WINTER 2019 GlenArborArt.org
FROM OUR NEW EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Sarah Kime This January, I completed my first official month as Executive Director of Glen Arbor Arts Center. It’s truly an honor and a privilege to serve the GAAC and the community in this capacity. Thanks to the staff, the Board of Directors, the volunteers and the community for the very warm welcome I’ve received. I am so excited to be part of an organization that has been providing creative experiences for 33 years in the region! The Glen Arbor Arts Center is so much more than a place. We are a resource for artists looking to hone skills, an inspiration for those who want to learn more, therapy for those who need to work through life’s challenges, or a fun musical way to spend an afternoon. It’s in these moments that I feel our mission in action.
Join GAAC… All the new developments and programming taking place at the GAAC are very exciting. Please join or renew your membership for 2019 now to take advantage of a full year of membership. Benefits are listed online. Use the enclosed envelope or join/renew at GlenArborArt.org

At GAAC, we create opportunities through our mission to enhance our community through the Arts. While you may come into the building for a specific reason — the exhibits, an event, or art class — we hope, and expect, that you will be connected to something larger than yourself. Research shows that access to creative experiences improves mental and physical health. They makes us happier and healthier. We hope the programs and activities described in the 2019 Winter Newsletter bring newcomers to the arts — as well as long-time members who want to try something new! This year we are proud to offer the chance to paint with renowned watercolorist Joyce Hicks, to refresh your pottery skills at Thoreson Farm, and to dance to the the beat of live music during the Manitou Music series. Learn about Picasso in Paris, Matisse in Nice when our favorite art educator Linda Young offers another of her lively art history talks — this one followed by a French cuisine-inspired luncheon at La Becasse. And, reduce your children’s screen time by enrolling them in our new Summer Art Camp. The Glen Arbor Arts Center offers something for everyone. Come see for yourself and be inspired! We are looking forward to continuing to present meaningful and impactful opportunities for the Glen Lake and surrounding communities. I hope you will join us and let 2019 be your year of creativity! Sarah Kime
PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Honoring our Past. Anticipating our Future The Glen Arbor Arts Center’s story is about the “few.” About people who envisioned the work of area artists being celebrated and promoted, for all to enjoy: Suzanne Wilson, Ananda & Ben Bricker, Midge Obata, Becky Thatcher, Barbara & Frank Siepker and others. And there have been many ‘others’ who have contributed to the organization and its growth: board members, board presidents and countless committee chairs and volunteers. We would now like to add to this list in celebration the work of Peg McCarty, chosen by the founders/early board members as our first Director of the then Glen Arbor Art Association. Peg has chosen to retire from the organization after 15 years. The credibility and character of what we now call the Glen Arbor Arts Center rest upon all of these many individuals, and especially Peg. Peg contributed significantly in her love of the organization and in celebration of all that we have come to admire about the GAAC: the arts, the artist, the work and the enjoyment, the volunteers and the community. Thank you founders, thank you volunteers and now especially we thank Peg! A job well done. It is with great excitement—and a big sigh after the lengthy search process—that we welcome Sarah Kime to the GAAC as our first Executive Director. Sarah comes to us with a great deal of experience with both fund development and nonprofits. As a bonus, Sarah also comes with a love of pottery, and the gift of a creative planning- and problemsolving mind. This is Sarah’s first time in the role of executive director. She’ll pull on all her past experiences and gifts to lead the GAAC forward. Sarah: We, the board, staff, GAAC members, the community welcome you with open arms, and look forward to working with and through you as together we move forward in this, the journey and exploration of what the GAAC is yet to become. Artist/Creativity! Product/Process! At GAAC it ‘all’ comes together!
The Glen Arbor Arts Center. An organization dedicated to enriching community life through the arts. As GAAC moves into the new year, the single most important priority we have is to explore more fully is what we mean by enriching community life through the arts. What will this look like in 5 years, in 10 years, and in 20 years? What does
GLEN ARBOR ARTS CENTER • Winter 2019
the creative community desire of the GAAC? And, what does the community at-large—people who want to explore, perhaps reconnect with their innate creativity — desire of the GAAC? We are committed to providing enrichment for professional and emerging artists. We do this in many ways: n
Adult classes and children’s classes
n
Artist-in-Residence program, (brought to life in the 1990s by Suzanne Wilson, a GAAC founder)
n
Plein Air Weekend
n
And now, through the gallery and the exhibitions
Through conversation, programs and events, we will be looking to engage with artists, gallery owners and others to see how we can enrich the “artist community” experience. Likewise, and with equal energy and commitment, we want to engage the larger community to see how we can provide enrichment through the process of creativity, both product and process. Through learning and exploring. What does this all look like? And what, additionally, can we provide that fulfills this mission of the GAAC? The Glen Arbor Arts Center is an exciting organization. Many people have made this a fact, and accomplished so much since the GAAC’s founding in 1983. We look forward to the new year and the years ahead of us. Thank you to each and all for your commitment, for what you have provided, and what you will provide. In one sense we are 35 years old. In another sense it is a brand new day for the GAAC -- a new day to continue to explore and learn, to enjoy all the beauty and joy that surrounds us here in this most wonderful place we call Glen Arbor. The Glen Arbor Arts Center, and all the people who give this institution life, are here to help in small ways and maybe even in big ways, for your chance to explore, to learn, to share and to enjoy. Thank you for the opportunity in allowing me as president to work with such a wonderful team of board members, with staff, with members and community. It is a gift that gives every day. With appreciation and thanks! Jeff Gietzen

2019 GAAC EXHIBITIONS The Glen Arbor Arts Center offers year-round exhibitions in its gallery — but the exhibitions don’t begin and end when the pictures are hung on the wall. That’s only the start. Each exhibition is enhanced by a series of companion programs: artist interviews, art history talks, theater performances, music, and poetry offer diverse, dynamic opportunities to dig deeper into an exhibition’s theme, and explore it from many unexpected angles. More than just a gallery, its exhibitions and programs are a space and a place for exploring the world of creativity.
WINTER January 11 - February 28, 2019 A celebration of the season! This is a juried exhibition.
WOOD, WOODS, WOODEN March 8 – April 11, 2019 Wood is a building material. The woods are where trees grow. Wooden is an attitude, a frame of mind. Exhibitors carve into wood – the material, the place and the state – to reveal new layers of understanding, inquiry, and thinking.

GAAC Lobby Gallery The GAAC’s Lobby Gallery is a small space — right there as one passes through the main entrance into the building. Lobby Gallery exhibits change on a quarterly basis. They offer a glimpse into the creativity, and process of a single artist, as well as a congenial introduction to an artist’s work, both past and present. Lobby Gallery may be small, but that’s no impediment. Sometimes less is more, and is exactly the right size for interesting ideas to be considered. On display through April 3:
ANGELA SAXON Nocturnes: Night Slips in Around the Edges Leelanau County artist Angela Saxon explores the transition from evening to night in a series of circular paintings.

ART HISTORY TALKS PICASSO IN PARIS, MATISSE IN NICE Wednesday, May 22, 10:30 am An art talk about the creative genius of Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. Art educator Linda Young connects the dots in her lively talks, and will put the work of these two titans into context of their time. Young, a Glen Arbor resident, was the Director of Museum Education at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts for 20 years. The approach to painting taken by Picasso and Matisse dominated the first 50 years of 20th Century art: one with shape and the other with color. Picasso revolted against realism by breaking up forms and inventing Cubism – then continued to challenge traditional views about art with unorthodox approaches art for over 60 years. Matisse shocked world in 1905 with unconventional portraits of his wife. Vibrant, arbitrary colors defined his style, and made him the leading artist for the Fauves, a group of artists who felt color should express emotion, not just imitate nature. In many respects polar opposites, and at times rivals, Picasso and Matisse’s artistic approaches had a common theme: that art should not represent, but reconstruct, reality.
Art History Talks take place in the GAAC gallery. You’re welcome to bring a brown bag lunch.
GERMAN EXPRESSIONISM Wednesday, October 23, noon Art educator Linda Young leads a lively discussion of this historic period and the visual artist who populated it. Young, a Glen Arbor resident, was the Director of Museum Education at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts for 20 years. From 1905-30 a group of German artists insisted art should express the artists’ feelings rather than images of the real world. Artists such as Kathe Kollwitz, Ernst Kirschner, and Emil Nolde used distorted images, exaggerated forms, and color for emotional impact while exploring themes of social protest, societal ills and government corruption in the years before and after World War I. The work of the German Expressionists would be deemed “degenerate” with the rise of Nazism and much was destroyed, sold to finance Hitler’s war machine, or lost during World War II. What remains is a powerful testament, to the strength and endurance of the artistic spirit. Tickets: $10/members; $15/nonmembers. To reserve tickets:GlenArborArt.org or 231/334-6112
A French cuisine inspired luncheon at LaBecasse follows the lecture. The luncheon is limited to 50, reservations are required. Tickets: Lecture + Luncheon $42/members, $50 nonmembers. Lecture only $10/members; $15 nonmembers. To reserve tickets:GlenArborArt.org or 231/334-6112

GAAC MANITOU MUSIC POSTER COMPETITION WINNER Thomas Winebrenner Winebrenner’s view of Lake Michigan’s Platte Bay has been selected as the iconic image of the Glen Arbor Arts Center’s 2019 GAAC Manitou Music poster. “Platte Bay Trail” was conceived in late summer 2016 during an evening hike. It is painted in oil on canvas. Although Thomas’s home base is in southeastern Michigan, his heart remains in Leelanau. He still visits a family cabin located near Empire that his parent purchased in 1962. “My wife and I have travelled the globe and the cabin is still my favorite place on earth,” he said. “When I’m not at the cabin I wish I was, and when it is closed for the winter I can’t wait for spring.”
Poster will be available in the spring, $18/each. For more information visit GlenArborArt.org.
