The Power of Giving Back Christmas is a time for giving, but it should not end there – so let’s make an early New Year’s Resolution to give back to our community for 2015. Philanthropy plays a large part in the lives of many Mission residents, The Rock family featured on page 3 are a prime example of business owners and local residents who understand and appreciate the importance of giving back to their community. You just have to take a look at the long list of businesses and volunteers who devoted hours of their time and business funds for Mission’s 31st Annual Candlelight Parade (see page 2) to see volunteering creates a town that supports, encourages and comes together to create a great community vibe. During Mission’s Branding exercise earlier this year one of the questions was, “What does Mission mean to you?” local resident Jamie Hayes responded; “Community, I've never lived in a place with such a strong community bond and so many people who care and give their time”. We are not just talking about large donations or hours of volunteering, the smaller pieces are just as important and with survey results like The National Survey of Giving, Volunteering and Participation, it is obvious that all parties

and a community based organization we have a responsibility to share our resources for the betterment of the community in which we do business. It is deeply rewarding to be a contributor of time and resources to the residents of Mission and surrounding area as the results are tangible and for the betterment of all. Prospera Credit Unions is committed to making a meaningful difference in the financial wellbeing of its members and in the community in which we serve”.

can reap the benefits. Volunteering can improve job skills, give valuable work experience and build networking circles. Newly elected Councillor Pam Alexis feels pride and fulfillment in volunteering her time. “My motto in life has always been service with love....my parents always worked hard in their own community for the greater good and I have merely followed their example and haven't really questioned it as it has become a way of life. I love being with people. I love hearing their stories. I love working together for a common purpose. These are the things that bring me absolute satisfaction! With more consumers looking for the companies they use to show Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), with

a focus on social, economic, environmental and ethical responsibility; it makes sense for business owners to start on their own doorstep, using this as a platform to build better customer/ stakeholder relationships. Sean Melia Manager of Prospera Credit Union, Mission Branch knows all about giving back to the community, hosting events such as Cinema Under the Stars and the Prospera Community Appreciation BBQ, comments “Prospera Credit Union, as it is known today, has been a proud partner in Mission with roots stretching back for more than 60 years. In that time Prospera has helped to build the foundation of Mission by assisting its members to grow financial strength and contribute economically to the community. As a Credit Union

Shopping local and utilizing resources available within the community is an easy way to give back, supporting the local economy, creating jobs and maintaining a diverse commercial sector. This level of social responsibility not only falls to direct consumers but for those making business to business transactions. Alternatively, if joining a local volunteer organization is more to your liking check out the Chamber website, where many groups and non-profit organizations are listed, such as the Rotary Clubs of Mission , The Optimist Club, Mission Association for Community Living and Mission Hospice (to name but a few). Local Realtor and Rotarian Cal Crawford, says “I was raised with the belief that everyone has an obligation to contribute to the wellbeing of the community that you live in. And besides that, it just feels good.

DIRECTOR

December is a time for reflection and with that in mind; I would like to thank all those volunteers involved in the many Chamber of Commerce events in the past year, from the luncheons, Business Excellence, the Golf Tournament, the All Candidates Meeting and the recent Christmas Parade. We are so thankful for all those who pay it forward through the big or little things that they do throughout our community. We were very lucky this year to have in our community the 2014 Mission BC Winter Games and I believe as a community we gave it our all. We

had volunteers put in thousands of hours so that the young athletes could shine. Also we have many home-based and small businesses in our community that continue to grow and thrive because our community believes in SHOPPING LOCAL. And finally thanks to those organizations that volunteer their time and resources to assist people that are not as fortunate, it certainly shows in our community how much we care. Finally I think we would all agree that Mission is a great community to live and work. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Ann Harper PRESIDENT

President’s Award: Rock family repays community through philanthropy Rick Rake

CLICK MEDIA WORKS

Leadership dates back to the 1950s in Mission Unsung Mission contributors like the Rock family are a rare breed, and when Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce board of directors selected them for their President’s Award, the family was certainly surprised. By definition, the award honours tireless business leaders because they do their work for the betterment of all, “not for recognition.” Speaking on behalf of his wife Marjorie, sons Brian and Brent and their spouses, Cliff Rock, a long-time Mission pharmacist who is now retired and enjoying gardening and travel-

ling, said his family’s philanthropy is a way of repaying a community that has been very good to them. Historically, the Rock family roots are firmly planted in Mission, starting in the 1950s and continuing to 1976 when Cliff opened Mission United Pharmacy on First Avenue in the former Eaton’s building that eventually grew into the 10,000-square-foot Pharmasave that was later purchased by Shoppers Drug Mart. The family’s leadership has served Boy Scouts, the Salvation Army, Kinsmen and Mission Memorial Hospital board. Their support has significantly touched many Mission causes and projects, including Mission Arts

Council, Heritage Park Centre, Mission Hospice Society, scholarships administered by Mission Community Foundation, school lunch programs, Union Gospel Mission, All Saints Anglican Church, and Mission Food Bank. Cliff, the youngest of seven children, was born in Hammond in 1933. If Haney high school had not burned in 1953, fate may not have taken him to Mission for his higher education and apprenticeship before he graduated from UBC in 1958. GROWTH IN MISSION

BusinessTRACK

Mission Association for Community Living Employment Services MACL is Mission’s largest not-for-profit social service agency and runs numerous programs for businesses, families and individuals. The employment service is a great asset to the Mission business community that has a proven track record since its launch in 2013. MACL will match a member of their team to your business requirements through a pre-screening process, on site job training and on-going support and consultation to ensure your employer needs are being met. The benefits work both ways with the staff gaining new skills and the employer saving costs in recruitment and training, better team morale and employee motivation, and recognition in the community as a socially diverse business. It has also helped clients expand their customer base and loyalty. It’s a win-win! Many Chamber of Commerce members have witnessed these benefits first hand after hiring a person with a developmental disability. Fraser Valley Truck Parts, Pro-Oil Change, Wenting’s Bicycle Shop, The Mission Record and What’s On Magazine, as well as the Chamber itself, all work with the staff

through this program. Clare Seeley from the Chamber advised “This is our second year working with MACL and it has been a huge success. The team is always on time and work really hard, undertaking any challenge given. They have kept our grounds in beautiful condition regardless of the weather and we would not hesitate to recommend this service to other community members.” Businesses gain a new competitive edge through the customized employment strategies, by filling the gaps within their current staffing structure for those tasks or jobs that are just not getting done. Often, it is difficult for businesses to hire and keep a suitable individual to do tasks that only require a person for 2-4 hours a week. The best part of this service is that it is free for the employer and meets the employment goals of the individuals who want to work. We know first-hand that good attitudes are contagious and employing people with disabilities generates goodwill and fosters positive attitudes among coworkers and customers. Hiring people with disabilities
