a section with a mission PRESIDENT’S CORNER Hello Mission Valley FBLA! Thank you to everyone who attended the Officers and Advisers Training (OAT) Day in September and LDI South in November. I am so proud to see all the Mission Valley FBLA chapters taking all the opportunities available to become more involved in this organization.

Please continue your involvement by participating in the new Section Projects and the updated State Projects. Remember that your chapter will be recognized with a ribbon at the Section Leadership Conference and a certificate/ribbon at the State Leadership Conference for completing these projects.

I look forward to seeing each and every one of you at the Mission Valley Section Leadership Conference in February! Let’s make Mission Valley stand out and dominate as we continue to pioneer possibilities. FUNDRAISING TIPS!

UPCOMING EVENTS

Tip #1: Execution and distribution methods are crucial February 1: Leaders in Action, Internship, and Professional Division elements to a successful fundraiser. After that meeting, the team planned a “bonding day” at Laser Quest. We had an amazing time attacking each other with laser guns and later enjoyed a very fun dinner filled with laughter and jokes. No crickets were heard! The meetings since have been much more interactive because we all knew each other a little bit better and were more comfortable together. Even if chapter members only have time to eat a fastfood meal together or participate in a quick ice breaker activity, they will get to know one another just a little bit better and be far more comfortable in each other’s company. It’s time well spent!

DO YOU DO BUSINESS? DO YOU CARE? Mission Valley Section Projects have been uploaded onto www.cafbla.org under our section’s page and can be found under the “Files” section in the “Section Projects” folder. The two section projects are Mission Valley Does Business and Mission Valley Cares. One provides members with hands-on business experience and the other provides members with volunteer experience, respectively.

Here is a brief overview of each of the projects: 1. Mission Valley Does Business - Chapter Project (Must Be Received by Jan. 30, 2013) Select one of the two options: Option 1: Visit a Business -Take a tour around a business; follow all guidelines under this option Option 2: Sell a Product -Learn how to operate a business and raise money for a non-profit organization; follow all guidelines under this option 2. Mission Valley Cares - Chapter Project (Due the 30th of every month) Participate in at least one section organized event -For any three of the four months out of October, November, December, and January, attend a community service event -Summaries, pictures, and forms for each of these events are due on the 30th of the month that your chapter participates in the project Completing these chapter projects will help members expand on “service, progress, and education.” Therefore, we highly encourage you to complete these projects! Your chapter will also receive ribbons for nametags during the section leadership conference as recognition.

MISSION SUCCESS! During the weekend of November 17-18, the Mission Valley Section Team, along with the other section teams in the South hosted the 2012 Leadership Development Institute (LDI). This year’s conference had a record number of attendees with over 935 members! Mission Valley Section had the largest attendance at the conference!

At the conference, members enjoyed unique experiences only FBLA could provide. Once the members arrived at the Hyatt Regency hotel, they were greeted with the opportunity to meet and socialize with members from all across Southern California. Then, the first two rounds of workshops started. The workshop topics ranged from Public Speaking to Personal Finance. After the members were presented with the opportunity to learn from the Section Officers and Professional presenters, they were treated to a hearty lunch and the Opening Ceremony, led by California’s State Officer Team. After another six rounds of workshops, the members attended the Zumba Workout.

Then, members were able to have fun at the LDI Dance!

On Sunday, members took practice tests to prepare themselves for the upcoming competitions at the section leadership conferences. After the rounds of practice tests, the Section and State Officer Teams presented Closing Ceremony. The members were entertained by the State Officer Team playing Chubby Bunny and the Flashback Video of LDI 2012.

This year’s LDI was one of the greatest of all time. With the largest Leadership Development Institute in the history of California, and Mission Valley being the largest section in attendance, there are high expectations for California FBLA and we can beat them!

SCAVENGER HUNTS, SCIENCE, & BUSINESS Mission Valley’s OAT Day at the California Science Center, was very successful as we had a record-breaking 115 attendees. We started off with our opening session with the introduction of the Section Officers. During Opening Session, each school cheered loudly as their chapter was called out during roll call. The Section Officers then introduced themselves to members and offered a warm welcome.

Soon after, the Section Officers proudly presented a workshop on their respective positions to give members an idea of their upcoming responsibilities. The Section Officer incorporated many activities and icebreakers in their workshops to make their presentations more engaging. The second round of workshops provided general knowledge of FBLA as Section Officers presented workshops on a “Roadmap of the Year” and “Section and State Projects”.

Throughout the day, chapter officers were able to network with each other. We concluded OAT Day with a competitive activity. Each chapter was instructed to create a scavenger hunt, based on what they learned at the California Science Center. The winning chapter would receive a Competitive Events Study Guide. Later in the day, we held our closing ceremony and the Section Officers were able to thank everyone for coming. After reading through many creative scavenger hunts, the Section Officers voted for the one they liked best. Congratulations to San Marino for winning the scavenger hunt!
