PROJECT DESCRIPTION As new work patterns emerge, it is an ideal time to explore how coworking spaces can better support the needs of workers. Using products from the Steelcase Inc. Portfolio, the challenge was to design a coworking environment for the future that pushes the envelope, meets the program objectives, and represents what is next with coworking environments. Members of this environment can include IT consultants, web developers, researchers, independent designers, financial consultants, and more.
B
NIC
CONCEPT NEXT is a progressive coworking space that allows each person to grow as an employee, employer, or coworker, no matter what the business is. Imagine yourself completely stuck in your work and you need a breakthrough;; NEXT is the place to go. It is designed to feel very inviting, comfortable, functional, and flexible for any type of work. As you walk in, past the reception, the ideation zone is meant to get your thoughts out and maybe be influenced by someone else’s. Around the cafe, you have the option to take the stairs or elevator to the next level; and the next level in your work. Either way you choose, you will have the option of working individually or collaborating with others. Wherever you are most comfortable will determine when your breakthrough moment will be. This can occur in private enclaves, project rooms, the open office area, or the forum classroom. With a neutral palette and pops of color, NEXT is designed to keep you energetic and focused on your work. Although each space is designed for a different work environment, they are all cohesive in the sense that they all come together as one space to make its users are most comfortable.

The horizontal 2x4 supports will be screwed from the top and bottom into the vertical 2x4 studs. The wood frame wall will be made in full, then put up as one piece. Insulation will be installed with gypsum board as the finish. The gypsum board is covered with Carnegie Xorel Dash Wall covering. To connect the wood frame wall to the cement floor, first lay a piece of construction foam between the two. Then, drill a hole through all three 1/8” larger than the size of the bolt. Use Sure Anchor J50 to secure the bolt. This meets ASTM C-881, which is “Standard Specifications for Epoxy-Resin Based Bonding Systems for Concrete.” The key is to create a flat spot on the bolt to prevent it from working its way loose. Once the bolt is put in place, insert a washer, and a nut to secure the attachment.

As an individual project, NEXT put many of my skills to the test, especially time management. I learned a lot about the new coworking environment through my research prior to the project, which allowed me to solve the problem with a logical floor plan, calm but exciting color palette, and various lighting for each work environment.

CONCEPT Di Magno showcases freedom and serenity throughout the space. The lighting will feel refreshing to those who enter and bring heightened emotions to the fashions. The contrast of fluid elements and structural lines evoke high energy, energy, while the neutrals provide a back drop to accentuate the most intricate details on the clothing. Cool and refreshing colors of the collection will give a sense of lightness as you mindfully and consciously experience the space.

CLIENT PROFILE Fabiana Di Magno is a very successful fashion design student, and Latina is the city where Fabiana’s fondness of fabrics and textiles originated. She was always intrigued when observing the process of printing and making of textiles. Fabiana appreciates the flexibility and range of fabrics she can work with to create her own three-dimensional masterpieces. She is inspired by the painting “The Great Wave,” by Hokusai, not only by color interpretation, but also the analogy of danger. Her most admired line “I’m Blu,” blossomed early on in her career as a result of her inspirations. Fabiana’s love for fabrics, especially Japanese fabrics, intrigued her to create minimalist designs using shapes and origami. Within her designs, Fabiana portrays freedom, energy, and essentiality, however, she demands exquisite craftsmanship and detail during the production of her designs.

A few of the biggest things I learned during this project is how to work in metric scale, communicate with a language barrier, and making the designs appropriate to a city overseas. It was the first project we worked with an existing client, which taught me to design to fit the client's wants, instead of my own.

HOSPITALITY Fall 2013 | Partner Project
Daily Grind PROJECT DESCRIPTION To see and understand color, shape and form. To get your inspiration and impetus from an abstract painting as a point of departure for the study of analysis of color, line, texture, shape and form. To synthesize your analysis into a threedimensional representation of the observed elements of design. To translate the three-dimensional representation into a spatial experience creating an interior space which will demonstrate the emotional content of the threedimensional piece. You will explore and understand the ways principles and elements of design can be manipulated to define and enrich an interior place. You will also explore and understand spatial relationships and the relationship of space to the circulation system within a place.
CONCEPT Daily Grind, inspired by Mark Grotoajn's "Untitled Butterfly," is a cafe for students, faculty, and staff to come enjoy a fresh cup of daily ground coffee, study, or meet with friends and colleagues. The colored transparent partitions create an inviting environment and allow a sense of freedom to move about the cafe. With a variety of colored triangles, this cafe allows for an opportunity for everyone to feel connected to themselves, others, and the environment. The variety of seating create an intimate and comfortable space. With the smell of fresh coffee, background music, various colors and textures, this cafe will be the most talked about on campus.

Cedar Rapids Carnegie Library CONCEPT The Carnegie Library will be rehabilitated using universal design, and the goal is to restore original materials that are found throughout the space including the terrazzo floor and wood trim, while making it accessible for catering events, such as wedding receptions, dances, museum exhibitions, recitals, and more.
Carnegie Library Exterior
PROJECT DESCRIPTION Beginning in 1892, 101 libraries were constructed in Iowa using grant money from Andrew Carnegie. One of these in particular, the Cedar Rapids Library, is the focus for this research and needs to be rehabilitated and brought back to its original beauty, layout, and style. Keeping it appropriate to the time period and architectural style, it must accommodate universal design and have multiple applications throughout the space.
35
Through analysis of the time period and style, we will incorporate contemporary furniture into the space while keeping the feel of the original. The space will be luxurious and have both public and private spaces for all users. Lighting will be enhanced through recessed cans, but chandeliers will still be the main fixtures used for aesthetic appeal. Colors will be appropriate to the original scheme, and the plan will cater to both youth and adults. Form and function will be prevalent in the space, and the library will be versatile for a variety of occasions.

FLOOR PLAN As you walk in the front doors, you are greeted with a reception desk. From there, the reading room is on the left, which consists of soft seating for reading, as well as work tables for both children and adults. The multi-function area includes a bar for a more relaxed environment with music. Lastly, the cafe offers snacks, as well as another quiet area to sit down and work.

This was one of the more challenging projects because of the details that had to be taken into consideration, between original materials, finishes, and layout of the floor plan. My attention to detail is a skill that grew even further with this project.

Gustafson Classical Luxury Home PROJECT DESCRIPTION Develop a residential interior concept for Eric and Anna Gustafson, their ill mother, and guests. The home is located in Wayzata, Minnesota and must combine historical influence in a contemporary form. It must also reflect their diverse interests while appearing unified, but still being suitable to entertain guests. The clients have allotted for a $1.5 million budget, specifically for the interior elements.
CONCEPT To provide the Gustafson’s with a timeless space by developing a design that incorporates a modern take on Classical Roman and Greek elements. Our goal was to create a space that is both intimate and luxurious, as well as suitable for entertaining guests.

For this project, we were able to travel to Minnesota to visit the site this house was going to be built. Throughout designing this home, I learned more about Classical Roman and Greek styles, but still keeping a modern take on it. I also learned how to use Revit, from building furniture to rendering perspectives.

HEALTHCARE Spring 2015 | Partner Project
Welcome to Pasillo PROJECT DESCRIPTION To create an assisted living home in the new and upcoming Panama Pacifico. This also includes the shell of the building. Required spaces include entrance/lobby/reception, memory care, one bedroom, and two bedroom apartments, dining room, and a "wow" space of any kind. It must follow all ADA codes appropriate for each space within a $10 million budget.
CONCEPT
49
The new Panama Pacifico Senior Living home, Pasillo, will provide a positive transition for the aging generation. Succor has put emphasis on research and developed a building that will not only be a home for seniors, but a place they can thrive in a healthy community. The Green House model will be used to create three small houses, two for assisted living and a secure wing for memory care residents. Each house will have between 8-10 residents and will be equipped with their own kitchens, living, and staff space. Within the houses, the private apartments feature a longitudinal plan allowing windows to be present in every room. The effects of the daylight will not only help to reduce energy cost, but will aid in healing for the aging residents. Overall, the building itself will be a large stepping stone for staff and families to create an incredible living experience for their loved ones.
Lobby + Reception
MEET THE DESIGNERS Succor is our business that designs to meet the requirements and tastes of who we are designing for with careful attention to detail. Throughout this project, I learned how to design an interior from the inside out. I also learned how to work within a budget, consciously being aware of how much materials and finishes cost. Completing construction documents allowed my knowledge to expand to a different level. Not only did I benefit in my design skills, but I learned how to design for the assisted living and memory care community.
