PRESIDENT’S LETTER

W

elcome back to the Missouri National Guard Association magazine, The Sentinel! I am honored to serve as your MoNGA President. Thank you for your confidence and the opportunity to lead our association. I have proudly served over twenty-five years with the Missouri National Guard and have enjoyed supporting and participating as a member of MoNGA along the way. Both of these organizations have contributed greatly, in various ways, to my personal and professional growth and experiences, and I want all of our members—of both organizations— to be able to say the same thing. One of the cornerstones of my presidency is to not only grow our membership, but also increase its involvement. The association cannot stand with only the support and involvement of a few; it will require input, involvement, and support from all of us. We have added the Membership Committee this year to assist with achieving these goals. I want the association to continually look for opportunities to fill a need and to enhance our effectiveness, transparency, and integrity to our members and supporters. I challenge all of you to assist us with these endeavors. If you have an idea to strengthen the association, please bring it forth. The association plays an important role in the daily lives of both its members and non-members. Our leadership is working every day with agencies, entities, and legislatures–both inside and outside the state of Missouri–to improve benefits, to increase the bargaining power of our members, and to protect our professional interests. I hope to accomplish several things as president. Here are just a few highlights of my goals: 1. Increase the visibility of MoNGA to the soldiers, airmen, and retirees of our organizations. We have ideas—and will be looking for more—to display what we do and who we do it for. The lifeblood of this organization is membership. 2. Grow our corporate sponsorships. We must foster relationships and create partnerships that are mutually beneficial for our members and partners. These supporters not only raise much-needed funds, but also help in building a contingency to assist us in driving our legislative initiatives. 3. Continue to streamline enrollment and payment processes for new and renewing members. I have received a great deal of feedback from members concerning our website and enrollment process. The new website is a great representation of how we can move forward, but it is just the beginning. We will continue to make improvements. 4. Establish our association as one of the most influe tial state associations. Our strength is in our num-

Michelle Struemph, President

bers, and the greater our numbers, the louder our voice in Washington, DC, Jefferson City, and elsewhere for guard soldiers, airmen, and retirees. Your executive council and board of directors are working hard to develop solutions to meet our goals. Our after-action reviews and attendance levels at association events have made great advances, and we hope to continue this trend. We also now offer discounted prices to our membership for these events, showing an immediate benefit to belonging. And best of all, it encourages new memberships! I mentioned earlier one of the cornerstones of my presidency is to grow membership and increase membership involvement. Our members are our most important and valuable assets. Without the soldiers, airmen, retirees, civilians, and supporters, we wouldn’t be where we are today. I challenge each of you to reach out to your peers and talk about MoNGA. Discuss the benefits, the camaraderie, and the support the association and its members strive to provide to all members and supporters of the Missouri National Guard. There are no greater salespeople for an organization than its members. As your president, I welcome your insight, and advice, and I will engage your ideas with actions to enhance and improve our organization from the ground up. In closing, I ask that you take a moment to visit our website at mongaonline.com to ensure we have the correct information for you. It is important that we have an effective communications tool with our members. Timely communication allows us to mobilize our members into action and rapidly make decisions, which directly impact all of us. Your support is the backbone of our success, and I look forward to working with each of you to maximize our potential.

his October, the Missouri National Guard Association (MoNGA) completed its first tour of D-Day Battlefields and related sites in France. Twenty-three people took part in the tour, including active and retired Missouri Guard men and women, guard retirees, and others. MG Stephen L. Danner, Missouri TAG, and his wife, Katie hosted the tour, which was a collaborative effort of MoNGA and the National Guard Association of the United States. Participants paid their own fees and expenses; no MoNGA funds were used to finance the trip Tour participants left the United States on October 2 and returned on October 8. During those six days, tour participants visited the June 6, 1944 D-Day landing beaches and key D-Day-related sites, including the National Guard Monument on Omaha Beach; the cliffs of Pointe du Hoc; the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer; Ste-Mere-Eglise, the first village liberated by the Americans on D-Day; the Overlord Museum and other museums in the Normandy region; and Pegasus Bridge. D-Day experts led tour members. Participants also enjoyed a day in Paris. Some aspects of the tour that are usually not available to other tour groups included a champagne reception at the Hauserman Chateau in Normandy and standing in the Ring of Honor during a flag-lowering ceremony at the American Cemetery at Colleville-sur-Mer. Plans are currently in development for a similar tour to be sponsored by MoNGA in 2016. ¾

Missouri’s Returning Heroes Education Act • This act ensures that public post-secondary schools in Missouri cannot charge more than $50 per credit hour. Missouri’s Returning Heroes Act combined with the Montgomery GI Bill could give applicants the most amount of financial assistance for the longest period of time, according to the University of Missouri Veterans Center. You are eligible for this financial assistance if you have US veteran status or served for more than thirty days in a US Department of Defense armed combat zone, since September 11, 2001. You are also eligible if you were a Missouri resident when you entered the military, were honorably discharged, and are enrolled in a degree-seeking program as an undergraduate. The maximum award amount is based on current enrollment and additional financial assistance. Aid that goes toward tuition and fees, such as grants and scholarships, is subtracted from the total. The tuition and fees that exceed $50 per credit hour are waived. Each semester, students must maintain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5.

The US military employs all types of professionals, including veternarians.

Hear from Hired Heroes

“When I came in, they said ‘we want you as a Veteran, because we know your work ethic, and we know your abilities to accomplish the task at hand.’” -John Breuer, Marine Corps Veteran “Veterans give so much every day, whether they are deployed or not. They’re always sacrificing something – time – energy – anything. So for them to get out of the military, and have a company like (Toyota) Bodine looking for Veterans to hire, gives them a step forward to continue to support themselves and their family.” -Eric Riter, Army Veteran “A lot of people talk about the sacrifices that Veterans made, and it’s absolutely true. When you talk about the missed birthdays, you talk about the missed anniversaries. Being able to offer this program and at least say ‘hey, you know what, we are going to recognize that sacrifice, and we’re going to bring you in and at least consider you for a job.’” -Jack Williams, Air Force Veteran “You need to hire Veterans first. They have unique skills and typically can get more done in a workplace. Anybody that can put their life on the line for their country, deserves to have the first shot at any job.” -Joe Narigon, Army Veteran and employer

This year’s event will be held in conjunction with the 69th Annual Conference of the Missouri National Guard Association (MoNGA) instead of at locations throughout Missouri, as had been done in previous years. According to Debra Havens of the Missouri Guard’s Retirement Services Office the state-level RAD will provide retirees with valuable information on a variety of topics. Experts will be available to directly respond to questions from retirees and retiree spouses. Guest speakers include MG Stephen L. Danner, Missouri’s TAG Missouri Guard Retirement Services Offic will begin notifying retirees by mail in January. There is no charge for attending the RAD, but participant registration is required. LTC (R) Don Koonce, a member of the MoNGA Board of Directors and the Retiree Representative to the Board, says that making the RAD part of the MoNGA Annual Conference is a tangible example of how much the association values our retirees and the contribution that they can make to MoNGA. “We want them to be active in the association,” Koonce says. Current plans call for a reduced fee for retirees wanting to attend the conference’s closing banquet on April 16, following the RAD event. ¾

The Family Resiliency Center opened July 11 to aid Missouri military families in domestic, health, and spiritual issues.

PILLARS OF RESILIENCY OFFER SUPPORT FOR MISSOURI MILITARY FAMILIES

I

t was five years ago when the Missouri National Guard Foundation began working with private partners to build a new Family Resiliency Center at the Ike Skelton Training Site in Jefferson City. The idea was to have a place that would provide a cornerstone of programs designed to strengthen military members and their families’ ability to handle the service-related challenges they may face. Today, that lofty idea is a reality with the doors to the new Family Resiliency Center and the Danner Chapel, situated overlooking the scenic bluffs at the Guard’s headquarters, opened for service on July 11, 2015. The center provides Missouri National Guardsmen and their families resources to help them with domestic, mental and physical health, and spiritual issues, says MG Steven Danner, Missouri’s TAG. The need to address the issues that come with adjustment from active duty to civilian life has grown with the formal end to combat operations declared last year in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. The largest representation of combat troops in Missouri Guard ranks and combat veterans in its communities have increased substantially as a result. The building features six prominent support columns that symbolize the

pillars of resiliency: social, emotional, spiritual, financial, family, and physical. These pillars are considered essential for well-being, counseling, and behavioral health care. The building will be used for several events to maintain the Missouri National Guard’s high level of soldier readiness and resiliency, says Danner. With several screening and counseling rooms a to accommodate individuals and groups, the center supports an array of services including fifteen different Army programs that will help guardsmen improve mental health, deal with grief, address stress, advance suicide awareness, and reunite with their families. The center also serves as a venue for family and veteran events, such as promotion and retirement ceremonies, funerals, memorial services, weddings, and other gatherings. The foundation used more than $600,000 in donated funds provided by organizations, businesses, and individuals . “This Resiliency Center could not have happened without the hard work of the Missouri National Guard Foundation and the unwavering support of a long list of individuals and corporate partners,” Danner says. “This beautiful facility and the resources we have housed there will bring aid and comfort

to generations of guardsmen and their families.” Generous benefactors included Veterans United, World Wide Technology, the Ameren Corporation, and J.E. Dunn Construction. Other key contributors to the project included Joel Denney, executive director of the Missouri National Guard Association, LF (R) Don Koonce and COL (R) Peter Goldschmidt. Many individuals also donated through the federal and state combined charitable campaign and personal donations. “This turned out to be a wonderful project that will provide a great service to our veterans,” says Scott Englund, president of the foundation. “The chapel is a great place to reflect and revitalize yourself.” The dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the culmination of a project that reflected the Guard and community’s commitment to the wellbeing of soldiers and airmen, their family members, and the veteran community, says COL Chaplain Gary D. Gilmore, senior Army chaplain to the Missouri National Guard. “How grateful I am today for you who have shared your strength to make this facility a reality,” says Gilmore. “And as with any worthy project, there are many people and many efforts that have come together to make this moment possible.” ¾

MILITARY HISTORY MUSEUM GROWS UP

T

FROM THE CIVIL WAR TO IRAQ: MISSOURI’S MILITARY HISTORY IS REMEMBERED HERE The Museum of Missouri Military History is a hands-on, interactive museum located at the Missouri National Guard’s Ike Skelton Training Center, east of Jefferson City. Housed in a converted mechanical school maintenance facility, the museum continues to grow with dozens of exhibits, including an F-15 fighte , a 1967 Cobra attack helicopter, and military equipment and artifacts dating back to the Civil War. The museum also recognizes the notable service and military affili tions of such famous Missourians as Harry Truman, Ernest Hemingway and Gen. John Pershing.

he Missouri National Guard’s Museum of Military History has grown into a bigger and better facility. Still located at the National Guard headquarters in Jefferson City, the new museum has expanded to cover 6,500 square feet of exhibit space, and now it features cutting edge technology and facilities, says Museum Director Charles Machon. “When MG Steve Danner told us his vision for a new, improved museum, we were excited,” Machon says. “It’s been a lot of work, but every day we see that work paying off. Since fall, crews have hung and painted dry wall, refinis ed floors, and fitted climate control systems, Machon says. In January, Capitol Exhibit Services Incorporated built display cases, interior walls, and platforms for macro-exhibits. Machon says the project has exceeded his expectations. The first time he saw the museum, it was a grease-stained vehicle maintenance shop. “When the idea of converting a large maintenance facility into a museum first arose, I couldn’t help but think of all the obstacles we faced to make it suitable for displaying and storing artifacts,” Machon says. “We had to transform a large, hollow, oil-stained shell of a building that was susceptible to every type of extreme Midwestern weather into a museum.” With the AG’s support, Machon and his team did just that. Danner made preserving and promoting the Guard’s history a priority, devoting $1 million and a dedicated team to support the project. The new and improved Museum of Missouri Military History re-opened December 7, 2014 to a crowd of several hundred as a place where Missourians can learn about the Show-Me State’s Guard, says command historian MAJ Alan Brown. “Without MG Danner’s vision and leadership, this wouldn’t have been possible,” says MAJ Alan Brown, Missouri’s command historian. “MG Danner believes pride in our heritage will enhance today’s guardsmen’s esprit de corps. Since we opened, we have had six thousand visitors from at least twelve countries and thirty states,” Brown says. ¾ Fall/Winter 2015 ¾ 17

Members and others who donate to a custom-designed, Missouri National Guard calendar would be entered in a weekly drawing to win one of fifty-two firearm to be awarded throughout the year. In addition to the MoNGA scholarship program and operations, funds from the project would benefit the NRA’s support of youth shooting programs in Missouri and elsewhere. According to MoNGA President CW5 Michelle Struemph, the collaboration with the Missouri Friends of NRA is an innovative concept that compliments the hunting and shooting interests of many MoNGA members and Missourians. Struemph says that MoNGA official have consulted with the National Guard Association of Indiana, which is involved in a similar partnership with the NRA. Pending officia approval by the MoNGA Board of Directors, information about the NRA/MoNGA partnership will be provided at an upcoming event soon!¾

In this year’s Guide to Higher Education we compiled a list of degree granting institutes across the Show-Me State complete with key facts we felt were the most useful when deciding how to pursue your higher education. For adult students and working professionals we included information on weekend and evening courses, online learning, and whether or not the school offers child care on campus. For our veterans, we made sure to list those schools that are part of the Yellow Ribbon Program, meaning they assist with covering the additional cost of attendance above the GI Bill cap. And for our traditional students or parents evaluating schools for their recently graduated senior, we made sure to have the most important figures on acceptance rates, verage cost, aid packages, and student population.

Military Friendly.

On Purpose. Grantham University has been a leader in adult learning since 1951 … especially for our military. In fact, we have a reputation for being a military-friendly school. At least, that’s what we keep hearing from military-supporting organizations who say things like “best for vets” and “military and veteran friendly.” More importantly, it’s also what we hear from our military students.

Serving those who serve® for 65 years. And still going strong.

Spanning the globe At Harding University we don’t just talk about global experiences, we provide them. At seven international campuses spanning five continents, Harding students spend a semester studying outside the realm of a traditional classroom encountering different cultures, historic sites, foreign languages and amazing architecture. Nearly 50 percent of students in each graduating class have attended one or more of the international programs, which provide a Christian worldview.
