Many young adults think getting a new puppy is a great idea. From the instagram picks to the snuggles, what could possibly go wrong? However, new pet owners tend to ignore the possibilities of late night trips to the vet or house training the puppy. There are many things to consider before adopting a dog—especially if you’re getting a puppy because it is a drastic decision. First, you must consider how much free time you actually have. Are you willing to give up a majority of your spare time? This is especially crucial to consider if you’re wanting a puppy because you will have to take the time to teach it everything it needs to know. If you will be gone for long periods of time, ask amongst your trusted friends to make a plan for him or her to help out when you cannot be there because it will take a while for a dog to adjust to the new atmosphere. Unless you are fortunate enough to have some help, many students have to work and pay for everything on their own. Having to afford a dog is a huge stressor, but it helps to make a budget and consider how much you spend on bills, food, etc. and how much that leaves for your new pet. To put it into perspective, research about how much it will cost per month to take care of a dog and ask your friends who have pets how they budget. It’s written by CHELSEA HARPER important to remember that you might have to pay additional charges for shots and checkups, so start photography by KRISTEN UPPERCUE saving in advance. You’ll definitely have to give up more than one luxury to be able to afford food, proper vet care, treats, toys and anything else your dog may need, so make sure you’re willing and ready to do that.

You have to prepare yourself and your home for a new dog. Do your research, talk to your landlord and really consider the pros and cons before adopting. When you know you’re ready, go to local animal shelters and look for the one that will be the perfect addition to your life.

or some people the “great outdoors” just comes naturally, as if they were born with hiking boots on. For others, getting down and dirty with the woods is a little harder. To start, you’re going to need a buddy to go adventuring with you. Setting up tents and reading maps are more fun and easy if you have someone to share it with. Next, you have to find your campsite. It’s pretty much just like renting a hotel. Consider the website recreation.gov to be your new best friend. Once you’ve decided where you’d like to go, you just pick the spot you want, pay for it online and get packing. The most important part of a professional campsite is how you set up your tent. First, lay down a tarp or thick plastic covering. Then, set the tent up on top of that and follow the directions that came with the tent. A really important part of your trip is knowing what to do while you’re there. S’mores and ghost stories will only keep you entertained for so long. Do some research about the area before you go, especially the local hiking trails and parks. The park rangers will be more than happy to tell you about all the great places you can go. They will also have maps in the office of trails and information on other parks you can check out. Make a note though, if you’re going to go hiking, you really need to get a good pair of hiking boots. Finally, you’re going to need to have something to cook with. Most campsites will come with a fire pit and grill. But you probably won’t want to cook after being out adventuring all day. To make things easier, try bringing a kerosene stove and skillet from home with you. These are gas powered stoves that take up little to no space, and also do not require any electric. Just open the valve a little, light it and watch those eggs scramble. It is a little scary to sleep without walls for the first time, but totally worth it. If you have any urge to go camping, hiking or anything else that takes place outdoors you should take advantage of it. Once you’ve seen the night sky without any pollution for the first time, you’ll never get enough. Everyone should go into the wild at some point in his or her life. Your soul will thank you for it.

In society today, body image is as important as it has ever been. Media contributes to a perceived

image of women and men that portrays the need to look perfect. One of the largest challenges we face as young adults in this social media-crazed world is feeling accepted. People don’t feel accepted if they don’t look a certain way or portray that “sexy” image that is unattainable. Somehow, we have to convince ourselves that we are perfectly imperfect. We are good enough just as we are. Body positivity is feeling opportunistic about your image physically. It is looking in the mirror, liking what you see and feeling confident about it. It’s learning and accepting that all body types are equally valuable. It’s when you come up with your own perspectives on what’s healthy and beautiful to you. The idea of body positivity coincides with what your mom used to tell you growing up— “it’s what’s on the inside that counts.” Once you learn to accept and love your body, your mind will perceive yourself as healthier and happier. This changed perspective will then lead to an increased likelihood of working towards and reaching goals in the future. Practicing body positivity leads to a boosted physical and mental confidence. The body positivity movement is about the idea that all bodies are acceptable bodies that deserve love, care and acceptance. It shouldn’t matter what size dress you wear, what color your skin is or your social status. You deserve to feel accepted and loved regardless of your physical appearance. Accepting the way that you look and truly feeling comfortable in your own skin is a long process. You might have days where you feel like a queen and days where you just want to lay in bed with the covers over your head. Falling in love with your scars, your bruises and the prettiest parts of you is a daily battle. It truly is a journey that you must take to change your life. Body positivity is a process that starts small by planting the seeds, which will continue to grow and grow through the years until you accept yourself in full bloom, which means that you accept the good parts about you that you like and the parts that you wish weren’t there. It is a learning process and there will be days that feel like it’s all for nothing, but you must hold strong and keep working through the issues. It’s not about waiting for others to approve the way you look, the way you feel or the way you act, body positivity is about loving yourself despite what others might say. Because once you accept yourself for who you are, nothing will be able to hold you back.

17

If you’re struggling to kickstart your journey to body positivity, here are several ideas to begin: 1. Unfollow Instagram accounts that make you feel insecure about yourself, or take a complete break from social media for a few weeks. This detox will help you more than you know. 2. Read a book related to body positivity. Here are some that our writers absolutely love: The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf & Big Girl: How I Gave Up Dieting and Got A Life by Kelsey Miller 3. Start a blog about your body positivity journey to help you learn about body image and to invite others to join you and maybe even allow others to post their own stories. 4. It’s the little things that count. Drink lots of tea, eat healthy and take care of your skin. Do these small things everyday. written by RILEY SAWICKI & KASSIDY KING graphic by CLAIRE HEMME

It is well known that doctors recommend exercise, which can boost positivity and self-confidence. If you’re body feels healthy and strong, your emotional state will as well. Exercising does not have to always be a strenuous activity. If you want to focus on positive thinking and slow down at work, try yoga. Yoga is a way to exercise your body and mind at the same time without using high intensity. While yoga poses can differ for beginners and experts, this form of exercise allows you to control your workout routine. Some beginner poses to induce positive thinking are cat cow, warrior

II, sukhasana and the child’s pose. These poses are simple and stress free. There are also yoga classes you can take, which allow you to stretch your comfort zone to reach the highest level of positivity. Candlelight Yin classes are meant to strain your muscles during longer poses, which is great for restless minds and stiff bodies. Conscious Flow classes focus on the mind, while Restorative Yoga focuses on that imbalanced feeling to defeat uncertainty. written by MADELYNN WOOD photography by KRISTEN UPPERCUE

BusY Girl’s Guide: Get Fit Let’s face it− we don’t always have the time to set aside two hours to go to the gym, nor do we have the motivation. However, physicians recommend we squeeze in 30 minutes of activity each day, whether it be strength training or cardio. There are many easy stretches you can add throughout the day when you have just enough time for a little exercise, such as waiting for something to print or while listening to voicemail. You can even do this routine in your apartment in between homework assignments.

Finish Line written by RACHEL TETER photography by KRISTEN UPPERCUE

Training for a marathon can seem daunting, especially if you are a college student. Between blisters and a bad grade or two, the process can become overwhelming. It’s hard to balance both school and a training schedule, but it is possible. Here are seven easy ways to kickstart training for a marathon while surviving life as a college student. 1. Best buds for life. Whether it’s a buddy that runs with you or a roommate who yells at you to workout, you need a strong support system. A 10-mile run after a night class seems more plausible if you have an extra person encouraging you to meet your goals. 2. H2-Oh yeah. As my old cross country coach used to say, “Hydration starts the night before.” The more you sweat the more you need to replenish your body with water. 3. Write it out before you work it out. The key to success is to get a journal and fill out how far you need to run each day in one color. Then, with another color write down how far you actually ran and how long it took. 4. Midnight runs, anyone? Your class schedule is probably going to make it impossible to run at the same time everyday. Find times that work for you each day and stick with it! 5. Baby, it’s cold outside. Hopefully, your school has a recreation center and you won’t have to pay for a membership because once it starts getting cold and snowy, that indoor track is going to be your BFF. 6. Grilled chicken never sounded so good. Meal prepping is the best way to keep up with your busy school schedule and make sure you are filling your body with the goodness it needs to perform well.

(Disclaimer: I am nowhere near an expert nor should you start training without talking to a doctor.)

21

7. Do the dang thing. Pay for the race. Lace up your new shoes. Download NikeRun. Tie your ponytail and do it. Reward yourself with things you love after a great workout and be kind to yourself on bad days. It’s a long process but on race day it will be worth the months of training.

Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, or CTE, is a degenerative brain disease caused by repetitive hits to the head over the course of many years. Tau, a protein in the brain, forms clumps that slowly spread, killing brain cells along the way. While many athletes in contact-based sports have the possibility of obtaining CTE later in life, the disease has been specifically linked to football. Thanks to the movie “Concussion” starring Will Smith, which for the first time, brought to light for the general public CTE and its problems and highlights the National Football League’s attempt to cover it up.

In fact, the effects of this disease has caused many professional athletes to retire early, such as Calvin Johnson, Patrick Willis and Jerod Mayo. CTE has also been shown to cause a decline in youth participation in the sport.

From Ken Stabler to Junior Seau, there is no shortage of NFL athletes who have suffered from CTE. In fact, last summer a study, published by JAMA, found CTE in 99 percent of brains that were donated and studied from deceased NFL players.

Even though many people feel the sport is unsafe, the popularity of the NFL is as high as ever. The NFL is the highest watched show on four major networks, ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX. Popularity rates are not declining for high school and college football either. So, there’s no doubt that Americans love football, but at what cost? The focus needs to be on high school and college football. By re-evaluating these levels and making them safer, participation will still remain high, but without the long-term consequences. As for the professional level, that is a debate that will never end. Players understand the risk of the game, but shouldn’t have to assume they’ll get brain damage due to their profession. However, deciding how to change the sports atmosphere to make it safer for athletes is a discussion that should continue until a compromise has been made to protect current and future athletes.

CTE can only be found after the person is deceased and the brain can be examined. This leaves many cases to be undiscovered. One recent incident that brought CTE to light was the death of Aaron Hernandez. A study of his brain showed that he had Stage 3 CTE, out of four stages. The first stage of the disease is the least severe and associated with headaches and difficulty concentrating, according to a journal published in Brain. The third stage is where the emotional and memory symptoms of stage two worsen. In the last stage, people experience dementia symptoms, which is sometimes confused with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

It is becoming harder and harder for parents to let their children play football and other contact-based sports. A survey by USA today showed that 62.3 percent of parents feel that it is unsafe for children to play football under the age of 12. The survey also found that 100 percent of parents have been affected in some way by concussions in the sport.

Flare pants flatter almost every body type—the trick is to find the perfect pair. Complete the vintage look by pairing the pants with a tight turtleneck and cool jacket.

26

A-line dresses and skirts can be seen just about everywhere and are perfect for combining the grunge and punk vibes with a feminine chic feeling. To make the pieces more winter friendly, add a long-sleeve top and festive tights with glitter or sparkles to compliment the holiday season.

27

A jacket lined with wool was a staple of the ‘70s because of the comfort it provided during the cold winter days. Pair the jacket with warm leggings to rock that comfortable look.

28

Corduroy pieces like pants or skirts add a vintage feel to any look, making it the perfect retro outfit. Layer this piece with a solid turtleneck and winter boots.

29

Functionally, turtlenecks are great to stay warm, yet stylishly, the piece goes with any outfit. Tight turtlenecks can be used to layer under overalls, dresses, jumpsuits and other sweaters. Nothing can beat a loose and cozy sweater turtleneck and a warm latte on a bitterly cold winter day.
