Exploring Branson...

It’s been twenty years since I have visited Branson, Missouri. Silver Dollar City Attractions invited our family to enjoy a few days to experience beautiful Branson and all their attractions. The drive was absolutely beautiful seeing all the rolling hills throughout the Ozarks. Once we checked into our hotel we headed to Silver Dollar City and jumped on the biggest rolling hill in Branson! Oh my…the “OUTLAW RUN” left us screaming and wanting to ride again. What a thrill! We spent three days at Silver Dollar City riding rides, taking in shows, unique dining, enjoying craftsmen where we watched them carve life-like wooden figures, glassblower, candy maker, handcrafted knifes and so much more. Next, we visited White Water park, what a fun day in the sun. Incredible water park with lots of rides. Our families favorite was the “OHANA FALLS” a large raft where our whole family could ride down a water slide full of twists and turns. Then we boarded the Showboat Branson Belle - America’s Most Entertaining Dinner Cruise, it was an unforgettable experience for our entire family. We enjoyed a 2-hour cruise on the magnificent Table Rock Lake along with a delicious 3-course meal freshly prepared in the ship’s galley. Enjoyed live music, comedy, magic show and more by Celebrate. We ended our trip visiting the Titanic Museum and walking around the Branson Landing. Titanic was an amazing experience and a must see. Our last stop was Branson Landing absolutely beautiful walking the shops by the waterfront, enjoying fine dining and so much more. A special thank you to Lisa Rau, Director PR/Publicity and Martha Bohner, Senior Publicist of Silver Dollar City Attractions for making our weekend in Branson a memorable one. What a fun mini vacation for our family! I am looking forward too many more summer adventures around the State of Missouri. Thank you for picking up the July summer issue featuring Silver Dollar City Attractions (you must plan a trip there), fashion, summer recipes, exploring Missouri and so much more. We have been having a busy and fun summer with family. Enjoying our kids and grandchildren. Hope you have a safe and wonderful summer with your family and friends! We appreciate all our advertisers, readers and staff that make Missouri Magazine possible. Please feel free to email me with your thoughts and ideas. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you, at the Lake of the Ozarks or around Missouri.

S

howboats first appeared in the early 1800s as an imperial floating palace that brought culture and incredible entertainment from the big cities to America’s country side and provided a show for many families in towns located along the river. The Grand Inaugural of the Showboat Branson Belle took passengers for their first cruise experience on the scenic Table Rock Lake in April, 1995. The majestic Showboat Branson Belle continues to offer the finest way to see the lake. By enjoying a delicious meal prepared fresh on the ship and served directly to your table, you can take pleasure in award-winning, spectacular shows while feasting on a divine cuisine. The Showboat Branson Belle re-creates this 1800’s era with elegant pride by

allowing guests to embark on a journey, returning to a period in America full of adventure, history, and river romance. Opened on May 27th, the Showboat Branson Belle debuted an All-NEW Show—Country on the Lake! Country on the Lake is a live concert and BBQ lunch adventure at noon every day. “The show features rising Nashville stars backed by a live band performing country hits from Kenny Chesney, Rascal Flatts, Little Big Town, Zac Brown Band and many more!” This new show brings forth an all new meal as well: slow-smoked BBQ| from Silver Dollar City’s pitmasters, loaded mashed potatoes, grilled corn with roasted peppers and apple cinnamon ice cream pie. It truly is a historical party on the lake that you won’t want to miss out on! July 2017 | Missouri Magazine |

SAFE BOATING TIPS

No matter how much experience you have, it’s always a good idea for everyone to review boating safety rules before departures. Basic boating safety tips to help you stay safe: Be Weather-Wise Always check local weather conditions before departure; TV and radio forecasts can be a good source of information. If you notice darkening clouds, volatile and rough changing winds or sudden drops in temperature, play it safe by getting off the water.

Follow a Pre-Departure Checklist Proper boating safety includes being prepared for any possibility on the water. Following a pre-departure checklist is the best way to make sure no boating safety rules or precautions have been overlooked or forgotten.

Use Common Sense One of the most important parts of boating safety is to use your common sense. This means operating at a safe speed at all times (especially in crowded areas), staying alert at all times and steering clear of large vessels and watercraft that can be restricted in their ability to stop or turn. Also, be respectful of buoys and other navigational aids, all of

which have been placed there to ensure your own safety.

Designate an Assistant Skipper Make sure more than one person on board is familiar with all aspects of your boat’s handling, operations, and general boating safety. If the primary navigator is injured or incapacitated in any way, it’s important to make sure someone else can follow the proper boating safety rules to get everyone else back to shore.

Develop a Float Plan Whether you choose to inform a family member or staff at your local marina, always be sure to let someone else know your float plan. This should include where you’re going and how long you’re going to be gone. A float plan can include the following information: name, address, and phone number of trip leader name and phone number of all passengers boat type and registration information trip itinerary

Learn to Swim If you’re going to be in and around the water, proper boating safety includes knowing how to swim. Local organizations, such as the American Red Cross and others, offer training for all ages and abilities. Check to see what classes are offered in your area.

Take a Boating Course Beginning boaters and experienced experts alike need to be familiar with the boating safety rules of operation. Boater education requirements vary by state; however, some require validated completion of at least one boating safety course. Regardless of your individual state’s requirements, it’s always important to be educated and prepared for every circumstance that might arise. You can learn boating safety rules by taking a local community course or online course to help educate yourself.

Consider a Free Vessel Safety Check Take advantage of a free vessel safety check from the US Coast Guard. They offer complimentary boat examinations to verify the presence and condition of certain safety equipment required by state and federal regulations. Free of charge, they’ll provide a specialist to check out your boat and make helpful boating safety tips and recommendations. They also offer virtual online safety checks as well.

Make Proper Use of Lifejackets Did you know that the majority of drowning victims are the result of boaters not wearing their lifejackets? Make sure that your family and friends aren’t part of this statistic by assigning and fitting each member of your onboard team with a life jacket prior to | departure. Wear it!

Our exclusive interview with Bella Boutique Missouri Owner, Amanda White “I’ve been interested in fashion since as early on in my life that I can remember. I’ve always enjoyed shopping and putting together outfits and accessories.” |

July 2017 | Missouri Magazine |

What leading designers do you offer your customers?

How long have you been a business owner?

We carry a variety of boutique brands. Always adding new items.

I have been a business owner for 7 years.

Who would be your fashion role model/Icon?

What inspires you to keep up with the current fashion trends?

My role model in fashion is looking around what people are wearing in all areas of the country and try to bring in different pieces that are unique and fashion forward. What’s your career or educational background in the fashion industry?

I have zero! Through high school I worked at different clothing retailers at the mall. Then worked for the City of Eldon, State of Missouri and for a law firm. What are some major setbacks that you’ve had in this particular business, that you had to overcome?

My husband just recently retired after 23 years in the military. I’d say my biggest setback has been relocating for his pcs moves and having to start all over in a new location. Learning the area, styles and trends. Finding a new location etc. However, a lot of my clientele have followed me over the years and still shop with me. 24

|

Missouri Magazine | July 2017

I love being able to offer fun and unique trends. I’m on the lookout 24/7. It’s something that I look at when I’m watching TV, at an outing, scrolling through the internet. I want my customers to feel amazing in everything they get and it still be affordable. What are your beauty secrets?

I dress for comfort, no beauty secrets lol. What’s your favorite item in your wardrobe?

My favorite items in my wardrobe would have to be a wrap bracelet, I’ve had for two years. I wear it every single day. It says “if you can dream it, you can accomplish it”. What motivates you to come here everyday to continue to do what you’re doing?

My friends and customers! I don’t look at this like a job, I love it. I

wake up every morning. Wondering who may walk through the door and how I can make their day more enjoyable. I enjoy visiting with everyone that walks through my front door, I love being able to select outfits and accessories for someone for a special occasion or a just because I need a new outfit day, or to help someone find that perfect gift. I have several ladies that come in several times a week just to visit and I cherish those times and to hear about what’s going on in their lives. What are you wearing today?

I’m wearing my favorite pair of denim from the store with my new sparkly shoes we just got in. My two favorite wardrobe pieces. My bracelet is my favorite thing I own. It reminds me of my dad. Both of my parents have always pushed me to do my best and always given me their support. My dad is my biggest supporter and my sound of reason. He’s the one that I listen to if I’m ever in doubt or just need advice. My wonderful husband has always supported me and stood behind me every time I have a crazy idea. He’s very supportive of me and my dreams and he knows that I love what I do and it makes me happy.

The middle of July, heat index topping 95 degrees at 8 o’clock in the evening, cows mooing, kids buzzing and the smell of funnel cakes in the air can only mean one thing in Missouri…the county fair. by Kelsie Ferguson

A

mber Singer has already parked her camper, unloaded her boys’ 4-H projects, and has started to lay down a bed of straw for the show cattle when she gets a call from her husband … “Yes, you can spray them down… Yep, I’m sure it’s OK… OK thanks… See you soon. ”

10:15am “Breakfast.” 11:00am Quittin’ Time – “Everything!” She jokes. “Keeping everyone moving forward, helping where I can, taking lunch, mowing hay, raking hay, going to town to get parts, checking crops. That’s my job.”

makes her adamant about raising her family as an ag family? “What better way to live? It really is a wonderful lifestyle that teaches our kids real life skills that they will have forever. My 13 year-old is constantly checking the weather and market prices. He makes sure to let his dad know

Buddy and Amber Singer from rural Hale, MO are in the business of raising boys, cattle, chickens, ducks, hay and row crops. Amber does not let being the only woman on the farm keep her from being involved in the family business. I was able to hang out with Amber in the cattle barn at the Livingston County fair grounds so I asked her what a normal day looked like for her on the Singer Farm. 6:00am “We round up the show cattle and bring them in. Yes, we feed our animals before we feed ourselves.” She says with a smile. “On Sunday’s we usually ‘meal prep’ for the animals and we will weigh their food out all at once so it makes it easier for us during the week.” 7:00am – 9:00am “We take the show cows on a walk, then wash, brush and blow out their hair every day. We make sure they are standing for two hours.” 9:30am – 10:00am “The boys then chore their ducks and chickens.”

Farm life really is something new every day. In addition to her dual roles of Mom and Farmhand, Singer has had to change her way of thinking from “checking things off of a to-do list” to “organized priorities” in order to keep her family and operation successful. “Our work is never done, so you really have to prioritize to keep going. When we are between fields, I will stop by the house and throw something in the slow cooker. Or if we are in the area to move equipment, I will run in the house and switch the laundry.” What makes Singer love the farm life? What

when we need to sell to make the most money! Our boys (ages 13, 8 and 6) aren’t just learning how to change fuel filters on old John Deere tractors, they’re learning that you can still be successful by working with what you have and by being good to the land.” As for the County Fair season, the Singers attend 10-12 cattle shows per year. “We want our boys be good stewards to the land and animals and the only way for them to learn is for them to be hands on in the operation and to let them have responsibilities. There are so many opportunities within 4H and FFA that kids can learn; it’s not just about

the livestock. By the end of the summer, our boys will have participated in: public speaking, judging, showing, photography and sewing. The fair is a learning opportunity and it helps them to enhance personal growth and it also establishes relationships that they do not get on the farm. It gets them out of their comfort zone, meeting new people and building relationships.” Carrying On.. “I try to be as encouraging as I can with my family – giving credit where credit is due because the daily workload can be tiring. I know this lifestyle can be challenging and I am so thankful that we can do it as a team. Our boys see Buddy and I working together everyday and it gives them an example on how to work together. Buddy is the fourth generation farmer on our farm and as we grow and expand, we are calculating every move towards success because we want this to be a place that our boys can come back to live and work, if they choose.” As I watched her go back to work, it’s obvious the love Singer has for her family and her Missouri farm. Her modest look: gold band, no makeup, | messy bun and “Mom of Boys” T-Shirt is a perfect representation of the Missouri Farm Wife. She wears her role with pride…through and through! Real American Lager Kräftig prides itself on being real American lager, but what exactly does that mean? A staple of Bavarian culture for centuries, lager first appeared in the United States around 1840 and quickly became the most popular beer choice for brewers and drinkers alike. Although its popularity waned as breweries began infusing new flavors into porters, ales, and stouts, lager has experienced a renaissance of sorts in recent years. Simply put, the style is‌ well‌ back in style and better than ever! 32

|

Missouri Magazine | July 2017

Here are six facts about the best beer style around (okay, we’re a little biased) and why you should drink Real American lager: ONE – The first lagers in America were not for sale. When Bavarian immigrant John Wagner began brewing lager in Philadelphia, he was only making it to bring a taste of home to his friends, family, and neighbors. TWO – As German immigrants began moving into more cities throughout the country, they brought the style with them. Breweries and biergartens began to appear, offering immigrants the chance to

preserve their heritage while introducing other Americans to a more relaxed, Sunday afternoon type of drinking. THREE – The Civil War helped spread the lager’s popularity. Over 200,000 German-Americans served in the Union Army during the war, bringing their favorite beer with them. Several units in the army consisted of young men from both rural and urban areas, allowing soldiers who had never tasted lager, let alone heard of it, to enjoy the beer with their peers – making it a truly American drink. FOUR – As the lager’s popularity rose, several breweries began

producing adjunct lager with cereal grains such as rice and corn. Although this approach cut costs and allowed for massproduction of the beer, it also cut flavor. FIVE – Unlike its adjunct lager counterparts, Kräftig maintains the traditional, pure German style to honor the German culture’s influence on American beer. No rice. No corn. Just hops, barley, yeast, and water, creating a clean, crisp beer that focuses on maintaining the utmost quality. SIX – As more and more drinkers realize that lager doesn’t have to be synonymous with flat, stale flavor, American

lagers have experienced a resurgence in popularity. When produced with only the highest quality of ingredients, lagers and light lagers like Kräftig are among the most refreshing styles of beer. The balance of quality flavor and refreshment makes Kräftig the perfect beer to drink this summer. As the summer months drag on, grab a Kräftig and learn the true meaning of real American lager: cool, hydrating, and absolutely delicious.

I am an old soul, travel junkie, lover of God and people, with a heart of gold that sometimes gets overlooked because of my constant witty comments. I am a self taught photographer who would love to capture your beautiful moments. My passion for this started back in middle school when I was taking pictures of a trampoline ladder with my toes still in the picture... off my iPhone 3G. Thankfully I am no longer shooting pictures of my toes off cheap phone cameras. I’ve upgraded, evolved, and found my personal style. I love natural light, creative portraits, and candid photographs. I’ve found my style and my love for capturing people at their most raw and real points. I am always looking to better myself and to push myself while still capturing your most valuable moments that will last you a lifetime!

fashion

Every year Pantone chooses a new “Color of the Year” which is this year’s overall symbolic color selection. Pantone For a more casual approach to the color of the provides this color as an insight as to year, try airing out either a tight fitting or what we see taking place in our global flowy green dress. From a light forest culture that serves as an expression green to a dark emerald color, feel of a mood or an attitude. Last free to wear whatever shade you year’s Color of the Year was want and be confident in your a mixture between Serenity green dress. Whether your and Rose Quartz, but this ...a refreshing and dress is completely solid or year, Pantone chose this only has a few select spots of revitalizing shade, year’s Natural Neutral green, any addition of color color, Greenery. Greenery is symbolic will brighten up your outfit and create a more playful of new beginnings. According to Leatrice look. Eiseman, the Executive

Director of the Pantone Color Institute, “a refreshing and revitalizing shade, Greenery is symbolic of new beginnings. Greenery is a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens revive, restore and renew. Illustrative of flourishing foliage and the lushness of the great outdoors, the fortifying attributes of Greenery signals consumers to take a deep breath, oxygenate and reinvigorate.”

With today’s society constantly being hectic and overwhelming, here are a few ways you can bring this year’s color into your summer wardrobe and household décor in order to create a calm and relaxing vibe in your everyday life.

When it comes to Greenery, less is always more so try to make your green item more of an accent piece by pairing it with material that is subtler in color. When wearing a green jacket or skirt, try complimenting it with a tighter pair of blue jeans or a black shirt and a headband. When doing this, it allows the green item to pop without clashing with any other items in your wardrobe. Another way that you can incorporate Greenery into your wardrobe

without wearing an entirely green outfit is through your accessories! A lot of vintage jewelry found in antique shops are either green or have a green tint to them and create a unique and beautiful look to any outfit. When shopping for greenery shoes or handbags, texture becomes extremely important. Snakeskin or satin fabrics can add a more expensive look when you need to appear more professional for work or for a date. Either through earrings, pendants, or your choice of a handbag, adding just a dash of greenery will subtly brighten any outfit up and create a unique look for the day! Deep greens work particularly well in the colder months when paired with a crisp white shirt and darker brown leather accessories. This outfit creates a

more relaxed feel and will make a better impression than a standard suit at any occasion or office event. The green offers an outfit with more personality and creativity. If you want to try out the color of the year without going for a fully green look, try wearing a green blazer or a jacket of some sort. Wool overcoats look fresh and classic while a bomber or suede jacket will give off more of a formal feel when designed with a green hue. Any type of jacket pairs well with black or blue pants, so you won’t need to worry about purchasing any other item to make the green color work.

A plain t-shirt, whether dark green or light green, is an easy way to incorporate the color as well without going too overboard with the bright shade. When paired with a tan hat or any other subtle brown accessory and dark jeans, there’s no way you can go wrong. No matter how you decide to wear Greenery, keep in mind to embrace the color and be adventurous! 54

Whether it’s used in solid colors or in textural prints, here are a few ways you can freshen up your living areas and create an overall brighter home! If you want to take a big step with Greenery, try decorating your walls or accent walls and create an eye-catching pop of color to your space. Green walls help blend the furniture and create a more modern, up-todate, living space for any room. Whether you decorate the room with paint or with wallpaper, adding a touch of color draws the attention to that one wall and opens the space, making it seem a lot larger than it is. navy, hot pink, black and white, or a deep purple and creates a beautifully bold living environment.

There’s no better way to incorporate Greenery in your interior space than by bringing the outdoors inside. Whether you want to create a lush green area indoors or just place a few fresh plants around your space, you can easily get this unique hue right from the source! Even if you don’t like having living plants around the house, you can add pops of color to any area of your home with faux| foliage. 10 TIPS

for Selecting Outdoor Furniture

by Lidancie Arts

When you’re creating a fun and functional entertainment patio, you need great outdoor furniture that fits your style. After all the effort you put into building your outdoor patio, complimenting it with the right furniture gives you the perfect place to relax. To select the best outdoor furniture for your outdoor entertainment area, start with these helpful tips.

ONE

Consider the space’s function Start by considering how you want the outdoor area to function. Will it be a dining area, a living room style space or combination of both? Create a list of the activities you plan on doing in the space and use that to determine the kind of outdoor furniture you purchase.

TWO

Try out the furniture Before purchasing any outdoor furniture for your patio, try it out by sitting on it and moving it around, if possible. Some outdoor furniture looks pleasing to the eye but can be uncomfortable or too heavy to move easily.

THREE

Choose low maintenance To promote the idea of a fun and relaxing space, choose low maintenance exterior furniture that won’t keep you painting, sanding and cleaning for hours annually. Outdoor furniture designs made from rattan, teak or metal are durable and require minimal upkeep.

FOUR

Consider storage needs To keep your outdoor furniture looking its best, you need a place to store it when you’re not using it. As durable as outdoor furniture can be, it still benefits and has a longer lifetime if you store it out of the

56

|

Missouri Magazine | July 2017

elements when appropriate. Foldable patio furniture or furniture that’s easy to take apart are good options.

FIVE

Incorporate color Outdoor furniture comes in a wide selection of colors, which means you’re not restricted to using natural wood tones or neutral colors such as white or beige. Choosing colorful cushions or finishes for your outdoor furniture creates a space that expresses your own personal style.

SIX

Fit the furniture to the space Overcrowding a patio with furniture is unattractive and can inhibit the flow of foot traffic. Place enough furniture in the space to provide comfort without overcrowding it. If you need additional space, consider extending your entertainment area into the lawn or garden.

SEVEN

Quality over quantity While it may cost less to buy several pieces of plastic chairs and tables for your patio, they’re not designed for durability or longevity. It’s better to invest in quality pieces that can withstand regular use and the elements without fading or suffering damage. Look for online reviews of the outdoor furniture you’re considering and ask your neighbors what has worked best for them.

EIGHT

Multipurpose furniture Even if your patio has ample space, it’s a good idea to invest in multipurpose outdoor furniture. Ottomans that serve as a central table can convert to extra seating or foot rests at needed. A simple bench that provides casual seating can be pulled up to a dining table for those extra guests. That round side table can provide an additional surface for eating in a pinch.

NINE Add a rug

Placing the right rug amid indoor furniture can help tie a room together, and the same holds true for an outdoor space. Finding a quality, all-weather rug that coordinates with your outdoor furniture can provide cushioning underfoot and a cooler surface to walk on than a bare patio on a sunny day. In addition, an outdoor rug can bring the entire outdoor space together in style.

TEN

Provide shade On hot days, the sun can become too warm to remain outside for very long on your patio. Purchase attractive patio umbrellas or partial enclosures that coordinate with your outdoor furniture and provide needed shade. By selecting the right outdoor furniture for your patio, you can create an area that everyone will enjoy during nice weather.
