FLYING HOUSE - DHARAMSHALA Foothills

Mountainscape - The Dhauladhar range of mountains, at the foot of Himalayas which the project is located is unlike other ranges of the Himalayas. From the plains to the peak of the range is a very short distance, and as a result, the range appears as an ice clad wall of mountains.

KEDIA RESIDENCE -

INDORE

From its peak, it descends very abruptly to the plains. This particular topography of the region makes it an ideal place for paragliding and it is very common to see gliders floating above the mountains. Equally birds bi of prey are found taking advantage of the rising warm air currents as they reach the Dhauladhar range.

The site of the house is situated on this truncated foothill between two ascending hills.The house roof form acknowledges this very particular microclimate feature of the rising air currents through its roof form. The formequally allows for an opportunity to lift upwards towards the two key views; the snowclad mountains and the plains below. belo

Plains

MOUNTAINSCAPE Dhauladhar Range Ecological aspects of the roof: On a conceptual scale of the project, we have interpreted sustainability not only from an environmental aspect, but also from a community development and skill augmentation point of view. The construction of the house was done using 90% of local labour who were trained in certain new skills, and who’s traditional knowledge base was put to use, particularly in the construction of the roof.

SON’S BEDROOM - PLAN

Ideas from the preciously constructed A- house were furthered in this roofing system. 65% of the slates were sourced from the local mines 7kms away and 35% were salvaged from a demolished building from the village of Sidhbari 6kms away. All the wastage and offcuts from the slate roof were used for the external flooring of the terraces, thus minimizing transportation distance and wastage.
