I'd like to thank all my teachers over the past year and one-half. You kept me in line and made sure that I handed in my work and didn’t fall behind. I could go into detail about each teacher, but I don't have the room for all that. You know who you are, and for your help I’m very thankful. All the teachers kept me in line on the academic side of things, but on the cadet side we had the mentors. Whether it was when I was a squad member, platoon leader or eventually company commander, they were always there to keep me from no good. LTC Seibert, God only knows what you were thinking putting me in charge of the entire Middle School. I’ll never forget the first thing you said to me when I moved in: “You can’t go ‘down under’ on them.” That always made me laugh. To all the mates I’ve made during my time here. I'll never forget you. Oh, and Williams T.. just for you buddy: “Veni, vidi, vici.”

1st Platoon £eader Wow. where do I start? It has been a long two years, but I know I would not have made it without last year's seniors: Dani, Flynn, Dylan. Clubb, Bobby. Mitchell. After spending six months in Bravo, 1 doubt I will ever have trouble with anger management again. For all the seniors who managed to pull their heads out. I’m going to miss you guys: Jimmy. Sean, Williams, Yeakel. Goshom, DeEsesarte, Ramos XO, Gonzo and Sung Chan. Go on to have a good life, and remember the things you learned at this school that you will actually use in real life. This is it! After four years, the most difficult thing to do is tosh down and think about your senior quote. Just silting here now. I realized that I am about to finish something that 1 started four years ago, that it has been my whole world. But I also have a feeling of excitement when 1 think about my next step, which is college. I also know that I can go out with confidence that I will succeed, because of what I learned at MMA, which has prepared me for what is about to come. These years at MMA have not been easy. They have been full of stress, problems, emotions I never felt before, and probably the one that hit us all, the absence of our parents. Mom, you do not know how much you helped me. If it was not for your encouragement, and your constant reminders not to give up and to try harder every time, 1 do not know what would 1 have done Dad. you were always there for me. giving me your knowledge and always guiding me back to the right path. All the wisdom that you always imparted helped me to be the man that 1 am and that I will be. I just want to show my appreciation to the faculty members who were always there to help me and never let me slack off, especially LTC Medley, MAJ Treadway. MAJ Galarza and the Delta Company mentors Thanks for everything. Ernesto. I know you are going to have a great year. Don’t worn you will be fine Just don’t quit.

For three years 1 attended a school that completely changed my view of life. Everybody will walk away from MMA with a different product in their hands, which is the consequence of the attitude they had throughout the years. Probably what 1 appreciate the most of the MMA experience is the different situations I lived through, because every single one showed me a new, different sid« of myself. Of course, there wouldn’t be anything worth appreciating if 1 did not have the uncommon support my parents gave me. Everything they taught me over the years made me the person I am today I would not have been able to, in any way. make it through without the wisdom and guidance my mother and father gave me. This institution made me realize the true importance of family support, and how much it factors into the amount of effort that goes into the activities I carried out in their absence. 1 would also like to thank the MMA faculty for putting in so mans extra hours and weekends of their lime. The unnecessary, yet crucial, sacrifices they make for the Corps are essential to the MMA experience. I will never forget the support they showed me Finally, the thing I will miss the most about here is my friends — especially DeEscsarte. Lopez and Kuri. The majority of our time in MMA goes into extolling its defects. Although it does have many. I believe we miss the point of what we do here. This school’s effort is to present a microcosm of life. In a very exclusive, distinct and personal way. it taught me ■hinSs that II mark inc for life positively. For that, I am extremely grateful to Missouri Military Academy.

Senior Chronicle Cadet Ty Armer details the Class of2010's construction Initially, I remember entering the Academy not knowing what to expect. Military school had always been the ultimate threat growing up, and upon hearing that I was to attend one and it not be as a punishment, I had mixed feelings. As a 13-year-old, living on my own ended up being an entirely different experience than I thought it would be. Many enter the Academy thinking their freedoms will become non-existent, but in reality it wasn’t as bad as I had heard military schools made out to be, and in fact, I soon discovered there were other privileges to not having parents around all the time. Anyway, in 2005-2006 I began my life as a cadet, and was soon joined by Luis Marcano and Sea Jun Kang. As is typical with boys our age, there were occasional fights, but for the most part we banded together in order to get away with all the trouble we could. Although not initially the best of friends, time brought us together and made closer friends as we worked together to make it through life in the Middle School. We were instructed from day one on the drills and other actions that would soon become daily events for us ... including that first wonder-filled trip to Walmart. 2006- 2007 was an experience all its own. With the new addition of Roman Cepeda, Juan Pablo De Esesarte and Si Chan Law, our class slowly grew in numbers, and we learned fast what it was to be a freshman in high school. Fortunately, our reputation in the Middle School preceded us, and the High School cadet leaders accepted us as old boys. Given a second chance at starting over, many of us Middle School grads began carving a new path for ourselves. Others, like “winter in my glove,” struggled to adapt to life as a cadet. All in all, high school life was a very new experience for some of us, and took a lot of “getting used to.” 2007- 2008 brought on a new era in many members of this senior class’s life. Many of us received leadership roles we never thought ourselves capable of, and others were working hard to fight the system as yet again new members of our class faced the challenge of life in an all-boys military school. With more than 15 new members to the class of 2010, our motley group began to actually resemble a “class.” Joining us were Tarik Aguilera, Eduardo Benites, Josh Beyer, Andres Camino, Robert Carrillo, Luis Gonzalez, Hector Herrera, Sean Hurst, Sung Chan “Daniel” Lee, Ji Hyeong Lee, Zhe “Jeremy” Li, Joseph Lowery, Felix Navarette, Eduardo Torres, David Williams and Alex Yeakel. Oh, and Todd Minnett, who liked us so much he joined the class twice! That was a year of competition as everyone began jostling for position as a junior platoon sergeant. 2008-2009 was our second-largest addition, and by far the most “class-spirited.” With the additions of Joshua Armstrong, A.J. Boren, Evan Buford, Alejandro Cepeda, Jimmy Irwin, Joo Eun Kim, Julian Montgomery, Orlando Ramos, James Schwank, Eric Soto, Gabriel Villasenor, Thomas Williams, Huan Zhao, Xin Rui Zhao and Ye-Jun Zou, our class swelled and competition yet again became eminent as we all fought for positions to lead the senior class. Finally, 2009-2010. This has been a year for the record books. As a class, we earned an unprecedented $3,129,128 in scholarship money — all of which could never have been accomplished without the help of final additions Juan Pablo Aguilera, Antonio Aguirre, Julio Cesar Avendano, Zach Brandt, Jordan Goshorn, Matt Hoyer, Ernesto Kuri, Jorge Lopez, Andres Manzano, Jose Robles, Vonniah Rogers and Andrew Shreffler. Through good times and tough times, growing pains and just dealing with life in a military boarding school, all of us have become a brotherhood of seniors ... the Class of 2010. Wherever we go and whatever we do, that is ours to keep. As we go forward, fellow seniors, let’s remember the good times and lessons, and always stay in touch. 164

’Chairs for Chair-ity’ Cadets shine at first-time localfiund-raiser event

Dream Factory of Audrain County contacted Missouri Military Academy art instructor CPT Marijo Lagemann to paint chairs to be auctioned off as a moneymaking project for the “Chairs 4 Chair-ity Auction” in Mexico, Mo. All proceeds the group received went to its mission to grant dreams to chronically and critically ill children in Northeast Missouri. The Dream Factory provided the chairs, tables and stepstools to area artists, then collected the painted and decorated pieces to auction off after their annual spaghetti dinner Saturday, April 10. Members of MMA ’s 3-D Design class painted two chairs. Class members are senior Josh Beyer of Waukee, Iowa, sophomore Alex Belton and senior Todd Minnett. Beyer designed and painted a chair called “Starry Night Dream,” based on a Vincent Van Gogh painting. Belton designed, and he and Minnett painted the other chair, a red-white-and-blue design called “Stars and Stripes Forever. ” Beyer and CPT Lagemann attended the dinner and auction, where Beyer’s chair brought $130, and the Belton-Minnett chair sold for $125. Both were in the top five fund-raisers. “I hope to make this an annual project for the 3-D Design class,” said CPT Lagemann, “The boys will receive community service hours for their involvement and hard work in this community project." 174

Parents Committee Group provides support, fun through materials, events

The MMA Parents Committee worked to make cadets feel more at home with activities and "surprises” throughout the year. Projects included Christmas decorations and stuffed stockings, a Halloween party and costume contest, Chinese New Year decorations and more. The group hosted a Mother's Tea during Spring Family Weekend. This was the first year for a very active Parents Committee. Parents supported ACT test-takers and the Railsplitters by providing snack bags, stocked the teachers' and staff lounges with snacks and were integral to the success of the Maroon and Gold event, at which event Paul Petit, '82, participates in the Silent Auction, above.

MAJ Mansfield remembered Cadets, co-workers eulogize former MMA teacher “A teacher affects eternity; hejshe] can never tell where his[her] influence stops.” (Henry B. Adams)

Syl Mansfield’s influence will never stop. Il stretches across states, countries, oceans, and continents; across years, decades, and generalions. Her influence is a living entily, an anomaly existing on a plane beyond the usual and the routine. The flame of her influence burns brightly inside of the hundreds of cadets she taught with passion, grace, and an unquestionable, undeniable knowledge and conviction. Il conflagrates inside her colleagues, whom she pushed to better themselves, but whom she also gathered in the warmth of her embrace. As a teacher, she was one who never left a stone unturned. AP Study Sessions were her creation. Syl always gave her students extra time and attention, especially during and before major projects and final exams. No matter how much extra reading and grading she had to do, every single cadet was afforded the chance to revise major projects for an improved grade. Research was one of her many areas of specially. Her students researched and wrote successful, properly formatted research papers, which is a skill that will serve them well in college and beyond Her yearly trips to Hannibal and Mizzou were events to which the boys looked forward. Day after day, over the course of several years. Syl suffered through painful, invasive chemotherapy. She often came to school pale, nauseous and exhausted. But, by God, she made it. Her boys needed her. That was all there was to it. Even in her final days, was she concerned with the short time she had left? No. Did she sink into despair, as most would when very near the end? No. She died as she lived, putting her students ahead of herself, setting their needs above her own, yearning to be where she belonged ... in her classroom with her students. Syl Mansfield defined and redefined teaching at MMA. One could consider her to be a study in the brilliance of contrasts and balance ... stern, yet flexible; honest, yet kind: organized, yet open-minded; meticulous, yet understanding. What truly set her apart? What made her a master teacher? Simple, she believed. She believed in every student, lesson, objective, and project. She believed in her ability and the abilities of those around her... a belief driven by love and honor, established through long hours and hard work. (— By CPT John Schell)

Don't take my word lor it. Take theirs: “She always was thinking of her students. When she found out that her cancer had returned, she held me after class and broke the news to me so that it wouldn't be a shock to me. She knew that my mother died of breast cancer when I was in seventh grade and look that into consideration. She was always putting her students before herself." (Nathan Kaag, 'll) “I couldn’t write at all before I took her class.” (Aaron Boren. 10)

“She is the reason I am going to college. I was terrible at English before her class, but she made a change in me. I not only improved in her class, but all of them. She was one of the smartest and nicest ladies I have ever met. I truly will miss her." (Joey Lowery, '10) "She was one of the most influential and important teachers that I had while I was al MMA. She helped us be our best. We knew she cared about us." (Chris Marcione. ’06) “Syl and I were the only ones left at 6 a.m. when the Relay (for Life) ended and they announced that MMA had earned Bronze level participation for our first year as a team. Syl was one of the many who walked the track as ’Survivors’ to open the relay events the night before." (CPT Marijo Lageman)

“I fought with her on a lot of things. 1 should have worked harder, but I know she helped me with my writing. She was always there when I asked, and she always stayed after school to help me. I’m just here to say she helped me and she will be missed and that I wish she could have been here to help other cadets for more generations at MMA. God bless you. Mrs. Mansfield.” (Zach Barton, 'll) “I know she knew better than me and always put up with my stupid jokes and questions. She helped me understand the English language and helped me see the world around me in a different light. She opened up new avenues of thinking. Her influence will remain with me forever; and not just me, but all of us. We will truly miss her." (Martin Michael, 'll) "She was a great teacher to me. She never gave up on me even when I gave up on myself. She stayed by what she said at the 207 beginning of the year ... that she gave us the tools to help us succeed, and she was that tool for us." (Matthew EerNisse. ’ll)
