New Corn Palace design recalls the past
IF YOU HAVEN’T BEEN TO SEE THE WORLD’S ONLY CORN PALACE LATELY, YOU MIGHT DO A DOUBLE TAKE THIS YEAR. THE FAMILIAR ONION DOMES ARE BEING REPLACED WITH LEAFY, ORGANIC SCULPTURES THAT RECALL THE TRADITIONAL DOMES OF YEARS PAST. ALSO, A BALCONY HAS BEEN ADDED OVER THE MAIN STREET ENTRANCE, GIVING VISITORS A SWEEPING VIEW OF DOWNTOWN MITCHELL AND AN UP-CLOSE LOOK AT THE CORN PALACE ITSELF. AND STREET-LEVEL MOSAIC PATTERNS HAVE RETURNED.
The changes are all part of the complete

corn in carefully separated plots to ensure
What has not changed are the unique corn murals. They have grown in size, but continue to be hand-made each year from special varieties of locally grown corn and other prairie plants that make up the colorful mosaics that adorn the palace’s walls. Although the Corn Palace dates back to 1892, it transforms itself each fall — with real corn. Lots of corn — 275,000 colorful ears are carefully sliced and nailed into place on the murals that adorn the building. It’s all done by hand, a folk art form that is all but lost — except at the World’s Only Corn Palace. The current theme, installed last year, celebrates the 125th anniversary of South Dakota statehood in 1889. The mosaic murals depict farmers, miners, steamboats, bison and the state Capitol in Pierre.
plants don’t cross-pollinate and dilute the purity of the colors. At the same time, local artist Cherie Ramsdell begins composing new murals. To create the decorative frames around the images, artisans combine bundles of ryegrass and sour dock, a hearty prairie plant, and staple the bundles to the frames. In late August the mural images themselves are transferred from sketches to roofing paper, which is nailed into place on the walls of the palace. Then the crew goes to work: colored ears of corn are carefully sawn in half, trimmed, and nailed to the paper to create the variegated images for which the Corn Palace is famous. The 2015 facelift of the Corn Palace revives some of the early traditions, said Eric Amel, of MSR, the Minneapolis architecture firm in charge of the project.

Howe was hired by the Works Progress Administration to paint the mural in 1940. His first day of painting did not go well: The paint he chose did not stand up to the heat of summer. When he returned for his second day of work, he discovered that the previous day’s painting had been ruined. Howe, undaunted, chose a more durable paint and started over. His perseverance paid off — the circular mural is one of Oscar Howe’s most well-known public art projects. Today the Carnegie Resource Center is home to the Mitchell Area Historical Society and the Mitchell Area Genealogical Society. Mitchell named a Top 7 city for technology, strategy WHAT DOES MITCHELL HAVE IN COMMON WITH NEW TAIPEI, TAIWAN, NEW ARLINGTON, VA, AND RIO DI JANEIRO, BRAZIL? ALL WERE NAMED 2015 TOP 7 INTELLIGENT COMMUNITIES BY THE INTELLIGENT COMMUNITY FORUM. The Top 7 Communities were judged on Broadband Access, Knowledge Workforce, Innovation, Digital Inclusion and Advocacy. Nearly 400 communities competed for the annual award, according to the Intelligent Community Forum, a New York-based think tank that studies 21st century social and economic development around the globe. Mitchell is the smallest city to be recognized as a Top 7 Intelligent Community since the award program began in 2002. With three private broadband providers (plus a fourth option for business-to-business needs), Mitchell stands out from communities around the globe as having an uncommon degree of options and quality for broadband connectivity. To be among the Top 7, a community must also be developing a knowledge workforce, honing and nurturing an innovative

Get Charged Up! The Mitchell Tesla Charging Station right off Interstate 90 was the first electric “supercharger” station in South Dakota, which makes it especially electrifying. Tesla is a California-based electric car maker that plans to have charging stations in 98 percent of the United States, so that its electric cars can travel from coast to coast. That’s why six charging stations equipped for Tesla Model S cars are located on Havens Avenue, between the County Fair Food Store and Dairy Queen in Mitchell. The charging stations are specifically made for the Tesla Model S electric sedan, and the charge is free. In Mitchell and elsewhere, the stations are strategically stationed in places where people can shop and eat while their car charges. Twenty to thirty minutes of charge will get three hours of travel, just about enough to make it to the next charging station in Rapid City to the west or Sioux Falls to the east.

The Great Outdoors Are Just Outside Mitchell
Retailers cater to hunters, fishermen, hikers and campers
SOUTH DAKOTA’S LOVE OF HUNTING, FISHING AND THE OUTDOORS IS APPARENT IN MITCHELL. IN ADDITION TO GREAT OUTDOOR OPPORTUNITIES JUST OUTSIDE OF TOWN, THE CITY HAS A NUMBER OF BUSINESSES GEARED TOWARD HUNTING AND FISHING. The plains of eastern South Dakota are home to one of the richest ringneck pheasant populations in North America. Bird hunters from across the United States flock to the Mitchell area for pheasant hunting. Guided and youth hunts make Mitchell a great place for a yearly hunt. Our nation’s first president should be thanked for making South Dakota one of the top pheasant harvest states. George Washington is credited with being the first to bring pheasants to the United States. Although the ringneck pheasant was not successfully released into South Dakota until 1908, the current population is now around 10 million birds. “South Dakota is renowned worldwide for its pheasant hunting, and rightfully so,” says South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks. “Only twice in the past 20 years has the annual pheasant harvest been under 1 million
roosters, and those “down” years of 1992 and 1997 were both over 900,000”. Resident and nonresident small game licenses can be purchased online with a credit card or from a local licensed outlet. South Dakota

residents need an annual small game, one-day small game, youth small game, combination or junior combination license to hunt pheasants. Nonresident adults need a South Dakota nonresident small-game license.
