St. Clement Church is located in the Old Town, near the Lower Gate (Dolna Porta), and not very far from Ohrid`s main City Square. Hidden among houses, with its modest proportions it seems invisible and only well-oriented travelers would be able to detect it. This is the only among all Ohrid churches that was dedicated to St. Clement of Ohrid (840?-916 AD) since the day it was built. According to a legend, when St. Panteleimon Church was converted into a mosque, the relics of St. Clement were kept first in this church, and later in the church of Virgin Mary Perivleptos, where were held until 2002. However, when the relics were moved to Virgin Mary Perivleptos Church, this one was also named for St. Clement. In order to avoid any possible confusion, the original St. Clement Church was unofficially renamed into “St. Clement the Lesser Church” and “the Old St. Clement Church“. There is no place for doubt about the time of occurrence of this church. There is an inscription on the inside wall of the church, above the entrance, saying that it was erected in 1378 by the Rev. Stephen, at the time when Ohrid was ruled by duke Andrew Gropa. In the same year the church was frescoed by unknown painters. The frescoes are preserved only in the lower parts of the eastern and southern walls, and in the apse. In the opinion of prominent historians of art, the painting in this church is in line with the traditions of Ohrid painting. In 1694 Cosmas of Kythia made a list of all Ohrid`s churches, and there is no mention of this church. Probably at that time it was abandoned and in ruins. In recent times the church was restored several times. According to its architecture, it ranks among the churches with one nave basis in the form of a rectangle that to the east ends with three-sided apse. The ceiling is made in the form of a semicircular arch. Due to frequent landslides, the western entrance was closed, and then in function remained the only southern entrance.
