ment with others beyond who they serve. The 2014 winner - Mission Adopt A Block - a non-profit organization administering an anti-litter program in the community since 1994. Over the past 20 years, they have grown into a multi-faceted program that encourages citizens of Mission to participate in a pro-active approach to keeping Mission clean through street adoptions, group cleanups, special events and education programs. Mission Adopt-A-Block Executive Director, Kristin Parsons advised that “Since winning the 2014 Business Excellence Community Builder Award, Mission Adopt-a-Block has seen an increase in exposure to the work that we do with more businesses recognizing the value we bring to the community. We have seen increasing interest from local groups looking for ways to collaborate together and find solutions to the litter and illegal dumping issues that plaque our community. Overall, this award has helped us to honour the hard work of all our amazing volunteers, to be recognized as a strong leader working hard to bring change to the community.” So get those highly valued customers to tell us why they keep coming back. It is with great anticipation that I really look forward to another “growing season” whether it be flowers, crops, businesses or as individuals. There are a great many reasons to celebrate the past year at the Chamber and to project forward in anticipation of an improving economic environment. To say goodbye to some staff and to welcome others in and to give them our full support. Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce is a hub that can connect you to resources on the north side of the Fraser Valley. We want businesses to thrive in Mission. Through connections, support and advocacy, we work to grow businesses in the region. Do you know that 70 percent of our member businesses have 5 employees or loss? Membership numbers in the Chamber are stable and while some business has moved on an equal number are coming in. The value the Chamber

adds to and for business is growing along with the membership. Nominate Me launched last week for the 2015 Business Excellence Awards. Nominate a business who continues to innovate, has a local focus, makes a difference to our community and give their customers exceptional service. Don’t forget the nominations are open to ALL businesses not just chamber members. We have a strong foundation at the Chamber which is complemented by a Board with a passion for Mission and its business community. We are moving into the election of board members in March. I would encourage and welcome any member to join with the Board as it continues to develop programs for the benefit of all businesses in Mission. Cory Cassel’s passion is building community. Through his work as publisher of What’s On! Mission Magazine, principal at Cory Cassel Productions, and events manager for The Stage at the old Bellevue Hotel, he always offers the public something different and exciting. Cassel, recognized for the local impact of his glossy and online event, entertainment and leisure magazine, is the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce 2014 Local Focus Business Excellence Award recipient. Cassel became publisher of the five-year-old publication in September 2013.

“To win the award gave me a feeling of validation. I finally felt like I was actually a business person. My nominations before came when I was an employee at Mission Community Services and the Bank of Montreal,” he said. “The magazine is a success because we worked very hard at creating buy-in in the community. We started out by reaching out to the non-profits, giving them a platform to get their message out. We did that by sponsoring space in the magazine, not by giving it away.” Now Cassel’s database includes some 200 people who make things happen in Mission.

But Cassel isn’t resting on his laurels. He relocated to Mission, plans to expand his magazine into two other communities and wants to build a publication for the LGBT community. An invitation by The Stage and Mission Springs owners Brock Rodgers and Ken Brookes for him to bring new life to the events-only venue is seen by Cassel as a golden opportunity. Look for murder mysteries, drag queen shows, and theme parties like you’ve never seen before: www.WhatsOnMission.ca.

Are You Practicing Business Excellence? Business Excellence is not just about winning awards. It might be nice to have the recognition and the award on the wall, but business excellence is also a process to make your company perform better - to be more profitable. There are lots of models for Business Excellence, with flow diagrams and self assessment questionnaires, which might seem a bit theoretical and academic for the small business owner, but thinking about business excellence can be a useful approach to improve how your company actually does business. Some of the areas the excellence models make you think about are leadership, planning, your process management, staff, the customer experience, and

your supplier/partner focus. Think about it, are you practicing business excellence? The models are designed to help you ask the right questions, but they rely on the business owner to figure out how to be excellent. Changing how a business operates is not an easy process, but you should always be thinking about other ways to work, and thinking about whether they improve any part of the model. Next time you do business with a company that seems to get business excellence right think about the parts of the model they have mastered. Business excellence is actually an old concept that started in the industrial revolution when a growing manufacturing sector needed to

ensure standardization and quality control. It has evolved into a business performance model that any business can use. The EFQM model defines business excellence as; “The relentless pursuit of continuous improvement in both an organization’s results and the way in which they are achieved” It does sound a bit excessive, but it also works. And good luck to all you potential business excellence nominees. Written by Allan Main – Community Futures Development Corporation North Fraser.
