COMPARISON Compare with site B, C and D, site A do not have rectangular shape in order to get a easy arrangement. However, for ventilation, vegetable cover and pollution factors, site A located in a comparatively good air move-ment, planted surrounding and low level of air and noise pollution. It actually have a mountain view that the kids can have some kinds interaction with the natural. The main reason we choose site A because it can be easily accessed by foot bridge from MTR station to the site. Even it has a heavy rain, those children may notsuffer from the bad weather. Nevertheless, site A located on the centre of Lok Fu that students can just take few minutes walk to reach the park, shopping mall and public facilities.

CLIMATE ANALYSIS SUN PATH In site A, the sunlight normally comes from the Southeast by East in the morning. However, a certain amount of sunlight is blocked by two tall buildings. Thus, less sunlight can be captured. At noon, the position of the sun is exactly located at the top of the site. Therefore, the shadows produced by the buildings have less effect the capture of sunlight. In the afternoon, the sunlight comes from the Southwest. Since the Junction Road Park is located at the opposite of site A. Therefore, there is a large open are at Southwest and sunlight can be transmitted to site A directly in the afternoon without any blocking.

WIND DIRECTION Compare with site B, C and D, Site A do not have rectangular shape in order to get a easy arrangement. However, for ventilation, vegetable cover and pollution factors, site A located in a comparatively good air movement, planted surrouning and low level of air and noise pollution. It actually have a mountain view that the kids can have some kinds interaction with the natural. The main reason we choose site A because it can be easily accessed by foot bridge from MTR station to the site. Even it has a heavy rain, those children may not suffer from the bad weather. Nevertheless, site A located on the centre of Lok Fu that students can just take few minutes walk to reach the park, shopping mall and public facilities.

POLLITIONS Sound pollution is not a concerning issue that would not affect the site. As the site is located near to two roads, it is supposed to be noisy on the site, but the wall of the slope act as a barrier which blocks the sound from the vehicles on one road. It is measured 47-50db in the center of the site. The other road is located below the site, the slope and the plants there also blocks and absorbs the sound, highly reduce the noise pollution to the site. It is measured 43-45db on the pedestrian road in front of the site. The air quality is overall good. There are many types of greenery near to the site, it improve the air quality to a certain extend. As it is located on the hill foot, which is an open and flat land, the ven-tilation is good. Also as the wall of the slope act as barrier, it blocks the pollutants emitted by the vehicles.

LANDUSE The land use nearby the site is mainly residential area, thus it is comparatively quiet and provide a relatively comfortable environment for the children for they go to school or having lessons . Although there are many residential buildings but it do not affect the sunlight and ventilation of the site since there are a large flat land around. Lok Fu Park and a car park n the south and the west of the site, the space there allows the air and wind to pass through Site A.

Site A Residential building Park and playground Recreational Building Site A Entrance

The site is also convenient for the kids, parents and teachers who live nearby to go to kindergarten as the site is near to safe for the kids since the main pedestrian road is not located there and there would not have much strangers passing through there. There are mainly 60% of the land is used for residential and 25% of land are used for recreational land use, such as park and playground. The left 15% are mainly transport land use and commercial land use.

TRAFFIC AND PEDESTRIAN FLOW Overall, Site A is extremely convenient for user access. Near site A, there are bus stop, mini-bus stop and MTR. Also, the bus routes are enough surely to satisfy user need. The walking time from the site to those transportations are all within 15 minutes. Moreover, the users can go to MTR station by feet in the covered places and don’t need to across the car road and get wet by rain. The pedestrian line chosen in the map is not the shortest one. But it don’t need need to across the car road and get wet by rain. It can ensure the safety of the kindergarten students and more convenience for parents taking care of them.

User Analysis Population distribution Population pyramid show the distribution of various age groups in population. We can get general background information about Hong Kong.

Age Distribution By divided the data with area of Luk Fu, we can know how crowd site A to D is. If the average spacing is small, we may arrange some part of site area for leisure.

Educational Attainment In HK, there is 12-years free education. It show the actual number of preeducation or kindergarten students in HK. The number of student influences the size of kindergarten.

LABOUR FORCE PARTICIPATION RATE If the labour participant is low, that mean more family member can take care the child. We may need to desire a bigger llobby for the children take care person gathering.

MONTHLY HOUSEHOLD INCOME (HK$) It relate to how grant or leisure the kindergarten design is. If people earn more, they may demand a relatively comfortable or better design for the children learning environment.

STRENGTHS 1) The site provides pedestrian line which doesn’t include any car road and opportunity to get wet by rain. It can keep safety to the children and let the parent more convenient to look after children. (fig.1) 2) Middle level of the site block the noise and air pollutant from the car road upper and below. It makes low noise pollution and air pollution of the site. It can ensure good study environment for the kindergarten student. (fig.2,3) 3) Its location is in residential area and there are not many permanents passing. It is quiet enough and good quality environment. (fig.4)

(fig.1)

(fig.5)

4) The site is surrounded by green area and mountain. Student can enjoy nature view and fresh air. (fig.5)

WEAKNESS 1) There are two trees in the site, thus we have to consider how to locate these two trees when designing the kindergarten. As these two trees are very high and seems have old ages therefore we should not just cut it down but consider protecting them as an ecological friendly action.

(fig.2)

(fig.6)

(fig.7)

2) The site is in an irregular shape, it is difficult to design the kindergarten with well using the space provided of the site. For example the four corner of the site because some of them are sharp angle and one of them is in round shape. (fig.6) 3) There is a road for both bicycles and people in front of the entrance of the site, it may danger the user of the kindergarten when they enter the site. (fig.7) 4) There are also some roads when passing from the MTR station to the site. It may be danger to the user of the site as well. (fig8,9,10)

(fig.3)

(fig.8)

(fig.9)

OPPRTUNITIES 1) Since the site is surrounded by residential building and a slope hillside, it is created a safe and secure place for children, and also we can focus more on the design and pattern. (fig.11) 2) Site A is a triangular shape, although there is not suitable to design a regular building, it is a chance to create a creative and interesting form or shape of the new building. (fig.6)

A box open to the sky It is a square box composed of nine smaller squares. The center square emerges to bring light from the heights of the vestibule. The classrooms are arranged in the surrouning squares. This square structure is inscribed within a larger, circular enclosure made up of double circular walls. Open to the sky, four courtyards are created that suggest the four elements: air, earth, fire and water. The space between the perimeter walls serves as a “secret” place for the children. The courtyard spaces, tensed between the curved and the straight walls, are particularly remarkable. The central space, the highest and with light from above, recalls a hamman in the way it gathers sunlight through nine perforations in the ceiling and three more on each of its four façades.

THE WHITE WALL When the children inside the wall and look up, they would only see the blue sky and the white curve wall. The white not only creates a secret space for the children but also hides the game rooms and the toilets inside the wall.

FOUR ELEMENTS ( Air, Earth, Fire and Water ) There are four elements in the courtyard and surrounded by the white walls and the glass window. It provided a space that only connect to the sky and those four elements. The glass aside also allows to monitor the children when they are having outdoor activities.

PPRIVACY LEVEL Red: Public Blue: For staff Green: For Children & Staffs The higher the privacy level the more near to the center of the building. For exampe, the toilets and changing rooms are located near to the Hall.

CIRCULATION The circulation of this kindrgarten is quite convenient both for the children, the teachers and staffs. Each circulation is connected to the hall and then to each rooms. They are connected together through the hall. The four entrances are directly connected to the classrooms and the courtyard.

HALL The central space, the highest and with light from above, recalls a hamman in the way it gathers sunlight through nine perforations in the ceiling and three more on each of its four faรงades. It allows sunlight directly come into the rooms in different times and create different beautiful scene at different moments.

Reflective journal During the participation in the problem part, I think I have good try in the problem case, because we do not have much experiences on the problem case, we have a lot discussions on how to find the information, how to present it and how to make the booklet. I do the kindergarten designs, section and facades parts. I do not think I have done my best cause I cannot find much information, photos and pictures of the section and facades, we can only imagine how it built and put our knowledge of the foundations, systems to explain it. For what I learnt form the problem case, firstly, I learnt how to be responsible for the teamwork, because once you are in a team, you have to be responsible for your own part, and each part of the teamwork would affect the outcome. Secondly, I think the problem case do remind me the knowledge of the construction, it is a chance for us to refresh the memories of the technical skills from studying a case. Those foundations, building structural, especially pad foundation, column and beam systems, and the regulations of designing different type of buildings, there are not new for me but I do not even think about it before doing problem case when I am thinking about the design of the kindergarten in my mind. It tells a truth that I still have long way to learn and something need to be revision more so that I can be ready for taking the next challenge. I do apply what I learn form the case into the my own design. The first I want to talk about is regulations and the users requirements for the kindergarten, there are many things need to be consider when designing the kindergarten, the height of the toilet, stairs, the space allocation, the materials used on the floor and the wall, which is the best way to separate the study area and playground, etc. Secondly, the structural of the kindergarten, the case that we study is in column and beams structural. So, I used the column and span system this time, there are some difficulties when allocating the column as I have two level with different floor plan but still have to keep the distance from them, but finally I do finished it. There are many things that I learn from the seminars and lectures. The communicate and presentation skills, I think these two are the most important no matter in my future career of in my life, through

the communication with the lectures, giving comments to classmates, having presentations on the lectures, I did improve my communication skills and English of course. The lectures not even teaches us the knowledge that we have to know but lead us to think more about like the city planning, how would a area be with wrong city planning or wrong architectures, they lead us to have critical thinking and I think it helps a lot cause we need to know what we are and what we are going to do. Also, I learn a lot of the computer graphic skills like AutoCad, Revit, Photoshop and Illustrator. Actually, I do surprised by the convenient and the powerful of the Revit, and I learn Revit in a short time although more skills and practices are needed. I think I have a good analysis skills and a good communication with my group mates. But at the same time I need to improve my graphic presentation skills as I did present my design in a messy graph this time, also, time management is important as the life of being a architecture student is very busy and having a lot things to do at the same period, a better time management is really helpful. Also, my study plan and method have to make some improvement as I got a bad result of the quiz. I have my dream, it is to become an architect, this is what I willing to do, although there are still long way to go, a lot things need to be improve and many skills, techniques, and logic thinking I have to learn. To fulfill my dream, I will first gain experience from the internship, and have revision of the notes and browse more information of this field, try to gain more knowledge and skills as I can.
