What organizations are at MSU? Sorority: Delta Xi Phi Multicultural Sorority Fraternity: Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity, Inc. What is MGC?
The Multicultural Greek Council at Mississippi State University recognizes the need for coordination and cooperation in activities of intercollegiate Greek-letter organizations. With this, the Multicultural Greek Council serves as a formal organization to establish rules and regulations, guidelines, and provisions for all organizations involved. The primary purpose of the MGC is to unite its member organizations in order to share ideas and resources, promote mutual respect and equality, and provide a support network for involved students.
What is Membership Intake?
MGC organizations use variations of a process known as membership intake to gain new members. Each organization will decide when it will host an intake process. This is typically once every calendar year. The organization will post flyers and other forms of notification advertising the interest meeting or rush. Flyers are posted in the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life at least 2 weeks prior to the process or interest meeting. These processes are discrete. Therefore, you will be informed of the timeline of the process, if you are selected for membership.

What is NPHC?
The National Pan-Hellenic Council, Incorporated (NPHC) represents the 9 historically Black Greek-letter fraternities and sororities, also referred to as the Divine Nine. NPHC promotes interaction through forums, meetings and other mediums for the exchange of information and engages in cooperative programming and initiatives through various activities and functions.

When is recruitment week?
Recruitment Dates: August 10-15, 2020 Recruitment week is August 10-15, however there is a MANDATORY Recruitment Orientation for the women going through recruitment on Sunday, August 9 in the Colvard Student Union Bill R. Foster Ballroom. The potential new members will receive a phone call from their Gamma Chi (recruitment counselor) before the Orientation. There is also an optional Parent Orientation on Sunday, August 9 in Bettersworth Auditrioum located in Lee Hall.
Will I receive anything in the mail about recruitment?
For information regarding Panhellenic Fall Recruitment, please visit our website at www.greeks.msstate.edu. It includes a detailed schedule of the events for the week, pictures of what to wear for each day, individual chapter information, and advice for recruitment week. What is the schedule like for recruitment week?
Sunday, August 9 – Panhellenic Sorority Recruitment Move-In/Parent Orientation and Mandatory Student Orientation -Monday, August 10 – Go Greek Day 1 -Tuesday, August 11 – Go Greek Day 2 -Wednesday, August 12 – Philanthropy Day -Thursday, August 13 – Sisterhood Day -Friday, August 14 – Preference Day/Night -Saturday, August 15 – Bid Day Plan on devoting this entire week to recruitment activities. You will receive a schedule each morning starting Monday, August 10 until Friday, August 14 with your designated parties on it. *If you are participating in New Maroon Camp, we will accommodate your schedule to allow you to participate in NMC activities*
How do I register?
Registration for recruitment begins June 1st and goes through July 31st. No applications will be accepted after July 31st at 11:59 pm. You must be registered and paid at this time to participate in sorority recruitment. What does the fee for recruitment go to? The recruitment fee is $115 until June 31st and $150 starting July 1st. This fee includes t- shirts for the first four days of recruitment, snacks during the days of recruitment, and the general registration fee. How do I know my registration is complete? After you register online, you will receive a confirmation email. If you do not receive a confirmation email, please contact the Director of Recruitment, Lindsey Jenkins, at panrecruitment@saffairs.msstate. edu.
What is a legacy?
A legacy is typically a sister, daughter, or granddaughter of a sorority alumna. However, each chapter has different requirements for considering a potential new member a legacy. Am I guaranteed a bid if I am a legacy? No, no one is ever guaranteed a bid to a sorority. Each sorority has different policies on legacies. Ultimately, it is the individual potential new member’s personality, characters, resume, grades, etc. that are the main determining factors for membership selection.

What happens on Bid Day?
On Bid Day, you will meet your Gamma Chi and the rest of your group in the Colvard Student Union Bill R. Foster Ballroom. You will get in a circle with your Gamma Chi group, with who you will have created lasting friendships throughout the week, and your gamma Chi will hand each of you an envelope containing your bid. Everyone will open their bid cards at the same time, you may even find that some of the other women in your Gamma Chi group received a bid from the same sorority as you! Then, everyone will walk to the amphitheater where you will run to join your new sisters! Your parents are welcome to join us at the amphitheater for bid day festivities. Each chapter plans their own bid day theme and has activities for the potential new members to take part in that day. An older, active member of the chapter will be your bid day buddy. The parents will be given wrist bands to have access to sorority row that day, due to overcrowding in previous years.
What is sorority life like after recruitment?
How much time does a sorority take? Every chapter has a required weekly meeting where you will receive information on chapter events. Weekly study hall hours, sisterhood activities, community service projects, and social events are also potential time commitments. But, a sorority can take as much or as little of your time as you want it to. Do I have to live in the sorority house? You are required by Mississippi State to live in the residence halls your freshman year. Each sorority has their own policy regarding living in the chapter house. Some sororities require members to live in the house
for one school year. Hathorn Hall is also an option for sorority women after their freshman year. Most chapters have a floor in Hathorn where women of that chapter can live together if there is not enough space in their chapter house. Can I eat at the sorority house once I join? Yes. If you join a sorority that offers a meal plan, Mississippi State allows you to change from the Unlimited Meal Plan to the Greek Meal Plan. The Greek Meal Plan is slightly less expensive than the other meal plans because you will also be paying for a meal plan within your chapter. Once you join a sorority, you can contact Dining Services by visiting their office located in between Moe’s and Subway to change your meal plan. Your meal plan will not change unless you contact Dining Services in person to change it. How much does it cost to be in a sorority? Please visit the Panhellenic website at www.greeks.msstate.edu for the most up to date information on fee structures for each chapter. I’m visiting Mississippi State this summer, can I tour the houses? Each chapter will have a table set up at the Organization Fair during the Orientations this summer and will be happy to answer any questions you have regarding recruitment. Sorority houses are closed during the summer, so tours are not available. But, you will receive tours of the sorority houses throughout recruitment!

COMMITMENT FROM COUNCIL LEADERSHIP Dear Mississippi State University Fraternity and Sorority Community, We are excited to have you on campus! We are looking forward to a great year. Our four councils work hard throughout the summer to prepare great initiatives, events, and recruitment/intake processes. As we begin the process of inviting new members into our community, we want to take the opportunity to draw attention to important issues we face in fraternity and sorority communities at Mississippi State and across the country. It is important we foster an environment where students are treated with respect in both fraternities and sororities and the greater MSU family. As members of Greek-lettered organizations, we must ensure hazing and/or other high-risk behavior, such as excessive drinking, are not present in our organizations. We must hold each other accountable for inappropriate behavior by reporting incidents and intervening in risky situations. We ask that you make time to review the MSU Hazing Policy. Hazing is against the law in the state of Mississippi as well as a violation of the student code of conduct at Mississippi State University. The Fraternity and Sorority Life staff visit chapters and chapter leadership throughout the year to discuss issues that are affecting our community. Fraternity and Sorority Life staff is available at any time to assist you throughout your fraternity or sorority experience. Staff work to ensure that chapters are operating within MSU policy and new members have a meaningful and beneficial experience as they join our fraternity and sorority community. To reiterate, one of the most effective ways you can improve our fraternity and sorority community is by alerting appropriate parties when you see risky behavior. You can report an incident of concern by visiting the Fraternity & Sorority Life website at www.greeks.msstate.edu and click “Report a Fraternity and Sorority Concern�. One of the worst things you can do as a member is not step into a situation where you know someone is being hurt or treated inappropriately.
