Fry Speech Contest under way By Cpl. Manuel Camargo
The Wallace Fry Speech is an important part of each year’s Missouri Military Academy Commencement exercises. The speech has to be on a topic of interest, and all cadets in the school write an essay about what they believe is an important issue. Students have been preparing their speeches since the beginning of February. Some of the themes this year are euthanasia, the death penalty and effects of
obesity on society. MMA English teacher Capt. Pamela Ray commented, “There is talent in this year’s contestants, and it will be a tough decision.” Cadet Lance Cpl. Cody Callahan wrote his speech on use of herbal supplements. He said, “I try to prove that herbal supplements are good and can help people.” Semifinals are April 17. Finalists will speak at MMA Commencement exercises.

Capt. Samuel Blair, ‘94, and MMA Director of Admissions Maj. Dennis Diedrich each spoke in recognition of cadet Cpl. Hugh Carnahan, who visited China and Taiwan during the fall to represent the school and helped the Admissions Department staff with language translation. Maj. Peggy Reynard was also honored for her exceptional recruiting efforts. Maj. Reynard and Carnahan joined Alex Cheng as current faculty and cadets in the Ambassadors Club. “I enjoyed the banquet. It was a great way to get together with my friends,” said Staff Sgt. Giuseppe Poletti of Vigevano, Italy. “We learned how our actions have an important impact in the Academy’s development, and it’s really rewarding to know that we are helpful to the school in one way or another.” The Cadet Ambassadors program not only helps in keeping enrollment rates high, but also diversifies and enriches the Corps of Cadets.

Delta claims ‘Golden Boot’ with victory at annual Army Days By Master Sgt. Anuar Duayhe Aiza
The annual Army Days competition was held April 6-8 on the back campus of Missouri Military Academy. Army Days is an activity organized and directed by the JROTC department of the Academy. During Army Days, cadets go through various competitions around the campus, supervised by MMA staff, which gives Army Days a feeling of real Army training for the participating cadets. On the first day of Army Days, cadets are challenged physically through a tough set of exercises known as “The Cadet Challenge.” The challenge
includes pushups, sit-ups, pull-ups, a one-mile run, shuttle run and a Swiss seat event. The Swiss seat is a rope which is tied around the body like a device to climb, rappel and cross the rope bridge. “The events requiring the Swiss seat, are definitely my favorite,” said Cpl. Carlos Davila of Reynosa, Mexico. On the second day, High School cadets completed a road run in full BDUs with their rifles. On the final day, the National Guard brought several military vehicles, Humvees, light armor assault vehicles and a Black Hawk helicopter for cadets to examine and appreciate the wide range of technological devices
the vehicles carry. The last day’s competitions included the rappelling tower, rope bridge, obstacle course and tug-of-war. This year’s company champion was Delta, which received the “Golden Boot” trophy and narrowly edged out Charlie for bragging rights. “The 2006 Army Days were a great success, and yet another interactive and fun activity for cadets to embrace before the end of the year,” said 1st Sgt. Greg Seibert. The Middle School held its Army Days competitions on Friday afternoon, April 7.

Band tops division at St. Pat’s Parade
ST LOUIS -- The Missouri Military Academy Fusileers, Marching Band, National Color Guard and International Color Guard traveled to St Louis to participate in the prestigious annual St Patrick’s Parade on Saturday, March 11. The band earned first place among 2A division high schools. “For me, there is enormous satisfaction to come to St Louis and represent M.M.A., and what better than a famous parade like the St Patrick’s Parade,” said Master Sgt Jonathan Avelar. Every year nearly 1,000 participants step off at noon from the corner of Broadway and Washington Ave. in
St. Louis. They marched for approximately three miles up Market Street until reaching the reviewing stand and finish line at St. Louis Union Station. “It was an extreme honor for Missouri Military Academy Band, Color Guard and Fusileers to be asked to assist one more time in the St. Patrick’s Day Parade,” said Col. Dana Reynard, band director. “I believe they did an outstanding job.” MMA has a long tradition of participating in the St. Patrick’s Day celebration, and has been consistently decorated as the Best Division 2A High School Marching Band by parade judges.
The Missouri Military Academy entry in the annual St. Louis St. Patrick’s Day Parade brought home first place in its classification again this year. MMA was represented by the MMA Marching Band, National and International Color Guards and the Fusileers precision drill team on March 11 in St. Louis.
Admissions continue to run ahead of last year’s pace
Enrollment of cadets for the fall semester at Missouri Military Academy continues to run well ahead of the same date in 2005. MMA Director of Admissions Maj. Dennis Diederich said, “It is important for families of cadets to complete and return the enrollment contracts right away, if they are interested in securing the need-based grants to supplement tuition.” Maj. Diederich went on to say the applications for financial aid must be completed immediately to meet the deadline of May 1. Any remaining financial aid funds will be made available to new boys after that date. Additional scholarship and grant funds made available by the MMA Board of Trustees have caused great interest in early application.

tary Academy defeated Fulton, 6-3, under blustery conditions April 3 at Fulton High School. For MMA, Carmichael and Legoretta both won singles matches by 10-8 scores, and Perilli and Gilberto Garcia posted 10-4 wins. In doubles, Carmichael teamed with Cano for a 10-7 win, and brothers Alain and Gilberto Garcia were victorious by a 10-7 score. “I was very proud of our effort tonight,” said Capt. Pemberton. “Without our no. 2 (Mendez) in the lineup, most of our players had to play up one spot in the roster.
win. In doubles, Mendez and Cano teamed for a 7-5, 6-0 win, and Carmichael combined with Bryant Pate to drop a marathon 4-6, 7-5, 9-11 tiebreaker match. The no. 1 doubles match was stopped at 6-6, due to lack of light. “I was very pleased with our effort today. Yarigin played an outstanding match against a very good player for Mexico High School,” said Capt. Pemberton. *** JEFFERSON CITY -- Mis-

Baseball team gets off to 2-2 start for coach Capt. Syed The 2006 Missouri Military Academy varsity baseball team roster includes Shaun Mueller, Mike Lee, Stratton King, Thomas Mennemeyer, Kyle Caperton, Matt Graves, Carlton Krause, Nick Bahan, Bobby Kelley, Denis Arseneau, Eric Detmer, Joao Pintoribeiro, Nathan Malone, Alex Bozarth, Alex Hoke, Nicholas Poor, Josh Olson, Jose Flores, Logan Branch and Maurico Ayala. Team captains are Lee, Mueller and Mennemeyer. Lee is the starting shortstop and no. 2 pitcher, Mueller is the no. 1 pitcher and a first baseman, and Mennemeyer is starting at catcher. Capt. Ali Syed is the head coach, assisted by Lt. Darin Davis. Lee said the team is full of athletes who have great talent this year There are 15 games. The starting line-up for the opening game was Mueller as pitcher, Mennemeyer catcher, Krause at first base, Bahan at second base, Lee at shortstop, Kelley at third base, Caperton in left field, King in centerfield and Hoke in right field. MMA will host seven games
and have eight away. *** HIGBEE -- Missouri Military Academy opened its 2006 baseball season with a 6-1 victory at Higbee on March 28. Mueller pitched six innings with eight strike outs to get the win. “Our defensive unit supported the pitcher, making key plays to get Mueller out of a jam quite a few times,” said Capt. Syed. “We committed two errors, which is not too bad for the first game of the season. “We still have a lot of work to do on offense. We need to work on plate discipline and be more agressive as base runners.” Lee closed the seventh inning on the mound for MMA, and Capt. Syed said he was “pleased with his pitching as well.” *** MMA improved to 2-0 with a 15-7 victory over Logos High School on March 30 at Brad Calvert Field. “ Lee did a pretty good job as
a starting pitcher and struck out seven batters,” said Capt. Syed. “This was not our best defensive game as we committed quite a few errors. “We played well on offense. The guys were patient and took care of business at the plate.” Sophomore Krause had three hits and four runs, and senior Lee had four hits and three runs to lead MMA batters. *** Community R-6 defeated Missouri Military Academy, 4-3, in baseball action April 4 at Brad Calvert Field. Community held a quick 4-0 lead before an MMA rally came up short. “We had a lot of opportunities to tie the game, but we just could not get any hits,” said Capt. Syed. “We struggled offensively. Our big hitters just could not put the ball in play to tie or win the game.” *** MMA lost to Harrisburg R-8 at home on April 5, 14-1. The Colonels jayvee also fell, 10-0.
Senior trip to Outback in Columbia set for April 19 Wednesday, April 19, the 2006 Missouri Military Academy senior class will take a trip to Outback steakhouse in Columbia. It is a chance for the seniors to have a night out and enjoy a nice meal together. The trip is sponsored by Jim and Ann Day, parents of the late Zach Day, ’03. Lt. Col. Paul Gillette, director of institutional
advancement, set up the event. Student body president 1st Lt. Jose Rosales said, “I think that we will have fun with this trip. Now that we know the date, we can start getting excited about it. I know that all the seniors will be able to go to this, so I am very optimistic they will all go and have a good time.”
