2020 WOMEN OF DISTINCTION PROGRAM

Each year since 2011, the MAC has honored seven local women who have been boundless in business, civic engagement and philanthropic programs by demonstrating excellence, growth, grit and empathy. The honorees this year were Christine Candio, former FACHE President and CEO of St. Luke’s Hospital; Theresa Carrington, CEO of Ten by Three, international speaker, author and mentor; Kate Ewing, director of strategic business development and marketing at Sandberg Phoenix; Mary Elizabeth Grimes, president of Marian Middle School; Genny Jessee, executive director of the June Jessee Memorial Foundation; Katy Vu, Senior VP, CFO of Bunzl; and Rising Star Katie Shields, head women’s soccer coach at Saint Louis University.

In 2020, MAC continued the tradition, albeit with a new spin. To help with social distancing and capacity regulations, the Women's Initiative Group decided to host a hybrid event, with many attendees viewing the event online, while honorees and their guests attended the event in person. On Friday, Oct. 9, all attendees heard each of the awardee's stories as well as a question and answer portion moderated by WIG chairperson, Jodi Petersen. Despite the challenges of hosting this event online and in-person, attendees from both complimented the Club on this year's production.

Countdown to the Top 50 Sports Personalities OF THE PAST HALF-CENTURY

TUESDAY, DEC. 8

The 2020 Jack Buck Sports Awards, presented by Redbird Carriers, will take place on Tuesday, Dec. 8. Follow MAC emails and social media for further details.

This year has been unlike any other in sports history, with abbreviated seasons and teams playing in empty venues. For the 2020 Sports Personality of the Year, the MAC takes a look back and celebrating the 50 years of the award. In 1970, Missouri Athletic Club Member Jack Buck established the Sports Personality of the Year Award to annually honor the top figure in St. Louis. For a half-century, beginning with Bob Gibson winning the inaugural award and through the most recent honoree Craig Berube in 2019, an impressive list of Hall of Famers, star players and coaching legends have received the prestigious trophy at the MAC’s Jack Buck Awards Banquet. Previously, only Members of the MAC had been eligible to vote for the Sports Personality of the Year Award. But to commemorate the golden anniversary of the award, voting opened to all St. Louis sports fans this year. They had the opportunity to vote for the top 50 St. Louis Sports Personalities of the past 50 years (1970-2020). Online voting concluded Friday, Oct. 30. On Dec. 8, the results of the Top 50 will be revealed through a countdown at the Jack Buck Sports Awards banquet presented by Redbird Carriers. The show will air live on KMOX Radio and will be recorded for a show on FoxSports Midwest. For more on the history of the Missouri Athletic Club’s Sports Personality of the Year Award and a complete list of past winners, visit our website. This event always sells out early, so be on the lookout for more information in the MAC’s emails or on social media.

HONOR VETERANS this Veterans Day

Join the MAC and St. Louis Rotary Club for the annual Veterans Day commemoration at this year's virtual event and honor all those who have served our country, especially those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.

VETERAN OF THE YEAR, FIRST LIEUTENANT JOHN J. GLENN, JR., USMC John was born and raised in the Greater St. Louis area and grew up living in public housing. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, which encompassed more than 21 years of active service and included a combat tour of duty in Vietnam. First Lt. Particularly noteworthy was his meritorious selection for Gunnery Sergeant in eight years of service while serving as a recruiter. His military awards include the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal (Combat V), Combat Action Ribbon and numerous other personal and unit awards.

VETERAN OF ACHIEVEMENT, RUSSELL WHITENER Russell Whitener was then drafted into the U.S. Army in 1968. On one occasion, Whitener's M110 struck a land mine destroying his gun and wounding a gun crewmember. His tour of duty ended in October 1970 and he returned home accompanied by a Bronze Star. He was soon back in uniform as a St. Louis Police Officer. He was eventually transferred to the 1st District Detective Bureau where he primarily worked armed robbery cases.

LIFETIME DEDICATION, COLONEL CORINNE E. BARDGETT After completing her Basic Officer Course, Col. Corinne E. Bardgett was assigned to the 424th Chemical Detachment. Several weeks later, Croak held the important task of manning the anchor of LCI 491 at Omaha Beach during D-Day. He and his crew held the task of transporting the Army’s second division away from the beach. Following the events of D-Day, Croak joined the invasion of Japan. “The Missouri Athletic Club and the Rotary Club of St. Louis sponsor the Veterans Day Commemoration and awards luncheon. The POW/MIA ceremony and the stirring speeches from key military leaders provide a solemn and emotional backdrop honoring and thanking our Veteran community for their service and sacrifice. For me, it is a day to remember past missions, exploits, and comrades as we went about the nation’s business because the Veterans’ courage, selfless service, patriotism and commitment serve as a rallying cry for future generations and inspires us to renew our patriotic spirit. It is a day when I rededicate myself to assisting the Veteran community because we, as senior leaders, never really stop serving.” — MAC Governor Tracy Beckette Brigadier General (R), AUS Civilian Aide to the Secretary of the Army (CASA), Missouri (East)

MAC EMPLOYEE Holiday Fund

The holiday season is fast approaching, which prompts us to reflect on the outstanding year of events and accomplishments that we have enjoyed. None of these events would have been possible without the diligent work throughout the year of our wonderful staff. We see them every day, or if we don’t see them, we see the effects of their work in the locker rooms, the kitchen, the basement laundry room and engineering offices. Our hardworking staff is what keeps both clubhouses running smoothly. Annually, the Employee Holiday Fund extends a holiday bonus to the MAC staff and supports the MAC’s charitable entities. The MAC’s employees are always incredibly thankful to the Club’s membership for this outpouring of appreciation, and a small portion of the funds are allocated to the Preservation Foundation and the CSC and used to carry on the Club’s values of tradition, community and culture.

On your Oct. 31, 2020 statement (both paper and digital), please notice a Voluntary contribution charge in the amount of $100 shown as “Empl Holiday/Foundations Cont.”

The funds will be allocated as shown unless you notify the accounting office otherwise. F $95 Employee Holiday Fund F $2.50 Preservation Foundation (tax deductible) F $2.50 MAC Charitable Society for

TRUNK-RTreat

Despite the complications that surround trick-or-treating during this time, Members and their children were able to participate in the MAC's Trunk-R-Treat event on Saturday, Oct. 24 in the West Clubhouse parking lot.

Parents mingled while their little princesses, superheroes, creepy creatures and more went from one decorated car to another gathering the tastiest goodies to add to their Halloween baskets. To help prevent the spreading of the virus, people who participated in the event were asked to individually wrap goody bags for the trunk-or-treaters. Families even brought their dogs to join in the fun, making the day extra special.

ORIENTATION TO CLUB GOVERNANCE

On Tuesday, Oct. 20, Club Members who were either thinking about getting involved in Club leadership or those already involved gathered at the West Clubhouse at 5:30 p.m. This special open house gave Members who wanted to learn more about service on one of the Club's five official committees and the Board of Governors a chance to ask questions and mingle with Members who already are a part of these groups. This event included light refreshments as well as hors d'oeuvres for event attendees.
