Lake, just a few miles outside of Grant City on Highway W. Or stay in Grant City and dive into the Grant City Pool, open Memorial Day to Labor Day. Take Route 46 east out of Grant City to Allendale, where you’ll connect to Route C south. Just when you start thinking this is the straightest road you’ve ever been on, it’ll throw you a couple of sharp turns that take you to the banks of East Fork Grand River. Follow Route C into Albany and sit down for a slice of pie at Poppa’s Family Restaurant. Take Highway 136 west out of Albany to the town of Stanberry. Highway 136 turns west on West Fourth Street and twists north and west to the town of Conception, where it turns back to the north. At Ravenwood, the highway turns back west, over the Platte River and into Maryville. Grab a brew and listen to some live music at The Pub. Or have a burger and watch the game at Carson’s Sports Grille.

CITY OF MARYVILLE

YOU WON’T NEED SNOWSHOES for this route, unless you go in the dead of winter. Then, we make no guarantees. This route resides in the extreme northwest portion of the state—ergo its name—and nearly kisses the Missouri-Iowa border at its northernmost point. Start in Maryville, the seat of Nodaway County and home of Northwest Missouri State University. You’re going to end here, too, so we’ll tell you about all the hot spots in a bit. From Maryville, head north on Route 148. It’s a fairly straight ride through the Missouri prairie. You might find yourself channeling the spirits of the American Indians who once rode horseback through this land. At Hopkins, turn east on Route 246. It’ll cut sharply south before turning back east just before Sheridan. If you enjoy a road with more turns, you’re about to get your wish. At Grant City, take a minute to cool your toes in Worth County

Take Highway 136 east out of Bethany. Watch out when you approach Ravanna. The town’s first well has been preserved in its original location—the middle of the highway. Past Unionville, the route takes a sharp southern tack onto Route 149. South of Martinsville, don’t let the scenic terrain distract you from the tight turns in the road. Just past Novinger, turn east onto Route 6, and follow the scenic road over the Chariton River into Kirksville.

THE BATTLE OF KIRKSVILLE was fought in August 1862. Casualties ran high for Confederate troops in this picturesque town near the Missouri-Iowa border. Your trip should be much more peaceful. The one-way route to Kirksville starts at Bethany, the seat of Harrison County, and goes through Princeton—birthplace of Martha “Calamity Jane” Cannary—and on to Ravanna, Unionville, and Novinger before crossing over the Chariton River and heading into Kirksville.

GET YOUR MOTOR RUNNIN’ at the Harley-Davidson® Vehicle and Powertrain Operations Center, north of Kansas City. From the factory, take North Congress Avenue south to Northwest Prairie View Road. Turn left onto Prairie View Road and go southeast to Worth Harley-Davidson®. From Worth Harley-Davidson®, proceed south and west on Northwest Prairie View Road to Route 152 and turn east. Continue on Route 152 east to Highway 169, and turn south toward Kansas City. Take the John Jordan “Buck” O’Neil Memorial Bridge over the Missouri River. Continue south on Highway 169, which becomes Broadway Street as it crosses Interstate 70. At Twelfth Street, turn east and go four blocks to Main Street. Turn back south on Main Street and continue to West Pershing Road. Turn right and then a quick left on Kessler Road. This will take you to the National World War I Museum and Memorial. Continue south on Kessler Road, through Penn Valley Park. At Wyandotte Street, go south to West Twenty-Ninth Street and turn right to rejoin Broadway Street going south. J.C. Nichols Parkway and then merges into Ward Parkway at Brush Creek. At West Sixty-Third Street, turn west and continue to State Line Drive. As you turn south to get on State Line Drive, you’ll actually be in Kansas. Continue south until you get to Route 150, then turn east. At Interstate 49, you’ll see Gail’s Harley-Davidson®. Back on Route 150, continue east to Route 7. Turn north and follow the highway to Northwest Jefferson Street. Turn west and mirror Interstate 70 to Blue Springs Harley-Davidson®. Take Northwest Jefferson Street west to Northwest R. D. Mize Road. Follow it northwest until it merges with East Thirty-Ninth Street and continue traveling west. At Route 291, turn north. Stay on Route 291 to Highway 169, then turn north. Follow Highway 169 through Smithville and on to St. Joe Harley-Davidson®. After your visit, go south on Route A until it merges with Route 371 and continue south to Route U. Turn east on Route U, stay on it when it becomes Route E, and follow Route E east to Interurban Road. Turn south on Interurban Road and follow it back to your starting point.

You’ll travel southeast for about eighteen miles. Turn east onto Route 116 for another eighteen miles. Turn north on Highway 69. Alongside Interstate 35, you’ll pass Wallace State Park and drive through Cameron and Winston. Highway 69 makes a sharp left on the other side of Winston. If you get to Altamont, you missed it. THE FIRST WESTBOUND RIDER on the Pony Express left St. Joseph at 5 PM on April 3, 1860, to travel through Kansas and what is now known as Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Utah, and Nevada to arrive in Sacramento, California, ten days later. Your Pony Express ride won’t be quite that extensive or time-consuming, but you’ll enjoy a lot of history. The Pony Express National Museum is a great place to start before you saddle up to start your ride on Highway 169. Take Highway 169 east out of St. Joseph.

around one of the city’s many festivals and fairs. Continue east on Highway 24 to the town of Waverly, where Peters Orchards and Market serves healthy snacks and offers seasonal tours of the orchards. Stay on Highway 24 as it joins Highway 65, and head north to cross the Missouri and ride straight into Carrollton. Refuel your bike at your choice of gas stations, refuel your body at one of many dining establishments, and refuel your soul (and soles) by dangling your feet in the water at Carrollton Recreation Lake. Look for Route 10 just before you reach the center of town, and go west through Missouri farmland. That will take you to Route 210 and back to Independence. However, you can stay on Route 10 for an alternate adventure through Richmond and on to Excelsior Springs. It adds a few more miles to the tour, but it’s worth it for a stop at the Broadway Bar & Grill or Ray’s Diner. Jump on Highway 69 to Route 291, and head south through Liberty and back to Independence. Or spend the night at the historic Elms Hotel in Excelsior Springs, and enjoy breakfast at 88 at The Elms before heading out in the morning.

EVERYTHING’S UP TO DATE in Kansas City. Well, that’s what we hear. If you were to go west from this route’s starting point, you’d end up in the heart and soul of Kansas City. No matter. We’re taking the road less traveled. Start at Ron’s Roadhouse in Independence, where you’re likely to meet fellow bikers, many of whom will be starting or completing this popular route. Look around Independence on your way out. There’s a lot of history in this town, including the 1859 Jail, Marshal’s Home & Museum. Independence is also the hometown of Missouri’s only president, Harry S. Truman. Take Highway 24 out of Independence, and head east along the Missouri River. Follow the highway through the river towns along the southern edge of the river for half of the 120-mile journey. Take time to explore historic downtown Lexington. The bloody Civil War Battle of Lexington took place here, and a state historic site commemorates that conflict. There’s always something going on in town and at its surrounding wineries. vehicles towing boats. After you cross the bridge, you’ll pass the Smoke & Davey Trailhead, home of some of the best bicycle trails around. Take Route J northeast to Route C south. Just past the fun curves, take Route W west to Kelli’s Korner in Paradise. After you gas up and grab a snack, head south on Collins Road to see more of the lake, such as Sailboat Cove, KC Trapshooters, and the Equestrian Trails. At the stop sign, turn left onto Route E and follow it south to Route 92. Take Route 92 west, to Route DD north, where you will see the Jerry Litton Visitor Center, a great place to explore the history of Smithville Lake. Just past the center, turn north on Litton Way and drive across the dam, where you’ll find parking on the far side for a great photo opportunity. Continue on Litton Way as it becomes Route F, which winds back south and west, taking you past Ladoga Ridge Winery, and down the hill to Bridge Street. Turn south across the bridge and enjoy the shops and restaurants of historic downtown Smithville.

THIS RIDE AROUND THE LAKE is a great way to see all Smithville has to offer in a little more than an hour. That leaves lots of time to kick back and relax along the route or to enjoy yourself when you reach your desired destination in the historic downtown district. Start your ride at Motorcycle Closeouts on Highway 169, just two miles north of Kansas City’s Interstate 435 loop. When you see the big blue Smithville water tower to the west, turn east on Amory Road to enter the parking lot. This is a great place to meet fellow riders and shop for riding gear and accessories. Saddle up and head north through Smithville on Highway 169. A few blocks past Smithville Marine, turn west on Route KK, and prepare to enjoy a nice ride through the country. Head north on curvy Route B to Ridgely and make a slight jog to the east before continuing north on Route B to Edgerton. Turn east on Route Z, then south on Highway 169. Head east on Route W and you’ll soon have a great view of Smithville Lake. Please watch for

Just north of the river, turn left onto State Spur C to go into the Union Covered Bridge State Historic Site. This is one of only four standing covered bridges in Missouri. Take State Spur C back to Route C and turn north. Follow Route C until you reach Highway 24. Take it east to reconnect to Route 15, where you’ll turn north and go through Paris, Missouri. Just north of Paris, turn east on Highway 24 again. At Route U, turn right and continue to the Mark Twain Birthplace Historic Site in Mark Twain State Park. Leaving the park, take Route 107 south to Route 154. Turn east on Route 154 and follow it to Route B at Perry. Turn south on Route B and continue to Route J. Turn west on Route J and follow it back into Mexico. When you end your excursion in Mexico, stay to enjoy the shopping and dining offerings. Whether it’s homemade barbecue, or an Aussie Outback and Down Under entrée, a hearty rib eye, tastes from the sea, a burger, specialty salad, Italian, Mexican, or fried chicken —Mexico has something to please all appetites. Stay at one of many hotels or bed-and-breakfasts before moving on to your next adventure.

WALK BACK IN TIME in Mexico, Missouri, when you travel this route on the last weekend in September. On the grounds of the Audrain Historical Museum Complex, you will be able to see and experience different time periods. Start with a Native American Village and the early Vikings in America. Then jump to the 1770s Colonial era. Visit with some 1830s Mountain Men, 1860 Pony Express riders, and 1860s Civil War soldiers. Move on to the 1880s Wild West, 1918 World War I, and 1920s Suffragettes, and finish with the 1940s World War II, the renowned Simmons Stables, and more. A tour of the nearby Graceland Historical Museum includes an interesting interpretation of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant’s stay at the Ross House and stories and items documenting the fame of both the “Saddle Horse” and “Firebrick” Capitals of the World, along with many other historic artifacts. Take Route 15 north from Mexico. At Route M, turn west and keep going to Route 819. Turn north and continue until the road ends at Route AA. Go west on Route AA to Route C and turn north to cross the Elk Fork of the Salt River.

THE REACHABLE STAR is just one possible destination at the far northeast corner of the state. The trail starts in Kirksville, nicknamed Missouri’s North Star, home to two universities and the site of a major battle in the American Civil War. Confederate soldiers executed in the city were buried in a mass grave at ForestLlewellyn Cemetery, just a few blocks west of Kirksville’s Square. you back to Route A. If you’ve had enough adventure, take Route A back to New London, where you can head back to Hannibal on Highway 61. If you’re hungry for more, turn back down Route J to Perry. This time, head east on Route 154 to Route 19, then south to rejoin Route 154 east. Route 154 becomes Highway 54. Follow it all the way to Louisiana, Missouri, to complete the second loop. From Louisiana, return to Hannibal on the Great River Road (Route 79) or finish the last loop. Take Highway 54 back to Business 61 and turn south into Bowling Green. Catch Route 161 and follow it to Ashley. Turn left onto Route Z and take it to Highway 61. Turn south on Highway 61 briefly to Route F. Turn east on Route F to Route CC. Follow Route CC until it ends at Route 79, then turn south to Elsberry and you’ve completed your own Mark Twain Adventure. Enjoy the scenic ride back to Hannibal on the Great River Road.

TWO HUNDRED PLUS miles makes this one of the longer routes, but you can break it into multiple shorter trips, because you’re going to want to come back to Hannibal again. Take Route 79 south out of Hannibal. Turn right on Route N at Saverton and continue straight onto Route T. Turn left on Route T, and then turn right onto Route V into New London. Turn right at Main Street to First Street. Turn left on First Street, which becomes Route A as it leaves New London. Take Route A west and catch Route J north to Route W, then turn west on Route W toward Monroe City. At Highway 24, turn south and follow it to the fork at Route 107. Turn left and go to Florida, Missouri, birthplace of Mark Twain and home of the state park named for him. Continue south on Route 107 to Route 154 and turn east toward Perry. For a better tour of the lake, turn back north on Route J at Perry. Sweeping turns will take you to the Clarence Cannon Dam. Continuing on Route J will bring

before or after your ride. Visit the third weekend in October for the Folklife Festival. Hannibal is best known as the boyhood home of Mark Twain and the inspiration behind such literary creations as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. You’ll take Route 79 all the way on this trip, beginning in Hannibal and ending in Clarksville. About ten miles south of Hannibal, near the dam at Saverton, pause to look to the skies for the bald eagles that migrate to the high bluffs. Nearby Pike County to the south is one of the largest winter migration areas for bald eagles. Continue south on Route 79 to Louisiana, Missouri, home to what the Department of Natural Resources has called the most intact Victorian streetscape in the state. Downtown Louisiana is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Georgia Street Historical District, noteworthy for its antebellum homes. A walking tour is available for download at Louisiana-Mo.com. Stop near Clarksville at Lookout Point and Sky Lift Hill at Lock and Dam No. 24. This is one of the highest points along the river and offers an unmatched view of the Mississippi and the river valley.

THE GREAT RIVER ROAD National Scenic Byway is a chance to capture a bit of Americana right in your own backyard. With 2,069 miles running between Minnesota and Louisiana—hugging the Mississippi River all the way—the road is almost as mythical as its east-to-west cousin, Route 66. It has been called one of the greatest motorcycle routes in North America. This route offers a sampling of the road with a forty-three-mile adventure from Hannibal to Clarksville. Running along the eastern edge of Missouri’s Little Dixie region—so named by the area’s settlers who came from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Virginia—this portion of Route 79 is known as the Little Dixie Highway of the Great River Road. The Missouri Department of Conservation notes the area offers the most outstanding locale for nature tourism in the state. Local residents call the road from Hannibal to Clarksville the Fifty Miles of Art Corridor in recognition of the many fine artists, crafts people, and artisans who call the area home. EXPERIENCE OPEN PASTURES, rolling green hills, and prairies—all in Callaway County. Head east out of Fulton on Route O and catch Route D south to Portland. Holzhauser’s Bar & Grill is the first of many eateries as you turn west on Route 94, also known as the South Callaway Burger Trail. Turn north on Highway 54 to Holts Summit where you can take a break at Canterbury Hill Winery and Restaurant. From there, take Route AC north through the town of Lake Mykee and on to New Bloomfield where you’ll catch Route MM west to Route J. right and follow Route B across the Osage River to Upper Bottom Road. Turn right and follow the road to Route B in St. Thomas. Go north on Route B and rejoin the section of road you came in on, back over the river to Osage Bend Road, turning east and following the curves to Route W. Turn left on Route W, eventually cruising along beside the Osage River to the Pikes Camp Access, a conservation area. Continue on Route W to Route M in Wardsville. Turn east and follow Route M to cross over Highway 50, where it becomes Route J. Follow Route J to Algoa Road and proceed to Militia Drive. Take Militia Drive north, past No More Victims Road—which leads to the new Jefferson City Correctional Facility—and follow Militia Drive to the Museum of Missouri Military History. You can tour the museum, but be prepared to show your driver’s license or state ID to gain entry. After your visit, cross over Logistics Road to return south on Militia Drive, this time following it until you come to Highway 50. Take Highway 50 west back to Jefferson City. SURPRISING TWISTS AND TURNS along the hilly terrain of Cole County make up this route, a journey mimicking a prison escape attempt along backroads through hidden towns, then following the Osage River straight back to the old penitentiary! The ride begins on High Street in Jefferson City. Take Highway 50 west to the South Country Club Drive exit, veer right at the light, and then go south on Country Club Drive to Rainbow Drive. At Henwick Lane, head north to Binder Park for sights of waterfowl on the lake. Stay on Henwick Lane to Route T, and turn south. At St. Martins, Route T becomes Lomo Drive. Stay true on Lomo Drive, over Highway 50, until Lomo Drive turns into Route D. Stay on Route D through Lohman to Route C. Grab lunch at Steve’s Family Style Restaurant, specializing in pan-fried chicken and country ham, before heading west on C to Route AA. Enjoy the sweeping curves of Route AA until you come to Highway 54, where you’ll turn right onto Route E. Take Route E to Tanner Bridge Road and turn left. Follow Tanner Bridge Road to Honey Creek Road and turn right. At Route E, turn back north until the road dead-ends at Route B. Turn

the lake loop, look for Route Z, just south of the turn onto Route UU for the park. Turn west on Route Z and follow it until it comes to Route ZZ. Take Route ZZ south to Iconium, then Route U south to Route 82. At Harper, turn east onto Route 82 and follow the highway until it intersects with Route 83. Turn northeast on Route 83 and take it all the way back to Warsaw and Route 7 where you began. A great time to ride this loop is the third week of October, during Warsaw’s Pioneer Heritage Days, when you can experience the sights and sounds of the 1800s on Kaysinger Bluff at Harry S Truman Visitor Center. An October trip will not only let you take advantage of the festival, but also the spectacular Ozark fall colors. The entire loop is surrounded by state wildlife and conservation areas loaded with hiking trails, camping, and scenic views.

LOOP AROUND TRUMAN LAKE and enjoy the scenery. Truman Lake is a hot spot for tourists and locals alike—where you’ll find boating, camping, ATV riding, and fishing. Visit Drake Harbor, or stroll around the thriving lake town of Warsaw. And you’ll have plenty of chances to wade into the cool water at Truman Lake. Perched high on a bluff, the Truman Dam Visitor Center has a stunning view of the lake and dam as well as a wealth of natural history exhibits. Beginning in Warsaw, head west on Route 7 toward Clinton. Throughout the ride and especially in Harry S Truman State Park, a slight detour along Route UU, you’ll see western Ozark landscape: dry, open oak woodlands with bands of rocky prairies filled with abundant wildflowers and native grasses. HISTORIC MAIN STREET in St. Charles is your starting point for this route. After a few hours exploring Missouri’s oldest and largest historic district, get on your bike and take First Capitol Drive to hook up with Route 94. Once you cross over Interstate 64, you’ll pick up one of the state’s original highways, built in 1922, and known as the Missouri Weinstrasse. This section of Route 94 offers some of the most breathtaking views in the entire state. You’ll take in the sweeping vistas of the Missouri River valley and the Osage Ridge with its tree-covered slopes. This region has made wine the center of the community landscape. lunch. Or pack a basket and picnic lakeside. At Versailles, turn east onto Route W to begin your southward trek back to the lake. Take your time. There’s a lot to enjoy in the hills and turns before arriving at Bagnell Dam at the northeast corner of the lake. Cruise down the Strip and take some pictures of the newly restored Indian Chief statue. The huge fiberglass statue has been standing on the Bagnell Strip for fifty years and is a part of the highway advertising icons known collectively as Muffler Men. Once you link up to Business 54, you’ll find countless restaurants and bars, many with outdoor seating and live music, so you can extend your day long into the Missouri night.

THE LAKE OF THE OZARKS is a biker’s paradise. Just ask anyone who has attended the annual BikeFest, where more than two hundred bars and restaurants offer up more than fifty live music venues. Whether you’re in town in September for the BikeFest, or you just want to enjoy the scenic winding roads of this eighty-two-mile route from Camdenton to Versailles, you’ll find plenty of places to rest, relax, and enjoy a good meal. You’ll want to start early. From Camdenton, head north on Route 5. This is the “wow” side of the lake, with lots of places where you’ll want to pull over and take pictures. Don’t worry, there are plenty of places to stop for

the Missouri River as you ride to the historic German city of Hermann. Once in Hermann, make sure to stop at the Hermann Wurst Haus for world-class bratwurst and sausages. Just down the street, explore the stone wine cellars and sample the wares at Hermannhof Winery. You can spend an hour or days enjoying Hermann’s old-world German hospitality. After you’ve checked out Hermann, head back west on Route 94 toward Jefferson City. If you’re in need of a break, Mokane Bar & Grill is a great stop for some of the best burgers in the area. Once you make it to Jefferson City, you’ll want to visit the museum inside the State Capitol and the bars and eateries in the city’s downtown area. When you’re ready, head north on Highway 63 and stop back by Mid America Harley-Davidson to see old friends or meet new ones.

THE SHORTCUT: Turn west on Route 240 and cross the Missouri River at Glasgow. You’ll connect with Route 41 just northwest of Arrow Rock. THE SCENIC ROUTE: Take Route 3 off Route 240, and proceed due north through Armstrong to Roanoke, where you’ll connect with Route 129. Take Route 129 to Salisbury, turn west onto Highway 24, and enjoy the ride to the Grand River. [ 52 ] 2017 Missouri Motorcycle Guide

At De Witt, turn south on Route 41. You’ll go over the Missouri River at Miami, Missouri, then straight south about fifteen miles to Marshall. Route 41 turns back east just outside of the Marshall city limits. If you have friends who took the shortcut, you’ll catch them here and ride into the beautiful village of Arrow Rock, where the entire town is on the National Register of Historic Places. If you’ve timed it right, you might be able to catch a play at the Lyceum Theatre, one of Missouri’s oldest professional regional theaters. Turn south onto Santa Fe Road (Route 41), through Blackwater, and on to Boonville, where you can try your luck at the Isle of Capri Casino. Take a side trip south on Main Street to Route 98 to cruise by Warm Springs Ranch, where the Budweiser Clydesdale horses are born and raised. Then retrace your route and go north on Main Street, over the Missouri River on the Boonslick Bridge and follow Highway 40 past New Franklin, Rocheport, and Midway. Connect with Interstate 70 for a short drive back to your starting point in Columbia.

THIS TRAIL offers a bit more flexibility than others. You can take the full 157-mile journey through beautiful mid-Missouri scenery, or you can take a shortcut across the Boonslick Loop. Head north out of Columbia on Route E (the Stadium Boulevard exit off Interstate 70) to the town of Harrisburg. Turn west onto Route 124, and follow it straight on to Route 240 just outside Fayette. Check out Hawgs and Heifers Bar. Back on Route 240, you’ll have about five miles to decide whether to take the shorter route or lock in the long haul.

Ha Ha Tonka State Park

THIS SCENIC LOOP starts and ends in Camdenton, but for a more fun experience, you might want to stop short of Camdenton at the Lake of the Ozarks, one of Missouri’s favorite summer vacation destinations. Take Highway 54 west out of Camdenton. You won’t get far before you come to Ha Ha Tonka State Park. It’s worth a brief detour on Route D to explore the ruins of a turn-of-thetwentieth-century castle built high on a bluff overlooking Ha Ha Tonka Spring. The park offers visitors boating, swimming, fishing, and hiking trails that lead to sinkholes and caves. The castle ruins are a short walk from the parking area. Back on Highway 54, continue west through Macks Creek. (Word of warning: keep an eye on the speedometer as you cruise through.) Speedway, a three-eighths-mile, semi-banked oval dirt track that is one of the country’s most highly regarded dirt-racing venues. Plan your trip ahead of time, and take in a race, or pitch a tent for free camping. Get information and race schedules at LucasOilSpeedway.com. Return to Highway 54 and go west to Route 83, where you’ll head north for a beautiful trip up to Truman Lake. Just south of Warsaw, you’ll catch Highway 65 for a short run that will connect you to Route 7, which heads back east through Edwards and Climax Springs. Be sure to check out Moonies Bar & Grill for a great time and good food. Or head for the waterfront and Sharkbite Bar & Grill. Follow Route 7 east until it connects with Route 5, and then take Route 5 south back into Camdenton.

If you’re ready for a break, Owensville boasts four parks within the city limits. From Owensville, catch Route 28 west through the towns of Canaan and Belle. South of Belle, veer right onto Route 42 and over the Gasconade River to Vienna. Continue on Route 42 west to Iberia. If you continue on Route 42, you’ll arrive at Osage Beach on the Lake of the Ozarks. For this MOMG route, turn right on Route 17 at Iberia and follow it to Tuscumbia. From the bridge going into Tuscumbia, you’ll get a beautiful view of the Osage River. If you want to go right down to the water, turn left at the three-way stop, and follow Route HH. Then head back over the river, this time connecting with Route 52 west, through St. Elizabeth to Meta, where you’ll connect with Route 133. Take Route 133 to Highway 63, and turn south to ride down the gently sloping hill into the beautiful German enclave of Westphalia. Continue south on Highway 63 to Route U. It’s a sharp left, and you’ll want to make sure the vehicles behind you are slowing down. Power through the curves through Rich Fountain and north back to Linn.

THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VIEW of the Osage River you’ll find without riding the river itself awaits you on this route. This roller coaster circuit—with twists and turns and hills throughout—takes you through Maries, Osage, Miller, and Gasconade Counties (MOMG), though not necessarily in that order. MOMG just looks so much better than GOMM. You can start this route from any number of towns along the way—Vienna, Iberia, Tuscumbia, Westphalia, Owensville—but for purposes of convenience, we’re starting at twelve o’clock and working our way clockwise. Feel free to improvise. You could just head east on Highway 50 out of Linn, but what fun would that be? Take Route 89 south for a scenic ride and a hairpin turn you won’t want to miss. At Route D, turn left for some more curves and turns along the bank of the Gasconade River. At Mount Sterling, jump back on Highway 50 for a few short miles to the junction of Routes K and P. Take Route P south, and look sharp for two ninety-degree turns—first right, then left—as you head down to Owensville.

Follow Route T north to Route 133 and chase the train’s whistle into Richland, where you catch Route 7 back to Route 66 and east, to Devils Elbow and her scenic bluffs and all-American 1923 steel bridge. three times. You’ll find out why as you head out of town on Route 64. Just twelve miles west of Lebanon, you’ll come upon Bennett Spring State Park, famous for its restful atmosphere, trout fishing, and stunning wildflowers. If you have the time, plan to picnic, camp, fish, and canoe on the tranquil waters of the Niangua River, which runs through the park. From Bennett Spring, follow Route 64 to Route K, which eventually turns into Route P after it crosses the Niangua River. Watch out for “peg scrapers” on this part of the route, as Routes K and P aren’t maintained as well as Route 64. Route P passes through the small towns of Windyville, Cedar Ridge, and Long Lane. Just south of Long Lane, you’ll catch Highway 32, which will take you back to Lebanon. The Bennett Spring Triangle is very popular with bikers and has been highlighted by MotorcycleRoads.com for its high elevation points and scenic views.

DON’T WORRY, you won’t disappear. Unlike the other famous triangle off the coast of Florida, no one has vanished while exploring this powerful attraction. Sure, some have wandered off course to chase an elusive trout or two. But they always come back. Eventually. The triangle begins in Lebanon, right off Interstate 44 at Exit 129. Lebanon is a hub for Route 66 enthusiasts, as the Mother Road used to run right through town. Check out the Route 66 Museum in the Lebanon-Laclede County Library, just a quarter mile from the interstate. If you time your visit right, you’ll get to enjoy one of the fairs or festivals for which Lebanon is known. You can check out the schedule at LebanonMissouri.com. And top off your tank before you leave town. As you continue on this route, gas stations get harder to find. Lebanon has made the list of Outdoor Life’s Top 200 Towns for Sportsmen, not once but

keep going straight. Route 76 becomes Route 112, and you’ll want to follow it all the way to Roaring River State Park, which has more than fifty picnic areas and two covered shelters complete with outdoor grills, picnic tables, and power outlets to recharge phones. Leaving Roaring River, stay on Route 112 for a few short miles until you reach Seligman. In Seligman, take Route 37 heading north to Washburn, then turn west on Route 90. This stretch of road should have enough turns and hills to hold your attention all the way through Noel to the junction of Route 43. Take Route 43 north to Loma Linda, where you’ll catch Route 86 for the ride back into Joplin. Plan on staying overnight in a bed-andbreakfast or one of two dozen hotels. Mother Road enthusiasts will definitely want to explore Joplin’s historic past along Route 66. The perfect Joplin experience would be to pair this route with the Route 66 Regatta on page 70 of this motorcycle guide.

THE ROLLING HILLS of the Ozarks result from the late Paleozoic geological time, when South America collided with North America and the existing deep ocean basin was uplifted to create the scenic Ozark Plateau. But you can forget the science. This is one fun ride. The Gateway to the Ozarks skirts the state borders of Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Kansas. From Joplin, head south on Business Route 49 to Neosho. Head to the north side of Pomme de Terre Lake for a great pork tenderloin at the 254 Café. Take Route 83 south to Route 254, then east to the café. Get back on Highway 54 at Hermitage and go east to the amazing Ha Ha Tonka State Park. Explore the castle ruins built on a bluff overlooking Ha Ha Tonka Spring, or walk the hiking trail from the bluff to the spring. Be sure to visit Bridal Cave, located just two miles north of Camdenton on Route 5. Check it out at BridalCave.com. Get back on Highway 54 east and follow it to Lake of the Ozarks Harley-Davidson. Stop in to see the restored gas station from a time when Route 66 was still “The Mother Road.” Continuing on Route 64 takes you through Lebanon’s bustling business district, past the Lebanon Country Club, and on into Bennett Spring State Park. Follow the winding turns of the road to Highway 65, and then turn north on Highway 65 toward Preston. Continue on Route 95 to the junction of Route 5. Turn right for a straight shot through Wasola and take a left on Route 95 when it resumes just north of Wasola. Route 95 ends at Highway 160. If you’re ready to call it quits, turn left and go back to Theodosia. Want more? Turn right on Highway 160 and head into the hills. At Rueter, turn north onto Route 125. Taking this route will bring you into the Hercules-Glade Wilderness Area. Proceed north on Route 125 to the junction of Route 76. Turn right on Route 76 through the mountains to the town of Ava. Catch Route 14 north-northwest through the Ozark foothills to Sparta. Take Route 125 south out of Sparta and roll through Oldfield, Chadwick, Garrison, and Bradleyville. On the other side of Bradleyville, you’ll cross Route 76 and re-trek some of the same road, this time going in the other direction. At Rueter, take Highway 160 east back into Theodosia and enjoy the real Ozarks.

WHERE IN THE HELL is Theodosia? Amid picturesque views and encircled by forest, lakes, rivers, and caves, Theodosia is nestled right in the heart of the Ozarks. Full of twists and turns, this route takes you on a journey like no other in an area rich with history, beauty, and amazing fishing. Theodosia lays claim to the most record bass in Missouri. Take Highway 160 east, over the amazing ten-span bridge crossing Bull Shoals Lake. Just east of Gainesville, take Route 181 north. While exploring the winding landscape along the highway, take the opportunity to experience a variety of unique stops throughout the area, including many mills where you can step into history. At the Caney Mountain Conservation Area, where the first wildlife management plan was designed, you’ll find abundant wildlife and a rugged landscape. On Route 181, north of Dora, catch Route 14 to its junction with Route 95 and turn left to go south.

the road merges with West Oak Street and continues on through the city. In keeping with the Route 66 theme, turn north onto Garrison Avenue and east onto East Central Avenue. Follow Route 96 out of Carthage, veering slightly left. It’s a straight shot with open roads to Route 39 and a loop around Stockton Lake. The lake is a popular destination for sailing. Located close to the northwestern edge of the Ozarks Plateau, where rugged Aux-Arcs hills give way to the Great Plains, it’s a windy, but gorgeous ride. Make a right onto Route 32 in Stockton. In Fair Play, turn right again onto Route 123, and continue to Walnut Grove. Take Route V to Ash Grove, and get on Route F. Follow Route F to Route 266, where you turn west to get back on Route 96 and head back to Joplin.

THE MOTHER ROAD passes through Joplin, Webb City, and Carthage and continues east all the way to Springfield. This well-traveled route is full of Historic Route 66 buildings and landmarks. Before you leave Joplin, be sure to check out all the new bikes at Hideout Harley-Davidson. You’ll always find someone ready to talk shop. Take Business Loop 49 north out of Joplin to Webb City. Turn east on Broadway Street, and follow it as it turns into Route HH, which leads you to East Main Street in Carterville. Turn north on North Pine Street and back east onto Old 66 Boulevard. Old 66 Boulevard crosses over Interstate 49, where it curves right along the outer road. You’ll pass the 66 Drive-In Theatre on your way into Carthage. Right after the drive-in,

Lakeside Grill & Lounge is a hot spot for bikers. Turn east on Route 86 at Blue Eye to go back to Highway 65 and Branson. The longer trip continues west on Route 248 to Galena. Consider a quick trip up Route 413 to Crane to visit its eclectic Main Street—a great place for lunch and browsing. To take the entire lake loop, follow Route 173 south from Elsey through Cape Fair and then go west on Route 76. Follow the hills and curves of Route 76 through Mark Twain National Forest until you reach Route 86. Follow Route 86 along the southern edge of Table Rock Lake, passing by Dogwood Canyon Nature Park, a good place to take a rest stop. Continue on Route 86 until it intersects with Highway 65 at Ridgedale. Big Cedar Lodge is located near this intersection. Follow Highway 65 north back into Branson.

A STONE’S THROW from Table Rock Lake—one of the most scenic lakes you’ll ever set eyes on—is Branson, a popular getaway for families, retirees, and bikers who make the annual pilgrimage to the Blues, Bikes and BBQ motorcycle rally in September in Fayetteville, Arkansas. This route runs straight through the heart of Branson, around Table Rock Lake, offering some of the most exhilarating twists and turns of the Ozark Mountains. It’s arguably the finest four-seasons motorcycle route in the state, with superb evening entertainment, too. Take Highway 65 north out of Branson for approximately ten miles. Turn west on Highway 160, and follow it to Route 248, near Reeds Spring junction. For a shorter trip, at Reeds Spring take Route 13 south from Reeds Spring through Kimberling City. The Rocks

Here you can take a shortcut by going north on Route 181 to Route 76 and following it to Willow Springs. Or stay the course on Highway 160 east to West Plains and then turn north on Highway 63. Either route will lead you to Highway 60 east of Willow Springs. Follow it east to Winona. At Winona, take Route 19 north, through Eminence, then go west on Route 106, through Alley Spring and Summersville. Route 106 ends at Route 17 in Summersville. Turn right on Route 17 to go north/northwest. Just south of Yukon, join Route 137 north to catch Route17 west at Yukon. Follow Route 17 through Houston and catch Route 32 just south of Success. This route begins at the beautiful White Buffalo Ranch and takes riders on a scenic trip through south-central Missouri. From the ranch, take United Drive north to Route AC and go east on Route AC to Route K. Take Route K south until it ends at Route 32. Take Route 32 east through the towns of Nebo and Lynchburg. At Lynchburg, take Route 95 south. You’ll cross Beaver Creek and go through Manes, Dawson, Mountain Grove, and Gentryville. If you’re looking for crystal clear waters and beautiful surroundings, turn north on Route N and follow the signs to Rockbridge Rainbow Trout Ranch, a hunting and fishing paradise. and bring your appetite. Sikeston is also the home of the Sikeston Bootheel Rodeo, which this year takes place August 9–12. Continue on to New Madrid and stop and explore the small museum that commemorates the 1811 earthquake and the famous fault line. The admission price includes a documentary on the 1811 quake as well as displays of American Indian artifacts. After exiting New Madrid, make a right onto Highway 62. It’s a straight, flat, open road until you reach Malden, where the route turns north following Route 25. Sixteen miles up the road in Dexter, Fiddlers Fish House is known for its spicy catfish and hush puppies. Learn about the history of our nation’s military newspaper at The Stars and Stripes Museum/Library in Bloomfield. Make a right turn in Dutchtown to get on Route 74, and take the leisurely trip north back to Cape Girardeau.

NOW FULL OF COTTON FIELDS, the Missouri Bootheel was once a vast swampland. Settlers cleared and converted the area over the years, and today it boasts some of the most productive and fertile land in the country. If you’re looking for a chance to explore the southeastern tip of Missouri, this tour is your best opportunity. This route is probably best taken during the harvest season when the crops are mature. Be aware of strong gusts of wind—and earthquakes. The Bootheel run passes through the port town of New Madrid, infamous for the New Madrid Fault and the earthquake that made the Mississippi River run backward in 1811. Chances are, you’ll be able to complete your trip without the earth moving. From Cape Girardeau, take Highway 61 south to Sikeston, best known for Lambert’s Cafe, “Home of Throwed Rolls.” If you’ve got the time, stop at this memorable restaurant

beautiful spots in Missouri: Maramec Spring Park. The park contains the fifth-largest spring in the state, and you can also camp and fish a stream that is stocked daily here. While in the St. James area, enjoy the “Little Italy of the Ozarks” and take in some of the best wine in the state at St. James Winery, Meramec Vineyards, or Three Squirrels Winery. If beer is more your style, Public House Brewing Company’s motto is “Stop in for a friend, a pint, and a session.” Head northwest on Route 68 through St. James and continue the scenic ride to the junction of Highway 63 at Vichy. Here you can head south on Highway 63 and take a shortcut back to Rolla or head north on Highway 63. Just about a five-mile ride northwest brings you to Route A, where you can turn back south and take the scenic route to Randy’s Roadkill BBQ & Grill. Don’t let the name put you off; it’s some of the best barbecue in the area. Randy’s provides a true country dining experience with a view to match.

HOMETOWN CHARM awaits you when you start this route at the lively Tater Patch in Rolla, where you’ll enjoy some of the best food and nightly entertainment that the Midwest has to offer! You can exit Bridge School Road onto Kingshighway and ride through the heart of Rolla on Historic Route 66. Head south on Highway 63 and then take the road less traveled, heading southeast on Route 72. Travel Route 72 to Rolla’s favorite swimming hole, The Fugitive Beach. The beach features a sixty-foot waterslide, fifteenand twenty-foot cliff jumps, and a beach bar and grill. After cooling off at the beach, it’s time to hit the road again. Travel Route 72 east-southeast until you reach the junction of Route FF. Follow Route FF east to Route 68, where you’ll turn north and enjoy the next twentytwo miles of rolling hills and farmland, with a few open-throttle straights. Make your way onto Route OO south to start this ride. Hit Route F and proceed for three miles before finding Twin Oaks, your first winery on the Route du Vin. Take Sand Creek Road to visit Sand Creek Winery, or branch off onto Laws Road, just a few minutes from Twin Oaks, to stop by Papa’s Vineyard. To continue the tour, get back on Route F traveling east. There are long, smooth curves on Route F, but once it merges with Route B, the curves are more pronounced. This leg of the trip will take you to the Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary, where you can tour the grounds and enjoy some delicious food. The sanctuary has a resort if you want to plan an exotic and luxurious retreat. Route B skirts Interstate 55 before hitting Route 32. Take a left on Route 32 to continue the loop, and head back to Farmington. Route 32 meanders through creeks and nature areas to rejoin Route OO in Farmington. SURROUNDED BY NINE of Missouri’s most scenic state parks, challenging golf courses, hiking trails, and award-winning vineyards and wineries, Farmington is an ideal destination. You’ll find it located just one hour south of St. Louis, at the eastern edge of the beautiful Ozark Mountains. before Belleview and Elephant Rocks State Park. Route 21 curves east along the park and then takes a sharp right. After the turn, you’ll hit Pilot Knob, Ironton, and Arcadia, where the road joins Route 72. The tri-town area is a great place to stretch your legs, grab a bite, and soak up some history. After Arcadia, Route 21 curves to the west and skirts a few conservation areas and Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park before meeting up with Route 49 and heading north through the middle of the Mark Twain National Forest. Be prepared for long stretches and winding roads through a canopy of trees. There are some small towns along the way that provide places to gas up. Once you leave the forest, take Route 19 in Cherryville to get back to Steelville. After a long day’s ride navigating the forest, reward yourself with an ice cream cone, a float, or any other tasty treat from The Soda Fountain in Steelville.

LONG STRETCHES of beautiful country, the twisting roads of the Mark Twain National Forest, and the rich history of mining are some of the best parts of this route. Beginning in Steelville, meander your way east down Route 8 until you reach Potosi. The road goes through downtown Potosi before intersecting with Route 21 where you’ll turn south and head across Big River. Before you leave, don’t miss the chance to get a look at some of the beautiful antebellum homes and historic architecture in Potosi. After you cross the bridge, continue along Route 21, passing through Caledonia. While you’re in Caledonia, check out some of the town’s eateries such as Caledonia Bar-B-Que Co. and the Crow’s Nest Diner & Pizzeria. From Eminence, head east on Route 106. Check out Rocky Falls Shut-Ins by turning south on Route H, then east on Route NN. The clear waterfall bubbles into an Ozark Mountain waterhole, creating the perfect place to take a break. Back on Route 106, the highway crosses the Current River and skirts the Current River Conservation Area into Ellington. Take Route 21 north toward Centerville. Turn left onto Route 72 before you get to town, and continue along the winding route all the way into Bunker. From there, keep going west on Route A until you reach Route 19. Be mindful of sharp, unbanked curves on Route A. From Route 19, you can go north, hit Route KK to take a ride across the Current River on the Akers Ferry, and cruise through Summersville on Route K for a longer loop. Or just continue down Route 19 to return to Eminence.

THIS ROUTE takes you into the heart of the Missouri Ozarks, full of breathtaking natural beauty and historic landmarks. The area is populated with clear, spring-fed streams, crystalline rivers, and lush forest. Be sure to bring your hiking boots because the natural landmarks beg to be explored. Although the roads are well paved, they can become tight twists, so be alert as this tour follows part of the famous Ozark Hellbender motorcycle route. The area has a lot of campsites available. MotorcycleRoads.com calls a variant of this route the “Jesse James Getaway,” named for the outlaw’s train robbery at Gad’s Hill and subsequent chase through the area. The roads are everything you could ask for—sweeping, winding, hilly—and include some serious twists and turns. And Alley Spring Mill in Eminence is not to be missed.

Eminence. Along the way, you will want to stop at Blue Spring—where a short hike will take you to the bluest running water you will ever see. Also on Route 106, near Blue Spring, is the Powder Mill Recreation Area—the perfect place for a picnic or rest stop, offering panoramic views of the Current River. This is the old location of the Powder Mill Ferry, which operated until the mid-1970s. Continuing west on Route 106, you may have the opportunity to view the wild horses of Shannon County, quite often found in the fields just past the Current River bridge. In Eminence, turn north onto Route 19, where you can stop and view several more scenic locations, including Round Spring, Devils Well, and the new state park, Echo Bluff. At Route A, turn back east toward Bunker. At Bunker, you may want to grab some ice cream at the local diner, Koy’s Kitchen. Head east on Route 72 and connect back to Route 21, where you can go north and travel back through Centerville. Before you get to Lesterville, veer left at Route N and stop at Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park.

FROM VOLCANIC ROCK to beautiful hardwoods to limestone bluffs, this scenic route will take you around sweeping twolane rural highways from the highest point in Missouri to the deepest spring. South of Ironton, connect to Route 21, at Junction 21/49. Take Route 21 south through Lesterville and view the beautiful crystal clear Black River, or visit Taum Sauk Reservoir. As you continue on Routes 21/72, you will travel through the historic Reynolds County seat of Centerville. Take a left on Pine Street in Centerville to get a photo of Reed Spring, a privately owned grist mill dating back to 1881. A few miles to the south is the visitor-friendly town of Ellington. Here, you can grab a bite to eat—perhaps the famous Molcajete—at Checo’s Mexican Restaurant. If you prefer burgers and hand-dipped milkshakes, check out Spooners. Orange Blossom serves up soups and deli sandwiches, and Saso’s is locally famous for its delicious pizza. While in town, explore Civil War and Ozark history at the Reynolds County Museum. River in Doniphan and making a weekend of it. Route 21 makes large, sweeping turns before it reaches the right turn onto Route 142. Route 142 passes through the small town of Gatewood and into Thayer. While in Thayer, spend some time at the gorgeous Grand Gulf State Park. The 130-foot chasm formed after almost three-quarters of a mile of cavern roof collapsed. Sometimes called the Little Grand Canyon, the area includes overlooks, hiking trails, and places to enjoy a picnic. The Country Cottage Café is a good place to get some food while you’re exploring the area. Hop onto Route 17 in Lanton to return to West Plains.

LOW TRAFFIC, HILLS, smooth roads, sweepers, and hairpin turns—this scenic route has all the best ingredients. The Southern Missouri route is remote, so be sure to keep your tank topped whenever passing through one of the bigger towns. In West Plains, take Highway 160 east toward Doniphan and the Current River. This curvy highway is filled with hills and winding roads that travel through parts of the Mark Twain National Forest. The road crosses the Eleven Point River after forty-five miles. Highway 160 takes a left into Doniphan. Keep going straight at the Corner Café before diverting to town to get onto Route 21. Shawnee Creek. Keep straight on Route C as it turns into Route CC and passes over Muddy Shawnee Creek. Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a peaceful, winding ride to the intersection of Route CC and Highway 61, the southernmost point of the trip. Make a right onto Highway 61 and head north. The west side of the loop shows off the rolling hills of the uplands. Stop in Old Appleton for a taste of downhome southern Missouri, and visit the historic truss bridge on Main Street, a great place to take a refreshing dip on a hot day. After a flood took out the original bridge in 1982, the community restored it in 2006. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the bridge is open to pedestrian traffic. Next on the journey up Highway 61 is Perryville, a great pit stop with all the amenities you need to refuel or grab some grub. The Barrens Winery is a nice place to stop for lunch and a glass of blackberry wine. After Perryville, the highway will take you back to St. Mary, then on to Ste. Genevieve.

AS THE OLDEST EUROPEAN settlement west of the Mississippi, Ste. Genevieve is full of history. Taking a tour of any of its historic French colonial homes is worth a stop at the beginning or end of your ride along the Southern River Road. The area is equally wellknown for its wineries. The route itself winds along the southern Missouri area of the Mississippi River toward the college town of Cape Girardeau. After you explore Ste. Genevieve, head south on Highway 61 along the Great River Road. In about ten miles, after crossing Saline Creek, you will find St. Mary.Â The highway travels through the town and intersects with Route H. Make a left onto Route H. This leg of the route showcases the lowlands of the Mississippi River. Approximately seven miles down the road, Route H meets Route 51. Make a left and an immediate right to get onto Route C. This road continues all the way to Altenburg. Follow Route C south until you cross Blue

on Route K to Akers, a century-old logging town on the Current River, where you’ll find a general store and canoe rentals. Akers Ferry currently is one of only two active two-car ferries left in the United States. Park and walk down to the river to see the ferry. Take Route KK east out of Akers, and follow it until you reach Route 19. A short drive south on Route 19 takes you to Current River State Park. Keep going to visit one of the newest state parks, Echo Bluff. The lodge at Echo Bluff offers comfy rocking chairs on the back deck to enjoy the nearby river and scenic bluffs. Go north on Route 19 and enjoy the twists, turns, and hills on your scenic ride back to Salem.

THIS TOUR will appeal as much to canoers as it does to bikers. In a relaxed loop through southern Missouri, you’ll enjoy three state parks: Montauk, Current River, and Echo Bluff, all offering visitors convenient river access and canoe rental. You’ll start your tour at the Dent County Courthouse in Salem, then head south on Route 19 to Route 32. Turn west and follow the highway to Route 119. Turning south on Route 119 takes you into Montauk State Park, where you can feed the fish in the hatchery and grab an ice cream sundae in the lodge.
