Mitchell’s intellectual property curriculum ranks among the top five in the nation for breadth and rigor, according to the latest Report on Intellectual Property Curricula. Courses are organized into four key areas: copyrights, patents, trademarks, and corporate law. Each area offers foundational courses, which provide an overview of intellectual property law, and advanced courses, which provide detailed knowledge of the law and policy of patents, trademarks, and copyrights.
The Intellectual Property Institute at William Mitchell College of Law is where students have the opportunity to take their legal education to the next level. Students work with professors, state legislators, and business professionals to craft legislation to facilitate innovation and protect inventors, promote a better understanding of the power of innovation, and educate judges and lawyers on intellectual property law issues and precedent.
Mitchell Intellectual Property Law Clinic Students gain direct experience working with clients and practicing attorneys in the areas of copyright, patent, and trademark law. Students will apply their substantive learning of the law to related IP projects, where they will have an opportunity to hone their basic skills and theoretical understanding in various IP areas. Mitchell is one of only a few law school’s in the country where intellectual property students are allowed to file and prosecute patent and trademark applications before the USPTO.

It is one of the first intellectual property law reviews in the world that invites readers to post comments at the end of each article, creating a place where readers can respond to articles and authors can respond to comments from readers.
