RECRUITMENT GUIDE 2019
| 02
President Welcome to the Bulldog Family! I am so excited that you have already made two of the best decisions of your college career: choosing Mississippi State and taking the opportunity to join the Greek community! Recruitment week is a time like no other and it is only the beginning. There are so many exciting things waiting for you this week, this year, and the rest of your life as a sorority woman, should you accept a bid! When I was in your shoes just three short years ago, I could have never anticipated all that Mississippi State and my own chapter would give to me. Since then I have gained over 200 sisters, spent endless nights laughing until I couldn’t breathe, learned what it means to be a true friend, found a passion for philanthropy, been encouraged to step out of my comfort zone, challenged to be my best self, developed leadership skills, and so many more things to which words cannot do justice. Ultimately, the sorority experience has given me more than I could possibly return and has impacted my life in a lasting way. As you step into this process, know that you are about to meet some incredible women in every single house! Each chapter is unique; comprised of a diverse group of women with various backgrounds, interests, and stories of how they got to where they are now. This means that each house has something different to offer and I encourage you to find the place you feel most comfortable to be yourself. Enjoy getting to know them and remember that it is a privilege to be invited into their home and catch a glimpse of what their sisterhood means to them. As president of this wonderful community, it is my job to be your cheerleader, your advocate, and your guide. As you go through this week, I want to reassure you that I am always here for you and rooting for you, but my job doesn’t stop after Bid Day! This is just the beginning. I am excited to serve you as the potential new members of the Panhellenic community, so please do not hesitate to come to me whether you need help, advice, or just a friendly face in this new home away from home. Again, welcome to MSU; we are SO excited that you are finally here!
In Maroon and White, Rachel Dumke Panhellenic President

DIRECTOR OF RECRUITMENT Hi ladies!! I am so beyond excited to welcome you to Mississippi State University! Deciding to go through recruitment is by far the best decision I have made throughout my college career. Sorority recruitment week is an experience like no other and we cannot wait to help guide you through it! During recruitment week I encourage you all to make the most of every minute. The best way to do this is by going into the whole process with an open mind and a positive attitude. When you visit each house, do not be afraid to ask questions! You are potentially meeting your new sisters in each house you walk into, so tell them about yourself, learn about them, and make connections! For many of you, sorority recruitment is the first experience you will have as a college student, but it will certainly not be your last. By becoming an active sorority member at MSU, you will get back as much as you put into it! MSU sorority women are greatly involved on campus through organizations, community service, and gain recognition for their many philanthropy events. They also maintain a higher GPA than the all women non-greek average. All 8 of the houses on our campus have something unique to offer and it is my hope that you are able to find your home away from home within one of them. Joining a sorority will promote individual growth, scholarship, service, character, and long-lasting friendships. I encourage you to make friendships based off your own personal values and characteristics as you go through this process. I sincerely hope you find a group of women you can trust and confide in, laugh and cry with, and a group of women you will have inseparable bonds with for not only four years, but the rest of your life. Once again I am so excited that you all have decided to participate in MSU Sorority Recruitment and I cannot wait to see where you all end up! Remember to make the most of this week and have fun! Recruitment can be overwhelming at times but our Panhellenic Council and our 52 Gamma Chis are here to help guide you through it all. Get excited! In Maroon and White, Addie Melchior Director of Recruitment

Recruitment At Mississippi State University, the National Panhellenic Council uses a Values Based Recruitment process. This is to help our chapters and the potential new members make real connections and build relationships as well as discover the interests they share with the active sorority members on our campus. When you register for recruitment we ask you to put the three values that you feel mean the most to you. For example, my three values would be
Authenticity
Belonging
Accountability
These are 3 of the many values there are to choose from. Feel free to make it your own, this is your way to stand out and show the chapters what you’re about! Your values may include Consistency, Authenticity, Acceptance, Accountability, Honesty, Diversity, Faith, Sincerity, Service, Academics, Transparency, Community, Belonging, and the list goes on. - Addie Melchior, Director of Recruitment

Letters
What is a Recommendation letter?
A letter of recommendation is a form filled out by an alumna of a sorority on behalf of a potential new member. The recommendation letter generally speaks about your character and verifies accomplishments, grades, and activities you are involved in. The alumna should refer to the national website of her affiliation for more information on these forms as they vary from sorority to sorority. You will not know if a chapter receives your letter of recommendation, you must trust the alumna who you have asked to write your letter of recommendation. If you send her a thank you note promptly, it may help remind her. Recommendation letters generally need to be received by the chapters no later than August 1.
How can I get one?
Begin to ask around and contact people you know who were members of sororities: teachers, family members, neighbors, family friends, members of your church, etc. Let the woman know that you are participating in sorority recruitment at Mississippi State and that you would like them to write a letter of recommendation on your behalf. The alumna should know how to obtain the form from her respective chapter, usually from the national website. Once someone agrees to write a recommendation letter for you, you will need to provide the woman with a resume and a photo of yourself (a wallet size senior portrait works great!). It is nice to provide a pre-addressed, pre-stamped envelope for the alumna. The addresses to which each chapter at Mississippi State would like their letters of recommendation sent to can be found below. Each chapter requires at least 1 recommendation letter. If you are unable to find an alumna to write your recommendation letter the chapters should assist you in finding one.

RECRUITMENT
RULES AND POLICIES
Actives, Gamma Chi's, and Panhellenic Executive Council members may not live with PNMs during the summer months from MSU Spring Graduation until Bid Day. It will be responsibility of the sorority woman to move out. Sorority women, including alumnae, shall have no contact with prospective PNMs beginning the day of MSU Spring Graduation until Bid Day (except to ask for recommendation letters to be written.) No active or alumnae may spend money personally on any PNM or prospective PNM at any time. Normal contact is allowed (work, run into in hometown, etc.), but the conversation must not be used to recruit a PNM to a specific organization. No active chapter member can request personal information from potential new members or from any relative or friend of the potential new member (for example: resumes, pictures, etc). There must be no communication between sororities/actives and registered PNMs during formal recruitment except during scheduled parties. This period of silence begins 8 days before Bid Day.

To help make recruitment a little easier for you, Panhellenic will provide you with a shirt to wear for the Go Greek days (Monday & Tuesday), Philanthropy Day (Wednesday), & Sisterhood Day (Thursday). These shirts will be passed out during the orientation on Sunday the day before recruitment week starts by your Gamma Chi. We recommend pairing these shirts with appropriate shorts or a skirt, sandals, and jewelry to make the outfits your own! Below are the colors of the shirts you will be given so you can start planning outfits!
Preference Night, often referred to as "Pref Night", is the most serious and formal night of Formal Recruitment. To keep with the seriousness and importance of this night, choose a dress you feel beautiful in to wear on Friday. A dress with heels or wedges and nice jewelry are great for Preference Night.

CODE
OF
ETHICS
As members of the Mississippi State University Panhellenic Association, we, the undersigned, agree that our vision is a safe, positive, enriching recruitment experience with the goal of providing opportunities for the greatest possible number of women to obtain membership in a women's fraternity. In order to reach our common goal, we will strive to create a Panhellenic environment of trust, honesty, unity, and cooperation among all chapters. Therefore, we solemnly promise to: Respect ourselves, our sisters, and the Greek community as a whole. We will work with other sororities to improve the Greek community. Enable every Potential New Member an equal opportunity and act accordingly with true Panhellenic spirit as well as our own chapter values and moral judgements. Promote the safety and protection of current and prospective members. Treat Potential New Members with the same respect before, during, and after recruitment. Abide by all official Panhellenic codes, including but not limited to: The Panhellenic Creed, The Potential New Member Bill of Rights, The Panhellenic Recruitment rules, and The National Panhellenic Conference Unanimous Agreements.
Leave the Potential New Member with a positive idea of what sisterhood could be. Encourage the Potential New Member to explore the freedom of thought in her decisions. Assure the Potential New Member about the recruitment process, membership requirements, and external and internal responsibilities. Enable every Potential New Member an equal opportunity to a level playing field. Strive to maintain a campus scholastic average that is above the all-women's average. RECRUITMENT GUIDE 2019

ACADEMIC
OBLIGATIONS
M. R. A. B. A.
A specific GPA is not required to register and participate in the Panhellenic formal recruitment process. However, each sorority has a grade point average requirement specific to their organization standards. Typically the average to extend a membership invitation is a 3.00 grade point average. Academic performance is a standard within the fraternity/sorority community; therefore, grade point averages are a significant factor in the membership selection process. The scale below is provided to help explain how academics may affect participation in formal recruitment.
Green Zone (3.00+)
Yellow Zone (2.75-2.99)
Red Zone (2.74 & Below)
Your options are not likely to be limited based on GPA
Your options are more likely to be limited based on GPA
Your options are very likely to be limited based on GPA
FINANICAL
OBLIGATIONS
Membership is most expensive the first semester, so this is definitely something to think about when going through formal recruitment. Some chapters also require members to live in house for at least one year. A more detailed outline for each chapter can be found on our website under the Potential New Members tab. Dues will be required, so please review this prior to going through recruitment.

The document on the opposite page is the Membership Recruitment Acceptance Binding Agreement (MRABA), formerly known as the "Preference Card". The MRABA is a binding agreement that is effective for one calendar year. By signing this document, you as a Potential New Member agree that you are willing to accept a bid for membership form any sorority that you rank on the MRABA. Please note that if you receive an invitation to membership (a bid) from any sorority that you ranked on you MRABA, then you are bound to that group for one calendar year (August 2019August 2020). Most importantly, if you receive a bid from any sorority that you have listed on you MRABA and you choose not to accept it, you are not eligible to participate in Continuous Open Bidding (COB) in fall 2019 or spring 2020. If you receive invitations to Preference, at the conclusion of your last Preference party, you will make your final selections on a computer, ranking the chapters you visited on Friday, August 16 in preferential order. Once you complete your rankings, you will sign a copy of the MRABA. Please note that once the MRABA has been turned in to a representative of the Panhellenic Executive Council, it cannot be altered or changed.

By signing this acceptance agreement, I understand and agree to the following terms. Please read and initial each of the following: I am willing to accept an invitation to membership from any woman's sorority that I list on this agreement. I may limit my choices to just one OR list any woman's sorority whose preferenceround (last) event I attended, and from which I am willing to accept membership. I realize that by not listing the maximum number of events I attended, I may be limiting my potential to join any other NPC group during primary recruitment should I not be placed with my choices. Once I submit this agreement to the College Panhellenic Association, I cannot change the order of my preferences or add or delete a preference. If I do not receive an invitation to membership from a group that I have listed, I am eligible for continuous open bidding. Once I submit this agreement, I am bound by the National Panhellenic Conference Unanimous Agreements, which state that if I receive an invitation to membership from a group that I have listed and then do not accept it, I am ineligible to be pledged until the beginning of the next primary membership recruitment period on the same campus. Q: How do I get a recommendation letter?
A: Begin to ask around and contact people you know who were members of sororities: teachers, family members, neighbors, family friends, members of your church, etc. Let the woman know that you are participating in sorority recruitment at Mississippi State and that you would like them to write a letter of recommendation on your behalf. Each chapter requires at least 1 recommendation letter. If you are unable to find an alumna to write your recommendation letter the chapters should assist you in finding one.
Q: What is a legacy? Am I guaranteed a bid if I am a legacy?
A: A legacy is typically a sister, daughter, or granddaughter of a sorority alumna. However, each chapter has different requirements for considering a potential new member a legacy. No one is ever guaranteed a bid to a sorority. Each sorority has different policies on legacies. Ultimately, it is the individual potential new member’s personality, characters, resume, grades, etc. that are the main determining factors for membership selection.
| 37
Q: What happens on Bid Day?
A: On Bid Day, you will meet your Gamma Chi and the rest of your group in the Colvard Student Union Bill R. Foster Ballroom. You will get in a circle with your Gamma Chi group, with who you will have created lasting friendships throughout the week, and your gamma Chi will hand each of you an envelope containing your bid. Everyone will open their bid cards at the same time, you may even find that some of the other women in your Gamma Chi group received a bid from the same sorority as you! Then, everyone will walk to the amphitheater where you will run to join your new sisters! Your parents are welcome to join us at the amphitheater for bid day festivities. Each chapter plans their own bid day theme and has activities for the potential new members to take part in that day. An older, active member of the chapter will be your bid day buddy. The parents will be given wrist bands to have access to sorority row that day, due to overcrowding in previous years.
Q: How much time does a sorority take?
A: Every chapter has a required weekly meeting where you will receive information on chapter events. Weekly study hall hours, sisterhood activities, community service projects, and social events are also potential time commitments. But, a sorority can take as much or as little of your time as you want it to.
Q: I’m visiting Mississippi State this summer, can I tour the houses?
A: Each chapter will have a table set up at the Organization Fair during the Orientations this summer and will be happy to answer any questions you have regarding recruitment. Sorority houses are closed during the summer, so tours are not available. But, you will receive tours of the sorority houses throughout recruitment!
Q: The answer to my question isn’t in this packet, who can I A: We are happy to help answer any questions you ask? may have! You may contact the following people regarding recruitment questions: Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life 662-325-3917 Addie Melchior, Director of Recruitment msupanrecruitment@gmail.com Rachel Dumke, President mstatepanhellenicpresident@gmail.com
Q: Is Mississippi State Panhellenic on Social Media?
A: Yes! And we would love to keep in touch with you that way! Website: www.greeks.msstate.edu Facebook: Mississippi State Panhellenic Instagram: @msu_panhellenic Twitter: @msupanhellenic
Q: Do I have to live in the sorority house?
A: You are required by Mississippi State to live in the residence halls your freshman year. Each sorority has their own policy regarding living in the chapter house. Some sororities require members to live in the house for one school year. Hathorn Hall is also an option for sorority women after their freshman year. Most chapters have a floor in Hathorn where women of that chapter can live together if there is not enough space in their chapter house.
Q: Can I eat at the sorority house once I join?
A: Yes. If you join a sorority that offers a meal plan, Mississippi State allows you to change from the Unlimited Meal Plan to the Greek Meal Plan. The Greek Meal Plan is slightly less expensive than the other meal plans because you will also be paying for a meal plan within your chapter. Once you join a sorority, you can contact Dining Services by visiting their office located in between Moe’s and Subway to change your meal plan. Your meal plan will not change unless you contact Dining Services in person to change it.
Q: How much does it cost to be in a sorority?
A: Please visit the Panhellenic website at www.greeks.msstate.edu for the most up to date information on fee structures for each chapter.
