We are having problems diagnosing an electrical fault on a 2010 Volkswagen Polo 1,2. The vehicle cranks but won’t start and the alternator warning lamp is illuminated. Our scanner has read several faults codes that relate to low battery voltage. We have charged the main vehicle battery and the vehicle will still not start. Can you help?

The symptoms you describe are common on all Polo (6R1) models and the cause is a poor connection between the engine earth lead and chassis earth point due to corrosion. Check for corrosion between the engine earth lead and chassis earth point. Replace component(s) as necessary. Fit a new earth lead stud on the engine mounting and tighten the stud to the correct torque setting. Check the vehicle starts and erase all fault codes.

MAKE YOUR DIAGNOSTICS A WORK OF ‘ART’ …WITH AN ALTERNATOR RIPPLE TEST If a vehicle comes into the workshop and you suspect, having spoken to the owner, that an electrical issue could be at the root, the Alternator Ripple Test (ART) is a great starting point for your diagnostic process.
A list of options then opens up so click Top Level Menus, followed by How To, and then scroll down and select Test Tips to pull up a page of tests you can run – the ART is the first one on the list.
Snap-on’s handheld diagnostic tools make running an ART a simple course of action thanks to the Top Level Menu (TLM) system, which is one of the most powerful features contained in the Guided Component Tests on each tool with a component test meter in the range – Vantage, Modis Ultra, Verdict and Verus Pro.
Once the test has loaded, the page is broken down into different sections, each of which contains important information. The second of those sections shows you how to connect the unit to the vehicle in order to run the test.
