Munich without a car Munich's public transportation system (MVV) is excellent, and an attractive alternative to the car for sightseeing. The MVV network is constantly expanding, and the S-Bahn (suburban train), U-Bahn (underground train), tram and bus will take you to your destination quickly and reliably.
Purchase of MVV tickets Single tickets, strip cards and 1-day tickets can be purchased at any of the ticket machines situated in the S-Bahn and U-Bahn stations. Please note: the machines at the tram and bus stops sell only single and 1-day tickets. Tickets can be purchased at many other locations, including newsstands.
CityTourCard The custom-made ticket for visitors to the Bavarian capital! • Ticket available for all public transportation within Munich (MVV Innenraum, i.e., inner city area) • Discount coupons for more than 30 tourist attractions. www.citytourcard.com
We recommend: the 1-day ticket For a stay of only a day or two, the best choice is a 1-day ticket valid for the whole inner city. The ticket costs 5 Euro for an adult and 2.40 Euro for a child. The partner 1-day ticket costs 9 Euro per day and can be used not only by couples, but also by groups of up to five people, whereby two children (aged 6 to 14 years) count as one adult.
MVV nightlines: our special weekend service In the late hours from Friday to Saturday and Saturday to Sunday, the MVV offers night owls a special treat: the U-Bahn trains run until around 2am, and the bus and tram “night lines” operate in half-hour shifts all night long. The S-Bahn trains (S1-8) link the town center to almost all line terminals until shortly after 2am.
Arrival by train www.db.de
Green belt recreation areas such as the Starnberger See (1-day ticket München XXL) and the Ammersee (1-day ticket Gesamtnetz) are also easy to reach by S-Bahn. For a longer stay and only occasional rides with public transportation, the Streifenkarte (strip card, 10 strips for 11 Euro) is the best buy.
Give us a call For information about timetables, call our voice-controlled 24-hour service at 089-41424344. For specific questions, you can reach us at the same number Mon-Fri, 7am-5pm.

Highlights include the tympanum figures from the Aphaia temple in Aegina, which were created around 500 B.C., the statue of the Barberini faun and the portraits of historical figures. The building facing the Glyptothek houses one of the world’s most important collections of Greek, Etruscan and Roman craftwork: vases, bronze and terracotta figures, jewelry and glass. Over 800 European masterpieces retrace the history of painting from the Middle Ages to the end of the Rococo period. The Venetian school is represented by master painter Titian, and Dutch Baroque by Frans Hals. Rubens (with one of the world’s largest collections of his works) occupies the center of the museum. Other highlights are the paintings by Old German masters Altdorfer and Dürer, including the latter’s striking self-portrait from 1500 and his Four Apostles (1526). The building itself was designed by Leo von Klenze and completed in 1836: it is considered an architectural masterpiece, and has been a model for other museums, from Rome to Saint Petersburg. The latter exhibition includes the private collection of Ludwig I, who financed the construction of the New Pinakothek by private means. Romantic sentimentalism is highlighted in works by Caspar David Friedrich, while society painters like Wilhelm von Kaulbach and Carl von Piloty express the newly awakened interest in German history. The New Pinakothek also hosts works by celebrated portraitists and landscape artists from England, Spain and France such as Thomas Gainsborough, Francisco Goya and Jacques Louis David.
The paintings of French Impressionists include masterpieces by Monet, Manet, Degas, Pissaro and Renoir. Cézanne, Gauguin and van Gogh represent the pioneers of modern art. Fine sculptures of the same period complete the collection. Due to refurbishment work in 2009 and 2010, some rooms may be temporarily closed. The museum remains open. Staatliche Münzsammlung The State Coin Collection is one of Europe’s oldest and largest collections of coins, medals, bank notes, bonds and cut stones. Established by Duke Albrecht V (15501574), the State Coin Collection was continuously expanded by the Wittelsbach dynasty. The two most important extensions were the merging of the Munich and the Palatine collections under Elector Karl Theodor (1777-1799) and the fabulous acquisitions by King Ludwig I (1825-1848). The collection contains over 300,000 specimens and is one of the largest coin collections in the world. With its library comprising over 20,000 volumes, the museum is a center for international research in the fields of numismatics, the history of economics as well as the history of the world, from Antiquity to today. Exhibition Halls and Art Galleries Haus der Kunst family With some 6 exhibitions per year, numerous prestigious events and an extensive program for children and adolescents, the Haus der Kunst is one of the leading international museums. The program mixes various genres: painting, photography, film, architecture and design, with special focus on contemporary art. The particular challenge lies in the building’s history. Inaugurated in 1937, the museum was to showcase the “German art at the time.” until 1944: these were considered the most important displays of German art. Having been “architecturally de-nazified” after the Second World War, the building has recently undergone considerable reconstruction at the initiative of the Belgian Chris Dercon, director of the Haus der Kunst since 2003, so that visitors can now gain a critical view of the original setting.

Residenz München (Residenz Museum) family The Residenz is one of the largest museums of interior design in Europe. For five hundred years, the building in the heart of the Old Town was the home and the center of power of the Bavarian dukes, electors and kings. It also symbolizes the rulers’ appreciation of art and passion for building. The rooms of Maximilian I – the Kaisersaal (Imperial Hall), Steinzimmer (Stone Room) and Reiche Kapelle (Rich Chapel) – are fine examples of 17th century palace architecture. The Ahnengalerie (Ancestors’ Gallery) and the Reiche Zimmer (Rich Rooms) designed by François Cuvilliés are done in the early Rococo style. The classical apartments in the royal building are based on plans by Leo von Klenze. The highlight is the Antiquarium: the largest and finest Renaissance hall

The 130 rooms of the Residenz are filled with furniture and paintings, tapestries and porcelain by the best artists of the time. The rococo gem is Munich’s oldest opera house – and probably the city’s most beautiful theater. Commissioned by Elector Max Joseph III, it was built between 1751 and 1755. The architect was the brilliant Francois Cuvilliés: the “Old Residence Theater” was later renamed in his honor. Music history was written here, for example with the premiere of Mozart’s “Idomeneo”. x Schloss and Park Nymphenburg with the Marstallmuseum, PorzellanSammlung, palace park and pavilions family The Baroque palace in the west part of Munich was built as a summer residence for the Bavarian princes. The wings and annex buildings give the vast ensemble its harmonious appearance, and house several important collections. For example, the legendary Gallery of Beauties commissioned by Ludwig I adorns the South wing. Also open to the public are the birth chamber of Ludwig II and the Steinerner Saal (Hall of Stone), a spacious ballroom with ceiling frescoes by Johann Baptist Zimmermann. The Marstall Museum in the former stables contains the coronation coach of Karl VII and Ludwig II’s splendid gilded state coach. In the floor above, the Bäuml collection illustrates the skill and artistry of the Nymphenburg porcelain manufacture. The spacious park – a paradise for strollers – charms visitors with its canals and pavilions: the Amalienburg, a delicate Rococo palace, the Badenburg, a bathing hall with the first heated pool, the exotic Pagodenburg and the Magdalenenklause, a folly built as courtly hermitage.
