THIS RELAXING, easy-going ride is close to the hustle of the big city. A version of this route appears in some form on most motorcycle route websites, and Competition Accessories, an online motorcycle superstore, named it one of the 20 best rides in the Midwest on its blog, scoring it an 8.7 out of 10. Ron’s Roadhouse in Independence, just outside of Kansas City, is a good starting point and a destination for bikers near and far. Don’t miss out on some of Independence’s attractions while you’re there, such as the 1859 Jail, Marshal’s Home and Museum. Take Highway 24 out of Independence and head east along the Missouri River. Follow the highway through the river towns along the southern edge of the river for half of the 120mile journey. Explore historic downtown Lexington, and some of the surrounding wineries. Plan to visit the Battle of Lexington State Historic Site, infamous for its bloody, three-day Civil War battle, and walk through the Anderson home. Before you leave Lexington, be sure to check
out the city’s calendar, as Lexington hosts several festivals and fairs you won’t want to miss. In Waverly, Peters Orchards and Market offers a cool summer snack or fall treat and seasonal tours of its orchards. Highway 24 will lead you out of town heading north to cross the Missouri River again. It’s a straight shot to the town of Carollton, which has a recreation lake and places to refuel—body and bike. Before reaching the heart of town, the highway exits west onto Route 10 and opens up to farm country. This is your ticket home. The north side of this loop doesn’t follow the river as closely, but it still allows riders to catch views of the Missouri along the way. Keep going straight after Richmond where Route 10 gives way to Route 210 and sets you on the path to Cooley Lake Conservation Area and Excelsior Springs. Excelsior Springs is a slight detour at the end of the route via Route 10 and Highway 69, but a stop at Broadway Bar and Grill or Ray’s Diner is well worth the extra few miles. Route 291 brings you back to Independence.

The Pony Express

THIS ROUTE PICKS UP near Interstate 29, on Highway 169 in St. Joseph and follows Route 116, Highway 69 and Route 6 as it travels through the small towns of Maysville, Clarksdale and Plattsburg. However, the bulk of the ride will be alongside smooth plains and wooded scenery. The bustling town of St. Joseph provides several different attractions. There, you’ll find the Pony Express National Museum, the Jesse James Home, the unusual and intriguing Glore Psychiatric Museum and the Patee House Museum. For lunch or dinner in St. Joseph, stop by Nelly’s Mexican Food for delicious and authentic Mexican cuisine or the chic Boudreaux’s Louisiana Seafood for a refined dining experience and a kick of Creole. Start your journey on Highway 169 east out of St. Joseph. Follow Highway 169 for about 18
miles before turning east onto Route 116 and continue on for another 18 miles where Route 116 meets Highway 69. Go north on Highway 69, which parallels Interstate 35 and passes by Wallace State Park before reaching Cameron. Wallace State Park welcomes fishermen and has camping and hiking trails, so throw a line in the water or pitch a tent. Right after passing through Winston but before entering Altamont, Highway 69 takes a left. If you get to Altamont, you missed the turn. Continue for another mile or so before making the left turn to get onto Route 6 going west, which takes you through an area thick with creeks and grassy plains, with long, straight stretches. You can follow Route 6 all the way back to St. Joseph, but you might want to make a stop at the Pony Express Lake Conservation Area before you get there.

THIS NOD TO THE NORTHERN part of our state connects the towns of Bethany and Kirksville, along Highway 136 and Routes 149 and 6. Bethany has abundant recreational spaces for hunting, golfing and fishing, as well as exciting fairs and festivals. The picturesque landscape between Bethany and Kirksville makes this route a joy to ride. Take Highway 136 east out of Bethany to begin your journey. Enjoy the 30 miles of open road, rolling hills and grassy plains as you travel to Princeton, Missouri, birthplace of Martha “Calamity Jane” Cannary. You’ll find a surprise in Ravanna. The town has preserved the well used by its settlers and fought to keep it in the original location—the middle of the highway. It’s not until after passing through Unionville that the route takes a right turn south onto Route 149, and guides you through the
rural towns of Graysville and Martinstown. Stop in any of the local diners for an all-American meal and friendly faces. The road transitions into tighter turns near Martinstown and continues that way until you reach Novinger. The Novinger Coal Miners Museum offers an interesting diversion with coal mining exhibits and artifacts and is open the second and fourth Sundays of the month. Travel through Novinger on Route 149 to Route 6, then make a left turn and head east again, crossing over the Chariton River and ending in Kirksville. Kirksville is a thriving college town with plenty of attractions, events and campgrounds to help round out your stay. Downtown Kirksville is home to fantastic shopping and a host of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, art galleries and live music hubs.

Northern River Road Rte 79 • 43 miles

HUGGING THE BANKS of the Mississippi, this ride offers some spectacular vistas of the river. Well paved with light traffic, the road also passes through a pastoral setting with parklike wooded areas. The Great River Road extends from Minnesota to Louisiana and follows the river for 2,069 miles, a week-long trip in its entirety. It has been recognized by some as one of the greatest motorcycle routes in North America. This route visits the northern stretch that runs through Missouri. “They call it the Great River Road because it is so scenic,” says Mary Sexton, tour and travel manager for the Hannibal Convention and Visitors Bureau. “You go through small towns in the autumn when the leaves are changing colors; it is just drop-dead gorgeous.” Historic homes, great family-owned restaurants, a riverboat cruise, museums and much more make Hannibal a good place to spend the night before or after your ride. Visit during the third weekend in October for the annual Folklife Festival. Hannibal is best known for being the home of Mark Twain. The author’s
boyhood home is one of the many Twaincentric attractions in town. Starting from Hannibal, take Route 79 all the way through Louisiana, Missouri, to historic Clarksville, the end point of the Little Dixie Highway of the Great River Road National Scenic Byway. As a national scenic byway, the road is usually in great condition. Watch the skies around the dam at Saverton, about 10 miles south of Hannibal, for bald eagles that migrate to the high bluffs. Pike County is one of the largest winter migration areas for bald eagles. Louisiana, Missouri, has what some say is the most intact Victorian streetscape in the state. Downtown is known as the Georgia Street Historical District and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for its noteworthy antebellum homes; a tour is available. Stop near Clarksville at Lookout Point and Sky Life Hill at Lock and Dam No. 24, one of the highest points along the river, for an unmatched view of the river valley and the Mighty Mississippi. The Lock and Dam is on the National Register of Historic Places.

SAINT CHARLES COUNTY has one of the oldest wine districts in the United States and has a long history of producing awardwinning wines. Nestled along the Missouri River, Historic Missouri Wine Country boasts expansive scenery, wineries, historic buildings, dining and the Katy Trail. This run may be short, but it sure is sweet. Opportunities for relaxation and adventure are plentiful, so you’re sure to find the perfect destination for your next trip. Find accommodations at a one-of-a-kind bed-and-breakfast, enjoy a glass of wine from a picturesque hilltop terrace, stop by a roadhouse to stretch your legs and enjoy live music, or just head down Route 94 for a beautiful afternoon on the open road. Motorists heading to some of the wineries in August need to be aware of construction
on Route 94 that will help keep the road from flooding. The highway will be supreme riding again once work is completed. The Defiance Roadhouse is known as a pit stop for bikers with its great food, St. Louis branded beer, a covered patio and a horseshoe pit. Don’t miss the resident squirrels! For an amazing barbecue experience, get a southern classic paired with beer, bourbon, or wine at the Trail Smokehouse, open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. The Wine Country Gardens in Defiance sits on 42 acres of beautiful rolling hills and overlooks the Missouri River Valley. THIS LONG LAP of Missouri Wine Country follows the Katy Trail for much of its length, making it accessible for hiking. Missouri River Bluffs traces the Missouri River, passing through historic Jefferson City, Chamois, Hermann, New Haven, Washington and others. Several of the wineries along the way host tastings, concerts and dinner. Stop at any one of the vineyards to sample and purchase Missouri-made wine. Many of the wineries and historic sites have bed-and-breakfasts nearby, making this route perfect for a romantic weekend getaway. Begin your journey in Jefferson City. Stroll through the aromatic and lush Carnahan Memorial Garden, the Cole County Historical Society Museum, the Governor’s Mansion or the Missouri State Capitol. And don’t miss a stop at the legendary Central Dairy for an unforgettable ice cream treat.
After exploring Jefferson City, ride out of town on Highway 50 going east and get on Route A or Route 100, your choice. They both lead to Chamois, but Route A follows the river more closely. Hermann’s wineries and celebration of German heritage await after passing through Chamois. There are plenty of places to grab a bite to eat and enjoy this river town. A bridge connects the north leg of the route with the south and offers an opportunity to cross the river and connect with Route 94. Washington is your last stop along Route 100. Here, cross over the river along Route 47 and visit at Thierbach Orchards in Marthasville. Highways 54 and 63 connect with Route 94 in Jefferson City to carry you across the Missouri River and back to our state capital. This route is all about variety and is as full-bodied and enjoyable as a glass of good Norton.

Loop the Lake Hwy 54, Rtes W, 5 • 82 miles

YOU CAN START this medium-length loop in Camdenton, on Highway 54, to see one of the most scenic areas in the state. Try this route out in September during the Lake of the Ozarks BikeFest for a weekend you won’t forget. The winding highways and roads, like Bagnell Dam Boulevard, carry you along the water’s edge of the Lake of the Ozarks. Almost any spot is a perfect place to pull over, breathe in the fresh, crisp air of the Ozarks, and enjoy breathtaking views. Follow Highway 54 all the way to Osage Beach. You can stop and spend the afternoon on the banks of the lake when you pass by the Lake of the Ozarks State Park and Grand Glaize Recreation Area, a refreshing place to stretch your legs and enjoy the water.
For a cold drink and an upbeat place to enjoy it, look for one of the many lively Ozark pubs, such as Shady Gators or Backwater Jack’s. Be sure to follow Business Highway 54 to choose from the many fantastic restaurant and attraction options the lake offers. Business Highway 54 transitions into Route Y and then Route W, which take you into the hilly panoramas of the Ozarks and on to Versailles, Missouri. If you’re staying for dinner in Versailles, be sure to stop by Lehman’s Restaurant, which is known for its delicious, home-style meals. To return to Camdenton, take a left from Route W onto West Newton Street to connect with Route 5 to head down the west side of the lake.

TAKE IN ALL THAT MID-MISSOURI has to offer on one of our longest rides. This trail and its alternate route have endless opportunities for good food, fun shopping, gorgeous natural scenery and fascinating landmarks. You’ll find lots of Midwestern charm and plenty of great views. The route is packed with conservation areas, most of which have camping available. Start your journey on Route E, also called Stadium Boulevard, in Columbia. Head northwest on North Route E toward the small town of Harrisburg, and make a left to get on Route 124. The road is pretty straight, which makes for a smooth start to your central Missouri tour. Route 124 meets up with Route 240 right before Fayette, home to the Morrison Observatory. Be sure to stop at the biker-friendly Hawgs & Heifers Bar; a trip to Fayette on two wheels wouldn’t be complete without it. From Fayette continue north on Route 240. In five miles, you’ll reach the intersection of Route 3. To loop around and get a longer ride make a right onto Route 3. But if you’d rather cut your day short, choose the alternate route and continue following Route 240 into Glasgow and across the Missouri River where
you eventually connect with Route 41. If you decide to take Route 3 you’ll connect with Route 129 in Roanoke. In Salisbury, take the left onto Highway 24 and enjoy the ride to Brunswick, where you can see the World’s Largest Pecan and appreciate this small town along the Grand River. Just outside of Brunswick, and after crossing the Grand River, make a left onto Route 41. Cross the Missouri River in Miami, Missouri. Here, the Van Meter State Park can be a nice side trip to stretch your legs or soak up some Native American history. The trip down Route 41 is uninterrupted for about 15 miles after Miami until you reach Marshall. From there, Route 41 makes a left and merges with Route 240 for a short time, and passes by Arrow Rock—a blast from the past. The entire town is listed on The National Register of Historic Places. Continue on and make a left onto Santa Fe Road to ride into Boonville. This little river town has a lot of history to boast, from the Civil War to the railroad. Cross the Boonslick Bridge on Highway 40 and drive through farmland. Make a final stop at Les Bourgeois Vineyards in Rocheport for a well-deserved glass of red or white.

TOUR THE AREA and loop around Truman Lake, a hot spot for tourists and locals alike, with boating, camping, ATV riding and fishing. This cruise passes over the Harry S Truman Reservoir eight times. Visit Drake Harbor or stroll around the thriving lake town of Warsaw and discover a new favorite haunt before or after you set out. Perched on a bluff, the visitor’s center has a stunning view of the lake and dam as well as a wealth of natural-history exhibits. The Truman Lake Loop offers an alternative route to cut this ride into a half day’s trip by crossing the Osage River along Route Z. The alternate route (approximately 53 miles) puts you on Route 82 but is more challenging for riders, with tight turns and a few switchbacks thrown in. Beginning in Warsaw, head west on Route 7 toward Clinton. Throughout the ride, and especially along Harry S Truman State Park (a slight detour along Route UU), you’ll see western Ozark landscape: dry, open oak woodlands with bands of rocky prairies that are abundant with wildflowers and native grasses. The park
also has a marina and various outdoor activities available including fishing and swimming. Before you reach the turn onto Route UU for the park, you can choose to take a left on Route Z for the alternate route, bypassing Clinton. But, Clinton is waiting to be explored. It has the largest town square in Missouri and a variety of restaurants. Try out Smith’s. Make a left at the intersection in Clinton to jump onto Route 13 heading south. Continue on Route 13 for about 25 miles. After Osceola, which serves up an awesome selection of cheese at the Osceola Cheese Co., turn left onto Route 82 going east. Follow the highway until it intersects with Route 83 and turn left. Route 83 will take you all the way back to Warsaw and Route 7, where you began. A great time to ride this loop is the third week of October during Warsaw’s Heritage Days, when you can enjoy the festival and also the fall colors of the Ozarks. The entire lake loop is surrounded by state wildlife and conservation areas loaded with hiking trails, camping and scenic viewpoints.

JUST ONE HOUR SOUTH OF ST. LOUIS at the edge of the beautiful Ozark Mountains, you will discover Farmington. Surrounded by nine of Missouri’s most scenic state parks, challenging golf courses, hiking trails and awardwinning vineyards and wineries, Farmington is the perfect destination. There are 10 wineries within 20 minutes of Farmington, and this route passes by all of them. It also coincides with the Route du Vin Ste. Genevieve Missouri Wine Trail. Southeast Missouri is one of the most beautiful scenic regions of the Midwest with rolling hills, green grasses and spectacular fall colors. Either on your way into Farmington or on your trip out, St. Joe State Park is a great beginning or ending. You could spend all day in Farmington alone, but The Factory is surely a can’t-miss stop. Developed from a 75-year-old garment building, The Factory was renovated into a destination for shopping and great food. There are more than 45,000 square feet in the mall and more than 60 specialty shops, artist and dance studios, amazing eateries, a walking track and tourist center.
Make your way onto Route OO to start this ride. Hit Route F, and proceed for a short 3 miles before meeting your first winery on the Route du Vin, Twin Oaks. Take Sand Creek Road to visit Sand Creek Winery, or branch off onto Laws Road, a few minutes from Twin Oaks, and stop by Papa’s Vineyard. To continue the tour, get back on Route F for another 10 miles before coming to the next winery on the tour. Take another branch off of Route F. There are long, smooth curves on Route F, but once it merges with Route B, the road becomes curvy. This leg of the trip will take you to the Crown Ridge Tiger Sanctuary where you can tour the grounds and enjoy some delicious food. The sanctuary has a resort if you want to plan an exotic and luxurious retreat. Route B skirts Interstate 55 before hitting Route 32. Take a left to continue the loop and head back to Farmington. Route 32 meanders through creeks and nature areas to rejoin Route OO in Farmington. Hawn State Park and the Pickle Springs Natural Area are great stops if you like clearbottomed streams and peace and quiet.

THIS ROUTE TAKES YOU into the heart of the Missouri Ozarks, full of breathtaking natural beauty and historic scenery. This area is populated with clear, spring-fed streams, crystalline rivers and lush forest. Be sure to bring your hiking boots because the natural landmarks beg to be explored. While the roads are nice and paved, they can become tight twists, so be alert as this route follows parts of the famous Ozark Hellbender motorcycle route. Take a break, and pitch a tent because the area has endless camping available. Motorcycleroads.com names a variant of this route the Jesse James Getaway after the outlaw’s train robbery at Gad’s Hill and subsequent chase through the area. The roads are everything you could ask for— sweeping, winding, hilly—and include some serious twists and turns. And Alley Spring Mill in Eminence can’t be missed.
At Rocky Falls Shut-in, nine miles southeast of Eminence on Highway NN off Route 106, the clear waterfall bubbles into an Ozark Mountain water hole, creating the perfect place to relax. Route 106 crosses the Current River and skirts the Current River Conservation Area into Ellington. Take Route 21 north toward Centerville. Turn left onto Route 72 before you get to town, and continue along the winding route all the way into Bunker. From there, keep going west on Route A until you reach Route 19. Be especially cautious for sharp, unbanked curves on Route A. From here, you can go north along Route 19 and hit Route KK to take a ride across the Akers Ferry and cruise through Summersville for a longer loop. Or continue down Route 19 to return to Eminence.

THIS RUN HAS ALL the best ingredients: low traffic, smooth roads, sweepers, hairpin turns, and hills. The Southern Missouri scenic route is remote, so be sure to fill up in one of the bigger towns. In West Plains, take Highway 160 east toward Doniphan and the Current River. This curvy highway is filled with hills and twisting roads that travel through parts of the Mark Twain National Forest. Highway 160 crosses the Eleven Point River after 45 miles. If you’re an angler, this is a good place to stop and throw in a line. Highway 160 takes a left into Doniphan. Keep going straight at the Corner Cafe before diverting to town to get onto Route 21. For a fun side trip, consider floating on the Current River in Doniphan and spending the weekend. Route 21 makes large, sweeping turns before it reaches the right turn onto Route 142.
If you cross Klenn Creek, you missed the turn. Route 142 passes through the small town of Gatewood and into Thayer. While in Thayer, spend some time at the gorgeous Grand Gulf State Park. The 130-foot chasm was left when almost three-quarters of a mile of cavern roof collapsed. Sometimes called the Little Grand Canyon, the area includes overlooks, hiking trails and places to enjoy a picnic. Country Cottage Cafe is a good place to get some food while you’re exploring the area. “We have one of the largest natural bridges in the state,” says Ann Price at Grand Gulf State Park. Spanning 100 to 200 feet with an opening 75 feet high and 50 feet wide, the bridge is a pleasant walk with natural cooling during the summer. Hop onto Route 17 in Lanton to return to West Plains.

PICK THIS ROUTE UP in Rolla, on Kingshighway and follow it on Interstate 44. Devil’s Elbow isn’t extremely challenging, but provides enough adventure that riders of any level can enjoy. The Mid-America Freedom Rally is held every Memorial Day weekend in Buckhorn. From riding alongside the bluffs of the Big Piney to cruising through small towns with plenty of mom and pop restaurants and accommodations, this rustic and relaxing 130-plus-mile loop takes you south near Fort Leonard Wood on Route 17, along Route 32 to historic Salem, and north on Route 72 to Rolla, straight into the heart of Mid-Missouri and along the Mother Road. Take the interstate to the Route J exit and make a right onto Route Z. Plan to stop at the highly rated and funky Elbow Inn Bar & BBQ in Devil’s Elbow. Its unusual decor and smoked barbecue make a fun stop along Route Z, originally a piece of Historic Route 66. The trip wouldn’t be complete without crossing the Devil’s Elbow bridge. The area that crosses the Big Piney River was named after a particularly difficult place to navigate along the river known as a “devil of an elbow.”
You can detour slightly from Route Z to cross the historic bridge on the original Route 66, now named Teardrop Road. From there, follow the road back to Route Z. Old Route 66 continues to parallel the interstate and eventually crosses over the interstate into Waynesville. In Waynesville, the Mother Road follows Route 17 out of town and south near Fort Leonard Wood for about 30 miles until you pass the small town of Success. Just after Success, make a left onto Route 32. Enjoy the ride for another 30 miles or so until you hit the historic town of Salem. The Roadhouse Bar and Grille in Salem is a great place to stop before making the ride back to Rolla along Route 72. Fellow bikers in online forums warn to watch out for bumps and pot holes on the Old Route 66, but once you get on the lettered highways you’re in for a real treat with a little bit of everything, from sweeping curves to tight twisties. Use caution in some of the turns along the way, though—bits of gravel from the shoulders of the roads will wash on to the pavement from time to time.

THIS LOOP, which takes you along Missouri Routes 8, 21, 49 and 19, passes through several small towns in the Arcadia Valley Region where you can stop to check out quaint downtown areas and local shopping. The best parts of this route are the long stretches of beautiful country, the twisting roads of the Mark Twain National Forest and the rich history of mining. Reconnect with nature and enjoy the scenic rivers, lakes, creeks and rolling pastures— some of eastern Missouri’s prettiest—while following the twists and turns of this ride. Beginning in Steelville, meander your way east down Route 8 until you reach Potosi. The road goes through downtown Potosi before intersecting with Route 21 where you turn right onto the highway going south across Big River. Don’t miss the chance to get a look at some of the beautiful antebellum homes and historic architecture in Potosi. From there, continue along Route 21 passing through Caledonia. A few good places to eat are Caledonia BarBQ Co. and the Music Kitchen.
Take a break from the road at the scenic viewpoint, right off of Route 21, a few miles before Belleview and Elephant Rocks State Park. Route 21 curves east along the park and then takes a sharp right where it intersects with Route NN. After the turn, you’ll hit Pilot Knob, Ironton and Arcadia where the road crosses Route 72. The tri-town area is a great place to stretch your legs and grab a bite or soak up some history. After Arcadia, Route 21 curves to the west where it skirts a few conservation areas and Johnson’s Shut-Ins State Park before meeting up with Route 49 and heading north through the middle of the Mark Twain National Forest. Be prepared for long stretches and winding roads through a canopy of trees. Some small towns along the way provide places to gas up. Once you leave the forest, take Route 19 in Cherryville to get back to Steelville Reward youself with an ice cream, a float or any other tasty treat from The Soda Fountain in Steelville after a long day’s ride navigating the forest.

STE. GENEVIEVE is known for being the oldest European settlement west of the Mississippi. Taking a tour of any of its historic French colonial homes is worth a stop at the beginning or end of your ride along the Southern River Road. The area is well-known for its wineries. The route itself winds along the southern Missouri area of the Mississippi River toward the big college town of Cape Girardeau. After you explore Ste. Genevieve head south on Highway 61 along the Great River Road. In about 10 miles and after crossing a branch of the Mississippi River, you will find St. Mary. The highway travels through the town and intersects with Route H. Make a left onto Route H. This leg of the route showcases the lowlands of the Mississippi River. Approximately seven miles down the road, Route H meets Route 51. Make a left and an immediate right to get onto Route C. This road continues all the way to Altenburg. Be sure to visit Tower Rock Winery, named after the 90-foot-high rock formation in the Mississippi River near the winery, if you have a taste for red and white French hybrid wines.
Follow Route C south until you cross Blue Shawnee Creek. Keep straight on Route C as it turns into Route CC, and pass over Muddy Shawnee Creek. It’s a peaceful, winding ride to the intersection of Route CC and Highway 61, the southern most point of the trip. Make a left onto Highway 61. The west side of the loop shows off the rolling hills of the uplands. Stop in Old Appleton for a taste of downhome southern Missouri, and visit the historic truss bridge on Main Street, a great place to take a refreshing dip on a hot day. After the original bridge flooded, the community restored the national historic place. Today the bridge is open to pedestrian traffic and is a recreation spot for locals and visitors. Next on the journey up Highway 61 is Perryville, a great pit stop with all the amenities you need to refuel or grab some grub. The National Shrine of our Lady of the Miraculous Medal is located in Perryville, and the shrine offers tours. After Perryville, the highway will take you back to St. Mary then Ste. Genevieve.

TOUR THE BOOTHEEL by starting this route in the southwest Cape Girardeau. Now full of cotton fields, the Missouri Bootheel was once a vast swampland. Settlers converted and cleared the area over the years, and today it is one of the most fertile and productive land in the country. This route is probably best taken during harvest season when the crops are mature. Be aware of strong gusts of wind. This run passes through the port town of New Madrid, infamous for the New Madrid Fault and the earthquake that made the Mississippi River run backward in 1811. From Cape Girardeau, take Highway 61 south to New Madrid. The highway passes through Sikeston. Lambert’s Cafe, “Home of the throwed rolls,” is always a destination and required stop anytime you pass through. It is well worth the trip to stop and explore
the small museum in New Madrid that devotes substantial effort into documenting the earthquake and the faultline. You can see a documentary on the earthquake with a paid museum tour. The museum also features Native American artifacts and a room dedicated to the Civil War and the Battle of Island No. 10. After exiting New Madrid, make a right onto Highway 62. It’s straight, flat, open road until you reach Malden. In Malden the run turns north following Route 25. In Dexter, 16 miles up the road, Fiddlers Fish House is known for its spicy catfish and hushpuppies. Learn about the history of our nation’s military newspaper at The Stars and Stripes Museum and Library in Bloomfield. Make a right turn in Dutchtown to get on Route 74 and head north back to Cape Girardeau.

THE BENNETT SPRING TRIANGLE picks up off Interstate 44 on South Jefferson Avenue (exit 129) in Lebanon, which turns quickly into Route 64. Before you leave, see what the town of Lebanon has on its calendar. The community is known for hosting fairs and festivals that pop up year-round, as well as being a hub for Historic Route 66 enthusiasts. Lebanon was thrice named as one of the Top 200 Towns for Sportsmen by Outdoor Life magazine. Plan to stop at the Route 66 Museum in the Lebanon Laclede County Library, which is found by going west for a quarter-mile on South Jefferson after taking the exit. For canoeing, camping and fishing opportunities outside of the city, head 12 miles west along Route 64 to the beautiful Bennett Spring State Park, famous for its restful atmosphere, trout fishing and stunning wildflowers.
The remainder of the ride is especially scenic as it follows Route K, which later turns into Route P. Route P passes through the small towns of Windyville, Cedar Ridge, and finally Long Lane, where you can hop on Route 32 and ride it all the way back to Lebanon. Althought Routes K and P aren’t maintained as well as Route 64, they shouldn’t cause any major problems. Riders should be vigilant on the road mainly because of the “peg scrapers” the Ozarks offer, especially on Routes P and K. This ride is well-known and has been submitted by users to Motorcycleroads.com, who chose to highlight the run because the high elevation points that make for scenic views of this beautiful rural area. Be sure to fuel up before you leave—after Bennett Spring, gas stations may be difficult to find.

START YOUR DRIVE IN Sparta, and hop on Route 125 southbound to travel deep into Mark Twain National Forest. Make a right on Route H to visit historic Forsyth or keep left on Route 125 through Bradleyville. If you choose to stop by Forsyth, you can rest up in one of the resorts at Edgewater Beach that circle Lake Taneycomo, known for its great trout fishing, abundant wildlife and beautiful views. Take Highway 160 heading east to return to the main route. South of Bradleyville, you’ll find the HerculesGlades Wilderness Area, which showcases more than 30 miles of hiking trails through rocky hillsides and low grasslands. If you’d rather skirt the tree-covered rolling hills instead of hike them, continue to Rueter and make a left onto Highway 160.
You can’t miss crossing over one of the largest concrete dams in America along Highway 160—Bull Shoals Dam in Theodosia. Take a dip in Bull Shoals Lake where you can fish and scuba dive in crisp, clear water or camp at one of the campgrounds for the night. And treat yourself to a dinner at Cookie’s restaurant at the marina. Be sure to get to Cookie’s early on Friday and Saturday because there is usually a line out the door for its famous prime rib special. Keep going east on Highway 160, and make a left onto Route 5 in Gainesville. Continue north just five miles, and you’ll enter Caney Mountain Conservation Area where you can catch glimpses of the rocky hillsides. Hop back onto Route 5, which has smooth, straight stretches of highway, before making a left turn onto Route 14 in Ava to complete this loop and return to Sparta.

BRANSON IS KNOWN as the family version of Las Vegas to Missourians, with its endless live entertainment, Vegas-worthy shows and world-class performers. The Ozark Mountain Thunder Motorcycle Rally brings thousands of motorcycle enthusiasts to Branson every June. There are too many things to do and see in Branson to name them all, but Silver Dollar City, Titanic Museum and the Showboat Branson Belle are on the shortlist. Make the trip more than once to experience all the city has to offer. The real star of the show is Table Rock Lake. As you traverse the twists and turns of the Ozark mountains, be sure to soak in the ridgetop views of the lake. Enjoy this cruise through the 800 miles of Table Rock’s shoreline. Starting in Branson, navigate your way to Highway 65 and head northwest. The road meets up with Highway 160 and turns left after approximately 10 miles. Make a left onto Route 13, and follow it west until you reach Reeds Spring. An alternative route is available here. For a shorter trip, take Route 13 and cut through Kimberling
City where the Cruise-Inn & Throttle Down is a hot spot for bikers heading through the area. Make a left and go east on Route 86 to head back to Branson. To complete the entire lake loop, make a right onto Route 76 from Highway 160 and cross over the lake in Cape Fair. Make a left from Route 76 to get on Route EE and keep going east. Turn right onto Route 39 for a short jaunt to the intersection of Routes 39 and 248 and go east. This roadway has a wicked set of curves before you pass through the forest and arrive at Cassville. Once you reach Cassville, you might want to stop and stretch your legs, or grab some grub at one of its home-style diners. Route 112 will take you south into Roaring River State Park and along a small branch of the lake. Take the left onto Route F and enjoy the curves until you hit Route 86. Taking a left at this road will lead you east and all the way back to Highway 65, past Dogwood Canyon Nature Park and into Branson again.

PICK THIS ROUTE UP at the Kansas border coming into Joplin on Historic Route 66. The Mother Road passes through Joplin, Webb City and Carthage, and continues along to Springfield. The well-traveled route is full of Historic Route 66 buildings and landmarks. Follow the Mother Road along Business Highway 49 north out of Joplin after exploring the city. Don’t forget to stop by Hideout Harley-Davidson to check out some of the inventory and talk shop. In Webb City, take a right along the historic route and Broadway Street. Broadway Street turns into Route HH and leads you to East Main Street in Carterville. Make a left on North Pine Street and a right onto Old 66 Boulevard. Look for signs designating the Historic Route 66 along the way. Old 66 Boulevard crosses over the interstate where it turns left and curves right along the
outer road. You’ll pass by the 66 Drive-In Theatre on your way into Carthage. Just after the theater, the road merges with West Oak Street and continues on through the city. In keeping with the route of the Mother Road, make a left onto Garrison Avenue and a right onto East Central Avenue. Follow Route 96, veering slightly left. It’s a straight shot with open roads to Route 39 and a loop around Stockton Lake. The lake is famous for sailing. Located close to the northwestern edge of the Ozarks Plateau where rugged Aux-Arcs hills give way to the Great Plains, it’s windy, but a gorgeous ride. Make a right onto Route 32 in Stockton. In Fair Play turn right again onto Route 123 and continue to Walnut Grove. Take Route V to Ash Grove and get on Route F. Follow Route F to Route 266 where you make a right to get back on Route 96 and head back to Joplin.
