Experience the fraser trail project has great tourism potential
The Experience the Fraser Project will celebrate the Fraser River’s natural and cultural heritage, enhance outdoor recreation opportunities, showcase the regions’ riverfront communities and promote the Lower Fraser River corridor as one of the world’s great tourist destinations. This project will connect residents and visitors with communities, nature and the river by creating an opportunity for over 300 kilometres of multi-use trail and related amenities along the Fraser River from Hope to the Strait of Georgia. In 2009 the Province of British Columbia announced $2 million in funding to be split between the Fraser Valley Regional District and Metro Vancouver for the development of an inter-regional trail and facilities concept plan.
An additional $500,000 was provided to help build two demonstration projects that will form the first segments of the inter-regional trail network. The Fraser Valley Regional District has partnered with the District of Mission to develop its demonstration project, which features a trail segment and the Spirit Square along the Mission waterfront. On April 21 David Urban, Strategic Planner for the FVRD, spoke at the Chamber luncheon on the project. In the planning of the trail system, various spurs have been included that connect tourism attractions and recreation areas in the Mission area. They include the Stave Lake Interpretive Forest and Hayward Lake corridor in the west and Heritage Park trail to Neilson Park in the East.
“Connecting Mission’s trail and park system will encourage visitors to explore our natural assets and various attractions,” states Mission Economic Development Officer Stacey Crawford. “The Jack Poole Harbour Park on the Mission Waterfront is a beautiful demonstration project that illustrates the potential and multi-use of the trail system.” Longtime supporter, Randy Hawes, Mission-Abbotsford MLA, believes that this kind of trail system will encourage international visitors to enjoy all the aspects of the lower mainland, and draw them to experience the Fraser Valley in a truly dynamic way. President’s Message Thank you for electing me president. For those who are unfamiliar, and hopefully soon friends, I have worked in Mission for 22 years as a realtor. I have been involved with the Chamber for most of that time, and have the great fortune to have led this organization on four previous occasions. Over the last month, your Board of Directors has met and defined the direction and objectives under the goals of the Chamber; to grow, be financially sustainable, and to be an organizational force for our membership. We have several areas where we hope to engage our members, including our newly-launched member forum. Your input allows us to effectively advocate on issues that you are concerned about, and that have an effect on your ability to do business. Chamber News New Directors for Mission Chamber
Mission, BC - On March 9 the Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce held its annual general meeting in the Mountain Room of the Best Western. Members and the public attended to listen to Scott Ackles, GM 2011 Grey Cup, talk about the impact of such a large event on a community. In addition, ideas about using the Westcoast Express for transportation in a similar fashion to the way it was used during the Olympics were brought forward. Following Ackles, the business of the night was addressed. Eight people were elected to the Chamber Board of Directors. They include: Cal Crawford (President-Elect), Elyssa Lockhart (Vice-President Elect), Todd Bugge, Chuck Vander Byl, Ann Harper, Attila Davalovsky, Satti Grewal and Sean Melia. These members join the existing board that are completing their second half of their two year term, Ted Adlem, Phil Hope, Kelly Vaille, Mayor James Atebe (District Liaison), Oleene Herman (Community Futures Liaison), Dr. Lynden
Balisky (DBA Liaison) and Tony Lapointe (Treasurer). “The Chamber welcomes the addition of three new faces to the Board who bring their energy and passion for the community to the table,” commented Helen Secco, out-going Chamber President. “It tells me that there is interest from the Membership to continue to move forward.” The inauguration of the new Directors took place on Thursday, March 17th at the Chamber monthly luncheon. The luncheon also played host to a Member Forum which helped give the Directors a clear understanding of the needs and challenges facing the membership. Included in the discussion were topics including communications, events and how members can get involved. “Member input is crucial to the success of our organization,” stated Cal Crawford, President. “We look forward to implementing the suggestions we heard here today.” The Directors have since had a planning session to set the course of work for the organization this coming year.

Fraser River Heritage Park Trails The East Mission Heritage Greenway (Perimeter Trail and Hatzic Trail) Constructed during the summer of 2010, and officially opened last October, the East Mission Heritage Greenway has rapidly become one of the most-used features of Fraser River Heritage Park. Known informally as the Perimeter Trail, its 2.3km (1.4 mile) length circles the entire park, and also includes a bike trail from the D’Herbomez Creek bridge at the eastern edge of the park to Hatzic. The perimeter trail began as a project of the Mission Heritage Association, and the construction project was managed by Ray Herman and Tony Miniaci at the District of Mission. Construction of the trail was funded primarily through a LocalMotion grant from the province of B.C.

The route of the trail is dotted with new landscaping, including trees and plant beds. The crushed marble surface of the 3m (10’) wide trail is ideal for foot traffic, as well as strollers, walkers, and wheelchairs. Visitors from all over the Fraser Valley as well as Mission residents have come to the park to enjoy this trail since its opening.
The Heritage Walk Work continues on our Heritage Walk, generously sponsored by Mission Mid-day Rotary. The finished walk will include roughly 18 stations, each comprised of a bench and a storyboard highlighting features of historical, geographic, and cultural significance throughout the park. The project will be completed this summer. Wander the park and learn about the history of the site, various features of the park, and the park itself. Memorial benches in the park can be sponsored privately. For information regarding the benches, please contact the park manager, Don Brown.

fraser valley bald eagle – festival
2010 saw the largest concentration of bald eagles ever recorded in the Fraser Valley. Over 7,000 raptors descended upon the Harrison River in December to feast on the local spawning salmon. This of course attracted much attention for our area and created an awareness of the importance of keeping it wild and intact. The 2011 Festival Committee began planning for the November event in January, and is very excited to make some positive changes and adjustments to the annual festival. The physical number of sites will be reduced by combining them to enhance the visitor experience. More to see & do at fewer venues. Festival favourites will again be a huge part of the event, such as the Green Expo, eagle viewing boat tours, interpretive walks, hatchery, viewing sites, activity sites, speakers and the raptor display from the Vancouver Zoo. The Sts’Ailes Healing Centre will have a bigger presence with the addition of the “Eagle Café”, an amazing new joint project of the Chehalis Development Corp and the FVBEF – stay tuned for all the details as this isn’t your everyday café. bc hydro recreation in mission Throughout our province, BC Hydro has developed and maintains a wide range of recreational areas. In Mission, BC Hydro has two operating generating facilities (Stave Falls and Ruskin Generating Stations). The Stave Lake Reservoir is impounded by the Stave Lake Dam. Downstream of the Stave Lake Dam are Hayward Lake Reservoir and the Ruskin Dam and Powerhouse. Mission’s Waterfront Park
Soon to be Completed Last summer our Mission Waterfront received a long overdue face lift, the New Jack Poole Harbour Park was unveiled. If you have not had a chance to visit the park, it’s time to do so. We have a unique waterfront that now has a gathering place for all Mission residents which features a 13ft sturgeon carved from cedar by a local First Nations carver. Since the destruction of the original Harbour Park, Mission Harbour Authority (MHA) members have made it a priority to revive the area to create an inviting spot for all visitors to enjoy. The recent announcement of funding to complete the project was a victory for the MHA Waterfront Improvement Task Force. Members, Joanne Chadwick, Rob Chadwick, Shelly Clarkson, Vic Carrao, Bill Hunter, Myrna Mathews & Gerry Chabot met every Wednesday for brain storming sessions on how to move their ideas to fruition. Thanks in part to the unwavering vision of the group, Mission will soon boast a new and improved Waterfront, and that is just the beginning…
