To the Class of 2019: To every end we have a new start; But sadly now we must depart. What we will accomplish, the future knows; But remember what you learned, wherever you go. The friendships we made will last forever; Through hard and good times, It will endeavor. Although we did not come from the same mother; For the rest of my life, you all are my brothers. — 2019 Battalion Commander Richard Choy

Duke of York’s Royal Military School Through the Duke of York Fellowship exchange program, Cadets Colton Lucas and Chia-Wei Hsu attended the Duke of Yorks Royal Military School in Dover, England during Fall Semester 2018. “The Duke of Yorks Royal Military School was an experience of a lifetime. The education was unlike any other I have ever witnessed and took weeks to comprehend but after some practice, I consistently grasped new concepts and eventually mastered A level studies in all fields such as physics, philosophy, and original English literature. My favorite read was that of Beowulf, particularly the abhorrent Grendel. The parades every Friday were extravagant and inspiring with their harmonious band and advanced under officers. Quality of food was superb and the variety was quite nice. British food has its luxuries, and I miss it to this day, especially hunters chicken and beer battered fish. Its military program CCF taught me awesome leadership techniques and training that tested my capabilities, improving my character immensely.” — Cadet Colton Lucas ’19

Celebrating Black History Month This year Missouri Military Academy celebrated Black History Month by hosting a cadet-led vespers service on February 24, 2019. Dr. Ayanna Shivers, director of the college and career counseling department, spearheaded this event. About 20 cadets of African and African American descent participated in the sendee. Cadet Erickson Kagame’s opening sentences came from the third stanza of the Black National Anthem, ’Lift Ev’iy Voice and Sing. The participants marched in singing a traditional gospel song sung in Black churches, ’We’ve Come This Far By Faith.” Cadet Darion Heavens read the opening prayer, Langston Hughes’ “I Dream A World.” The service closed in the traditional MMA fashion. However, for the cadets and over 20 visitors from the community that attended, it was an evening that would go down in history as the first Vespers for Black History Month at MMA

Shooting for the Gold Star “Tills year’s JPA (JROTC Program of Accreditation), or as many know it by FI (Formal Inspection), determined our eligibility of earning the title Honor Unit with Distinction. In order to achieve the gold star, we as a corps needed to pass this military inspection with 95% or above. The inspection consisted of many parts: a view of the barracks, an in-ranks inspection with rifles, a demonstration of our honor platoon’s drill, a graded performance of the MMA Color Guard, and presentations of the Continuous Improvement Project and the Sendee Learning Project. Tills event was crucial in maintaining our military school standard. We planned for this all year and fortunately obtained a grade of 99.5%. Missouri Military Academy reached new heights and knocked the inspection out of the park.” — Cadet Colton Lucas

Raiders
Raiders is a team that overcomes very daunting tasks and completes them in set times. If they wish to complete the task and place in competition, they have to beat a time limit. Raiders is about being agile and swift, but unlike any other sport, you have to go beyond your limits and perform 6-8 different events. Each event requires both stamina and strength, entailing: running, physical training (push-ups, sit-ups, and pull-ups), obstacles that they have to climb over, crawl in the mud, or have to endure long and drawn out tasks.

At MMA, a group of boys ride horses regularly through the equestrian program, guided by Mrs. Christine Nowlin, program director. When at the stables, cadets clean the horses, saddle them up, and are ready to ride. All around the back campus are looping trails which allow cadets to ride for hours. Out on the trails cadets experience a sense of serenity and engage with the great outdoors. For many, equestrian time is a favorite part of life at MMA

Fusileers Get in Step Top team — Competing in the Association of Military Colleges & Schools of the United States (AMCSUS) 2019 Annual Drill Competition, the MMA Fusileer Drill Team won first place against 29 other military schools.
“The Fusileers Drill Team is a team of cadets that, through the years, has been invited to inaugurations for U.S. presidents and various sporting venues. They have also performed for families and friends at major MMA Family Weekends and held multiple national titles. The Drill Team is built on perfection and is comprised of young men that want to be a part of something that they can make their own. Military drill moves are just that: military drill moves, but when a cadet learns to manipulate the rifle and turn those precision military moves into an art, then you have the Fusileers. Dress and Cover!” — Rick Dehlinger '93, Deputy Commandant of Activities and Support

The 2019 MMA Rifle Team had a great year of growth. Coming off of a modest 2018 season, we added Mr. Mike Shoemaker as a very talented shooting coach. Along the way we refined our shooting positions, more closely controlled the point of squeeze, and developed mental management. As important, we learned of being dependable, honest, and good teammates. We achieved many great accolades this year, earning numerous individual achievements such as top shots, individual position honors, and several team achievements for both veteran and rookie teams. In fact, our rookie team took first place in a 77 team postal match! “I’m very proud of our team, but in particular, five cadets made it to rifle nationals this year. I look forward to building on our developments of this year and returning to Camp Perry to represent the very best of the Missouri Military Academy again next year. Go Colonels!” — Major Mike Shoemaker, Rifle Team Coach

Colophon The 84th volume of the Taps yearbook was produced by Mr. Justin Carmickle's Publications Class on laptop computers using Balfour Studio Works software. Design elements were designed by Balfour. Photographs were edited using Adobe Photoshop CC and Lightroom assic C. The 192-page book and its cover were printed by Balfour in Dallas, Texas. The 2019 Taps was printed in full color on 100# matte paper. The cover was submitted to Balfour as a PDF. Pages were submitted with Studio Works. MMA’s yearbook representative is Liz Bardin. MMA’s account executive is Catherine Simoneaux. Written content was compiled by the Pubhcations Class from sources including local news media, written interviews, face-to-face interviews, email surveys, and written letters. Photographic content was contributed by Pubheations Class photographers, free-lance cadet photographers, Annie O’Neill, and the MMA Marketing Department. Special thanks to Rick Dehlinger, Rick Grabowski, Jeremy Beard, Mark Tompkins, Cheryl Morris, Ryan Pfannkuch, Jenny O’Donley, and Connor Pearson. Photos were primarily shot using Canon, Sony, and Nikon DSLRs, with additional photos shot using cell phone cameras. Formal portraits were shot by Inter State Studio at a minimal fee.
The portraits of three senior cadets were removed due to their intentional misrepresentation of their rank and officer status. The cover, page spreads, and layouts were designed by the Publications Class, with help from the MMA Marketing Department. Portrait section layouts were designed by Balfour. Content was created from August 2018 to June 2019. Typefaces used throughout the book are Valencia, Lifetime, and Olympia-Mediumcond. Body text is set at 15 point, with captions set at 13. Yearbook advertisements were sold at $300 for a full page, $150 for a half page, and $75 for a quarter page. Content, grade classifications, and sports scores are accurate as of June 2019. Opinions expressed in this pubbeation do not represent those of Missouri Military Academy or its administrators. Errors or omissions are unintentional, and we apologize for them.
