, a raw and emotional docu-series, which won Best Documentary Series at the Grierson Awards, the Royal Television Society Awards and the Broadcast Awards. The series also received a 2019 BAFTA nomination for Best Factual Series, for its first season. Also, Detention Adventure, a live-action kids series, which has been racking up international sales and recently won a Kidscreen Award for Best Web Series and in Canada was nominated for two Canadian Screen Awards.” Mid-crisis, Dufour is seeing an increase in demand for finished programming. “The market for acquisitions is gathering pace and we’re seeing more demand than ever for our catalogue. At the same time, we are mitigating our acquisition and co-financing strategy for the

months and year ahead. In particular, we’re ensuring that we make acquisition decisions on projects that have secure production pipelines in place and that will enable us to commit to programming that can be delivered for MIPCOM 2020 launch list and MIPTV 2021.” With MIPTV cancelled for 2020, Dufours said the company is talking to buyers and producers, remotely, every day. “In many ways it has strengthened our relationships as we navigate through this challenging time together,” he said. “The cancellation of MIPTV won’t affect our relationships. However, it has affected the opportunity to have ad-hoc meetings that happen in the aisles of the Palais and out on the Croisette. Having the whole industry in one place for an entire week really does help facilitate those informal, in-person meet-ups. Also, MIPTV gives us the opportunity to get perspective by going to panels and seeing the announcements of your industry peers, which creates great conversation around the industry and will be missed this spring.”

All3Media keeps its MIP meetings alive
Client meetings set up for MIPTV by global production and distribution giant All3Media have taken place remotely this week. Here is some of what they have been discussing
All Creatures Great And Small (All3Media International)
A HEADLINE title for All3Media this year is the 7 x 60 mins series All Creatures Great And Small. Set in England’s picturesque Yorkshire dales in the 1930s, it is based on the best-selling novels by the late writer and veterinary surgeon James Herriot and tells the part-autobiographical story of a newly qualified vet who lands a job in the village of Darrowby. A Playground Entertainment production for Channel 5 (UK) and Masterpiece in the US, All3Media International executive vice-president, EMEA, Stephen Driscoll said it was “a major hit with buyers at our Upfront screening, and the show is filmed and in the final stages of post which are ongoing”. He added: “Its family-friendly warmth makes it popular for public-service broadcaster clients around the world — and we’ve also had interest from SVODs who want that broader audience. Multiple conversations are ongoing — but signed deals include the co-producer WGBH/PBS.” Another scripted highlight is Roadkill, (4 x 60 mins), a British political thriller from writer David Hare, produced by The
Forge, producers of The Accident and National Treasure. Hugh Laurie stars as charismatic politician Peter Laurence, alongside Helen McCrory and Sidse Babett Knudsen, with Laurie’s appeal attracting interest from “a range of broadcasters across the EMEA region”, according to Driscoll. “There are several deals at signature stage across the region and the show is in the final stages of post production, so available for a late Q3/Q4 delivery.” All3Media’s factual roster includes the return of Gordon, Gino And Fred’s Road Trip (5 x 60 mins), in which three friends travel around the Americas. The hit BAFTA-nominated series from Studio Ramsay follows the three chefs on a quest to find the best ingredients, cooks and characters in some stunning locations. “Over 30 broadcasters around the world picked up season one of the show — and have continued through to season two, which was hotly anticipated this year,” Driscoll said. “The buyers love the camaraderie between the hosts and the opportunity to see Gordon Ramsay in a more relaxed,
informal persona than he is in his 24 Hours To Hell And Back and Kitchen Nightmares series. Broadcasters now include NatGeo USA, Fox Balkans, Discovery Italy, Foxtel Australia, RTL Netherlands, RTL Germany, TVB Hong Kong and NENT Sweden.” In the field of formats The Hustler, from Studio Lambert for ABC USA, keeps contestants guessing as they work together to build a prize pot and uncover the hustler’s identity. “The Hustler attracted a lot of interest at our Upfronts and we have several conversations ongoing in advance of it’s launch in the US on ABC — it’s a major launch for Studio Lambert, which of course has had some success in the US with Undercover Boss on CBS.” A format pertinent to what’s going on in the world right now is Celebrity Call Centre, a fixed-rig format “which tackles everyday problems with extraordinary solutions”. The call centre is staffed entirely by celebrities with the all-star team on standby to advise members of the public on their problems. The format originally created by Kerfuffle TV has found

success in the UK and the Netherlands.” The appeal of Celebrity Call Centre is its feelgood tone, with real insights from the celebrities’ personal views, experiences and thoughts,” Driscoll said. “And indeed the producers are looking at producing this show direct from individual homes, avoiding studio requirements.”

French-language drama series La Garconne is a first for eOne INTERNATIONAL distribution company eOne has announced its first French-language acquisition. The six-part limited drama series La Garconne is set in Paris during the Roaring Twenties, and follows Louise Kerlac (Laura Smet) who witnesses the murder of a relative committed by government agents. A career forbidden to women at the time, Kerlac is convinced that joining the police will be her best hiding place and also provide the means to investigate the murder. She assumes the identity of her twin brother Antoine (Tom Hygreck) and enters the police force as a man. The international market for drama has changed radically in recent years and productions in foreign or multiple languages are now accepted the world over. “We live in a global marketplace with audiences that appreciate compelling drama regardless of where it is created or language,” eOne head of sales, EMEA, Dan Gopal said. “It is quality that matters most for
our clients and their viewers. La Garconne is a gripping detective crime series set in the lavish Paris of the 1920s, and touches on contemporary issues that society contends with today. This series will appeal to a broad demographic and work well both for linear broadcasters, like commissioner France Television, and streaming platforms around the world. Also from eOne, Last Summer is an unconventional thriller that takes place over three summers — 199395 — in a small Texas town when a popular teen, Kate, is abducted and, seemingly unrelated, a girl called Jeanette, goes from being a sweet, awkward outlier to the most popular girl in town and, by 1995, the most despised person in America. Each episode is told from the point-of-view of one of the two main girls, which will have the viewers’ loyalties constantly shifting as more information is revealed. “The series has resonated with all our partners internationally, the
response has been incredible,” Gopal said. “The combination of the twisting narrative that takes the audience across three summers and between alternating views of our two main protagonists, and the fantastic writing and performances, will have au-

Distributed by Nelvana, the 52 x 11 mins series was created by TV veterans Dustin Ferrer and Amy Steinberg. “In today’s challenging times, lessons in mindfulness, creativity and socio-emotional development are more important than ever,” head of Nelvana Enterprises, Mellany Masterson, said. “The series entertains children all over the world with these strong
universal themes and we are excited to introduce this dynamic monster-sitter duo to Discovery Kids Latin America and its young audience.” Nominated for three Daytime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Preschool Children’s Animated Series, the series follows the adventures of Esme and Roy, “the best monster-sitters in Monsterdale!”. diences gripped throughout the season. Lineup strikes deal with Germany for Belgian game show Switch HIT BELGIAN game show format Switch is to be produced for German broadcaster WDR by Belgian producer Riverside. The show is from international distribution company, Amsterdam-based Lineup Industries. The new local version, titled Quizz Dich Auf 1, will be adapted to fill a 45-minute slot and air weekly. The series launches this month and will be hosted by German television presenter, Guido Cantz. Lineup claims Switch to be “the first quiz in the world that is played without points”. Five contestants stand side-by-side and their position in the line is determined by their answers: the one furthest on the left is in first place, the one furthest to the right is in last place. By solving word puzzles and trivia questions, contestants can switch places. The goal is to stay in the game with increasingly high stakes and be in first place before the final. If a contestant wins the final, they are awarded €1,000. If they lose, the money rolls over until
it’s won. The same five contestants return throughout the week and if a contestant wins all five days, their prize fund is doubled. Julian Curtis, co-founder of Lineup Industries, said: “Studio-based game shows continue to be appealing for both audiences who are looking for event television the whole family can enjoy together, and for broadcasters who are seeking dynamic programmes to boost their primetime schedules. In addition, and timely in the current
climate, Switch only requires a handful of participants and can easily be filmed without a live audience. Its success in Belgium and the Netherlands shows that this is a compelling but simple format which draws viewers to tune in week after week.” Switch was originally commissioned by VRT in Belgium and following its ratings success has now also been commissioned for a fifth season which will air from summer 2020. Lineup Industries holds global format rights.

DRG DRG IS launching two new series from ZCZ Films, the production company founded by presenter and art expert Waldemar Januszczak. Handmade In Bolton (4 x 30 mins) tells the story of Shaun Greenhalgh, one of the UK’s most prolific art forgers. Working from a shed at his parents’ house, he fooled experts for three decades, everything from Roman plates to Gauguin sculptures. After a spell in prison, he decided to use his talent for good and has now teamed up with Dr Janina Ramirez, an Oxford University historian, to recreate artefacts from the past, including a Visigoth jewelled brooch, a pre-Reformation alabaster carving, a Renaissance animal plate, and a 10th-century rock crystal Islamic bottle. The Art Mysteries (4 x 30 mins) sees Januszczak embark on a far-reaching investigation into four great paintings. By highlighting subtle clues, new meanings, and hidden messages, he encourages a reappraisal both of the artist and the familiar canvas. The paintings featured are Gaugin’s The Vision After The Sermon, Van Gogh’s Self-Portrait with Bandaged Ear, Seurat’s Les Poseuses, and Cezanne’s Card Players.

POORHOUSE INTERNATIONAL THE 200th anniversary of Jacques Offenbach is a good opportunity to remind us of the composer Rossini, fondly known as ‘the Mozart of the Champs-Elysees’. A child prodigy on the cello, he studied under Cherubini in Paris and went on to entertain the world with his operettas, sometimes featuring on numerous play bills at the same time. Stage producer Laurent Pelly, with many Offenbach productions to his credit, and Dame Felicity Lott, who charmed Paris with her Belle Helene, guide us through the life of the composer in the documentary Tales Of Offenbach. Clips of his most famous works underpin the story. Germany’s Poorhouse International also represents the recent Lyon Opera production Bluebeard, staged by Laurent Pelly and recorded last year by Telmondis. This is entertainment at its best with Offenbach letting his heroines have the upper hand. This unfortunately cannot be said of Rita Hayworth, who according to her ex-husband Orson Welles, suffered for much of her life. Wichita Films’ new documentary The Love Goddess, narrates the tragic life of the film star as part of its new slate of programming that includes documentary The Witches Of Hollywood, and profiles of Jack Lemmon and William Holden.
