Color cards of plant dye in different mordants. In the experiment I use three mordants: white alum, coppersulfate and ferrous sulfate. After this process the color can be more stable. We can also use it to creat various colors.

Plant Dye and Tie-Dye Technique This project focused on plant dye and tie-dye method. As chemical dyestuff has causing severe pollution to our environment, the prospects for plant dye is really bright. There are two directions on the color exploration, they are Chinese traditional medicine and various flowers. The color dyed by plant dyes mostly can't be as vivid as chemical dye, while the colors give a natural and elegant feel. To suit these colors and also because of the limitation of technique, I chose the method of tie-dye to make all the patterns. It's an unpredictable and interesting method.

50*60cm The inspiring vision is drawing in opaque watercolour painting. The theme is about autumn feel and fairy-tale-like dream. This is a bedding design for children and could also make adults recall their childhood.
40*50cm This is one bedding design which is inspired by Suzhou traditional garden. People are under a lot of pressure, so I want to creat a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere through this design. It could give people a feeling of wandering in beautiful classical park.
From the inspiring vision, I refined lots of motifs and created a series of patterns. Those patterns can be used on various textile products in the room such as cushions, curtain or wallpaper. 14
These are the simulated images for these two bedding design. The pattern refined from inspiring vision were used on various textile products in the room involves ceramic and lamp. In this way the motifs can form a harmonious atmosphere together.

Flower is the eternal inspiration for pattern making, This work was designed for jacquard fabric or digital printing. I was influenced a lot by scandinavia style that time, so I used the simplest way to deal with the motif of lili. I want to give a feel of natural and clean. The picture on the right showed the process of digital printing.
23
This is another pattern inspired by flower and it was designed for fashion. This time I put many different flowers together in vaious background to creat a lively feel. The series of images on the right are from a course of basic pattern training. I tried to use various visual language to describe the same object.

The inspiration of this embroidery project came from a series of X-ray photographes of plants. I want to modify that interesting effect on apparel design. I chose silk chiffon as petals and then used embroidery machine to patch them together. To get natural feel the chiffon was dyed by plant dyes.

This carpet design assignment is one of the main design assignment in my undergraduate period. I chose the Chinese classic carpet style but didn't follow the traditional structure strictly. The inspiration of this design is one of the most legendary river called Qinhuai River. It once owned the enchanting scenery and had played an important role in Chinese culture. I want to show that in this carpet design. There are some observation sketches. 32

The first one can produce pattern with rich layers and good sence of space. The second one can produce very thin lines. These two methods are often used together.

01 Drawing wax on the fabric. 02 The dyeing process. 03 This special effect on the fabric is called ice flaw. It's an old method from Chinese minority. Through changing the ingredient of the wax, different feel of flaw can be made. 04 Brushing the dye on the fabric for several times, the color would be more vivid. 05 After brushing the last layer of dye, another layer of wax should be cover on the fabric. So the color won't fade. 06 Brushing the wax. 07 The final step is to wipe off the wax by warm iron and newspaper. 08 Carve the wax on the fabric to draw very thin lines. 09 Before wiping off the wax, some residual dye on the surface must be washed away.

These pictures are from my daily sketch book. I like keeping diary by painting. Normally I am inspired by normal life, dream and travel experience. It's also used to take note of every interesting thought. 42
This is a series of quilting design finished in 2011. The inspiration comes from lifting smog. These images are three of nine works. cotton, embroidery 15*15cm*9
This is a hand-weaving project. In this work I tried to modify Chinese ink and wash painting, using different material to give traditional art a new interpretation. The inspiration came from a famous Chinese poem called River Snow. It describes a scene that an old man boating in river, and he is all alone by himself in that world. I want to create the same peaceful atmosphere in this work. On the upper part of the work I used teasing method to create the effect of undulating hills.
