Make Up Artist
rlando, this week I welcome you to the world of an MUA (Make Up Artist). MUA’s are the artists who use make-up for “paint” and faces are their “canvases” to enhance the beauty of the world. One of the most charming and talented individuals I have had the pleasure to meet, hails all the way from Kansas City, MO and she left quite an impression on more than those faces in the photos… Please show your love to Alecia Renee!
As an MUA, where do you find your inspiration? I find inspiration all around me. I find it from nature, songs, and my environment. I feed off my environment at the time of creation. You have to allow yourself to open up your mind & be receptive to all kinds of ideas. You have to allow yourself to create something different. Don’t get “stuck” in one way or method. How did you get started? Where did the interest come from? I have always enjoyed doing my own makeup. About 3 years ago I had a friend call me the day of her wedding because her MUA canceled to help her out. So I did the whole wedding party’s makeup. After that wedding I started booking wedding parties consistently from referrals. It just seemed too snowball from there and my business has grown ever since from word of mouth recommendations. What was your favorite photo shoot/MUA concept to create? I always have fun on all of my shoots, but the best experience was when I got to go to Las Vegas this past February. I had 4 shoots back to back, (a “shot –gun wedding” theme, a “James Bond” Wedding), I got to travel too & shoot at the Grand Canyon. I also got to learn in depth what a photographer is looking for when shooting. It helped make my style more precise. What’s your favorite aspect of your occupation? I really enjoy the reaction of a client that get’s to see themselves in a whole new light.
Such as a client that has never really worn make up before. Or a client that gain self confidence after a consultation. I like to make people feel better about themselves & get to see their beauty through another person’s eyes. What other projects are close to your heart? I was working/volunteering with “Help Portraits” that works with the Coalition for the Homeless in Orlando last year. Every year they donate clothing, photos & make-over services to the participants of the program. They give the women new clothing and a make-over for their own photo shoot. Then the portfolio of pictures is given to the women as a Christmas gift. My favorite subject was a single mom of 4 children, 3 boys & one girl. While I did her make-up her children were fascinated & consistently told her she was beautiful. During the process she negated what her children were saying. But at the end, with the reveal she got to see what her children saw. Her beauty and strength reflected in the mirror & their faces. I had to do her make up twice because we both shed tears. (Smiles) It is really rewarding to help others see their own beauty. You obviously do a lot of weddings, what other types of MUA jobs have you done? I have done charity events, music videos, fashion shows, personal photo shoots and parties. I’m a free lance MUA so I go wherever the jobs take me.
Are most of your business interactions coming from referrals? Actually most of my business comes from personal references from one client to another. What would you suggest to an up and coming MUA trying to get into the business? Practice, Practice, Practice. Don’t get caught up on name brands! Use what works best for you & your clients. Personality is a MUST! Hone your craft, study up on many different styles and techniques to makeup application. Study just as you would for any other profession. Networking is a huge key to progress & don’t let yourself be boxed in by other’s opinions. Follow your gut & not what others say you “should” or “shouldn’t” do. Are there any particular products that you prefer to use or products that you recommend? I try not to stick with any one product. Each situation/client is different. What may work for one, may not work for another. What do you feel is the biggest misconception about make-up is? One is that make up makes the person beautiful, when in reality make-up only enhances the beauty that already exists. And spending more money on high-end products does not always give you better results. I am very budget conscious. Some things you have to splurge for, but a lot you can use more cost efficient products and can get the same, If not better results than high end brands. Where can Orlando see examples of your work? Or reach you? Check out my website www.aleciarenee.com email me @ info@aleciarenee.com or contact me through face book. Shout Outs I would like to thank all the models & photographers that have trusted to bring me in on their projects. All the brides that have let me be a part of their special day. I am humbles by the opportunity to serve all of them & to contribute to the overall success of the projects & events.
