The Lightwell Intro II | Fall 2015 Jason Welty 4 weeks

Presenting Different Types of Light

These collages were taken from the Waterwall project undergoing light experiences. The collages are made abstractly using Photoshop in order to present each light through different dramatic paths.

Tenebristic:

a contrast between light and dark in an artwork, where the dark has a more dramatic effect on the art.

Chiaroscuro:

the contrast between light and dark in an art work presenting a dramatic effect between the two shades.

Chromatic:

the reflection of colored light from a colored surface that allows the light to diffuse with the reflected color.

Chiarscuro Light

Tenebristic Light

Studing Carravagio’s work of Tenebrism and Chiarscurro, the study models were intended to interpret the path of light to create a dramatic effect. The black board was used as a material to show the creation of light paths without being disturbed with reflected light.

These two section axonometric drawings display the tectonics of the project and the way materials are used to function as a lightwell. The first drawing focuses on the chromatic light at one end of the project as well as the tectonical planes made from wood. The second drawing emphasizes the smaller tectonic planes in the middle of the project. This drawing focuses on the rythmic language formed between the museum board and the wood which forms tenebristic and chiarscuro light effects.

Section Axonometric Drawings

This section drawing shows the inner parts of the project. The light blue line resembles the datum that flows throught the project. The pink shades shows the reflection of chromatic light within the spaces that contains color. The dark grey hows the cut parts.

The wood and museum board work together to create contrast between light and dark in order to highlight important moments of the model. Studying Steven Holl’s work of chromatic light, the idea represented in the first picture is displaying the idea behind his work. The creation of dramatic scene with a hint of pink reflected light. The picture in the middle resembles chiarscuro and the last picture displays tenebristic light that resembles the study of Caravaggio’s painting and his way of representing those lightwells.

The Waterwall Intro II | Fall 2015 Jason Welty 4 weeks

The Waterwall began with studying two projects: The Leca pools by Alvaro Siza in Portugal and Les Beins du Docks by Jean Nouvel in Havre, France. The first two sketches above remarks the outline of the cities and the third resembles the overlay of these sketches. The colors show improtant elements in the city. In Leca pools the yellow marks the apartments that are linked to the pools, and the red displays the bridge in Havre that connects the Docks to the city. The diagramic models on the right are derived from the sketches and represent the cities studies.

Les Bains Du Docks Abstract Model

Part of Leca Pool Model

The Leca Pools are located in a public area to a more open space. The pools face the ocean and are below the city level. In the model above, the pools are represented as an open space between the basswood sticks connected to the outer spaces. The model below shows the building of Les Bains du Docks location and the bridge that connects where the building is build to the rest of the city. The highlighted elements are the water location (vertically) and the connecting elements (horizontally).

Part of Les Bains du Docks Model

These collages are an abstract representation of the Leca Pools project and Le Bains Du Docks represented previously with Therme Vals by Peter Zuthmor located in Switzerland. The first collage is a combination of the two diagramatic models forming a path for water through the apretures of the models. The second collage combines the floor plan being imagined with new different water pools and rearrangement of the original floor plan. The third collage combines

Draft Model

Final Model

The draft model is the idea of linkage between the context and the wall. The context consists of overlapping mass fragments creating a system of rhythm and repetition. The wall lays and forms another system with the context. The apertures created within the context and the tectonics of the wall allow the movement of light and water to pass through in an organized progression.

These section drawings display the path taken through the waterwall. The drawing on the left shows the entrance of the wall, and the drawing on the right shows the end of the model looking forward at the other end.

Le Petit Cabanon Intro II | Fall 2015 Jason Welty 4 weeks

Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye is one of the buildings that created an impact in architecture. The axonometric shows the breaking down of the “free spaces” inside the Villa that comes in alignment with other free spaces. The broken down spaces are used to design a cabin for Le Corbusier. The moving parts are required to emphasize connection and change in scale.

This zoomed in axonometric drawing displays the skeleton part of the project. The gray shaded parts highlight the moving pieces constructed in the model. The axonometric was an exercise that helps relating all parts of the project to each other, as the three parts are connected through the voids and mass.

Horizonal Shift: The first movement piece provides a connection between two parts of the model. The function of this piece is to create a network through all sides of the project.

Pivoting Balcony: The balcony rotates 270 degrees where it can pivot it’s place at any side of the project. This piece works as a an important space, mainly highlighted as Le Corbusier’s painting room to provide inspiration.

The drawing on the left display a floor plan for Le Petite Cabanon. The parts of the model is represented through different line weights to show the difference in depth through different parts. The drawing on the right is a section to demonstrate different elevations present in the project.

Small Scale Views

The Musical Composition Primavera by Ludvico Einaudi The project consisted of different elements with specified scale to be broken down in a certain way through space, mass, and volume to represent the musical composition.Three models were worked on with different scales and different analogues that refers back to the composition. The small scale represent the journey one feels while listening to the song, and the medium scale demonstrates the instruments and the loudness of the composition.

Medium Scale

Final Model

The construction of the final model depends on the concept and how the ideas come together. The main representation is in the flow of the music in the song. The shifted planes form a system that holds the rest of the elements together and allows different elements to compose different spaces.

Final Model

The image on the left displays the heirarchy of the composition. The moment where the musical instruments unit and create a beautiful piece of art to our ears. In architectural terms, different scales combine and create a moment of unity. The spaces experience different progressions through portals and thresholds that allow them to overlap and create a connection. The light creats a moment of direction that highlights the moment where the instruments unite and the expression of the composition changes from smooth to loud.

A continuation of the short movie “The Red Balloon by French filmmaker Albert Lamorisse was written to direct the spaces for this project. The model represents the movement of the boy through the events of the story and the locations he encountered. These events are represented with the different materials used in the model. The story ends with an intimate moment of the boy finding his father. This moment is used as the hierarchy of the model.

The intimate moment is built with a high rise of planes forming a system of complex spaces as shown in the figure on the left. The light is an important element through the constructing process. The light represents the movement of the child as he transports from one location to the other. The images on the right demonstrate the light taking a path and creating pause moments between the spaces.

The Matrix of Downtown Ljubljana Intro to Digital Design | Fall 2015 Jeff McDowell 3 months

Phase One: Using Google Earth application, the image of Downtown Ljubljana, Slovania was captured. Then the image was entered in Auto Cad in order to trace parts of the cities with different layers. The main layers were the red (0.18 mm) and yellow (0.25 mm) where the red marked the streets, and the yellow marked the buildings. The image on the right demonstrates a plotted image of the final trace of the city.

Phase Two: Three architectectural vocabulary words were picked (mass, connection, and void) to determine the matrix of the plotted image of Downtown Ljubljana. The sketches display the ideas of how the matrix emerged. Using 6 copies of the plotted drawing from the city, the skeleton of the model was done. The matrix lines connect same elements from one copy to the other. The important elements in the cities differ, thus the lines connecting them differ in sizes.

Connection

Final Model

Phase Three: The model went through the process of rendering. The matric lines and mass added had specific materials. The mass is formed to glass, the void is represented with marble, and the connections are turned into wood. The model became in an artistic form representing Ljubljana. It was later on added to a summer and a winter scene in Slovania weather shown on the pages that follow.

These images represent a realistic vision of the model. On the left, a close up on the model is shown as being a habitable place. On the right, an outdoor place was chosen to show the exterior of the project in location.
