Celebrities Flaunt Givenchy’s Riccardo Tisci Profligate ‘Punk’ Fashions at the 2013 Met Gala By: Mariah Honey It was obvious that the Met Gala 2013 belonged to Riccardo Tisci, the extremely talented Italian designer who dressed not one but thirteen celebrities, including the likes of Madonna, Amanda Seyfried, and power couple Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, for the most popular red carpet event within the world of fashion. Riccardo Tisci is an Italian fashion designer. He graduated from London’s Central Saint Martins Academy in 1999, and in 2005 was named Creative Director for Givenchy womenswear and haute couture, a job he almost passed on. In May 2008, he was also named as menswear and accessories designer of the Givenchy men’s division. The 38-year-old’s extravagant designs for the event included

an ivory hand-embroidered tulle dress with a plunging neckline worn by the American film and television actress Rooney Mara. International Superstar and curvy diva Beyoncé turned up fashionably late at the gala in a stunning Tisci piece, featuring a python corset and long skirt with a scorching orange decoration and cutout train. The Met Gala, also known as Costume Institute Ball, is hosted annually by the internationally famous fashion magazine Vogue. It is a coveted event attended by only the most desired A-Listers, often including Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of Vogue Magazine. She oversees the benefit committee as well as the actual guest list. She actually has to personally approve many of the selected

gowns before they even appear on the carpet. The extreme soiree celebrates the annual opening of the Metropolitan Museum’s fashion exhibit at the Costume Institute. It is regarded as an important social event in New York City. The event has been an annual affair at the Met since 1971. In 2005 individual tickets ranged in price from $5,000 to $15,000, while corporate sponsors paid $150,000 for whole tables. In 2006, the event raised a total of $4.5 million. In 2010, the price of the top table was $250,000. Vogue and Fashion House Chanel have shared the cost of the event. Each year the event has a theme, and the evening includes a cocktail

hour and a formal dinner. This year’s theme, PUNK: Chaos To Couture, focused around the fashions of the Punk Era. Tisci was honored at this year’s Met Gala and displayed his extraordinary fashion designs by 13 celebrities that wore his designs on the red carpet. “It was an amazing moment, but I was really stressed about this in the beginning”, Riccardo Tisci said the night after the Met Ball. Not only was he co-chair at Monday night’s event, but the Givenchy designer dressed no less than 13 guests. It’s no surprise he was nervous. Let’s take a closer look at some of his designs that were seen blustering down the red carpet. As for Beyoncé, the superstar singer stunned in a strapless black bodice that gave way to a cascading skirt covered in a swirling gold and bronze print - oh, and with matching boots. So how did the striking look come about? Beyoncé said, “I want to look really good like last year, but I want to look different”, Tisci said. She was like a rock girl with the flame, the boots, the gloves, the corset, the animal. She was a sexy goddess. The designer’s fellow co-chair and most recent muse, Rooney Mara, was swathed in an ivory tulle gown. “She is superintelligent, superelegant, supercool”, says Tisci. For last night, I said, “Rooney, we should really push more to be sexy, because you have the

face and the body to be sexy”, and she said, “You know what, we should go for it”. For me, the punk moment was the cleavage—a very big, open V-neck dress. She was very punk in her own way. To be fair, Rooney Mara had a bit of a head start, with playing punk hacker Lisbeth Salander in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. However, she still deserved major props for this pairing of a blackened-plum lip with a lacquered, sculptural updo. Kim Kardashian also got the Givenchy treatment but her blossom gown featuring a high-neck and builtin gloves divided opinion. In fact, the ensemble has since been compared to a frumpy floral sofa. Yikes. So what was Tisci’s verdict? “I wanted to have a moment of family…Kim, Kanye and the baby”, he says. Kim said, “Ricky, I love what you’re doing so much, I am in your hands’’. Tisci followed with, “we should give her our punk moment with a romantic beautiful flower-printed dress”. “I have dressed many pregnant women in the past”, he continues. “People can say what they want. To me, pregnancy is the most beautiful thing in the world, and when you celebrate something, you give people flowers. I think she looked amazing. She was the most beautiful pregnant woman I dressed in my career”. The evening before the Gala, the pair dined with Met Gala co-host Anna Wintour at her private residence.

Amanda Seyfried was a gorgeous gal on the red carpet at the 2013 Met Gala. The 27-year-old Les Miserables actress hit the carpet in a Givenchy dress and shoes with Fred Leighton jewelry. Amanda was just recently named the new face of Givenchy’s Very Irresistible Givenchy campaign. Florence Welch shows off her fringe on the red carpet at the Met Gala. The 26-year-old Florence and the Machine entertainer spoke about her fear of red carpets. “Anna [Wintour] just ran through [the red carpet of the Great Gatsby premiere]. She did it really well. I get very, very stiff and very worried. I think, “Don’t look scared,” Florence told USA Today. Madonna caused a stir wearing a studded jacket teamed with shredded fishnets. “Madonna and I did the red carpet together. We did interviews together. We collaborated”, Tisci told WWD. “With women and men, I like to sit down and talk about what we want to do. I don’t like to be lazy and just take a dress and say, “This dress is nice, I am sure Madonna would wear it”, “I am very honest with them. I am not just dressing them to send clothes but to celebrate their beauty and talent.” ✻

Accessorize and Surprise! Summer 2013 By: Angela Soberanes As spring and summer fashion shows come to an end and runway trends hit stores, top designers bring out their summer fashion accessories for all to follow with help from The G.O.O.D.S Magazine. Outside, flowers are blooming in San Diego and the hot summer sun is heating up the scene, which means it’s time to shop for this season’s most tasteful totes and must-have shoes and jewelry pieces. Your accessories should tell a story of their own, express your individualism and compliment an outfit. This spring is all about statement neckpieces and cuffs, not-so-high heels and some chunky heels, as well as fun and flirty handbags.

Accessories A’la Mode Top designers like Dolce and Gabbana chose decorative earrings with tassels and gold coins influenced by the ethnic cultures of the world. Basket woven bracelets and gold knuckle rings adorned every finger on Balenciaga models on the runway, so do not be shy to show off more than one while you are texting to draw attention to your hands. Dannijo showcased antique silver with decorative jade and colored stones for a vintage yet sophisticated accent piece. Another top brand to look for is The2Bandits, whose 2013 summer accessory lookbook has everything you need to make a subtle yet distinct impression. A used antique gold and brass in their open cuffs brings out a rustic but refined look to any casual outfit and the neck-ties in the line can make any plain white tee look hip. Ear cuffs are a new decorative piece that everyone should try. Fun floral pieces have been seen on celebrities on the red carpet this award season. Shoes, Sandals, etc. Now that the cold weather is taking its’ leave, spring blossoms with strappy sandals, wild wedges, and chunky heels. On the runway this season, however, many designers like LV have shortened their shoe giving women a rest. Thank You! Fun flats and short-but-chic heels have stepped into this years spring line, kicking six-inch heels to the curb. Marni offers a perfect array of all that is sandals and wedges to model by when shopping. Being true to who you are is an important concept when shoe shopping, but you need to take a risk. Be eclectic and sexy when it comes to your shoes because they can make or break an entire outfit. Strappy sandals and leather woven gladiator sandals by Nine West’s Vintage America in Bolden are affordable for any price range and will look so sexy for a stroll down the beach. The new futuristic shape of heels, such as Givenchy’s black and transparent albertina podium heels, may look too hard to walk in, but you wont be sure until you try it. Bags Galore From handbags, to side purses and clutches, fashion designers have a standard structured bag that can come in many colors, even clear! Gucci has an adorable transparent clutch in different pastels with a plexiglass finish that is unique and glamorous. Match it with anything because it is clear, the new black. Marc Jacobs and Burberry have also gone see-thru in their new lines this summer. Color blocking has been a big hit with designers like Prada and Fendi who use different colors and geometric shapes. Louis Vuitton’s checkered bags have arrived in more colors for this season. Black and white is everywhere as well in angular shapes and cubes. Look for bags with dimension like Fendi and steer clear from frumpy loose hanging bags that will cramp your style. A well-designed Dior will be worth the splurge for it will hold up for this season and be a staple in your closet forever. Look for top handle bags that are outside the norm of the usual box shaped bags to add a different motif to your ensemble. Don’t be scared to try graphic bags that go with anything or patchwork snakeskin bags for a sssexy style at night. If your ensemble is casual-chic, a statement bag will certainly set it off. Bold colors and chains will give the right edge to your look for day and night.

Who’s Out and About Her bright red lips told no lies as her hand did the talking. Miley Cyrus, now all of 20, celebrated being on the Maxim’s Hot 100 list recently at a party in Hollywood. A sparkling ring was wrapped around the forth finger of her left hand. Add to that, she recently tweeted, “Makin a special announcement this weekend @billboard #tunein.” Our bet is that her finger already spilled the secret. At the Vogue and Mac Cosmetics dinner last week which was held at the still hip and happening Chateau Marmont on Sunset, Hailee Steinfeld, Liberty Ross, and Emma Roberts were joined by a crew of other celebs. All were there in honor of designer Prabal Gurung. Selena Gomez was in Miami modeling a teeny, striped bikini. She was spotted poolside in a large black hat and cover-up. The Spring Breakers star told Kiss 108’s Matty in the Morning that she wants to begin dating again. Guess she got tired of the beebs and is ready for a new man...boy... uh, man.

Upcoming Trends Prints, prints, and more prints are making a bold statement this summer. Patchwork digital prints, mis-matching prints, animal prints, or everything all at once. Say it loud and say it proud! Any color, any pattern you choose. Jennifer Hudson recently stepped out in prints in two separate patterns. The skirt was in blue polka dots, and the top was in a leopard print. Kelly Osbourne recently showed off an abstract print dress on her show, Fashion Police. Take a risk and mix colors! Don’t worry, you’ll pull it off. You’re young and can get away with anything so go for it in a big, bold way!

What’s In, What’s Out The pretty pastels, soft florals, nudes, feminine pinks and girly look were nice but, this coming summer is not for sissies. In fact the one word we would use to describe what this summer’s look is; BOLD. Loud prints, bright metallics, red, red lipstick, blatant blues, golds and rust colors for the eyes as well as the lips and cheeks are the way to make a statement this summer. And the statement is HERE I AM. As you don your loud prints, put on some hot red lipstick and step out in a way so that you won’t be ignored. This is the summer for fun so do it BIG.

At the Bates Motel screening in Beverly Hills, Nicola Peltz (in a Versace dress and shoes by Prada), Freddie Highmore and Vera Farmiga were doing their promotion thing. The stars of the show also attended an A&E Event in New York to promote the series. Better catch it fast as there are only a few episodes of this season left.

They have classic, contemporary, and anything that says British in fashion and style. Demi Lovato also makes frequent appearances to pick up her faves in the British look. “Topshop Topman” is my personal favorite brand since I was like 15 or 16 years old.” They are relatively new to the states as Topshop Topman has only four stores open in America. The Pi Beta Phi Surf Classic By Jessica Krantz “Forty-two percent of children in the United States— more than 30 million—live in low-income households. Most of these children have no age-appropriate books at home, and the classrooms and programs they attend are under-resourced. Approximately two-thirds of these schools and programs cannot afford to buy books at retail prices.” So on Sunday, May 19th, The Goods Magazine was invited by the Pi Beta Phis from UC San Diego to help take over Pacific Beach, CA for their 10th Annual Pi Phi Surf Classic. The purpose of their event every year is to raise money to benefit the Pi Beta Phi’s national philanthropy, “First Book”. It is a daylong surfing event that features both professional and amateur surfers from around Southern California, Hawaii, Central America and even Australia. The Pi Beta Phi Surf Classic is one of the largest and most successful philanthropic events held in San Diego and is continually growing every year.

We at The G.O.O.D.S. Magazine believe that raising money for charity is the best profession in the world. We also know that it isn’t always the easiest job in the world. Nothing worthwhile is ever easy, but these young ladies certainly do make it appear that way. In the weeks leading up to the event The G.O.O.D.S. Magazine got to know some of them, and hear first-hand why they love throwing this event. Unanimously, they agreed that “the Surf Classic is just one of the many ways that they are able to continuously work within their communities to help promote

literacy and education for children and their families.” Pi Beta Phi was founded in 1867 and is considered the first national fraternity for women. With a clear commitment to service and a culture, Pi Beta Phi Fraternity is a values-based organization in which the individual’s development is a key component of the mission and vision of the organization. Pi Beta Phi attracts women who possess a desire to be a part of a dynamic organization that will promote growth in all areas of life. A dedication to core values is at the heart of the organization The founder of the Pi Beta Phi Surf Classic, Pete Cuffaro, and his co founder Ashley Bradberry met at a YMCA surf camp 10 years ago and decided to team up with their sorority sisters to produce this event. In 2009, the Pi Beta Phi Surf Classic won the Most Creative Fundraiser award on a national level and has raised over $100,000 dollars over the past 10 years. We think that’s pretty Goods!

READ THIS Hitomi Kanehara’s Snakes & Earrings

you can’t handle sadism and masochism, please avoid this book. It is explicit in its descriptions of sex and mutilation, so it certainly is not for everyone. Read it if these subject matters don’t bother you and you are interested in learning about a niche of subculture that has gained media attention in recent years. It’s quite short and should only take you a couple of hours to read tops. Snakes and Earrings is not a book for the tenderhearted, even though it does become tender every now and then. Actually this is a very harsh story, talking about a hard world, the world of Lui, Ama and Shibasan. It’s a story about a different way of life; a way of life that breaths and breeds in the darkness of the human soul, of life without hope.

It all begins when Lui, a kind of a ‘Barbie girl’ with as many earrings as one can get, meets Ama, a total freak who has even more piercings on his body than her. They hit it off right away and then before too long she moves in with him. What did she find so attractive about him? What else did you expect but his forked-tongue and his tattoos? She’s mystified by this creature and feels jealous. She needs a tongue just like his, but not only that, she also wishes to have engraved on her body the most original tattoo anyone ever made. It’s exactly because of her dark wishes that she finds her way, along with Ama into the workshop of Shiba-san, a real master in the arts of piercing and tattooing. As she walks through that door, the floodgates of hell seem to open wide and the oncoming waters are bound to rush her into the abyss. Lui is an extreme character. She likes falling down psychologically time and again; she is intent on diving in to the world of sin with no regrets, to torment her body without giving it a second thought. She seems to live in order to suffer, and it’s exactly this pain that keeps her alive. She may be an item with Ama but she doesn’t hesitate to sleep with Shiba-san; even after he says that he really wants to kill her. At the same time she feels almost ecstatic at the idea of her forked-tongue. Actually she’s so eager to get it that she places herself into a spot of insurmountable pain, almost

flirting with insanity. Ama, despite his looks, is quite a sensitive man and he really loves Lui. He hates watching her doing bad things to herself but doesn’t seem to have the power to stop her. He’d even kill for her, if she didn’t kill herself first that is. As for Shiba-san, well, he’s a man without a trace of humanity in him. He likes inflicting pain and that’s probably why he’s doing what he’s doing for a living. However, maybe, just maybe, he’s not completely lost, and a tragic event is all that it will take to bring some samples of goodness out of his dark heart and into the light. Snakes and Earrings is mainly a book of characters. The plot is not so important. The author doesn’t treat her creations with a gentle hand but with extreme harshness. She has a story to tell, and she’ll stop at nothing, in order to do so. The modern Japanese society comes under the microscope, goes through her fine filter and comes out at the other side just as bad as it could ever be. Sex, violence, drugs, alcohol, prostitution, fears; she talks about all these matters in a masterful way, in a raw language that could be hard to cope with, but which is the only one that could describe things as they really are. This is a hell of a novel, about the hell of some people’s everyday lives.

wedish Duo Club 8 dances on the thin line of mainstream Electronic Pop and experimental Indie Alt-Pop on their 8th Album Above The City. The album can be compared to a jigsaw puzzle in which there are lots of pieces scattered around and it takes time to find out how it all fits together. Some of the pieces fit together well…while some don’t quite create the right image. The pieces that seem to fit well together are the dreamy layers of synths on You Could Be Anybody and the 70s nostalgia of A Small Piece of Heaven. Not to mention, the outstanding electronic production that has become synonymous with Swedish Pop on the fantastic Stop Taking My Time and Into Air with pulsating synthesizers and

analog sounds. The vocals simply melt into the production like hot fudge on an ice cream sundae. Some of the pieces that did not fit well were the unnecessarily abrupt interludes. The interludes only halted or slowed down the albums pace and consistency. The least promising song on the album came from Run. The vocals seemed to be in a tug-of-war against the production. This power struggle created an unneeded tension and left much to be desired. The vocal delivery seemed forced and trying to compensate. The puzzle pieces don’t quite create the perfect picture but they do make an interesting and eclectic abstract expression.

WATCH THIS June Sneak Peeks

June is usually the month were we start to get the bulk of the summer blockbusters. May is always the lead in and June follows respectively, just like your favorite T.V. shows back to back. It’s also a unique month where we will get horror and romantic comedies to fill the gap. When all is said and done, June is a great month to test a struggling franchise or attempt a new one. Summer is almost here. Which movie are you going to watch in the theater while you cool down?

Man of Steel Probably one of the most anticipated films of the summer. It’s been too long since we had a Superman that the general public cared about. This time dawning the red cape is Henry Cavill. Joining him is an allstar cast that has some A-list actors such as Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Russell Crowe, Laurence Fishburne, and Amy Adams. The film is directed by Zach Synder and tells the origin story of the first superhero. Superman has to hide his identity because he believes the world is not ready. He tries to find his place in the world by adopting a new persona as Clark Kent. Raised by his adopted parents he tries to honor the ideals his parents raised him to believe in, but finds it hard to obey them when his new world is invaded. He embarks on a new adventure that will test his strength and his allegiance to the human race. The film opens June 14th.

This is the End The film follows real life celebrities trying to survive the Apocalypse. During a party presented by James Franco the unthinkable happens. An alien invasion of some sort has invaded earth and is killing everyone in sight. The last remaining survivors barricade themselves into James Franco’s home, attempting to wait it out. Soon it proves to be a bad idea and not only are they facing the end, but also hot headed celebrities trying to survive. The film stars James Franco, Seth Rogan, Rihanna, Jonah Hill, and Emma Watson. It also opens June 14th.

The Purge The Purge stars Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey as proud parents of two. They are living in a utopia where crime is at an all time low and the unemployment rate is non existent. This is due to a holiday known as “The Purge”. One day a year, for a few hours, everything immoral and violent is legal. People have been holding all their anger and hate inside and this is the one night where they can be free to express their hatred without punishment. During “The Purge” a stranger finds his way into their fortified home. Now the family must decide whether to help the stranger survive the night or feed him to the animals that want to see him dead. If you were in this situation, what would you do? The film opens June 7th as well.

World War Z Inspired by the book of the same name by Max Brooks, Gerry Lane, played by Brad Pitt, must help stop the zombie outbreak before it takes over the world. He travels the globe trying to find patient zero and a cure to prevent further infections. He has to leave his family to do this and isn’t confident that he will return. During his adventures he will face many of the infected, make sacrifices, and try to stop the relentless horde of the undead. The film also opens on June 21st

The Internship

The Heat

The Internship stars Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson as grown men stuck in the digital age. They are trying to sell their products to potential buyers but no one is taking the bait. Fearing joining the unemployment line they both get internships at the mega internet search engine Google. Thinking their age and street smarts will outdo the competition; they quickly learn that they have to come up with new tricks and cons if they want the job. This maybe their last chance at a decent livelihood and both men will do whatever it takes to get the job. It’s unfortunate for them that their competition is usually a step ahead. The college students know how important this job is and they won’t let it go without a fight. This film will leave you laughing for hours long after you’ve watched it. Catch The Internship in theatres June 7th.

Sandra Bullock teams up with Melissa McCarthy for a female version of 48 hours. One is a hard ass bounty hunter while the other is too worried about going through menopause. Together they have to stop a mobster before he can follow through with his evil plan. They get into many hijinks that will put a long lasting smile on your face. These two women have chemistry together that shines bright on screen. The film opens June 28th.

White House Down

Monster’s University This is where it all began. Ten years before Monsters Inc. Mike, played by Billy Crystal, is just a young Monster gearing up for college. He believes he can be the best monster ever and picks scaring as his major. He finds out that scaring people is harder than it looks. He meets Sully, played by John Goodman, who becomes his roommate and rival. Soon they find themselves getting into trouble and making enemies of their own. Facing expulsion they must come together and win a very special competition or face the reality of being monster rejects. The film opens June 21st.

White House Down is the better version of Olympus Has Fallen. It stars Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx as a pair of officers trying to save the white house from a group of terrorists. Together they have to save the president and protect his daughter. Given the cast this film should be popcorn candy for people ready for entertainment. It has received some positive buzz and may be the sleeper hit of the summer. The film also opens on June 28th. www.thegoodsmag.co

David Del Valle

By La’Trane Spears The life of a student intern, which most tenured professionals would describe as endless days of work fueled by stiff pastries and stacks of meaningful tempered coffee cups, is a world all too familiar to David Del Valle. As we shout the words “Student Intern”, his supporters reply “creative”, “fun”, “edgy” and “dedicated”, all of which are adjectives that are used describe David and not the interning experience. The days of “paid on meals” must be over, well that’s if we’re considering the response from his peers. Thus we believe it’s just David and his limitless nature to succeed. David over the past year has been working an assortment of jobs that has taken him anywhere from underneath freeways, standing in dried sewers, backstage at concerts and runway shows, to posing with models in front of a private jet plane and more. David is the epitome of being everywhere and anywhere, and we’re not talking about an adventure, we’re talking about the fashion industry. At 19, David Del Valle has done it all and it’s being noted by others around his community. “I met David at FIDM Orientation, I was impressed with his presence and poise. This is someone you just know is going to make a difference in all that he does”. We asked David about his motives and inspiration behind his notable passion for a young professional, without a breathe taken, he had a lot to say. “Most of my inspiration and style comes from music and trends of the 70’s and 80’s. Everything from The Clash, Pink Floyd, to The Cure, Madonna, and current artists such as Santigold, Empire of the Sun and The Addicts. Alternative Subcultures and smaller local urban artists I feel are the core to the greater creative communities pushing new limits to what standards and current perceptions are”.

Einstein coined the phrase “spooky action at a distance” to describe a phenomena today known as quantum entanglement. Einstein was bothered when his infamous equations showed that light can transmit information at speeds greater than the speed of light. He didn’t believe his own work. More recently, experiments have proven this phenomenon and left many scientists questioning the universe they used to know. For the sake of keeping this article on quantum mechanics digestible, I’ll refer to light as being a “particle.” This is for convenience and isn’t quite accurate. Light is not a particle, but it often behaves like one so, out of convenience, we pretend

it is a particle when doing certain calculations. Similarly, when I awake in the middle of the night lacking coordination, balance, or short-term memory, I pretend to be a woman and pee sitting down. This does not make me both a man and a woman; I’m simply pretending to be a woman out of convenience. The reality is, nobody truly understands what light is the best we can do is make educated guesses and models. This part is a little complicated. Oops. When referring to particles of light, scientists talk about a property of each particle which they have termed “spin.” The word “spin” has nothing to do with anything physically rotating, it’s just a label. The scientists involved in this discovery, though creative enough to uncover the mysteries of the universe, were simply not creative enough to string together a few Latin syllables to come up with a novel word. I digress. To make life easier, just consider spin to be the color of the particle, with two options: black or white (representing spin up and spin down). Now for the magic. When light particles A and B collide, they

become entangled. According to Yoda, there must be balance in the universe. When a future collision occurs (say between B and C) and the color of these particles change, then A will also change its color to maintain balance in the universe (and Yoda says “Good, it is”). Why is this worth writing about? First off… it’s cool—you have information being transmitted over long distance (they’ve done this over 90 miles so far) without any wires. The first high speed wireless communication system was built by nature, not IBM. That should be enough to satisfy a reader’s interest. But I’ve left the best ingredient for last, the ingredient that made Einstein so uneasy with his calculations. This information transfer occurs at speeds up to 10,000 times the speed of light. So traveling faster the speed of light is not only theoretically possible—it’s been done. Tune in next month when I further extinguish my scientific integrity and credibility by applying these unfounded principles of physics to telepathic communication.
