LOOKING FORWARD On August 24th, the Soybean Festival in downtown Mexico, Missouri, was in full swing. To kick off the event, the corps of cadets participated in the Soybean Parade, an annual event showcasing different groups and organizations in Mexico. With the batallion staff leading the way, the corps marched through the town with pride. After the parade, the cadets were able to enjoy some time out in the town and visit the multiple stands and stores in their new town.

On September 8th, the cadets enjoyed the amazing, high flying action at the Spirit of St. Louis Airshow. Cadet William Barber '20 stated, "I loved the air show. It was so much fun watching the air drills and looking at all the military vehicles and just being able to spend time with my friends."

Fall Family Weekend gave cadets an opportunity to reconnect and see their families. This is the first time new boys have seen their families since the beginning of the school year. It's a big weekend for both old and new boys with the Senior Ring Ceremony and Dance and the Passing Through Ceremony. Parents, friends, and faculty have the privilege of participating in both events, one presenting the senior ring which represents the closing of a long journey and the other presenting a hat brass which represents the beginning of a new journey. Cadet Heavens '21 beats the bass drum during the Fall Passing Through Ceremony.

Cadet Roberto Rodriguez '20 serves as Keeper of the Flame in the annual Fall Family Weekend Convocation.

Classroom Visits Fall Family Weekend offers parents the opportunity to sit in with their sons as they go through an academic day. Some teachers will prepare special lessons to involve the parents while others will maintain their curriculum to provide parents with an authentic experience.

Seniors celebrate their final year

The Senior Ring Dance is a celebration for the senior class after gaining the right to wear the Missouri Military Academy Senior Class of 2020 Ring. A dinner with family, guests, and faculty is served by SAGE Dining and followed by the Grand March. After years of hard work and dedication, MMA seniors have the opportunity to celebrate their accomplishments. The ring is the ultimate symbol of their pride and hardwork, because only those who graduate from MMA are permitted to wear a ring.

At the end of every season, Missouri Military Academy hosts a banquet in honor of our players' hard work and resilience. The banquets are where athletes receive their varsity letters and team captains get a final chance to speak on behalf of their teams. Cadets enjoy the banquets because of the great food and the opportunity to watch their brothers receive hard-earned awards.

Evensong Held at Mexico Methodist Church, Evensong is described as "a festival of lessons and carols." Evensong is a celebration of the Christmas story. The program at MMA began in 1941, less than a month after Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and serves as a joyful way for cadets to begin their winter furlough as a peaceful and musical send-off.

The cadet choir perform one of their pieces for the 78th annual Evensong. One of their featured pieces "Silent Night" had its first verse sung in German.

Military Band and Choir Festival

The Missouri Military Academy Band traveled to Virginia to compete at the 44th annual National Military School Band and Choir Festival held at RandolphMacon Academy February 21-23, 2020. For the third straight year, MMA Band won the Ronald Horton award (the best prepared school award) at the festival.

First chairs are the cadets who tried out at the band festival, and got first out of all the people who played their same instrument. Making them the best of all cadets in the US. Maroon & Gold Auction Each year, MMA hosts the Maroon and Gold Gala and Auction. This year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was a virtual event with parents, alumni, and guests attending via a livestream video. Senior Banquet 2020 Awards

The annual Senior Banquet is a time for seniors to come together and share one last dinner together. It's a time full of reminicsing, awards, and recognitions. This year, MMA livestreamed the event so that family and friends could tune in from home. Distance learners were able to Zoom in and interact with their brothers, too.

On May 15, 2020, cadets from the 131st Corps of Cadets participated in the annual Final Formation ceremony. Normally joined by the full corps and in full view of all MMA families, this ceremony was more private this year. Most of the corps had left campus earlier in the week, an early departure necessitated by COVID-19 precautions. This is the last time the 131st Corps will form up together and also serves as a ceremony to send the seniors off to the next chapter of their lives. The ceremony begins with the corps marching onto front campus together, then an order is given for the senior officers to fall out and march toward the battalion commander and his staff. Standing in an honorable formation, the senior officers draw their sabers and plant them in the ground followed by the command of “uncover.” The officers then remove their barracks caps and place them on top of their sabers. This symbolizes the officers leaving their last mark on campus. Minutes after the officers return to the original formation, the cannon is fired and the 131st corps of cadets is dismissed and the year is officially over.

Armed with a freshly painted pool, the swim team took to the water for the first time since 2013. Coach Matthias McManus led the 2019-20 team to multiple meets thoughout Missouri. Although there were statecontending swimmers on the team, the team was unable to find themselves a place in the Missouri State High School Activites Association state swim meet. However, the team used swim meets to test themselves in real competition settings. The team's final record was 3W-6L.

Our Raiders Team trains for the JROTC nationally sanctioned Raiders Competition, a military style competition conducted with an 8-man team. Equestrian

Equestrian, which can also be called horseback riding, can be referred to as the skill of riding horses. Equestrian can be for recreational purposes and competitive sport. Mrs. Christy Nowlin coaches MMA's Equestrian Program.

HISTORY IS MADE (AGAIN)

William Baker '20 made MMA history this year when he placed 5th nationally at the JROTC National Rifle Competition. The MMA team has competed at the national level for the last several years, and with each passing year, the team moves higher and higher up the ladder of success. Baker has been a keystone member of the team this year, and he has high hopes and even higher expectations for the team, the cadets, and the Academy they represent.

During Homecoming 2019, Missouri Military Academy honored former Academy President Col. Charles R. Stribling ’44, who spent more than 75 years in dedicated service to MMA and its mission, with a statue dedication spearheaded by the Alumni Association. Artist Javier Campuzano ’82 created the life-sized bronze statue of Stribling standing with a cadet modeled after Phil Baum ’63, who donated funds for the materials for the project.

As the cadets came back on campus, the MMA Board of Trustees hosted a barbeque to welcome them and faculty to the new school year. Both cadets and faculty were really excited about this event as it was one of the first events to be held on campus for the school year. The Board of Trustees organized this event to celebrate the corps and a new school year. Board members were very thoughtful as they served ice cream for the cadets and faculty on the hot and sunny day.

The Crucible is a series of challenges and events that cadets must overcome in order to complete Maroon Phase and become full Missouri Military Academy cadets. The Crucible is held in the fall and the spring semesters.

Eugene Field

Eugene Field Elementary After a long day's work the seniors pose for a picture in front of Eugene Field school.

Each year, MMA cadets contribute roughly 8,000 hours of community service hours collectively – from cleaning up parks, to spending time with kids and veterans, to working with food-share programs like the Central Missouri Food Bank and Buddy Pack Program.

Selected MMA cadets annually participate in the Lunch Buddy program, regularly visiting a Mexico Public School District's elementary school to eat lunch, play at recess, and serve as mentors for local kids.

Annual Group Photo Every year cadets and their lunch buddies attend a Christmas party held on campus. After the cadets and their lunch buddies ate, they took a picture in the Barnard Hall atrium and continued with the festivities.

COLOR & Fusileer

The Color Guard, commanded by Cadet Ruby Kagaragwa performed in various events throughout the year; these include sports events, miscellaneous parades/ events, and competitions. This year the Color Guard performed in two major sporting events; the Cardinals vs. Cubs game and the Kansas City vs. Green Bay Packers game. This year was also their most competitive and successful year. They competed in a total of six competitions in Ozark, Waynesville, Joplin, Smith Cotton, Leavenworth, and Blue Springs. The Color Guard qualified for drill nationals in Richmond, Virginia and national drill championship in Daytona Beach, Florida. However due to the outbreak of the coronavirus the competitions were canceled.

Cadets Shane Macon '21, Ruby Kagaragwa '20, Dhalil Belko '21, and Sun Kit Tsui '21 march onto the drill floor.

Leavenworth was their last competition this year, and their first competition out of state. Altogether the Color Guard competed in four events, winning four first place trophies, one second place trophy, and one third place trophy.

The Color Guard pose with the Fusileer team. They earned a total of five trophies in exhibition, regulation, and color guard.

This year the Fusileers and Color Guard earned over 20 trophies, picking up trophies in every competition they took part in. It became a tradition to hold the trophies up after every competition and yell "sexy!" on three.

"Railsplitters is one of those very unique things you can only find in a place like MMA. Waking up, rolling out of a tent older than your parents, putting on clothes older than them, and strapping on boots similar to those worn by many of our grandfathers is something of a surreal experience. We have the opportunity as Railsplitters to recreate, as best we can, the experiences of many who have come long before us. We all take it very seriously. We have to. Railsplitters is a reenactment group that Missouri Military Academy cadets participate in every year. They recreate battles and the living conditions that World War II American soldiers experienced. They receive authentic-looking weapons, supplies, and uniforms. They take this opportunity to learn, hands-on, about the war’s history and really experience what life was like during the war.

Ahlam Jaber is a freelance artist that came to speak to Ms. Wallace's 4th period physics class. She spoke about careers that cadets may not have previously thought about and encouraged them to find what their passion really is.

Weight Lifting

A powerlifting meet was scheduled in Jefferson City on April 11 through the Warriors Powerlifting Federation. However, due to COVID-19, the meet was cancelled. Coach Thomas Allen arranged with the meet director to have a meet with just MMA cadets in our own weight room on April 25th through Zoom. The judges were all able to instruct the meet through Zoom, making our MMA cadets the only lifters to compete in a powerlifting meet this Spring.

Recognition Of Cadets

The definition of an award is, a prize or other mark of recognition given in honor of an achievement. Awards come in many shapes, sizes and different variations. An award can be a certificate, a medal, a pin, a ribbon or a verbal complement. Regardless of how an award is presented, cadets receive the award with open arms and grateful hearts. During the spring awards, cadets were recognized for hard work, teamwork, leadership and grit. These cadets were recognized for their achievement in activities such as art, band, Fusileers, weight lifting and color guard. Congratulations to all cadets who were recognized for their devotion to Missouri Military Academy.

A Brain Break The Well Done Day celebration is a recognition of hard work academically, and behaviorally. Assistant Academic Dean Jaime Schutte said, “The celebration also gave them an opportunity to connect with teachers in a different way within the boundaries of structured, mandatory fun! Cadets Express Themselves The art room has been a bastion for cadets wanting to express their individual creativity in a constructive manner. Cadet Art Made to Amaze Art Instructor Mrs. Cheryl Morris gives cadets the tools and creative freedoms to produce some interesting expressions of themselves and their interests.

Mrs. Jessica Miller joined MMA's teaching faculty this year as the science and robotics instructor. She is always making sure her students feel appreciated and accomplished. She took a day to give her students awards that highlighted their strong suits and talents.

Franklin the bearded dragon quickly won the hearts of cadets. He was all they could talk about for the first few weeks after he arrived on campus. Not only is a class pet an incentive for students to do well in class so they can interact with it, but class pets also teach responsibility and empathy.

Cadet Joshua Goss '20 served as team captain, Cadet William English '20, Cadet Michael Naughton '20, Cadet Hamish Lindsey '21, Cadet Caleb Chamberlain '22, Cadet Nolan Madrigrano '22, and Cadet Bryce Bowen '21 were the eight participants for this competition.

A team of seven Missouri Military Academy high school cadets earned third place in the annual Association of Military Colleges & Schools of the United States (AMCSUS) scholarship bowl competition.

During the competition, teams were given 30 minutes to answer a series of varied and complex math, language, and logic-based questions that challenged them to not only think outside of the box but to answer as many questions correctly in that short amount of time.

I was one of the "guinea pigs" used to test the program and I'm glad we were able to continue it from my first year. Through MMA’s unique College Triumph Program, qualifying cadets can finish high school at MMA and earn their associate degree at the same time by taking courses with our academic partner, William Woods University (WWU), ranked as one of the top universities in the Midwest. WWU faculty come to our campus to teach cadets at MMA, while some cadets also travel to WWU’s nearby campus to take classes. The COVID-19 pandemic forced WWU to move all classes to an online format for the 2nd half of the Spring 2020 semester.

136 MMA Containment

How We BEAT COVID-19

When faculty came back to campus after Spring Break, they held a meeting about how life was about to change.

MMA has been doing their absolute best to help stop the spread of COVID-19. Our senior class has been greatly affected by this outbreak, although we are all dealing with it accordingly. All of the cadets at MMA have been using hand sanitizer as they head to lunch. While everyone is at lunch, there are only four people per table to distance everyone out. While standing in line, everyone is also to stand six feet apart to minimize the chance of spreading the disease through touch, which is one of the most popular ways of spreading it. In the barracks, all cadets have been cleaning beyond their daily routine. We have been wiping down handles and commonly touched things. All cadets were required to turn their phone in at one point so they could all be sanitized, since we all know that is one of the most used items in our possession. MMA has been sending out emails for the past few weeks about how to properly wash your hands. All cadets have taken this very seriously as we do our part in flattening the curve.

GRADE Seventh grade is the youngest class at Missouri Military Academy. Cadets that come during their seventh grade year are brand new and have a lot to learn. Colophon

The 65th volume of the Taps yearbook was produced by Ms. Sarah Stott's Publications class on laptop computers using Jostens Yearbook Avenue software. Design elements were designed by Jostens. Photographs were edited using Adobe Photoshop CC and Lightroom Classic CC. The 192-page book and its cover were printed by Jostens in full color. MMA's yearbook representative is Lucas McCain. Written content was compiled by the Publications Class from sources including local news media, written interviews, face-to-face interviews, and email surveys. Photographic content was contributed by Publications Class photographers, free-lace cadet photographers, and the MMA Marketing Department. Special thanks to Rick Dehlinger, Rick Grabowski, Jeremy Beard, Mark Tompkins, Cheryl Morris, Ryan Pfannkuch, Jimmy Peyton, Jenny O'Donley, and Connor Pearson. Photos were primarily shot using Canon, Sony, and Nikon DSLRs, with additional photos shot using cell phone cameras. The portrait of one senior cadet was removed due to their intentional misrepresentation of their rank and officer status. The cover, page spreads, and layouts were designed by the Publications Class, with help from the MMA Marketing Department. Content was created from August 2019 to May 2020.
