An “Emergency” is: • Each excavator must have his own ticket number. You cannot legally work off of someone else’s ticket number. • It is important to provide a good contact phone number on your locate request. • White line the dig site to increase locator speed and accuracy.
• Legal definition – “A sudden, unexpected occurrence presenting a clear and imminent danger demanding immediate action to prevent or mitigate loss or damage to life, health, property or essential public services.”
An
“Emergency” is not:
• Do not trust anyone else to call in your locate request or to relay ticket information. Use “Ticket Search” and print out the ticket for field reference.
• The type of ticket to use when you have not scheduled your work in advance. • Legal if it does not meet the definition of the law.
• Confirm utility response. Before beginning excavation, you must have corresponding marks or have been notified of “No Facilities” for each of the utilities named on your locate request.
An excavator placing an Emergency locate request not meeting the definition of the law is now eligible for billing by the utilities for the cost associated with the false locate request.
