PORTFOLIO

MIRZA ISMAIL

GREETINGS Mirza Zuhairi Bin Ismail here. I am a dynamic and passionate Part 1 Architecture graduate from The University of Edinburgh with interests in architecture and interior design. This portfolio will showcase my design skills with experience and interest that I have developed in design and spatial planning as I am exploring design possibilities through real-time rendering with Sketchup, Enscape and AutoCAD for quick decision making and better transparency in my design workflow. Exploration is always a parti in our design process and I welcomed to work together as a team and contribute successfully in shaping designs that are functional and livable for the future. Along with the opportunity, I am progressively staking knowledge in my career development and being adaptable to fast-paced architectural environments.

REX NIRVANA PARLOUR PROJECT INFO Rex Nirvana is a restoration project of the existing Rex Cinema repurposed into a funeral parlour. The building consists of a main foyer hall, 5 funeral parlours with different sizes, offices and a gallery. The idea for the repurposed was to always maintain the art deco profile of the building and re-elaborate the elements as people walk into the building. The interior encapsulated the relationship with its exterior by creating a narrative of a pathway for the visitor to experience the nirvanic state as they reach the main room that locates their relatives’ funeral ceremony.

GRANTON STARTUP CITY The current city of Edinburgh is a lovely place fill with world renowned architectural heritage and urban landscape that defines the unique townscape as a whole. But for tech and creative industry that are growing exponentially in the city, the city does lack in availability of a Grade A office spaces for tech companies to grow and upscale. The design proposal for a startup city in Granton seek to offer both versatile office spaces for the tech entrepreneurs and also flexible units for living that promote neighbourhoods of the future. The proposal aim to reinvigorate Granton into a new destination for employment and collaborating opportunities with potential of becoming one of thriving creative/commercial technology hub.

GRANTON: AN OVERVIEW

Granton remain as one of the highly deprive area within the city of Edinburgh with the near absence of public amenities and leisure activities. The existing diversity of activities and employment industry can become an advantage to create new experience and innovation for the growing tech sector in the city. With the lacking in creative and commercial activities on the site, a proposal for a mixed use complex can greatly benefit by Granton population thus bring new spatial synergy that can reinvigorate the site.

Cellularisation is a concept to create various different-sized workspaces that can be reconfigured that can offer flexibility to change into different mode of working environnment.

Symbiotic working environment provide areas that blends with circulation that can be used for quick meetings and instant collaboration.

Flexible and Agile workspaces with furnitures that offer different mode of working environment.

Changeable and Adaptable modular office shells. Depending on target users. shells can be changed to accomodate the size of the startup team. 39

A ROOFTOP COMMUNITY On the rooftop, the building offers two different variations of living consist of: Terraced Units and Co-Housing Units. The rooftop becomes the new ‘ground floor’ for the community offering interconnected spaces for residents and office dwellers to socialise, work and enjoying leasure activities on and around the open spaces. The deck-access is a heavily contested circulation type but with potential as a social space acting as collective balcony for the residents.

STRUCTURAL COMPOSITION

In order to provide a larger and flexible internal workspace, the building utilitse steel frame structure supported with diagrid system that can provide structural stability for long spans office spaces. The structural diagrid also reflect Granton’s identity with modern industrial aesthetic thus gives a distinctive and dynamic identity to the building. 46

WORK PLACEMENT During my work placement in GDP Architects, I managed to get involved and assisted the architects with several ongoing development projects within the firm. The exposure that I had experienced helped me to develop necessary architectural design and interpersonal skills needed to further improve and succeed in architectural field. In addition, I was able to expand my knowledge in regards to the professional practices and procedures of every stages of project development and delivery.

PAM-GAMUDA IBS HOUSING 4.0 COMPETITION

In the earliest phase of the competition, I had experienced first hand on how the team coordinated during discussion and brainstormed each of our thoughts in addressing the issues raised from the competition’s brief. From the discussion,I was able to illustrate our ideas and typological study into 3D diagrams and prepared sectional drawings that showcased the life of the dwellers. Our design ideas sought to adress the arising issue regarding the mismatch between the demand and supply of housing in country, subsequently proposing to raise the societal aspirations among dwellers and improving the quality of living for the future. Design intentions was followed with the adoption of prefabricated construction that can reduce the cost and overall speed of project delivery.

SURAU WITHIN A MEDICAL RENOVATION PROJECT IN JALAN TAR

This is a project where I was giving a chance to explore design iterations and selection of materials for the best suitable products that could give the best solution for the project in regards to design briefs and cost of the project. I was given the chance to follow closely with the architects during meetings with consultants. We underwent a series of design iteration to find the best products that can meet with the design intentions and consider very closely with its buildability after the meeting with the engineers. I was able to produce a short design presentation for the meeting and recalibrated the dimensions of the materials afterwards.

PHOTOGRAPHER’s PLAYGROUND The title encapsulates our perpectives of cinematic space exploration on spatial transition from a filmic analysis of The Passengers film scene. Taking Chalmers Close as a site context to overlay our contextual exploration from the film scene, we explore the viewpoints through the lens of a photographer as a tool to investigate cinematic aspects of spatial transitions that fascinates the mind and conducive environment for a live-work atelier of a photographer and his/her visitors.

SAVELLO LIBRARY The idea for the Monte Savello Public Library is to provide archive and reference information about the history of Rome, offering visitors with wide range of books of architectural history, literature, engineering and cultural information. Design for the library has been taken into account for its hisotirc location in the centre of Rome with the library serve as a “living room of the city” that provide spaces and medium for community engagement.

Concrete Ribs acting as the primary structure for the library similar to the idea of Roman collonade that can be found throughout the city. THe expressive ribs combine structure and functionality into a dynamic identity for the library.
