The Chamber kicks off May with a Luncheon on May 21st with our friends at the District of Mission. Don’t miss your chance to get up to speed on what the district is working on as they present on upcoming projects and new initiatives through the Economic Development Office. Have your chance to ask questions on specific projects with key District staff. Thursday, June 11 our annual Business Excellence Awards will be presented at The Stage. Each year we have tried to change up our business awards to include as many businesses as possible and our members this year told us that they would like this event to be more of a dress up affair. This year we are rolling out the red carpet for our semi-formal celebration, complete with canapés, cocktails, champagne and live entertainment! Doors open
at 6:30 pm and tickets are only $65 We have some incredible businesses in Mission and their success deserves to be celebrated! The community gets to vote again this year and the online voting is open until May 19th. The community’s vote in conjunction with a panel of judges will determine the final recipients. Votes are limited by IP address so make sure you vote in all the categories. The awards this year are the President’s Award, Big Bang Award, Power of Small, Local Focus, Customer First and Community Builder. The top business leaders in the community will be in attendance and I invite you to come and build your network at the Awards, whether you are a nominee, a business owner or a community member. Everyone is welcome to celebrate with us!

Spotlight on Business: Mission Health Care Auxiliary: 95 years of so much more than knitted baby sweaters Kathleen Rake
CLICK MEDIA WORKS
“I’d sure like people to know what we really do,” says Alyce Campbell, vice-president of Mission Health Care Auxiliary Society (MHCA). “Sure, we have volunteers who knit and crochet gifts for baby, but we do so much more—and we’ve been doing more for 95 years.” MHCA and its volunteers help support health care in Mission by raising money to provide equipment and services, such as specialty equipment for use in the hospital; medical equipment loans (walkers, crutches, etc.) to residents for use at home; the emergency clothing cupboard at the hospital; bursaries; and activities and fun outings for people who live at The Residence in Mission (TRIM).
See the fundraising work in action when you shop at The Cottage Thrift Shop downtown or the gift shop at Mission Memorial Hospital, where there are women’s fashions and accessories in addition to the traditional gift-shop goodies. “Every time someone donates to or shops at The Cottage or buys something from the hospital gift shop,” explains Campbell, “they help us with resources to fund more services and equipment.” Of course, no organization grows strong for 95 years without great volunteers. “We currently have 124 fabulous volunteers, who each put in a couple of shifts a month throughout our numerous services, but we sure could use more,” says Wendy Matus,
MHCA president. And while she acknowledges MHCA needs volunteers for every corner of the organization, she says they have a special need for someone to “step forward and volunteer to help us keep our website current—maybe a high-school or UFV student.” Campbell adds there are educational opportunities as an MHCA volunteer. “And we always find time to have fun!” For more information or to volunteer, contact Campbell at 604-8202796 or jac02@shaw.ca, or Matus at 604-826-0003 or wmatus1@telus. net. Visit MHCA at facebook.com/ MissionHealthCareAuxiliary.

Building Companies, Creating Jobs and Investing in Futures
Welcome to Mission’s very own starting point for high tech and industry entrepreneurs seeking mentorship, training, resources, funding, office space, events and networking in the Fraser Valley. The Sumas Regional Consortium for High Tech (SRCTec) is a not-for-profit organization governed by a select group of technology executives that form a volunteer board of directors. As a consortium, SRCTec understands the necessary infrastructure and programs required within the Region, in order to create jobs, foster innovation and drive skilled technical training.
SRCTec is committed to the technology-led economic and educational development of the region. Recognized as a desired clean industry sector with tremendous growth potential, this concept is strongly supported by several local organizations including; Community Futures Development Corporation, the Chilliwack Economic Partners Corporation, District of Mission, City of Abbotsford, the University of the Fraser Valley, as well as key local Provincial MLA’s and Municipal Council representatives of the regional municipalities.
