New Film Database: Black Studies in Video

The latest addition to our streaming video database collection is Black Studies in Video. It includes award-winning documentaries, newsreels, interviews and archival footage surveying the evolution of black culture in the United States. It can be found on the Library’s Research Databases page, under the subject Films & E-Books.

We have a New Librarian!

Edit Boghozian joined the Library in August as the Access Services/Systems Librarian.

Edit has a strong background in cataloging, acquisitions, and technical processes; and has also provided oversight to circulation activities. In addition, she has worked Reference and coordinated and managed the workflow between collection development acquisitions, cataloging, and circulation.

She received a Master of Library and Information Science from San Jose State University.

Edit started her library career path as a Library Aide within the San Mateo County Library System. She was later promoted to Library Assistant and eventually hired as a Librarian. Her most recent position was as a

Sr. Cataloger in the Palo Alto Public Library System where she played an instrumental role in converting from SirsiDynix Horizon to Sierra.

Edit is looking forward to working with our Public Services team and supporting the Millennium integrated library management system for us.

MLA Style has Changed

MLA recently released the 8th edition of its Handbook and there are many changes you will need to note. The Library has a copy of the new edition in our Reference Collection and all of our handouts have been updated for the new style. In addition, we created a new handout, MLA 7th versus MLA 8th, which summarizes the changes and provides side-by-side examples of the old and new styles. The handouts can be found on the Library’s handouts page and the Citing Sources guide, both can be accessed from the Library’s Online Services page.

NoodleTools has also been updated to conform to the 8th edition of MLA, but the automated citations generated by the Library databases will not be updated for a while. Some may even take up to a year. Please caution your students that if they copy and paste a citation from a database article, they will need to reformat it to follow to the new style.

iClicker Student Response System

The Library has several iClicker Response Systems available for faculty, staff and administrators to use during classes, training sessions, and meetings. Each set contains 48 student clickers, an instructor base receiver, instructor remote and associated power and USB cords and is available for 24 hour check out. New York Times Digital Access

This is a reminder that all Mission College faculty, staff and students have access to a complimentary

subscription to the digital edition of The New York Times (retail cost is $325). In addition, faculty can register for NYT inEducation, a repository of sample lesson plans, instructional strategies and classroom teaching ideas. For more information, refer to the New York Times Digital Access guide available on the Library’s Faculty Services page.

Students are Charging Up @ the Library

The Library has new charging towers scattered throughout the building. Each tower (pictured below) has eight power outlets and eight USB charging ports. In addition, in areas where power is available (computer area and cubicles), there are short towers with just the eight SUB charging ports for quick device charging. We even have phone chargers for both iPhone and Android available for check out and use while in the Library.

The Library Textbook Collection

Most faculty and staff (and practically all students) are aware that the Library has a collection of textbooks available at the Check-Out Desk. It’s one of our most heavily used collections. However, we can’t purchase every required textbook used by every course every year. Before you tell students they can get your textbook in the library, please check to see that we have it by looking up your course name and number in the Library Catalog.

Many times we will have a slightly older edition of a text (especially if it is frequently updated with minor revisions); please let your students know whether or not it's ok for them to use those editions. If different faculty in your department use different editions or versions of a book, we probably will not have all the different editions, and we generally do not purchase workbooks that are designed to be written in.

We check out textbooks in the Reserve Collection to students for two-hour use in the library only. Normally we purchase only one copy of each

book, although for a few courses we will have multiple copies available. Older editions of some textbooks may be available in our circulating collection for three-week checkout.

Finally, and most importantly, we purchase our textbooks based on the list provided by the Bookstore each semester. If you did not submit your textbook order to the Bookstore, we won't know what you are using in your class and we probably won't have your book in the Library. If you have extra copies available, we encourage you to bring them over and have us place them on "Instructor Reserve" so they can be used by your students. Please fill out a Library Reserve Request form for each item you would like placed on reserve.

Curious about Virtual Reality?

Experience the easy way to get into virtual reality – check out a New York Times Google Cardboard viewer from the Library.

Thanks to a generous gift from the New York Times, the Library now has 20 virtual reality viewers. Turn your smartphone into a virtual reality headset. Just insert your smartphone into the fold-out cardboard mount and use compatible apps to create an augmented world when you look through the lens. Viewers can be checked out for one week at a time (no renewals).

Embed Streaming Videos into Your Canvas Course

Embed streaming videos from the Mission College databases into Canvas. Students will be able to watch the video with one click.

We currently have three streaming video databases: Films on Demand (covers all topics), Black Studies in Video, and Nursing Education in Video. The last two are produced by a company called Alexander Street Press, and the procedure for embedding is straightforward. Embedding content from Films on Demand is trickier and you will need to read the Library’s instructions. The instructions are available on the Library’s Faculty Services page. An active Library account is needed to access the Library's online resources (e-books, streaming videos, databases, etc.) from off-campus. You will need to come in person to the Library Check Out Desk with your Mission ID card to activate your account (students are

automatically added to the Library’s system when they register).

Schedule a Library Orientation

Faculty Resources

We REALLY want to help your students succeed – and one of the best ways is to schedule an orientation session for your class, tailored to the assignments that you are giving the students.

Best of all, you don’t even have to come to the Library. We can come meet your students in the comfort of your own classroom so you don’t have to take the time to bring them over to the library (and you don’t have to risk losing them as you pass KJ’s on the way). A basic orientation covers use of library databases appropriate to your assignment, as well as how to search the Library Catalog. Special orientations can be tailored to the needs of your students, whether they are developmental learners or honors students.

To schedule an orientation for your class, go to the Class Orientation page and check our Online Orientation Calendar to see if the dates you want are available.

Then fill out the Orientation Request Form. Note that your orientation is not confirmed until you have received an email reply. Please schedule your orientation at least a week in advance so that we have time to prepare for your class.

Recommend a Purchase

Faculty are encouraged to participate in the development of the collections in their respective subject areas. Final decisions on materials will be made according to the Library's Selection of Material Policy.

Sonia Nazario Latino American Author & Speaker Mission College Library Wed., October 26, 2016, 11am & 7pm Sandra Nazario is an award-‐winning journalist whose stories have tackled some of this country’s most intractable problems -- hunger, drug addiction, immigration -- and have won some of the most prestigious journalism and book awards.

A fluent Spanish speaker of Jewish ancestry whose personal history includes living in Argentina during the so-‐called dirty war, Nazario spent 20 years reporting and writing about social issues for U.S. newspapers.

She is best known for Enrique's Journey, her story of a Honduran boy’s struggle to find his mother in the U.S. Published as a series in the Los Angeles Times, Enrique's Journey won the Pulitzer Prize for feature writing in 2003. It was turned into a book by Random House that became a national bestseller and is now required reading at hundreds of high schools and colleges across the country. A Young Adult version of Enrique's Journey was published in 2013 aimed at middle schoolers and reluctant readers in high school.
