MIRZOYAN My Roads: Armenia-Turkey Border (2006-2009)

“Series called “My Roads”, are photos shot from a car or a train during my travels across Armenia’s western borders. I have combined my desire of shooting with long exposures with my interest in Armenia’s efforts towards reconciliation and normalisation of relations with its western neighbour. This is a very persona visual project. Roads usually have beginnings and ends but I have created circular movements with the roads that I shoot, spaces that constantly rotate and come to no conclusion, reflecting on the arduous efforts to normalise relations between two peoples and why and when they should finally open their common border. My roads. They exist because they embrace my work, my plans, my photography and my stories. If there is a story there will always be a road – a road to and a road back. Roads exist, because I have to reach the site of an important shooting – a destination. They exist only because of some other object and for some other purpose I have to reach out to. Roads are minor intervals, which can be removed, abridged or blotted out; which do not call for a reflection or a description; which you neither remember, nor are you reminded of. An empty space, and all that this interval contains is equally empty and secondary. All that world, and fuss, and people within, and nature, and time come to life only because I’m going there to write my story, to create my most important photography. Years ago I decided to capture that empty interval. I wanted to try to direct the energy of my photography to all that exists amidst the things I know. I wanted to capture the interval that is not directly linked to me - that secondary world. People whom I might see for a split second, but who would stay in my memory forever for a simple reason that I will never see or find them again.”
