Hiring Vets is a Win-Win As Americans, we owe a great debt to our military veterans. As one of the courageous men and women of our military, you have placed the security and freedom of our nation before your own life. On behalf of the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the thousands of Missouri employers we represent, we sincerely thank you and welcome you back home. In an effort to honor you, the men and women who have served our country through military service, the Missouri Chamber is providing this publication to all returning Missouri veterans. We want to lend a hand to you as you return home by connecting you with employment and education opportunities. We want to help put veterans and military spouses on the path of fulfilling careers. When a veteran fills a job, it is a win-win. Hiring veterans is not only a way to support former service members, but it is also a good move for a company by bringing in new, effective employees with valuable skills and experience. Veterans possess unique, real-world skill sets that can add much to our workforce. Veterans are team players who have proven leadership skills in the most challenging environments and demanding situations. When Missouri keeps its veterans by keeping them educated and employed in our state, it is also a win for Missouri. We know that your skills can help Missouri employers succeed, and when Missouri employers succeed, our state continues to grow. For all these reasons, we are proud to provide this publication to you. Although this publication is new, our work to create jobs for hardworking Missourians is as old as the Missouri Chamber of Commerce and Industry itself. It is what our organization is all about.

A Hand-Up for Missouri loves its veterans. We can’t give enough thanks to the men and women in the armed services who have sacrificed so much for our country. When it’s time for them to come home, it’s time for Missouri’s businesses and organizations to step up. We know the transition from the military to civilian life can be difficult, so this resource is designed to help you take the next step, no matter if you’re returning to school, heading into the workforce, making a career change, seeking employment for your spouse, or anything else that relates to your future. This guide’s resources and advice are our small way of saying thank you.
You’ve Got the Advantage When it comes to applying for jobs, veterans are ahead of many applicants. “The managerial skills that are required
to advance in the military are the exact same skills that are desirable in civilian workplaces,” says Jonathan Barry, Director of Show-Me Heroes, a Missouri government workforce program that connects veterans with employers. “Risk management, project management, time management, leadership, and retaining and promoting talent—all of these skills are developed as someone advances in the military.” These skills are often not learned by recent civilian college graduates, so veterans have the edge when applying for certain jobs that require skills that can only be acquired with work experience. “There was a period when military service on a resume was viewed as a negative,” Barry says. “I’d like to think that period is Airman 1st Class Lance Lockett removes a hydraulic line from a thirty-ton jack at Whiteman Air Force Base.
over. There are a lot of employers out there who are looking for men and women with military experience. The 4,000 employers who have taken the Show-Me Heroes pledge are a great example.” The Mission to Train Employers Organizations like Show-Me Heroes and the Veterans Business Resource Center are working to educate employers about

Resume Writing 101 Craft a resume that uses strong action verbs and includes the experience that is most relevant to the position to which you are applying. Barry recommends to avoid using a general resume for every job application. “If you use a generic resume to apply for a job, you’re unlikely to make it through,” Barry says. Barry also notes that some companies use sophisticated computer systems that look for key words. Generic resumes likely won’t have these key words and will be filtered out of the system before a human ever has a chance to see your resume. For more resume writing tips, read more on page 9.
that are interested in joining an initiative like this—for reasons that go deeper than patriotism. Return on investment is reason enough. Businesses should develop a plan to hire veterans, make an effort to understand military culture, and create a vet-friendly application process and work environment. After businesses have hired veterans, they should meet with them periodically throughout the first few months and educate them about expectations, training on the job, and other topics—as employers would do for any employee. Additionally, developing a network where employees with similar experiences and interests can meet and bond is an effective strategy to foster a positive work environment. The success and retention rates of programs for veterans at universities across the nation is a clear indicator that these types of vet-friendly environments also work in the work world. For more information about how businesses can make their offices more veteran-friendly, visit dol.gov/vets/ahaw. Translate Your Experience One of the most frequent questions that veterans ask job search managers is “How do I translate my military experience to a civilian job?” Barry says that he hears that question frequently. But don’t let your experience get lost in translation. The military world is full of acronyms; you should avoid using them on your resume and during interviews. Instead, talk about the leadership skills you gained in the service, talk about how you mastered time management, or elaborate on your ability to find and promote talent.
Left: Members of the 131st Civil Engineer Squadron of the Missouri Air National Guard remove the back railing off of a trailer. Right: A US Air Force Senior Airman wields pieces of metal together at Whiteman Air Force Base.
Or maybe your hands-on skills, like repair, maintenance, and other talents will be a perfect fit for a civilian job where most other employees wouldn’t have that prior training. You have developed a unique set of skills during your military service and should highlight those abilities when applying for a civilian job. Just make sure you are speaking the same language as potential employers. Be a Savvy Job Seeker The digital age is flooded with resources that make it easier than ever to connect veterans to opportunities and assistance. However, the web also makes it easier for scammers to pose as an eager company or resource looking to hire veterans. These scammers are actually trying to take advantage of federal money and prey on eager job-seekers. Remember that no employer will ask for an application fee or require bank information for an application. Be wary of any employer who will not meet you in person. Check with the Better Business Bureau and the Secretary of State to make sure that the company or organization is accredited. Doing your homework isn’t just about watching out for scams. Additionally, job seekers can learn about the company and make sure it’s somewhere they would like to work, Barry says. Doing research on a company goes hand-in-hand with being prepared for an interview.

the benefits of hiring veterans. “Show-Me Heroes is educating employers as well as job seekers,” Barry says. “We educate employers about the benefits of that military experience and what that can bring to the workplace.” The United States Department of Labor also has a six-step toolkit for businesses

Missouri's military employment program, Show-Me Heroes, works to match veterans and service members with available positions at great companies. As a military veteran, you have skills and experience that are valued by Missouri employers. In today's job market, having the advantage of military service on your resume can help push you to the top of the stack. Here are a few tips to showcase your skills and experience and help you stand out to employers.
Resume Writing & Military Experience •
•
Title your resume with your name. In the digital file name, use your name, the open position job title, and company.
•
The longer the career, the longer the resume. Make sure all of the information is relevant, and limit your work history to 10 years.
•
Use language from the job description in your resume. Your resume doesn't get you the job; it gets you the interview.
•
Keep it simple. Use a simple, clean, and consistent format.
•
Don't use an objective statement. Use that space to focus on what you can do for the company. Entice them to call you for an interview.
•
e
s
Tailor your resume to reflect the position for which you're applying. A resume is very specific; it's not a “one-size-fits-all” solution.
•
•
Does your resume pass the 10 second test? When reviewing resumes, employers take less than 10 seconds to determine if you have the qualifications to move to the next stage of the hiring process. 10 seconds! “How can I prove that I’m qualified in 10 seconds?” Use this simple test from social-hire.com to see if your resume would earn an interview. 1) Review the job description, and highlight the five to eight most important skill requirements. 2) Hold the first page of your resume, and fold back the header section: name, address, etc., so that it’s no longer visible.
Hiring managers spend less than 10 seconds assessing your qualifications. Do a 10-second
Avoid using lines and tables to arrange information in your resume. Many companies use applicant tracking systems that scan resumes before a human ever sees them. Many of these programs misread lines and tables, making your resume appear blank. Remove all military jargon and acronyms. Describe your experience in professional language that anyone could understand. Your military experience is a lot more than just your technical training. Be sure to include your management training and leadership skills.
review of your resume to ensure that yours holds up!
3) Still holding the first page, now fold the employment section so that it, too, is no longer visible. 4) What you see is your 10 second resume. Did you pass?

When you first begin your job search, familiarize yourself with the many resources available to veterans. From finances to the final interview, these online resources are great places to plan your future.
Department of Labor The Department of Labor has various online tools that can help veterans transition to civilian life and more. If you’re seeking an apprenticeship that will provide on-the-job-training and incremental wage increases, use My Next Move, Veterans Affairs, or talk to a state apprentice representative. Search the database for listings in your area, or locate programs sponsored by the GI Bill. The site also has resources and assistance for veterans who have lost their jobs. doleta.gov/OA/veterans.cfm GI Bill If education is in your future, visit the US Department of Veterans Affairs online, and learn which institutions are VA-approved. Use their GI Bill Comparison tool, which uses your information to find which schools are most affordable for your unique financial situation. Career Scope can help you explore a career, Decision Guide can help you choose a school, VONAPP can help with the GI Bill application process, the Employment Center can help locate employers, and other tools on the site can assist with questions and concerns about your future. benefits.va.gov/gibill The Military Spouse Corporate Career Network This Better Business Bureau accredited nonprofit connects military personnel and their spouses with careers. Technically Speaking When it comes to information technology, Missouri is on the cutting edge. The Center for Digital Government gave Missouri a grade A rating in its most recent study of tech-forward states. Only two other states received such a designation.
A US Air Force Staff Sergeant and medical laboratory technician conducts a bacterial test.
The center says that states that achieve an A grade have provided a “quantifiable return on investment through IT,” have shown progress during the past two years (Missouri received a B+ two years ago), and use “creative and innovative solutions,” among other measures. Additionally, a study from the Brookings Institute found that jobs in the technology sector take twice as long to fill. It’s no secret that there are far more technology jobs than workers who could fill those jobs, which creates a massive demand for these skills. Consequently, salaries are typically high in this industry. Barry says that information technology, along with advanced manufacturing and the transportation industries, are a few job sectors that are in need of workers, particularly workers with the skill sets acquired in the military. “The technical training and hands-on work experience that veteran service members receive is invaluable,” he says. “These are people who are dealing with technology that may not exist in the civilian world yet. That’s usually the next generation of what’s coming down the pipeline in the civilian world.” Workshop It Many resources, like Show-Me Heroes, provide workshops for veterans. Learn how to navigate a career fair, how to craft the perfect resume, how to develop an elevator speech to sell yourself quickly to an employer, and more.
Top Jobs for Veterans More and more employers are realizing that veterans have the hard and soft skills needed in today’s workforce. Many vets have worked for five or more years but many lack a college degree. However, even without that degree, veterans are more qualified than they might suspect, especially when applying for certain positions. CareerCast.com compiled a list from their annual best and worst job rankings; from that ranking, they tailored these ten top jobs for veterans, which are listed by highest average salary. Training and Development Manager: $95,400 Industrial Production Manager: $89,900 Software Engineer: $85,400 Construction Program Manager: $82,800 Administrative Services Manager: $81,100 Telecommunications Equipment Installer and Repairer: $54,500 Industrial Engineering Technician: $50,900 Paralegal: $47,000 Heavy Tractor-Trailer Truck Driver: $38,200 Emergency Medical Technician: $31,000

Thank you to the Men and Women Who Protect Our Freedoms.
Those who answer the call risk everything so that we might enjoy our way of life. In the process, these heroes often sacrifice so many moments that make our lives meaningful: a child’s first words, a younger brother’s graduation, a meal with family. Though we can never fully repay them, we are proud to give back to our veterans and servicemen and women through our Hy-Vee Homefront programs. From sponsoring Honor Flights to simple thank you breakfast buffets on Veterans Day, we are humbled to serve generations of these extraordinary Americans who have served us. And, we are privileged to recruit and hire them as our co-workers at Hy-Vee. Visit hy-vee.com/homefront today for open positions. We’d be honored to have you join us. To our veterans and members of our military, we thank you.
