04 NIGHTS / 03 DAYS AT KAYALORAM
Gliding over the emerald face of the Vembanad Lake, we take in our surroundings. It is dawn, a gentle breeze blows across the bow of our boat. Vividly coloured butterflies flutter in the air and birds wait patiently on reeds sticking out of the water, to swoop down on fish. Through the morning haze we spot The Kayalaoram Resort, our abode for the next couple of days. A reception party of pretty women in traditional sarees and sarong clad musicians greets us. We bid our genial boatman goodbye.

TRAVELLER Mr. Jaganathan
Classified a heritage property by the Government of India, the Kayaloram Lake Resort is one of Kerala’s architectural marvels and yet offers all the luxuries of a modern getaway resort. Our room with a spectacular view of the Vembanad, is built in the traditional Kerala style of architecture with a profusion of wood everywhere and furnished in discreet elegance. Pleasantly surprised at the amenities, we refreshed ourselves and then set out to begin our day. The service is immediate yet unobtrusive, pleasant without being cloying. After a hearty traditional Kerala breakfast accompanied by the raucous birds in the trees in the garden we studied our itinerary for the day.

One of them is the guided village tour to meet the homely women-folk who will be more than pleased to cook a delicious Kerala meal for the guests and impart a handful of tips in cooking the local dishes. Cycling, Shikara rides, houseboat cruise, fishing and bird-watching are some of the activities that are perfectly suited for the natural landscapes of the place.

BACKWATERS OF KERALA
Many unique species of aquatic life including Crabs, Frogs and Mudskippers, water birds such as Terns, Kingfishers, Darters and Cormorants, and animals such as Otters and Turtles live in and alongside the backwaters. Palm trees, Pandanus shrubs, various leafy plants and bushes grow alongside the backwaters. Waterways run alongside extensive paddy fields and fields of Cassava, Banana and Yam and form an economical means of transport. For centuries a substantial local trade has flourished on the backwaters by inland navigation, transportation, fishing, fish curing and agriculture. Boat making has been a traditional craft, so has been the coir industry. The area is similar to the dikes of the Netherlands where land has been reclaimed from the sea and crops are grown and many of the fields are below sea level and are surrounded by earthen embankments.
Kerala’s backwaters are a network of interconnected canals, rivers, lakes and inlets, a labyrinthine system formed by more than 900 km of waterways, and sometimes compared to the American Bayou. In the midst of this landscape there are a number of towns and cities that serve as the starting and end points of backwater cruises. Formed by the action of waves and shore currents creating low barrier islands across the mouths of the many rivers flowing down from the Western Ghats range, the network includes five large lakes linked by canals, both manmade and natural, fed by 38 rivers, and extending virtually half the length of Kerala state. The backwaters are a unique ecosystem where at the mouth of estuaries, freshwater from the rivers meets the seawater from the Arabian Sea. In certain areas, such as the Vembanad lake a barrage has been built to prevent salt water from the sea prevented from entering inland, keeping the fresh water intact to be extensively used for irrigation purposes.
