LIGHT | HEAVY BURNETT LANE, BRISBANE

2013

FIRST YEAR

GROUP PROJECT

Given the theme of light and heavy then the constraints of the material qualities of paper, Light | Heavy makes use of paper as a structural material to create a lantern as a decorative fixture within the Burnett Laneway Precinct in the Brisbane CBD. The group project was headed by myself in a group of three. The lantern uses the dense, crisp and sculptural qualities of paper to give a more solid and heavy appearance whilst the geometric pattern and lighting contradict this with a sense of lightness.

SECOND SKIN UNIVERSITY OF MELBOURNE, MELBOURNE

2013

FIRST YEAR

GROUP PROJECT

In an exploration of personal space and social interactions, Second Skin explores the tectonics and materiality behind the system of panel and fold. The group project was headed by myself in a group of three. Thousands of folded paper pieces join together to create a permeable fabric like membrane, that is both organic and synthetic in appearance. In times of fear and uncertain response, the membrane expands from underneath to shield the user away from those around them.

A PLACE FOR KEEPING SECRETS HERRING ISL AND, MELBOURNE

2014

SECOND YEAR

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT

Situated on Herring Island - an island that was borne of trash - ‘A Place for Keeping Secrets’ proposes a relationship between architecture and the earth. Additionally, the consideration of existential issues and chronology are part of the brief. Consequently, rather than thinking what can be added, the subtraction of mass is paramount in the expression of time within the project. Materials that convey layers of geology and the removal of the landscape in turn become a playful reminder of what was once there, or more appropriately, what it used to be. C

BOATHAUS STUDLEY PARK, MELBOURNE

2014

SECOND YEAR

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT

The Boathaus sits along the Yarra River as a replacement to the existing boathouse on site. The project proposes a large cantilevered glass box that faces true north, almost cutting into the site of the park in half. The lower half of the structure - clad completely in bluestone as a solid foundation to the glass box above sits neatly into the earth to hide its visual mass and presence. The circulation within the building encourages visitors to take a moment to see each view offered at every turn based on the floor plates which merge into and out of each other.

GENETIC BRIDGE MERRI CREEK, MELBOURNE

2015

THIRD YEAR

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT

Sited on Merri Creek, the bridge seeks to reconnect three layers of the area - the hill, the park and the river into a seamless network. The bridge in itself is a stark visual expression of metaheuristics and structure. Although appearing erratic and somewhat arbitrary at times, each beam, truss and column is positioned in such a way using a genetic algorithm to use the least amount of steel such that no two structural members are the same length nor position.

INFLECTION | REFLECTION 391 SPENCER STREET, MELBOURNE

2015

THIRD YEAR

INDIVIDUAL PROJECT

Set in 2045 wherein consolidation of sites is rife and big is built for the sake of big, Inflection | Reflection proposes a smaller typology of architecture that takes advantage of small grain spaces and the human scale - dualities that are an expression of Melbourne. Typically in this fashion, what we first see does not reveal everything and more lies beneath. The moire pattern facade seeks to do the same to conceal the facade in a blur from a distance, with the compact and dynamic program only becoming more apparent upon closer inspection.
