Administrative Law Externship
Mitchell’s 41 government law classes focus on substantive policy issues as well as the skills needed to administer government programs, conduct administrative hearings, write contracts that protect the public’s best interest, and provide advice and opinions involving statutory interpretation.
Students earn credit and gain real-world experience while working closely with administrative law judges? They support judges at three state agency contested (trial-type) hearings and a rulemaking hearing, and prepare the first draft of one contested case and one rule decision.
In addition, advanced courses, clinics, the Indian Law Program, and externships allow students to specialize in specific areas of government law, including state and local tax, land use, national security, civil rights, Indian law, and community development.
Government Agency Externship Thanks to Mitchell’s stellar reputation and strong relationships with government leaders, there are many government agency externships available each year. Recent externship placements include Minnesota Management and Budget, the Department of Human Services, Hennepin County Administration, the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry, the Minnesota Department of Transportation, and Minnesota Public Safety.
Court of Appeals and District Court Externships Working closely with judges on the Minnesota Court of Appeals, the Federal District Court in Minnesota, and the Minnesota District Courts, students perform a variety of court and clerking activities and attend appellate arguments.
