Rabindra Shrestha Residence A modern abode for family of 3 was to be designed for the client Rabindra Shrestha at Ramkot, Nagarjuna Municipality. With the area of approximately three annas and two paisa (43’x 28’), we were given a list of requirements to be addressed at that very small plot. Project type: Residential Location: Ramkot, Nagarjuna Municipality Site area: 1204 Sq. Ft (0-3-2-0) User: Shrestha Family

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT We had the opportunity of executing this project from the very beginning. Systematic steps of design development was followed starting from site analysis, tentative requirements of the client, case studies, conceptualization, creation of various design option and so on.
1. SITE DETAIL AND BYE-LAWS: • • • • •
South-west facing plot with 20’ wide road on the front Ground coverage:70% FAR: 1.75 Setback: 1.5 m Area calculation: Site area: 1204 sq. ft Built up area: 1204 x 1.75=2107 sq.ft Ground floor: 70% of 1204= 840 sq. ft
2. CLIENT’S REQUIREMENT AND PROGRAM FORMULATION Client basically wanted a modern bungalow style design of 2.5 storey comprising of set of following tentative requirements: •
•
•
Ground Floor • Living Room • Kitchen +Dining • Parking • Store • Powder room First floor • Owner’s Bedroom with attached bathroom • Daughter’s Bedroom • Guest Room • Common toilet • Balcony Second floor • Bedroom • Puja room • Common bathroom with Laundry • Terrace
3. CASE STUDIES Our aim was to create a space that would become focal point of the whole design. To realize that more, we did a lot of international case studies mainly of small area plots as of our own. Most of them were in India which we felt could be relatable to our own social, cultural, and climatic aspects.

a. The House in 1970/ Architects collaborative
A compact house of area 1,100 Sq. ft in Janakpuri, New Delhi consists of a design where luxury is not affected by materials but the character of the space. Major take away of this project for us was the double heighted courtyard which becomes an interaction pivot overlooked by private spaces above.
b. Arham house /Dipen Gada and associates
Built in a tight size plot of 1540 Sq. ft Varodhara, Arham ‘s exterior is very simple and needful being subtle and stands out in the surrounding. An important element in all the floors is a very sleek folded metal staircase, catching the attention through the play of bold color. The perforated Screen in the front of stair block lets in the sunlight playing a magical role .

4. CONCEPTUALIZATION
5. INITIAL PHASE PLANNING
After the case studies, we were inspired to design a residence which would create an experience of spaciousness and freshness even in a tight plot like ours. The concept of creating double heighted space and a green pocket space in the form of courtyard was what we focused on.
Area allocation
Digitalization of plans
These conceptual sketches and sections shows connection between different levels as well as space and volume. And helped us to show ventilation by stack effect and visual connection in that very space.

RESEARCH We made some quick research and literature reviews for standards for Hospital and basic requirements for a Cancer Hospital. We referred some Hospital planning and our mentor guided us through out this process. After making some research we traced out the standard requirements of different faculties required for a cancer hospital. Cancer treatment is becoming more integrated with other clinical disciplines and typically includes any or all of the following in any combination: • • • • • • •
Surgery. Chemotherapy (medical oncology). Radiotherapy. Paediatric oncology. Nuclear medicine. Diagnostic services (radiology and pathology). Allied medicine: physiotherapy, oncology social work, counselling, dietetics, palliative supportive care, emergency care, etc
UNDERSTANDING THE REQUIREMENTS A typical facility should consist of, or comprise a combination of, the following five main functional areas Reception, administration and waiting area, Clinical consulting areas, External beam radiotherapy (EBRT),Brachytherapy, Imaging and treatment planning.
CONCEPTUALIZATION
Some requirements: Medical department –OPD and IPD Chemotherapy unit Radiation treatment – Bunkers (ERBT, Brachytherapy, Radio imaging unit) Surgical department- Operation theatre, Post OT, Intensive Care Unit (ICU) Emergency DepartmentPharmacy Administration department Teaching unit Mortuary Power plant Cafeteria with kitchen Hostel

The main concept was to provide free circulation of space enhancing proper circulation of light and ventilation. We started out with a courtyard and zoning different areas of the hospital around it. The courtyard functions as a nucleus of the hospital. The reception area is provided with double heighted space to giving a grandeur look. The double heighted space and courtyard helps in creating a stack ventilation effect.

Design Station Office We were also involved in design of our firm at new a place in Chakupat. Rustic industrial theme has been chosen for the interior of this project. Along with furniture design, all other task was carried out by our team, and we had the chance to supervise this project as well I have designed meeting table, 4-seater sofa, coffee table and inset shelf as shaded in the floor plan.
RESEARCH Rustic industrial design reminds the mixture of both urban and rural worlds. Metal and wood Rustic Wood furniture gives traditional vibe whereas exposed metal shows modern industrial feature. Metallic color palette Bold and bright colors are usually avoided. Some browns and dark navy blues are used but most importantly key feature of this design is metallic color palette like silver, Gray, and gold.

The main idea was to make the bar area focal point of the restaurant. Major challenge of this project was existing columns which were numerous. Various layout was experimented with different types of seating like Sofa seaters, table, ledge seating etc. according to age zone and number of people (group or single). Following is the preliminary plan of first floor that I had created for first client discussion.

Hotel at Dhumbarahi A semi- commercial floor plan was to be created in a commercially valuable part of Kathmandu. This project was more of a learning exercise to us, to understand the concept of basement planning and planning in such a way that we must utilize each feet square of the site. The building would have a flexible floor plan, so owner can rent it, or break it down to 2 or 3 rentable space, can convert it into hotel or an apartment building. So basically, it did not have a fixed requirement as the whole building would be “MULTIPURPOSE” Project type: Semi commercial Location: Dhumbarahi, Kathmandu Site area: 5975.56 Sq.ft (0-8-7-0)

Bhawan Bhatta Residence
Mr. Bhawan Bhatta, a former NRN president wanted to renovate his existing residence’s interior which would be inspired from Japanese minimalistic design. EXISTING CONDITION
RESEARCH Japanese Minimalistic design revolves around a serene, uncluttered style, prioritizing a balance of nature and man-made furnishing. Peaceful, simplicity and unpretentious way of life forms the basis of Japanese culture which has also inspired the Japanese architecture. This style has a quiet, meditative feel that encourages those in the space to take a step back to enjoy simple things in life. Some key elements of Japanese minimalistic style: •
•
•
Low to ground furniture
•
Called ‘shoji’ made from rice paper, now made from Transparent glass helps to save space and allows more light.
Stained wood •
•
•
Sliding door
Most Japanese interiors include movable floor cushions that forgo actual chair and sofas. However, most modern homeowners still require actual furniture, so the modern renditions of this aesthetic is replaced with low to ground furniture.
Wood is stained instead of coloring. Wood staining protects and preserves the natural beauty of the wood as opposed to paint.
Japanese style Entry way
•
The Japanese-style entryways make for a more explicit way of shoe removal. The entrance of the home is often set at a lower level from the rest of the home, so dust and dirt do not enter. It also makes for a good transitional space between indoors and outdoors.
Fig: Sliding door
Fig: Stained wood
Fig: Entry way
•
Natural lighting •
Minimalist design and open spaces reign in Japanese interiors, and one way to achieve this design aesthetic would be the use of natural lighting. Research has also proven that natural lighting helps us be more productive, happier and calmer as well.
•
•
•
PROPOSAL PRESENTATION
Rock gardens Rock gardens typically consist of rocks, water features and some greenery atop of sand or gravel. They were intended to imitate the essence of nature and served to encourage meditation about the meaning of existence.
After the research on Japanese minimalistic style and its elements, I proceeded to collect more reference images that would give the idea of how we can transform the space. Following is the sample of a proposal sheet representing existing bar area which is to be converted into library.
Straw mats •
Traditional Japanese homes have tatami(Straw mats) laid in rooms, as opposed to parquet flooring as it is cool in the summer and warm in the winter. When freshly laid out, there is a fresh, grassy scent that wafts through the room that calms and soothes the mind.

Small-Scale housing A small-scale housing is to built in Morang. It is a small-scale housing in terms of plot size, floor area, and the cost reduction techniques to be used while constructing this house. The cost of construction is to be reduced by using locally available materials and local man powers. Recycled as well as old materials are to be reused for stairs, windows and rails. This housing units are to built by concrete blocks as a load bearing structure. Project type :Small Scale housing Client : Belbari Housing Location : Morang Area: 480 sq.ft. per plot
CLIENT REQUIREMENT We were given a task to design a housing plot whose floor area is not to be exceeded than 900sq ft with following set of requirements. Ground Floor • Living Room • Kitchen+ Dining • Bathroom • Store • Bedroom
First Floor • 3 Bedrooms
Fig: Conceptual Drawings.
We were assigned to design a conceptual plan and 3D in a short span of time. So, after referring some small-scale housing projects, we made some conceptual sketches and made plans and 3Ds and submitted to our mentor.
CONCEPTUALIZATION The small-scale housing units are designed so as to provide ample amount of light and ventilation. The house is designed with a minimalistic approach that meets the basic requirements. We conceptualized that the two adjacent housing units to be symmetrical so as to obtain a communal space for 2 families. The staircase is located at the front with top to bottom glazed walls which creates a different experience during vertical circulation at different time of a day as a result of changing daylight
In the short span of time, we were able to conceptualize this low-cost housing unit in which we got a basic idea on how small-scale housing units are designed in limited space and what are the factors that helps in making small scale housing cost efficient.

Belbari housing This housing project consists of 3 type of plots based on floor areas. So, we were assigned to improvise the plan as per 3Ds and to draw municipal drawings as well as electrical and sanitary drawings. This project is currently in the stage of municipal approval. I had to make 2 municipal drawings, one as load bearing structure and later after the structural analysis by our structural engineer, I had to improvise it to Frame structure. Site Observation
The most memorable experience for me during this practicum was the times when we had to visit various sites and various projects. I am really fascinated by how a design from a paper comes to shape and along with that I got to explore various parts of the city. Observing every detail, asking queries to the workers, understanding how and why things are made, and measuring the site were some activities done.

THINGS I LEARNED DURING SITE STUDY AND MEASUREMENT Site study and measurement is the foremost thing we must do before starting the design process. It is important to be insightful and have sense of “Genius Loci“, as this can be a major factor for driving our coming design steps. We must keep following things in our mind while carrying out site measurement:
• • •
Property line Try to measure from permanent reference point Triangulation : note down the distances by triangulation
Architectural Features • • • •
Identifying N-S direction Site analysis Site surrounding • Any specific architectural or cultural site • Existing buildings Access to the site • Width-Right of way • Entry way to site
Topography •
Site condition- Contour, Plain, undulating etc
Services • •
Water supply and Sewage pipelines and their whereabouts electrical accessibility and electric poles

Future classroom design This was the first Nationwide design competition I had taken part in. The classroom will be designed for the Children of Dhoksan. The Shree Shiladevi primary school is situated on a hill, overviewing the mountain village Dhoksan. Alike many villages around the area of Sankhu, local inhabitants are very well connected, many are sharing the identity of Tamang culture and language. More and more children are longing for proper qualifications.
Location: Shree Shiladevi Primary school, Dhoksan, Shankarapur Site Area: 5m x 10m Status: Design Competition Team : Pratima Gurung, Prity Dhungana, Supriya Sharma

REJUVINATING THE TEACHING-LEARNING EXPERIENCE As we were reminiscing, our school days, we had flashing memories of games we played with friends, those sweet memories of laughter and that feeling of accomplishment when we finished any group project that we toiled. What we came to realize is that the memories embedded are of those times spent with friends. So, we have tried to create a classroom that would help the students to interact more, explore that joy more to make them feel safer, happier and more inquisitive in all ways possible.

MODEL MAKING
•
The decision we took to take part in this design competition has indeed changed my perspective on architecture.
•
The time I spent on research about pedology, children behavior and psychology, materials and building technique was unlike other projects during the practicum.
•
I have realized that architecture is for all, and every project has its soul, a unique purpose.
•
I have also improved my skills like model making, illustration, writing with the help of my teammates, time management and most importantly TEAMWORK!
