The 123rd Corps of Cadets It all starts here, where we enter as boys and eventually become men who shape the future for not just ourselves, but for all of those behind us. Here, at Missouri Military Academy, our home and the home of the Colonels, we begin our journey.

TAPS 2011 -2012 At some point in our lives, the decision has been made to bring us to a place that would help us grow into the fine young gentlemen we are becoming. MMA, our academy, brings forth order, achievement, and satisfaction. We arrive as boys, we leave as men; the leaders, community servants, college students, and architects of our own future.
With that goal in mind, on August 22nd, 2011, we began to fall in for the new school year.

All alumni serve as role models for who we should aspire to become. Homecoming is a celebration of all the people who make up a school. MMA's success until its cadets is proven by its alumni. These men deserve respect for everything they have done for us, whether these contributions are evident or not. Every year's Homecoming is a celebration showing that respect. We shall honor this tradition, showing our appreciation for the MMA Alumni and all they have acheived, wholeheartedly and forevermore.

Commmi The Middle and High School cadets perform community service every' year with the goal of leaching them the satisfaction of helping others and supporting their school and home communities. High School cadets earn a minimum of twenty hours of senice and Middle School cadets at least ten hours per school year in a variety of ways throughout that time period. In addition to individual opportunities the High School schedules two full days of community senice, one in the fall and one in the spring. For the first Community Senice Day, many advisory groups took advantage of this year's beautiful fall weather and performed services in the Mexico community by cleaning parks, clearing brush and weeds, doing yard work, and assisting Habitat for Humanity, as well as visiting with residents of local homes and hospitals. Teaching and learning take place every moment of every day, no matter which classroom we are in, no matter if we are in , a classroom or not. But our formal education takes place in "school," in classes with one or more teachers on hand to guide us along the way. These are academics; the formal, structured learning experiences of our lives.

English The main goals of the English Department are to create effective communicators of written and spoken English; to prepare students for higher education; and to follow the curriculum set down by MMX. English classes include Shakespearean plays, British and American literature, multicultural novels, research papers, the Wallace-Fry Speech Contest, and various non-fiction and fiction writing assignments. Areas of study in English include: English-IV (with Honors for sophomores and freshmen), AP English IV, Dual Credit English. Drama, Creative Writing, and Speech. The English Department Chair is CPT Jonathan Griffin, who teaches English III and English IV. Dual Credit English, and Drama. The other English teachers are, in order of years worked at MMA: CPT John Schell (English II, Creative Writing), CPT Craig Flynn (Middle School English and Literature), LT Annette Meinheit (English I, ESL), LT Mary Maupin (Middle School Literature, Speech, and Drama), and LT Joseph Shafer (English III. /Ml high schools recognize the importance of foreign languages, but as a military7 boarding school with a large number of international students MMA knows the need of a strong foreign language program. This year that commitment was demonstrated by the addition of Chinese to the foreign language curriculum. Ms. Jackie Li came on board to teach five classes of high school and middle school students how to speak, read, and write Chinese. CPT Santina Ippolito continued to teach MMA cadets Spanish, and Ms. Sally Stuart conducted post-seventh period French classes for students who had been participating in on-fine courses earlier in the year.

ESL English as a Second Language is a curriculum especially critical to students in a school such as MMA. As a large number of our cadets are international students who speak another language as their primary language, being able to understand class content presented in English and to proficiently express themselves in and out of class in English are necessary skills. In some cases, English is their third or even fourth language, and learning to use English as their primary means of communication is a main goal of the English as a Second Language program. Advanced art students also designed and painted a total of 24 candle stands, each with a unique design, to be sold or auctioned for the benefit of MMA at the 2012 Maroon and Gold Banquet and auction in St. Louis on March 31st.

Visual Arts The basic goal of the visual arts program at MMA is to mold lifelong producers of creative art and savvy art consumers. By introducing the basic design principles and artistic skills to cadets and urging them to practice, practice, practice those skills, art students become less intimidated by art and more comfortable with their abilities to creatively express themselves in a variety of media. Core to the prognun is to also make the cadet more aware of the interplay of the fine arts, and particularly the visual arts, in even aspect of their lives. Through exposure to the work of famous artists as well as that of their own peers, students can begin to make more critical evaluations of the arts around them and to make more informed decisions in creating and purchasing a better quality of product, both aesthetic and practical, throughout their lives.

The Parents Committee takes very seriously their chosen task of making MMA life a little more ho. their cadets. From decorating the Barnard Hall atrium for Mexican Independence Day. Christmas, and du.\ > New Year to sponsoring holiday parties, their efforts really make boarding school life a little more comfortable And they don't stop with the cadets: they do everything within their power to make the MMA staff and faculty feel appreciated, from stocking the teacher workrooms with instant oatmeal and hot chocolate mix to sending birthday cards. A primary focus of the group, though, is to reach out to every parent and family member of all MMA cadets and help them acclimate to having a young man attending the Academy. Trimester Three
Just as Fall Family Weekend is a celebration of our cadets' fathers and grandfathers, the Corps takes a weekend in the spring to honor mothers and grandmothers. The weekend festivies always include the popular flower-pinning ceremony, as well as the recognition of the Superior Cadet award winners at the Spring Family Weekend review. The Festival of the Arts is also a big event for the weekend. Cadets showcase their talents in art. music, drama, and writing. The most outstading works are recognized through awards at a ceremony Saturday evening.

Battalion Staff
It has already been four years since Yuscanne Campos, the Battalion Commander of Class of 2008, instilled in me an ambitious dream of commanding the Corps of Cadets. z\ftcr years of tenure, I now stand before the battalion, ready to hand over the grave responsibility of a Battalion Commander. As I reserve my utmost excitement about my upcoming voyage to college and, ultimately, this global society, I speak of a few words for the vital constituents of this academy.Battalion Staff and Company Commanders. 1 highly appreciate all your industrious effort throughout this year. I was a lucky man who had a chance to cope with a group of fine leaders like you all, and 1 am certain that such experience will be of help in my future. Seniors, 1 wish the best of luck to each and every one of you all. Jared, it has been an honor to have you as one of my closest friends, and 1 look forward to both of us shining in our own Helds in the future. 1 sincerely wish you and Lindon the best in the Air Force Academy. Dillon, my successor, the school and the cadets have faith in you. 1 cannot emphasize enough of the grave responsibility of a Battalion Commander, but you arc fully capable of exceeding your own limit. /\s I mentioned before, 1 want to see who you are, not through yourself, but through your battalion. Look up, and face the upcoming challenges. Soon enough, you will get to enjoy them. Gonzalez and Morales, it seems like yesterday that we marched together as a part of Bravo Second Platoon. The tw o of you are truly distinctive and admirable, and I cannot wail to hear about the fierce competition between you two. Cadets, especially those in sophomore year and below, I strongly suggest that you conceive of a dream, a goal, or set a role model for which you are willing to strive. 1 was fortunate to sene a Battalion Commander against whom I virtually competed throughout my life in this institution, and 1 am certain that the leaders you witness will also instill a sense of ambition and aspiration in you Aim high. Challenge them. Overachieve yourself. /\s 1 mentioned early this year, life is too short to waste. Ask yourself through the mirror whether you are living as passionately as you can today as if there is no tomorrow, and each time you get a “no”, you need a change.

And yet, they do. Just the good-byes remain, anticipated but saddening as well. ...Fall Out

Volume 57, School Year 2011-2012 The Yearbook Staff and advisers Marijo Lagemann and John Schell would like to thank everyone for their input and help in the completion of this edition of Taps. In no way can we thank everyone for their contributions, but we would like to individually thank those who pulled us out of a lot of jams and helped us meet a lot of deadlines throughout the year. -To the staff of The Eagle and their advisor Justin Rottger for their coverage of the events and day to day activities of MMA life, and in providing photographs and copy for use in the yearbook, particularly Ivan Avendano and Alan Avila. -To the cadets of CPT Schell's English classes who provided copy for the various MMA groups, and to the faculty who generously provided us with copy regarding their departments and the groups that they sponsored, as well as photos. -To the cadets who provided us with photographs of class trips, ed tours, games, etc., and to their parents as well who made photos available to us, most particularly Larry and Chu Woolery and Ed Workman and to 1SGT Alan Hakes. -To the official school photographers Steve Biggers and Coetta Brashear of Biggers Studio, and to Justin Rottger, Willis Kleinsorge, Christine Smith, Peggy Reynard, and other MMA staff who supplemented those photo files with their own. -And most especially to the 123rd Corps of Cadets for providing MMA with another great year of classes, events, activities, competitions, and fun, worthy of recording in an annual such as Taps. Thank you alL
