Heritage bound

For a small town, we sure do have a colourful past. Did you know: we have the oldest dwelling in BC? Got our name from the mission built in 1861? Have the location of the first train robbery in BC, by the notorious train robber Billy Miner? Relive our past: • Fraser River Heritage Park – Stroll back in time to the site of St Mary’s church. • Jack Poole Harbourside Park – View the mighty Fraser River and iconic Canadian Pacific Railway Bridge, the first crossing link in BC to the USA.

• Mission Museum – located in Mission’s first bank. • Power House at Stave Falls – Learn how electricity is generated at one of BC’s early hydro-electric dams. • Kilby Historic Site – Feed the goats and sheep in this 1920s Fraser Valley living history farm, while learning about life during the early 1900s.

Learn more about Mission’s past through the murals located at Mission Archives and throughout downtown.

Stave Falls Dam Forest Interpretive Trail - Wind uphill along a trail like an old river bed, through a forest landscape with rugged granite faces. Stop and learn the role of Mission’s Municipal Forest. The view at the crest is breathtaking looking toward Vancouver, and in the flight path of bald eagles. Allow an hour. Hayward Lake Trails – Pick and choose your route depending on time and motivation. Trace the old railway line that meanders along the west side of the lake, taking in the beach and the off-leash dog park. Alternatively take the east side that rolls through the forest, over streams and with a short diversion, to get your face sprayed at Steelhead Falls. Rolley Lake and Falls Trail – Not only great for the kayak, canoe or fishing, Rolley Lake has a trail that hugs the shoreline: over boardwalks, where dragonflies lead the way to cooler climbs in woodland. Allow an hour. These are just a sample! Get your Parks and Trails Guide and more info from the Mission Visitor Information Centre.

Add our backdrop of mountain ranges and agricultural vistas and you have a little slice of heaven. Did you know: the Fraser River is the longest running river in BC and the tenth longest in Canada? The veldt of the Fraser Valley was once a flooded tidal marsh? For a birds-eye view check these out: Heritage Park – Serene trails take you to dramatic views across the Fraser Valley and into the USA, with Mount

Baker making for an impressive snowy landscape. Neilson Regional Park – Sit on the grassy banks of Hatzic Lake and drink in the view taking you across the lake and up into the Fraser Valley to the Cheam Ridge. Stave Lake Interpretive Trail – you are literally flying with the eagles from this rocky outcrop. See down Hayward Lake and on a clear day check out Vancouver Island in the distance. Flow of the Fraser

Whether you are looking to get your boat out on the water, or watch the current go by from the sanctuary of the shoreline, the Fraser River has an ever-changing cycle that makes it a place you can keep visiting, experiencing something different each time. Did you know: this year is said to be a record breaking year for sockeye? That the Jack Poole Harbourside Park is dedicated to the memory of a Mission resident, who chaired the Vancouver Olympic bid committee?

Fishing – During salmon season you will see fishermen lining the banks of the river – if you don’t already have your license you can get one in town. The fresh water license begins north of the Mission train bridge. Fraser River Safari - Wildlife viewing with a mix of history and culture; an ideal way to relax and enjoy the river. Jack Poole Harbourside Park – Great views, sculptures and storyboards all celebrating the flow of the Fraser. The best place to buy freshly caught sockeye is off the wharfs. STS Fishing Guides - Offering world-class guided Salmon, Trout, Sturgeon and Steelhead fishing on the Fraser River from the Stave River to Hope.

Touring the DTR

Rev your engines and cruise the DTR (Dewdney Trunk Road). Two wheels were made for this route where the city melts into the open road. Valleys and curves will keep you as thrilled as the amazing scenery. Highlights include crossing the historic Stave Falls Dam and winding down the s-curves to Hatzic Valley below. You can catch the Scenic 7 at both ends to loop back to your destination. Did you know the Dewdney Trunk was the original link on the north side of the Fraser, originally running from Port Moody to Dewdney, just east of Mission? Still a two lane road, it winds through the back of Mission without a single light. Want to extend the ride? Turn off on Ferndale and follow Stave Lake Road to the heart of Hatzic Valley and motor on to Sylvester before catching up with Hwy 7 again. Stops en route: Hayward Lake – “Take 5” at the beach or grab a picnic. A country store just outside the park entrance offers road coffee and hot take-out. Hayward beach area has tables, BBQ pits and full restroom facilities. Neilson Park – Stretch your legs and walk off the ride, you’re half way done. A hidden gem, Neilson Park is slightly off the beaten path and offers great views of Mt. Baker and Hatzic Lake.
