Reflections in a wall: Missouri Military Academy students imagine the life stories that lie hidden behind the faceless names engraved in the Illinois Vietnam Memorial... and ponder their own futures. Photo by John Davis
Much of who we are remains . . . CONFIDENTIAL, even to those who know us well. To friends, teachers, family, and acquain tances, our lives — often — appear to be just reflections of our real self that is hidden in our hearts.
2 Opening
i
To The Searcher of Men's Hearts O God, our Father, Thou Searcher of men’s hearts, help us to draw near to Thee in sincerity and truth. May our religion be filled with gladness and may our worship of Thee be sincere. Strengthen and increase our admiration for honest living and clean thinking. Encourage us in our endeavor to live above the common level of life. Help us choose the harder right instead of the easier wrong. Endow us with the courage that is born of loyalty to all that is noble and worthy. Protect our homes, our loved ones, and those engaged in defending the liberty of our nation. All this we ask in the name of the Great Friend and Master of Men. Amen. - "The Cadet Prayer" from the "Missouri Military Academy Cadet Handbook 1990-91, p. 1 "The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us." - I Corinthians 2:10-
"The purposes of a man's heart are deep waters, but a man of understanding draws them out." Proverbs 20:5 "When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. For now we see but a poor reflection; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love." I Corinthians 13:12

Dad's Weekend: Info exchange with parents For the first time since their arrival on campus, cadets had the opportunity to "share information" face to face with their dads and moms. Approximately 1,000 parents, families members and guests of cadets filled the campus to celebrate the 43rd annual Dad's Weekend. Four cadets won awards in competitive drills: Jose Ortiz, Tampico, Mexico, and Jason Bryant, Jacksonville, Illinois, were selected the best-drilled high school cadets. Javier Menendez, Miami, Florida, and Carlos Gonzalez, Nubia, Mexico, were selected the best-drilled Junior School cadets. The varsity Colonels soccer squad scored three goals in the first half against a tough Buchanan High defense and upped their record to 7-3 with a 3-0 win over the Trojans in athletic action. Concurrently on the back campus, the MMA cross country team clinched the State Military title, placing
five of six top finishers against Kemper Military. The intramural Echo Gol den Warriors' quarterback sweep touchdown and points after proved to be the only points scored in their 80 victory over the Alpha Green Wave. The Junior School Eagles edged out the rival Lions 6-0. In a tough-fought gridiron contest, the Wentworth Military Academy Red Dragons beat the varsity Colonels 136. Twenty-two cadets were presented the coveted Academic Wreath and Star dur ing Dad's Weekend review in recognition of their ranking in the top 10 percent of ROTC classes for the 198990 year. Dad's Weekend ceremonies concluded at 6:30 p. m. Sunday evening with a Vespers service conducted for cadets, parents and guests by MMA Chaplain Richard Ash and cadets Jeffrey Schweickert and Steven Mitchell.

Don Stewart As the time for graduation drew near, the "Old Boys" who have al ready gone through a graduation anxiously anticipated the playing of Echo Taps and the B.C. yelling "dis missed!" The seniors were forced to think back over their years at MMA and write their final words. For me, at least, these are the hardest words to write because I want to cover every thing yet don't know what to say.
All I really have to say is, "Make the best of it." Especially to you peo ple who always say "I'm definitely not coming back," and always do end up coming back. If you just do what you can to have fun and stay out of trouble, life here won't be so bad. Delta Phi 4. MP 4. Company Football 3, 4. Company Basketball 3, 4. Honor Company 3, 4.
Joshua Sussman One night a man had a dream. He dreamed he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand: one belong ing to him, and the other to the Lord. When the last scene of his life flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints in the sand. He no ticed that many times along the path of his life there was only one set of footprints. He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and sad dest times in his life. This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it. "Lord, you said that once I decided to follow you, you'd walk with me all the way. But I have noticed that during the

most troublesome times of my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why, when I need ed you most, you would leave me." The Lord replied, "My precious, precious child, I love you and would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you saw only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you." - Margaret Fishback Powers Thank you to MMA, my family and friends, without whom I'd still be walking the beach wondering about both sets of footprints. "The Fusileers have improved a great deal since the beginning of the year and certainly worked very hard to achieve this championship," Capt. Mark Vaughan, director, said. The Academy drill team, winners of the 1990 GTTWDM Honor Platoon Trophy, brought home the cup for a second straight year as Rafael Beverido led the team to a first place in the Infan try Drill Regulation Without Weapons and Mario Trevino commanded the squad to a first place in the Platoon In fantry Drill Regulation With Weapons. El Soccer! El Soccer! The national sport of many of the world's Latin American countries brought its Spanish flavor and lightning-fast action to the MMA campus with great gusto in the fall of 1990. Rapido! Under the skillful direction of Head Coach Capt. Richard Twells and Assistant Coach Lt. Todd Greenberg, the Colonels Soccer Squad ran roughshod over a number of regional, and rival military, teams and held their own against state-caliber squads from Columbia, St. Louis and Jefferson City on their way to a 9-5 season. Forwards Rafael Beverido and Oscar Fukuda each scored two goals Oct. 29 as the Colonels blew past Win field 7-0 on their way to the second round of the Class 1A-3A District 5 Championships in St. Charles where they fell to Duchesne. "That's about as well as we can play," Coach Twells said of the one-sided victory over the Winfield Warriors. "I was pleased with the way we pressured their goal." MMA scored quickly in the first half on a fast break shot by Beverido. Sweeper Brett Swade scored another in the 9th minute on a penalty kick and Fukuda tacked on a third goal with a point-blank shot shortly before half time. Victory at district!

Amassing 253 yards total of fense, the MMA football Colo nels shut out the Kemper Yel lowjackets 23-0 at Boonville, Nov. 2, to retain the coveted Gold Football for the 21st straight year. Leaving the Kemper defense behind on a reverse, wide re ceiver Victor Trevino opened up a 6-0 lead for MMA with a 20-yard run eight minutes into the first quarter. Playing cor nerback on defense, Trevino also intercepted two passes. Academy quarterback Chandler Moore completed five of eight passes for 106 yards and guided the team to several scoring opportunities. Playing his last game for the gridiron Colonels, the MMA senior kicked a 21-yard field goal to put his team up 9-0. In the second quarter, Moore fooled the Kemper defense twice for touchdowns — once with a six-yard quarterback bootleg and later with a thread-the-needle 58-yard pass to receiver Ian Wolfe with 47 seconds left in the half. The reception was Wolfe's lone catch of the season, but it went the distance! MMA guard Matt Beach and tackle Jar}' Dawson — moving back to that position from fullback — bulldozed gaping - holes in the Yellowjacket defensive line to make room for tailback Nick Turner and wingback Justin Hildebrand. Both . averaging nearly four yards a carry, the pair gained 98 yards on 25 carries. The Colonels defense also rose to the occasion, holding Kemper to 77 total yards and picking off three interceptions and a fumble.

George Foxworth, the Delta Blue Devils achieved their second straight undefeated season and earned the coveted company football championship. Compiling a 4-0 record, Delta blasted Maj. Ron Rosendahl's Echo Golden Warriors in the Nov. 1 champion ship game 22-0. They also edged by "E" Company by the score of 8-2 earlier in the season, handing the 2-2 Warriors their only regular-season loss. The Blue Devils steamrolled over the undermanned Charlie Red Raiders 66-0 on Oct. 16. Lt. Greg Pauley's Charlie team had a season record of 0-4. "Some games I felt like the other team could have walked off the field and we wouldn't have been able to score," Coach Pauley said of his team which failed to reach the end zone all season. Due to the necessity of fielding a nine-man "C" Com pany squad, all the other teams played eight-man football against them in intramural action. The Alpha Green Wave, coached by Staff Sgt. Domie Ballesteros, finished with a 2-2 record, shutting out Char lie 26-0 their first game, but then falling 8-0 to Echo and 20-6 to Delta.

Tennis number one spot. Bev and Rod are both juniors, so . . . maybe next year! The Colonels sinking of the Hannibal Pirates 8-1 April 26 was typical of many matches during the stellar season. Capturing five of six singles matches and all three doubles contests, they left their riverside opponents fishing for driftwood in the Mississippi after all was said and done. Francisco Arias defeated his Hannibal opponent 6-0, 6-0; Juan Carreon 6-1, 6-2; Beverido 6-1, 6-1; Rodriguez 6-2, 6-0; and Matt Crook 6-0, 6-3.

M. P. s & Color Guard The Military Police stood in the shadows for numerous events all year, providing service and security for visitors and the Academy students and staff. At the Dad's Day, Valentine's Day, Tulip and Final Balls, they were there, directing traffic, pro viding answers, keeping an eye open. One visitor to the campus dur ing Dad's Weekend commented on the M. P. who stood at the top of MMA's front drive, blowing the whistle and directing traffic, "I sure would hate to be that kid who stands there in the driveway and guards the cannon." Fortunately, the M. Yeah! What could be more fun than skipping Sat urday morning inspection and drill, putting on some | army field regs and heading down to Ft. Leonard Wood to make a day of it. Six Flags was never quite like this. The meal was great, the bus rides down and back were fun, but nothing compared with that old Obsta cle Course. Boy howdy! There were giant ladders you had to climb up to the sky, barbed wire pits to crawl through, the notori ous Belly Buster — nearly impossible to go over, and rope climbing and swinging. And to top it all off, Sgts. Ballesteros and Fox worth accompanied us and "showed us how it was done." It really was "Some Fun!" Photos by Lee Merrill

The Junior School calendar for 1990-91 was filled with athletic events for every season, military drills and performances, field trips close to home and far away, and seasonal events for every phase of the year. The soccer team had a very successful year under the athletic tutelage of Capt. Kleinsorge. They defeated the Fulton team on their home field and "improved all season," the coach said. The military drills and marching began Day 1 and continued with Dad's Day, Homecoming, Mother's Day and Commencement performances. Field trips took Junior School cadets to the Hanni bal hydroelectric plant, the St. Louis Zoo, Cahokia Indi an Mounds, Optec D. D. manufacturing — and vacation trips to ski resorts in the Rockies of Colorado and vaca tion parks in Florida.

Junior Schoolers take their football seriously. By the way, so do their coaches’ The traditional rivalry between the Eagles and the Lions was as fierce and en thusiastic in 1990 as ever. Turning the tables on the 1989 season, Lt. James Winkelmann's Eagles took their first possession of the season Dad's Weekend and drove sixty yards to hit pay dirt. Their five-yard quarterback keeper proved to be the game winner as the talon group shut out the Capt. Jon Eastman's clawed squad 6-0. The Eagles turned in two more very close victories to end the season Nov. 1 at 3-0. The Brigadiers drill squad saw some exciting action of their own as they performed at halftime, then witnessed a dynamic Uni versity of Missouri women's bas ketball come-from-behind victo ry over the University of Colo rado.

Open Fo r jm Americai society needs change Editor, Ledger I am a cadet from Leon Guanajuato, Mexico, and 1 have been here in Mexico, Mo., since September. I am re ally surprised and concerned about two things that the American society is dealing with. My first point is to con gratulate the efforts that everyone of you is doing to keep your environment here in excellent condition. You are creating more green areas, and a good system of containers for the trash. That really sur prises me because in mv coun-
try containers for trash really do not exist. Also in my coun try, there are a few cities like Mexico City that have some of the highest levels.of pollution in the world. So many people are having breath problems and other kinds of sicknesses.
The point that really con cerns me is, if we arc talking about keeping something clean, we also need to think to keep our minds and our souls clean. There exist a lot of problems about drugs, sex, and alcohol that affect cvcry-

one directly or indirectly in a society where each one deals with everyone else. The American society needs a change to keep growing as a country because the education and the thoughts of the youth are turning to the wrong ways. In my country those prob lems exist, but in lower dimen sions. I think that the people try to find the solution by easy ways, they do not want to make any effort In my coun try one of the main factors that helps to control those prob lems is the morality of its peo ple. Most of the parents trans mit healthy ideas and act with a good example for their child ren. This really could help any society to keep growing tow ard its goals. Let’s go ahead and encour age young people of the U.S. and Mexico to become lead ers, healthy people who can help in the near future their country because those people will be the workers, the scien tists, and the doctors in the next century. We want young people to feel proud of their society, their neighborhoods, and especially their country. ELISEO MARTINEZ Leon, Mexico
To The Searcher of Men's Hearts Divine Counselor and Merciful Father, we have made mistakes in our daily lives; we have satisfied too much our own personal and selfish desires. We have left undone those things we ought to have done and we have done those things we ought not to have done. Have mercy upon us offenders, and forgive us who sincerely confess our faults to Thee. Give us courage to be strong in the face of temptation; give us strength to be of service in spite of selfish desires; give us the will to do what we know is right, for the glory of Thy Holy Name. Amen -from the "Missouri Military Academy Cadet Handbook 1990-91, p. 4 "Who can discern his errors? Forgive me my hidden faults. Keep your servant also from willful sins; may they not rule over me. Then will 1 be blameless, innocent of great transgression. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer." Psalm 19:12-14
"There is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. What I tell you in the dark, speak in the daylight; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the housetops." - Jesus Christ - Matthew 10:26b-27 "For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account." Hebrews 4:12-13
