Mortlock Park in Colonel Light Gardens Council, as part of the review of parks and reserves throughout Colonel Light Gardens, is undertaking improvements to Mortlock Park. These improvements are guided by the recently revised: Master Concept Plan Community Land Management Plan Dog Management Controls Playground Revitalisation Council, with funding assistance from the Local Government Stimulus Grant, will revitalise the existing playground and its surrounds at the northern end of Mortlock Park as part of Stage 1 of the Master Concept Plan. New pathways, seating, bike racks and improved drainage will be

constructed to improve the playground area. Drainage works will commence shortly and it is anticipated that Stage 1 will be substantially completed in January 2015. Dog Management Controls Council, following consultation with the community, introduced new controls which require that dogs be kept on-leash whilst at Mortlock Park if: within 20 metres of the BMX track at all times within 20 metres of the playground equipment at all times

within 20 metres of any person or group of people participating in organised sport or school activities officially convened by licensed sports and school groups within their licensed areas New signage and regular visits by Council will assist to raise awareness of these new controls with users of Mortlock Park when they come into effect in early 2015. BMX Track Maintenance The BMX track at Mortlock Park was upgraded earlier this year to ensure the track is safe for both users and pedestrians and to improve the riders experience.

Copies of these plans and controls and Council reports are available on the City of Mitcham website at http://www.mitchamcouncil.sa.gov.au/clgcommunityland

Summer is Coming As we come up to holidays there are some great things available for everyone. Summer is a time for relaxing and reading a magazine or a good book. Summer holidays are a welcome break for children from the routines of term-time – six weeks of lazy mornings in pyjamas, outings, catching up with friends, bike rides, park trips, making dens, and even getting a little bit bored. This is

where a little bit of stealth learning – hidden in other activities so they don’t really notice it – does more good than harm. Incorporate some sneaky learning into their everyday activities such as: • Get them to write a holiday diary • Send someone some postcards • Read anything and everything together

The Summer Reading Challenge From 15 December children and young adults can sign up at Blackwood or Mitcham Libraries and get a free library bag and

book. Fill in the reading log to be in the draw for an iPod shuffle.

Holiday Program If you are looking for some great school holiday activities through January we are running a craft session on Monday 19 at Mitcham Library

and Tuesday 20 at Blackwood Library, from 2 to 4 pm. Open age for only $5. Bookings are essential.

Get them writing their own book! Dust off those board games or borrow them from the Toy libraries. Think about non-school skills your child could benefit from

learning over the summer too such as learning to ride a bike, crossing roads or, tying up shoelaces.

Are you looking for some new interests for 2015? The Mitcham Library Service runs a variety of regular activities including a chess club, Scrabble group, card group and knitting group. There is also English as a Second Language conversation class every Friday through term times. These are all free and a

great way to meet people and learn a new skill. Throughout the year there are regular author visits, performers, holiday programs and speakers. Our web site, Facebook page and new e-newsletter (The Blurb) can keep you informed of oncoming events.

Blackwood Toy Library The Blackwood Toy Library has recently reopened in a new venue the Blackwood Community Centre, Young Street, Blackwood (adjacent to Coles’ car park). The Toy Library uses one of the Community Centre halls during opening hours which means that we have a lot more room to display our great collection of toys – making selection much easier for our customers. We have bright and colourful new shelving and there is plenty of space for strollers and pushers in the hall. There is dedicated Community Centre parking right next to the building. Our hours have changed a little. We are now open: Tuesday

9.30 am – 11.45 am

Wednesday

9.30 am – 11.45 am

Thursday

4.00 pm – 6.30 pm

Our new phone number is 8278 6779. Toy Library membership is just $30 a year for families and you are welcome to borrow at both Blackwood and Mitcham Toy Libraries but you must return items to the library they were borrowed from. Do come and visit us in our new location sometime soon!

Join a Reading Group Come and join one of the many book discussion groups meeting in the library or in homes. They are a fabulous way to read outside your normal reading areas and to meet new friends.

If you have a group of friends who would like to start a group or if you are an individual who wants to join in with one of ours contact us for more information. There are vacancies for 2015!

A new look You will see a new look at the Libraries with some building work and the introduction of self-serve borrowing, returns

and holds. The staff are excited to now have the time to give you more amazing customer service.

Are YOU Bushfire Ready? PREPARE. ACT. SURVIVE The Bushfire Season for the mount Lofty Fire Ban District begins on 17 November 2014. Are you Bushfire Ready?

It is essential to prepare your home to withstand a Bushfire. If you ignore the need for fuel reduction prior to and during the Fire Danger Season, you may endanger both your own property and the lives and property of your neighbours.

Bushfire prevention is a year round responsibility and necessity. It is far more than a weekend cleanup just prior to the bushfire season. The best time to fight a bushfire is when there is no bushfire around because the best way of protecting your home, property and family from the dangers of bush fires is preparation. Bushfire Ready July August September October

Bushfire Prevention Starts Now Prepare fire breaks. Remove dead branches, fallen leaves and undergrowth. Prune lower tree limbs. Cut long grass within 20 metres of a residential dwelling while on slopes a fuel-reduced zone of 30 metres to 40 metres is recommended. On properties over half a hectare, prepare and maintain a five metre fuel break around fence lines, buildings and equipment sheds. Move bark, heavy mulch, woodpiles and other flammable materials away from the home and other buildings.

November

Council Inspection of Residential Properties Hazard reduction notices sent to land owners. Check all equipment. Prepare and review Bushfire Emergency Plans.

December January February March April

Fire Danger Season 17 November 2014 to 30 April 2015 Maintain fuel reduction practices throughout summer. Check all equipment. Monitor fire restrictions. Keep flammable materials clear of buildings. Rehearse your bushfire survival plan. Remember permits are required to light fires during the Fire Danger Season.

May June

Review Your Plan Review annual clean up program. Remove undergrowth and dead vegetation.

Free Dumping To help Mitcham residents to clear their properties, reduce fuel loads and remove fire hazards, Council will open the Lynton Green Waste Depot (Beagle Terrace) for FREE dumping of green waste on: November Saturday 15, 22 and 29 Monday 17 and 24 December Saturday 6, 13 and 20 Monday 1, 8 and 15 This facility will be FREE with only GREEN WASTE ACCEPTED – NO RUBBISH, and proof of residency will be required. Green waste materials can consist of grass cuttings, leaf matter and prunings (branches no larger than 200 mm (8 inches) in diameter).

Services that will be affected are: Library Services Blackwood Library will be closed. Services will continue to be provided at Mitcham Library.

Waste Collection Domestic waste collection service (blue lid bin), green organic bin (green lid) and the recyclables bin (yellow lid) will not occur. Think Before You Park in the Hills Take care when you park your vehicle on a narrow road in the hills. The parking of cars in many hills’ streets may potentially create serious problems for the local CFS. If access to a fire track or a nearby fire is blocked by cars parked on the side of the road lives and homes could be put at risk. It is a legal requirement under the Australian Road Rules that a road clearance of at least three metres is provided alongside parked vehicles to enable other vehicles to pass. So be aware when you park your vehicle on the road make sure that you allow at least three metres clearance. You may save a life!

A Musical History The Mitcham Village Institute and the Mitcham City Brass band share a long history. The Maggy Ragless Heritage Research room at the Heritage Research Centre was transformed recently with an exhibition illustrating the music and culture of these two Mitcham institutions. The exhibition featured a collection

of superb drums, trophies and early photographs on loan from Mitcham City Brass and gorgeous original dresses from the 1890s to the 1940s loaned by Violet Rowe. Music was first performed at the Mitcham Village Institute even

before the building was completed –with Sunday school children singing hymns on 2 April 1870 as the foundation stone was laid. Just eight years later the first Mitcham band was formed, with rehearsals taking place at the Institute. Throughout its history the Institute has been a centrepiece for community events. Dances, musical performances, balls and humorous sketches have all been staged since the 1870s to raise funds for church groups, sporting clubs, soldiers, scouts and youth groups. Between the late 1940s and early 1950s the Institute was a popular venue for Saturday night movies run by Melvic picture theatres. Although the first Mitcham band disbanded in 1887, the present Mitcham City Brass band has been

in continuous operation since 1901. To celebrate Christmas the band hired a horse and trolley every Christmas Eve, performing carols at each home in the area until Christmas morning. The band continues to perform throughout Adelaide metropolitan area and the hills without the horse and trolley. If you would like to discover more about Mitcham’s local history

or have material that could be of interest to the local history collection please contact Therese Willis, Local History Coordinator on 8372 8261, email mitcham@mitchamcouncil.sa.gov.au or visit the Mitcham Heritage Research Centre, Mitcham Cultural Village, 103 Princes Road, Mitcham between 9.30 am and 4 pm, Tuesday to Thursday or by appointment.

Mitcham Trails Have you discovered the City of Mitcham’s bushland reserves as well as the recent improvements to the shared use trail network? When visiting Council’s trails you will notice a number of changes including new signs, new plantings, trail surface upgrades and the installation of a number of small crossings. Bushland restoration work has been undertaken in Blackwood Hill Reserve including the Magpie Creek Trail. An informal bike jump area has now been restored to bushland. Please respect the restoration works and use only the formed trails. As the weather improves Council’s bushland reserves are a popular place to visit. Trail users are reminded to be safe and ensure you plan your hike, walk or ride. Your safety is our concern but your responsibility. When entering the City of Mitcham’s bushland reserves remember to: Stay hydrated – avoid the hottest part of the day, carry water with you and take breaks

For over 50 years the pageant has been entertaining families with more than 75 floats and 1,200 participants, including vehicle floats, walking groups and bands, making this a highlight for children at Christmas time. The Blackwood Lions Club, in conjunction with the Parade Co-ordinator, local MP Iain Evans and local service clubs, are proud to bring the 2014 Christmas Parade to you. The pageant will start from the corner of Main Road and Gulfview Road, from 6.30 pm and travel along Main Road to Waite Street Reserve. After enjoy the Pageant Fair on Waite Street Reserve, hosted by the Coromandel Rotary Club, where the Pageant floats finish their journey with a variety of stalls and entertainment from 7 to 9 pm. Businesses, schools and clubs are invited to participate in the parade, with a Christmas or children’s theme. For more information contact Charlotte Edmunds at the office of Iain Evans on 8278 5844. Thank you Iain Evans for your commitment over the past 24 years of bringing the Blackwood Christmas Parade to the community.

What goes into the Yellow Recycling Bin? Are you confused about what type of plastic you can put in your yellow recycling bin? Soft plastics, such as plastic bags, cannot be recycled through Council’s kerbside recycling service because they cannot be easily separated and interfere with the automatic sorting machines as they get caught in the conveyor belts and jam spinning wheels. Many people reuse their supermarket plastic carry bags as household garbage bin liners. However, these soft plastics should not be placed in your recycling (yellow lid) bin as they contaminate the recycling stream. Recyclables such as milk cartons, yogurt containers and aluminium cans should be placed separately into your yellow recycling bin. If you place your recyclables into a plastic bag, all your recycling efforts are wasted as the whole bag gets dumped to landfill. This means that valuable resources will never get the opportunity to be recycled.

The soft plastics that cannot be recycled include:  Reusable shopping bags  Produce bags  Bread bags  Frozen food bags  Biscuit and lolly packaging  Newspaper wraps  Old ‘green’ bags Soft plastics can be taken to selected supermarkets for recycling. Check with your local store to see if they provide this service. Alternatively, you can place soft plastics in the general waste bin (blue lid). Don’t forget polystyrene foam is also a soft plastic. All polystyrene foam cups, packaging and meat trays need to go in the blue general waste bin. Ridged plastic containers or those that hold their shape can be recycled and they should go into the yellow lidded bin loose! Don’t forget to remove their lids and give them a quick rinse.

Resilient South Wins National Award for Action on Climate Change The Cities of Mitcham, Onkaparinga, Holdfast Bay and Marion have been recognised by the National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility for action on climate change for the Resilient South Project. The Resilient South Project, a collaboration between the four councils, won the Local Government Champions Award. This award recognises that Resilient South sets the benchmark for local government response to climate change. The National Climate Change Adaptation Research Facility recognised the Resilient South initiative as an Adaptation Champion in 2014 for demonstrating there is strength in numbers, and that action to address climate change can deliver more resilient and sustainable Australian communities. The recently released Resilient South Regional Climate Change Adaptation Plan was prepared with direct involvement from government,

business and community organisations. The plan focuses on the impact of climate change in relation to the region’s economy and infrastructure, environment and natural resources, and social and community values. It provides 57 preferred adaptation options and a timeline for how southern Adelaide can respond to and actively manage the challenges of climate change, including more frequent and intense heatwaves and bushfires, declining rainfall, and rising sea levels. The plan includes a range of actions to improve awareness about the effects of climate change on business and vulnerable people, build greater social connectivity, increase the number of trained emergency

services volunteers, and encourage changes in how public and open spaces are managed. The project is consistent with the National and South Australian Climate Change Adaptation Frameworks and has received funding from the National Disaster Resilience Scheme, the South Australian Government and the four partner councils. The project will now work to prioritise the adaptation options and develop new agreements with existing partners to work on implementing the plan, particularly where there are common issues across the region or the state. If you would like to be a part of Resilient South please contact Natalie Stalenberg on 8384 0532.

Local Knowledge at the Touch of a Button Do you wish you could check easily which bin you should put out on what day? Or see an issue in your community like a pothole or damaged footpath and think about reporting it, but have completely forgotten by the time you arrived home? The Local Government Association of South Australia has worked closely with local Councils throughout South Australia to develop the My Local Services App, a state-wide application which delivers local information, about local services to you. My Local Services App is a specialist smart phone application that allows you to find out information on vital services or even report a problem in the community right from your phone.

The smart phone app will provide you with the information you need whether you are at home, on holiday or staying with friends. Featuring local events, parks, information about local Elected Members and when you need to put your bin out, the app puts local information at your fingertips. The reporting function allows you to take a photo of an issue with your smart phone, pinpoint the exact location you are in and include additional information that you feel is important.

The app is available for both iPhones and Android devices and can be downloaded from the iTunes App Store for iPhones users or from the Google Play Store for Android owners or visit www.mitchamcouncil.sa.gov.au
