International Law at William Mitchell Courses
Study Abroad
Mitchell’s international law curriculum is designed to empower students with the knowledge and skills to practice the law internationally. It builds a foundation by providing a clear understanding of how U.S. law compares to that in other countries and allows students to build expertise and skills in specialty areas including international negotiations and dispute resolution, Islamic law, international copyright and trademark law, and European Union law.
Mitchell in London: study comparative law with international scholars and top practitioners. This innovative summer program offers in-depth courses exploring immigration and human rights, international patent law, global issues in contract law, and cross-cultural negotiation and dispute resolution. Ireland: study law at the Irish Centre for Human Rights. The Netherlands: study human rights law at the Hague International Process Clinic. Chile: study the role that expanding free trade has played in Latin America. Malta: study refugee and asylum law, mediating international and cross-cultural conflict. Czech Republic: study comparative criminal law, and cross-cultural negotiation. Turkey: study international law in Istanbul.
Immigration Law Clinic Students gain real-world experience representing indigent clients in administrative proceedings before the Immigration and Naturalization Service and Federal Court. Cases concern the immigration status of aliens. Students interview and counsel clients, research laws and regulations, write briefs, prepare for hearings, and act as trial counsel at evidentiary hearings.

Mitchell students are doing work that will have an impact five thousand miles away. They’re part of Professor Chris Ver Ploeg’s seminar, “Advising the International and Humanitarian NGO,” in which they gain experience serving as legal advisers to a major international non-profit organization. The organization, Mano a Mano, helps the people of Bolivia by building clinics, providing surplus medical supplies, and improving infrastructure. The weekly class is a combination seminar/independent study/clinic experience.
