New England Lobster Roll - Classic Recipe
Prepare Time: 5 Minutes Serves: 4 Ingredients 1 pound of Maine lobster meat (if canned, drain) 1/2 cup of diced celery (finely diced) 1/2 lemon juiced 3/4 cup mayonnaise 1/2 teaspoon of white or black pepper 1/8 teaspoon of sea salt 4 hot dog rolls, toasted
Directions If using fresh shelled lobster meat, chop the meat into 1/4 inch chunks. Combine all ingredients, except hot dog rolls, until lightly mixed together. Divide into four equal parts and put the lobster salad into each of the hot dog rolls. Serve with pickles and potato chips or french fries. Enjoy! Notes: I always recommend you boil your own lobsters if they are available in your area.
History Of The New England Lobster Roll Nobody is exactly certain, but it has been said that while the wealthy women of the 1800's enjoyed lobster at their lavish dinner parties, they didn't like them ripped apart at or near the table. So, the chefs for these families started preparing the tasty chunks of lobster meat into easily consumed salads.
This delectable lobster salad had to wait patiently, for several decades, to be joined with its culinary counterpart, the toasted hot dog roll. The union of the salad and roll happened sometime after 1910, which was coincidental when the first soft hamburger and hot dog rolls were manufactured commercially. The tasty lobster salad roll could now be eaten with only one hand! Soon after, these amazing sandwiches were being eaten all over the New England coast.
