I wo Jima survivor speaks CPL Champagne participates in Homecoming

Battalion Commander Kyle Perkinson shows appreciation to CPL Leo Champagne.

Speaker sets the record straight on Iwo Jima The last survivor of the famous Mt. Suribachi flag-raising on Iwo Jima during World War II was the guest speaker during Missouri Military Academy Homecoming 2010 activities Sept. 24 in Centennial Gymtorium. A large crowd of parents and area residents joined the Corps of Cadets. U.S. Marine CPL Leo Champagne (retired) of Ocala. Fla., addressed the 122nd MMA Corps of Cadets, “setting the record straight” on the events of that momentous battle. CPL Champagne was born and raised in Maine. In June 1943. at age 17. he graduated from high school. Two weeks later he enlisted in the Marine Corps. In the early 1940s that was not unusual. “It was a very patriotic time,” he said. After completing basic training, he was assigned to the 5th Marine Division, just as it was forming at Camp Pendleton. Oceanside, Calif. After very intensive training, he was part of the invasion force that landed on Iwo Jima on Feb. 19. 1945. On Feb. 23, he was in the platoon chosen to be the first unit to attempt the climb of Mt. Suribachi. and if successful, to raise the American flag. He was one of the four men who raised the first flag. CPL Champagne gave an approximately 45-minute talk on what actually took place on top of Mt. Suribachi that day. Of the 42 men who first climbed Suribachi, 11 walked off the island. He is now the last living survivor of that group. CPL Champagne also participated in ceremonies surrounding the dedication of MMA's Wall of Honor for alumni veterans during Homecoming activities.

Top photo, CPL Leo Champagne is greeted by Dean of Academics LTC Frank Giuseffi. Above, Colin Stavinoha and Ethan Rachell hold the Japanese flag saved from the island as Derek Kantorski and Clayton Workman pose for a photo. Below, Academy President MajGen Robert M. Flanagan listens to the presentation.

When I was a freshman I never thought it would be from a military school. I must say I am glad 1 came here. The friends (more like family) I have gained here are amazing. Over the last three years, it is strange that I had to come to think of this place as more of a home than California, where I am originally from. I have to mention my family, who paidfor the school and who were usually there when 1 needed them. My mother, especially, who came for every single weekend I could imagine. Although I doubt he will readily admit it. I think if was hardest on Dad when I left. My sister I missed the most. We had our differences, but ire always hadfun when we were around each other. My grandparents played an essential role in making sure I stayed here, ifyou get my meaning. My friends are my new family. There was myfirst best friend Sean "Momo " Maurice. He was the one I had the most fun with over the years, and I can honestly say he is truly my brother. Kyle Perkinson was part of a group called the Breakfast Club with Momo and me. There were a lot of crazy adventures and great times. Ives, Workman. Winter. Helverson, Gutierrez. Ramos, Reindel, Han P. and too many any other to name. All are my brothers. We had many rough patches and great times. Although not all in the same group or at the same time. The teachers put us through school to get us ready to for "the real world. " CPT Griffin had a huge impact on my time here. I was an actor, and am going to miss being on the stage. CPT Schell's creative writing class was a lot offun and introduced to me a hobby I never had. CPT Syed, my wrestling coach, which is the hardest and mostfun sport I ever had. All of us pulled through and are betterfor it. We have grown up and we are men. I am Moose. I am a cadet officer at Missouri Military Academy. Remember, guys: We were all young and cadets once. Goodbye, and good luck.

Senior Chronicle Class of 2011 grew to become the best! By Nick Helverson Five long years ago, on September first, 2006, I came to MMA with deep regret for my parents and what they had done for me. I was 13 at the time, and when I first stepped onto campus, I knew that I was in for a rough nine months. Many other young kids were looking around with the same scared expressions, not knowing what to do once their parents left. So, what did we do? We all worked together and got past our initial integration into the school... and soon we realized that it was not just all hard work, but that there were some pretty fun times ahead, without our parents being around. Initially, in 2006, I was introduced to many of the other students who would form the Class of 2011. Along with all the others I saw in the rooms, I met Zach Barton, Hunter Dock, Kevin Choi, Jun Hyeok Lee and Juan Garza. They also came in looking like deer in the headlights. I am sure I speak for all of us when I say that that year was one the best of our lives. I’m sure we all remember the first snow day that the school had ever had. And how about those long, adventurous trips to MisMilAca, the cabin out in back campus. Although we didn’t always talk to each other, or were the best of friends, our brotherhood as the only middle-schoolers to get through the school the whole way kept us strong. In 2007, our freshman year, the six of us were introduced to more of our brothers. That year we added Jose Allard, Jimmy Chang, Henry Lei, Kyle Perkinson, Alan Ramos, Andrew Smith, Cameron Stock and James Sun. During that year, Juan Garza left and went back to Mexico to go to school there. That year was the year that Colonel Kelly retired as president of the academy and Major General Flanagan stepped in to fill the role. Many of us were confused when it came to our freshmen year, and the ones that had been here the year before in middle school had no idea that it’s not quite like the middle school. Our freshman year is what can be called our year of change. We adapted to the change well, showing that we had the ability to do great things in a rough situation. Since the freshman year of high school is rough on a student anywhere, imagine us, 14- and 15-year-olds, going through a military school as a freshman, all while the school itself was changing. It was tough, but I am sure we all enjoyed our experiences. In 2008 we gained the bulk of our class. We brought Omar Aleman, Xiao Chang, Jose Gutierrez, Antonio Haghenbeck, Aaron Hohlbein, Jae Hyung Jung, Jiu Huan Liu, Ryan Ma, Sean Maurice, Martin Michael, Steve Ortega, Matthew Riendel and Edgar Rodriguez into our brotherhood that year. Now, for all of you that were here then, how many of you can remember having to go from class to class through three different buildings? Also, do you remember when we were able to go back to our rooms after lunch for a good 30 to 40 minutes? Those were the times! Throughout the year, we worked hard at trying to make names for ourselves so we would have that rare platoon sergeant position the next year. That year was the year that Alpha Barracks was being torn down, in order to make room for the new academic building. It was showing that the school was continually changing around us. In 2009, our brotherhood began to grow even more. It was our junior year, and we felt like we were at the top, even though we still had a year to go. We met Derek Chatman, George Hunter, Ian Ives, James Jacuzzi, Nathan Kaag, Austin Kohl, Wen Hong Lin, Ge Ma, Julian Rosado, Yeshukei Zana and that dynamic duo, Joshua Ryan and Joey Winter. That year Omar Aleman left us to go and study in Mexico as well. The new academic complex, Barnard Hall, was up and running ... BUT that same year, the Alamo, where the gravel parking lot is now, caught on fire. Later in the year, it was torn down to make more room for parking. We thought Barnard Hall was a pretty cool building, and very different from anything we had on campus before. Our junior year consisted of us enjoying our year and meeting new friends. The group that came in that year was definitely our most enthusiastic addition to the class. When we came into this 2010-2011 year, our class was pretty much complete, but to top it off, we added Jose De Esesarte, Wing Yang Chia and our only post-grad, Jorge Guerrero. Do you remember I mentioned that Juan Garza and Omar Aleman left us? Well, this year, they decided to rejoin us for their senior year here at MMA. This year, 111-year-old Stribling Hall was torn down. On the bright side, they are apparently going to put a gold dome on the new Stribling Hall due to be completed in May 2012. We will see ... That will be nice to look at when we come back as alumni down the road. Classmates, we have grown together, and shown everyone that we are ideal leaders for the future. Our brotherhood is stronger than that of any other classes. We are products of our own efforts. We have gone down the road of perfection, and on it we found excellence. Remember to always keep your head held high, because when you do, you will be better than the next person who comes along. And, always remember that no matter what you do in life, you will have a brotherhood behind you, always willing to help you out. Be proud of yourself and your class ... because for all we know, we are the best class that has come through here. Thank you.

Stribling Hall comes down Makes way for new facility with similar appearance

iL wi

Demolition of 111-year-old Stribling Hall began on Mar h 12 and was completed early l ic next week. It is scheduled to be rebuilt and operational by May 2012.

Plans call for May 2012 opening At left is an architect's rendering of what the new Stribling Hall, to be completed in May 2012, will look like.

Stribling Hall, which had stood as the centerpiece of the Missouri Military Academy campus since 1900, came tumbling down on Saturday, March 12. The structure is scheduled to be rebuilt with an identical front face, and due to be completed in May 2012. Missouri Military Academy’s signature domed building, which served as an administration building, barracks, student center and classrooms over the years, will be brought back, new and improved, according to Academy President MajGen Robert M. Flanagan. “Stribling Hall has been the focal point of our campus since 1900. It truly represents the Academy and the traditions that have been in place for more than a hundred years,” said MajGen Flanagan. “By rebuilding Stribling Hall, we are making another long-term commitment to excellence and the future of Missouri Military Academy.” Age and condition of the building were primary factors in the decision to lake the building down and replace it. The location and appearance of the new administration building at the Academy’s heart will remain the same. A crowd of faculty, staff, local residents, former cadets and teachers gathered behind Bravo Barracks to watch Schneider Construction of Columbia, Mo., begin the work on Saturday morning. The team completed demolition and the majority of cleanup during the cadet spring furlough. Cadets returned to campus on Sunday, March 20. MMA Director of Grounds and Maintenance Greg Morton and his staff coordinated shutdown and relocation of water, cable, electric and gas lines with local service companies prior to the demolition of the 110-year-old building. “Because Stribling Hall is so important to the campus, we initially looked at refurbishing the original building.” said MajGen Flanagan. “At the conclusion of the engineering study, it was clear we would have to rebuild the building from the ground up. “A new building, modeled after the original administrative building, was the only practical solution.” Stribling Hall opened in September 1900, and has been an important landmark in the community and hub of Academy activity since that time. It becomes the third building on campus to be removed in the last three years, joining Alpha Barracks and The Alamo (also known as Old Delta Barracks). The opening of the 43.350-square-foot Barnard Hall academic complex in August 2009. replacement of the running track, new tennis courts, parking lot lighting and air-conditioning inside Centennial Gymtorium, painting and resurfacing of the pool, and a new roof and interior upgrades to the MMA Fieldhouse are other recent major improvements at the Academy. Those formerly working in Stribling Hall have been moved to the former Middle School building and Bravo Barracks. Tentative completion date for the New Stribling Hall is May 2012. according to Mr. Monon. Engineer and architect for the project is Mitchell-Hugheback of St. Louis. Contractors will be Reinhardt Construction of Centralia and S.M. Wilson Co. of St. Louis.

He also related his high school life as a student in a Nigerian military school, and his eagerness to visit Missouri Military Academy to compare his educational experiences with a military school cadet's in this country. “Mister Alao presented many of his colorful paintings and discussed the symbolism within them, which was a great benefit to the students because it helped them to visualize art in a more thoughtful and philosophical way,” said LTC Giuseffi. Alao encouraged the students to study hard for all subjects in school, even those they could see no need for right now. He said that with his current experiences, he uses the English, math, and geography that his "teachers made him learn.”

MMA cadets splash in and out of the frigid February waters for a worthy cause. 178

Four Missouri Military Academy cadets participated in the Pol Bear Plunge to raise funds for the Missouri Special Olympics c 1 Feb. 19 at Kiwanis Lake in Mexico’s Plunkett Park. The MMA Smurfs, so named because of their blue garrison uniforms by local Mexico residents, consisted of seniors Sean Maurice, Andrew Smith, Ian Ives and George Hunter. CPT Mar-'O Lagemann was faculty sponsor. The cadets solicited contributions of $400 in four days, with parent Bonnie Smith spearheading that effort. The participants received Polar Bear Plunge sweatshirts, which they immediately donned over the winter athletics uniform they were wearing over their costumes, whihch consisted of Smurf shorts and T-shirst. It was close to 70 degrees Fahrenheit, but officials said it felt like 40 with a brisk breeze. There was ice over parts of the lake. Mexico Parks and Recreation employees put sand out on the ice Wednesday in the Plunge area to help melt it. The "Smurf Cadets" were entered into the second heat of the day. along with two "Biker Chicks" from Poppa' Wheelies Bar and Grill. "Moses," and another individual entry. The boys led the way into the lake, intending to swim out to the boat and back. However, “Just like a flock of geese, they hit the water, submerged, and turned back to shore!” said CPT Lagemann. Afterward, photos of the wet cadets were taken in front of the National Guard pick-up and the cadets changed into dry clothes at the Jaycees tent. MMA Director of Communications Andy Craig and Darin Knipp. husband of high school registrar Melissa Knipp, were others with MMA connections participating.

Right, LT John Noel and MAJ Richards Boyce supervise cadets Walter Pate and Federico Del Real in packing items of aid for delivery to needy area children. ri Military Academy and the Mid-Missouri Food Bank cn’*”“ring to produce Buddy Packs for children in 2010-11. Buddy Packs are sacks of food handed out to needy children on ” 'J *v’y will have something to eat on the weekends. Participating children are those who qualify for free or reduced price school meals, based on family income. Middle School Principal Richards Boyce and Food Bank officials hammered out a procedure over several weeks of discussion. A major hurdle to making the arrangement work was finding a storage area for materials on campus, but Senior Army Instructor Sgt. Maj. Henry Suddarth and the Military Department cleared a place in the MMA Fieldhouse. “I am excited about this project because it will benefit hundreds of children in this community every week!" said Maj. Boyce. “It will also be an on-going project that should continue for years to come. Buddy packs are only provided during the school year, so it will fit right into our usual calendar. Mt will require a few hours of labor each week from 12 to 15 cadets. Food is delivered to MMA monthly by the Food Bank. Cadets fill the food sacks weekly, and the Mexico School District will pick up the completed sacks every Tuesday." The Academy wil] begin the work the first week of January f or a Jan. 4 delivery. Academy advisory groups will take turns on the project as part of their community service requirement. ’‘The Food Bank has said we will need to prepare over three hundred packs each week (Mexico's allotment)," said Maj. Boyce, ghey envision this number growing. A> a point of reference, when they started two years ago they hoped to do 3.000 a month (fortheir whole service area). Thex are now doing nearly 7.000. and they think that number will reach lO.OQOsomeume next year!
