Downtown Optimism on the Rise New Tools to Attract Development It’s important to mention that Mission implemented a $295 fee-based pre-application inquiry service in 2010, which we were concerned would have a negative impact on inquiries and applications. To the contrary, it is being viewed as a heightened service as developers have the opportunity to meet with all the relevant municipal departments at one time, and are subsequently provided with written feedback following the meeting. The development community appreciates the service because it provides them with direction, in writing, on the process they need to follow. Additionally, in 2011 the District of Mission took two very important steps in improving service to business owners, development interests and the gen-
eral public by approving both BizPal and a web-based GIS application to access maps and geographic data on-line. BizPaL is an online business permits and licensing service. This service is the result of collaboration between the Government of Canada, the province, and the District of Mission. This service asks you to answer a short series of questions about the nature and scope of your current or proposed business. Based on your answers, you are then provided with a customized list of potential permits and licenses from all levels of government that you may require to operate your business.
Acknowledging the economic challenges over the past two years, we recognize that the impacts were even more apparent in the concentrated core of downtown Mission. Fortunately, there is now a considerable amount of investment optimism as affordability and long-term investment potential within the downtown core are attracting new businesses and the purchase of buildings and properties. Indeed, buildings and properties are changing hands, and 11 new businesses have or will be open between January and July of this year, with more anticipated – all very compelling indications of investor confidence. Clearly, businesses and property owners are recognizing the opportunity associated with downtown Mission. So, what Continued on page 5

President’s Message The door is open; we just have to walk through. Sitting for the fifth time as president of the Chamber, I realize how the organization has evolved in its scope and role in the last 20 years. The opportunity to represent over 430 local businesses’ concerns, successes and challenges to all levels of government is a valued responsibility of the Board. Imperative to this is the Chamber’s role to communicate positively what our community as a whole has to offer. It is our belief that a positive outlook attracts business, new residents and visitors to our area. That will give our members opportunity for success. As you can see from the front page article, Mission has a lot of possibilities and upcoming growth. Recently, a long-time member came to me concerned about the negativity that is circulating around Mission. Their worry was the effect it is having on the business community. It ignited an awareness in me on how I communicate about our community, how others talk about it and what those outside our community say. What amazed me was how easily we all turn to using negative words to describe what I feel is an amazing and beautiful place to live and work. More concerning to me is how we don’t
even notice sometimes when we are being negative, and in some cases wear the negativism as a badge of honour. I realize as a long time realtor in Mission I market and sell Mission. I regularly speak to those interested in relocating. They speak to me about the livability, the beauty, the affordability and the sense of community that Mission has. I am lucky, I guess, to be able to have a chance to look anew at our community through their eyes. I often wish I could bottle their excitement and share it with others. So when does it shift? When do we start to buy into the negative and stop seeing the potential? All communities certainly have their challenges, and Mission is no different. Contentious issues come and go. What sets a community apart is how we approach the issues and are able to move on. I have long believed that in all situations there is always a door to opportunity. Sometimes it is hard to find,
but with patience and trust it will present itself in a less obvious way; not always how you wanted it, but nevertheless a possibility. Mission is full of these doors. Community organizations like: Mission Community Foundation, Rotary (Midday & Sunrise), the Optimist Club, the Cedar Valley Lions and Mission Community Services. There are resources for employment, social development, culture, arts and business ready and able to teach, promote and engage all. Renowned events such as the Mission Folk Festival, Envision Twilight Concert Series, and Mission Raceway NHRA races. There are so many positive things happening it is amazing to me that we hear so much negativity. It’s time that we remove what ties us to the pessimism and walk through the door of opportunity. I encourage all of you to start by simply saying one positive thing for every negative; it is amazing how quickly they really aren’t so depressing after all. Enjoy the sun and your summer!
Cal Crawford

BC Chamber News Annual General Meeting Prince George - BC Chamber of Commerce calls for restoration of the business vote and open competition in liquor retail. Mission Chamber President Cal Crawford attended and participated in policy sessions on behalf of the Mission membership. Resolutions calling for the creation of the business vote and a level playing field for liquor retail in BC were passed by Chambers of Commerce from across the province who gathered at the BC Chamber of Commerce Annual General Meeting & Conference. “Delegates have re-established support from BC’s business community for the creation of a business vote in municipal elections,” said
John Winter, President and CEO of the BC Chamber of Commerce. “They have also called on the provincial government to allow private business to compete with the government on price in liquor retail.” Presentations on Northern BC Economic Development, Ethical Oil and Community Cultural Identity provided delegates a wealth of information on broader economic issues of British Columbia. Additionally, Minister Pat Bell (Ministry of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation) and Finance Minister Kevin Falcon spoke in the new vision of Premier Clark’s government and the proposed changes to the HST. “These and other policies passed at our AGM &
Policy discussion at BC Chamber of Commerce annual general meeting.
Conference demonstrate the strength of the BC Chamber grass-roots policy process, and its ability to reflect the issues which are impacting business communities across BC,” stated Winter.
Mission President Cal Crawford concurred, “It was great to see policy development in action on a provincial level and being able to add local members’ voices to their enhancement.”

Welcoming New Business to Mission 2011 Winner of
EA DI T IN NE O OU R T
Continued from page 1 are the reasons for this optimism? I believe it begins with the recognition of how important our downtown core is. Not just for its historic value, but for its importance in helping shape the future of our community. It has often been said that downtown is the “heart of the community”, and there is ample evidence to support this claim. As the downtown community continues to develop partnerships, options and opportunities, there is recognition that if more new businesses are going to be fostered and encouraged, the community will need a downtown where that can take place. As such, the District of Mission is working closely with the downtown stakeholders to develop policy and incentives that encourage highly attractive mixed use developments that complement the character and historic values of our downtown core. When it comes to building community, the future of downtown Mission is a critical component to a successful future.
With the level of attention being placed on downtown, the future looks very promising for the business and investment community. Welcoming New Business Over the next month Mission will be welcoming several new businesses. In Solterra, Silverdale’s Industrial Park, Technaflora will be relocating from Port Coquitlam. A producer of plant nutrients for the specialty garden market, they will be a welcome addition to the many local business that have already relocated to Solterra. Downtown will see more openings including Dakota Joe’s, MTF Price Matters and Dogwood Bakery. Work continues at the commercial project on Stave & 11th with possible openings scheduled for early this fall. With over $900 million in potential infrastructure projects pending, Mission is well poised to see more of this growth in the coming months.

Some Sound Advice
Celine To…
PROTECTING YOUR INVESTMENT For decades the Mission Fire / Rescue Service has been working with local businesses in protecting your investment through regular fire inspections. Through continued education and consistent fire inspections the business community has responded positively, creating greater safety for their business operation, and the clients and customers they serve. In addition to the life safety and fire code requirements is the investment in fire prevention. Building and business owners generally look at long term investment either for the property and building or establishing a viable business and customer base. Should a fire occur within a business, downtime and re-establishing a solid customer base in an alternative location can prove challenging and costly. A goal of the Mission Fire/Rescue
Service is to work with building and business owners to keep your investments code compliant. Should you decide to sell your business or building or possibly retire, fire code compliance can be a key factor in a smooth transaction and sale. Overall, a fire loss within a business or property combined with reconstruction, parking issues, etc. can drive customers and clients to look elsewhere due to inconvenience as well as affecting other businesses within that core area. Fire Prevention first and foremost is about life safety, but it also makes good business sense. Consider fire prevention as part of your business investment. For more information on how to make your business fire safe, contact the Mission Fire / Rescue Service at 604820-3794 or visit us online at www.mission.ca/fire.
Continued from page 5 munities in Asia. She has applied to both UBC and SFU, and with a high GPA she is sure to be accepted at either. It is easy to see that Celine will be successful in her areas of study. In order to raise funds to attend Youth Day in Spain, she partnered with her brother to pick organic blueberries in Mission and sell them in West Vancouver to a client base that she quickly established. She has continued to work two jobs in order to save funds for university. Even with such a full calendar, Celine still finds time to volunteer at St. Joseph’s and helps fellow students. She credits her teachers as strong influencers who have helped her reach her potential. Mission Regional Chamber of Commerce is pleased to present Celine To with a $1,000 award from the Business Legacy Fund.
