Mistral moved its R&D location to the Indian Ocean Island of They say, ’12 months is a long time in Mauritius, which has been essential for improving our facilities, designing and testing year round. Conversely, new areas of the world are just catching on to the idea and this is typically in more remote parts of the world and in areas where there are many other water sports options.

2016 has been a year of tough decisions and considering the big picture for Mistral. We are more than confident with our range of inflatable boards, both in terms of form and function. Graphically they represent some of the prettiest and most appealing board on the market. We needed to fill some gaps, address key interest groups, whether this was river paddlers, yoga and fitness, families, entry levels, racing and the yacht and boat market. This we achieved.

Mistral made an appearance on FOX19 TV USA thanks to Clare Karp who runs a Pilates and SUP Yoga Company which provided great brand exposure and support of our boards within this area of interest and Seychelle Hattingh continued in her winning ways racing in Florida. We also looked into the possibility of a new windsurfing system which promised an adjustable rocker system, the Variable Rocker Trim System (VRTS), which met much interest, mixed reviews of interest. After careful consideration, we shelved the idea, but it was not through a lack of willingness on our part to see if we could offer the windsurfing world a final solution to an age old wish to have a rocker line that could be adjusted for faster planing and a smoother ride. Our hard board race range, has also been very well received and from our small but successful offering of the Vortex 14, Equinox 14 and Slip Stream 12’6, we can say that these boards in the hands of our team riders, have more than proven themselves in major events. As a result of this, we have many quality paddlers wanting to ride with us and share our journey and to be associated with the iconic brand.

As with every season, the coming of the spring in Europe is a key moment in knowing what sort of spring will be had - if the weather is good, sales will be good. In 2016 the weather was very poor and everywhere, SUP was slow to get going on account of this factor.

APRIL 2K16

APRIL 5 Mistral inflatable Santa Anna WindSUP boards competed in a windsurfing race hosted by the Japanese Windsurfing Association. Mistral's long standing reputation and windsurfing legacy is ensuring it is stand out amongst the crowd. The brand is a crowd- pleaser wherever in the world it is found. Japan is an intriguing and exciting market where watersports is keenly participated in and where Mistral still holds a warm place in the Japanese hearts. We are working closely here to develop ever stronger roots.

Above, the first Dutch Vortex customer Ms Elske Wind. In April our hardboards for 2016 arrived in our warehouse. Bought at EasySup SUP store in Heeg, Elske was super stoked with her new board. Janneke Smits, one of Holland’s National Champions and sweetheart of the racing scene, joined Mistral adding it’s impetus in the Dutch market. Janneke, also a white water rafting champion, tested many boards, before settling for the formidable Vortex.

Meanwhile in the UK, the first of our production hardboard range began to trickle into the country which was soon to be followed by 2 very big wins by a new female paddler on the UK scene.

MISTRAL RED DOT PADDLE DIVISION - THE YEAR THAT WAS 2016 APRIL Sunday 17th April 2016. Mistral newcomer, Ginnie Odetayo wins the UK’s prestigious 9 mile Head of the Dart River Race, paddling a 12’6 Production MISTRAL SLIPSTREAM, securing 1st place in the 12’6 Female Division and 1st overall ahead of all other 14’ Female Division paddlers, 5 mins ahead of her nearest rival, setting a new course record. Ginnie who is from Cornwall England, is a relative newcomer to SUP and has made her mark early in the season with a fantastic result, proving her unique ability and the speed and versatility of Mistral’s 12’6 Slipstream. In a minor upset, Mistral’s Ryan James, paddling a MISTRAL VORTEX, was narrowly beaten into 2nd place on the line, but his time also beat the previous record.

Dutch paddler, Mike Kranenburg, well known for his charitable paddling efforts, signed up with Mistral but was later injured and had to rest up for most of the season and we wish him well for 2017. Above Ginnie setting her course record.

Right. You have to love this photo of Seychelle - displaying radiant physical prowess on her way to another podium finish paddling her stock 'early prototype' Slipstream. The Slipstream in the same month, set a new British Record Time for the Classic Head of the Dart 9 mile river race and crossed the line in 1st place at the prestigious Battle of the Thames Race in London, powered by Ginnie Odetayo. This board gained a winning reputation, together with its alterego, the Vortex. This board also make a great Touring Board at 28" (Malia) wide with rear cargo net - super stable and comfortable! Top right, Mistral rider Kimo Kersting placed 2nd and 3rd in two SUP races. Sports Vibrations have supported him for the last 2 years and Kimo has continued to improve throughout this time. Since Kimo was a child, he has been fascinated by water. In 2014 he visited a SUP festival and was instantly intrigued. "It is such a great feeling of freedom when I'm in the water with a board and a paddle. It's just a breathtaking feeling." Kimo was nominated for the Mercedes-Benz SUP World Cup.

Jonas placed 2nd in the Brazilian Championships and in Tahiti, after a nerve-wrecking 24km and nearly 2 hours Mistral team rider Steeve Teihotaata clinched Victory to win the prestigious Air France Tahitian Paddle Festival paddling on the Equinox 14'. This was not just any 'Win' but indeed a 'defining win' a 'seminal moment', for Steeve and for Mistral, triumphing over not one titan of the stand up paddleboarding world, but two, in that of Georges Cronsteadt and Titouan Puyo (and new comer and Team EDT team mate paddler Rete Ebb). Mistral's female paddler, Seychelle Hattingh triumphed at the Florida Cup in the USA, in fine form on her 12'6 Slipstream. "Smashed it today at the 2016 Florida Cup in St Pete. 1st place female. What a great race. Excellent course, nice weather. 9 miles of fun, mostly flat and just a little bit of wind, waves, and beach starts to keep it exciting. Awesome day for using my Mistral SUP 12'6" Slipstream!"

Meanwhile in Brazil, Mistral played its part during the carrying of the Olympic Torch and Steevie and Seychelle arrived in Europe for the Euro Tour, finishing 4th and 2nd respectively at St Maxine.

Lost Mills Germany May 27th 2016. Seychelle became the fastest paddler on EARTH. Another success for the Mistral Vortex 14’. Following this, under hot and humid conditions in Bavaria, Seychelle Hattingh, paddling her Mistral Vortex 14' Flat Water Race board finished in 2nd position behind Germany's Sonni Honscheid, announcing to the world her place amongst the world's best, following on from her Worlds Fastest Women win the day before. Meanwhile Steeve Teihotaata paddling a Mistral Equinox 14' board, finished 7th in a tightly contended race train behind fellow Tahitian Georges Cronsteadt. The Equinox performed sensationally, given it is designed for open water conditions. Seychelle and Steeve representing Mistral against a veritable sea of Starboard contenders who certainly did not get it all their own way. Special mention also to Janneke Smits paddling a Vortex 14' who finished in 9th place in the women's division.
